This video is the textbook case as to why anyone should never drive at the limit in TF, you never know what is happening ahead. In this case, as you said, going faster would've ended a lot worse for you. Always have a safety margin so that you can react as best you can in this kind of moment.

I think one of the main points to take from these type of incidents is not to panic. Any hard inputs could backfire, so to roll with what you have and keep the car as straight as you did, was by far and away the best opportunity to avoid disaster. Well driven Robert, some quick judgement there whether you were concious of it or not 👍🏻

Yep I held my breath when I saw this beaut going off the track. The Bruenchen is very unforgiving off the line... Great content as usual. To all the keyboard Ninja's, it is the professional decency to stop right where the car is in mechanical trouble and warn the others, coolant on a track is like black ice... so driving of here is like "hit and run". Even i m a beginner I can explain a mistake I did on nos the same way. I had a couple of car safety trainings that helped me to make this decisions.
    Shot version:
    1. I'm probably to fast for this corner / steering in to the apax and softly braking
    2. I'm definitely too fast / car understeers a lot
    3. open up the steering wheel and going for middle of the corner / still understeer
    4. hit the breaks hard because I'm losing control / thinking: don't steer in more, it doesn't bring back the grip (missed to open up the steering)
    5. Try to go for the outline of the corner / ABS and ESP are working hard ( lucky that I'm let them on )
    6. finally the speed become such slow that the frontend gets grip while ABS are working.
If I can explain desicions I made in many 1 or 2 sec. You, Robert, can do it even more. And you made better desicions then I did.
P.S. this happens on my 3 lap ever at slowest corner on Adenauer Forst.
P.S. this car safety trainings I did were very helpful !!!
P.S. I was not thinking of unsettle the car. May be this is the difference to an experienced driver like Robert

    • @Tristan.R.J.M
      @Tristan.R.J.M 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@tobiasz9090 maybe because a brakingpoint is comprised of many more variables and therefore subjective. Variables wich when done right allow for a certain line. A line wich will bring you comfortably from entry to exit. A line you will miss if your braking is too late.
I’ve done more laps with this instruction than without. No regrets, so much fun. Seems like you enjoy it too!

    • @tobiasz9090
      @tobiasz9090 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Tristan.R.J.M you're right if you go for lap times. I was thinking about beginners, don't care about 50cm but 2m. If you get a powerful car you got better breaks and tiers. So the braking point should be similar.
Misha told me breaking points as an instructor, hopefully I can remember a lot of them.

Excellent video analysis Robert, one of the best on track video explanations I've seen. It was interesting to know your thought process from the entry into Brünnchen, to seeing the dust and knowing that you have to scrub the speed off, whilst checking up track for the other car. Then having spotted the coolant and leaving you with a tough choice of do I stick the car into the barrier or try and push though. You did well to hold it and drive away with so little damage. I had to watch the onboard video a couple of times before I noticed the coolant on the track.

Well done Robert this just shows that instinct as a driver pays dividends, this skill separates those who can drive fast in a straight line to those who can save a car in a split second under challenging always changing conditions, for me as a driver you have this skill or you simply do not, this is what separates a proper driver, especially the do I bin it or try to save it and always thinking of others before yourself, if I might hit them I will bin it, if not then try the save, I have had instances like this on our local track and to be honest it separates the ones who have it to the ones who do not it is night and day! Love the analysis of this always honest and open. Good Job :-)

This is why I like riding my XT 250 in the dirt. It’s great cross training and makes my street riding better in so many ways.
Sliding around turns using the throttle or making quick reactions through the bumps to keep it smooth, you can get more excitement in a couple of hours of dirt than a years worth of responsible street riding. Even track days don’t let you ride with the same “looseness” that is normal in the dirt.
Those skills can serve you well in situations where you have to rely on instinct and are purely reacting. It’s great cross training.

Fantastic save! I've had this happen on local tracks in the PNW with spilled coolant. Was lucky to not bin my car, but I had a lot more run off. Learned a lot from your analysis. Thank you for sharing.

Robert, great driver instincts and skills! When I watched the Instagram footage, I certainly did not see the coolant spill so didn’t really understand what had happened. But your analysis and insights have filled in the missing pieces. Thanks and well done, you and the GT2 are safe and around to see another day. Bravo

Really enjoying the channel, nice to see the behind the scenes, all to easy for many to judge without knowing the full story.
Hoping to come back on 2 wheels when lock down lifts but it would have been game over on a motorcycle with coolant on the ground.
    Keep up the good work

Had a similar encounter with coolant on my r1 going around a bend at 140 same thing saved my I something in the road and a truck with a popped hood. Started slowing down and hit the coolant around 110 front went through fine but almost lost the rear end. Smooth inputs and luck saved my life

The subtle corrections on the wheel, presumably developed from time spent driving in the wet, feels like should get the credit for the save here, IMO. In panic situations it's so hard to not overcorrect, and the only way to develop that instinct is with practice. Well done, glad you didn't go into the wall. (I wrote off a car on track from a similar coolant dump - 997 owners get your lines pinned!! - and was not able to control the slip..)

Great analysis of a scary situation... No one no matter how good they are can control a car that's sliding on oil/coolant... There's a few micro seconds where you have to think / react and execute ( training) and then luck comes into play. It seems like everything you did or didn't do led to you not hitting the barrier and once you stopped bouncing all over the grass/gravel you checked the rear view mirrors and drove back onto the track... This was a combo of doing the right thing and not doing the wrong thing in equal amounts... Glad your OK that's what matters most and glad car was not significantly damaged. Such a horrible feeling being in a car that's sliding and you know there's nothing you can do. Interesting facial expressions also. 😉🤔😁

Having been through oil and coolant while racing autocross I know that "Oh Sh-t" feeling you get while at speed knowing you are going ice skating with a car. Luckily only my pride was hurt as I swapped ends in a 360 rotation then back on the road to finish. I had a giant shoulder area luckily and the blown engine car parked on the opposite side of the road from my spin out. Hitting coolant or oil is one way to get a shower and new underwear. Wishing you continued good luck and many blessings.

It is insane the amount of clueless professionals out there. From the first moment I saw the original video I knew 100% there was a spill. That was masterfully handled Robert, and I wish I had half of your skill! Well done! Keep it between ditches:)

Tried something in the same realm at Flugplatz at the scuderia a couple of years back. I hit something slippery midcorner and the car just went straight, I was albe to get it turned slightly, so that i hit the barriers at a very shallow angle, bumped the tyrebarrier a few times. The car got totalled but me and my passanger was unharmed,
I have done trackdays for 15 years, and I have no doubt that experience helped me out on that day.
The moral is clear in my book: Practice as much as possible, someday it might help you when things get sticky

A lot of people don’t realize how much damage those tire barriers do. The brackets to hold them in place Just dig into the side of the body panels and rip gaping holes in them

awesome video. Happy everything turned out alright.
Speaking about insurance. I am not sure how it works in Germany but in my country, they deduct 10% on the repair bill for every year when the car is used. Up to 50%. So I had another driver who hit me and admits his fault, police report and everything. But my car was 8 years old. And the bill was 2400$ (nothing major, just the number and a grill). So insurance took that 2400 minus 50% and paid me 1200$. Looking forward to updates to see how it will go with you Robert.
    Good luck!

Greetings from Colorado, Robert! Thank you for the thoughtful, frank and open analysis. Yours is a somewhat rare and highly effective personal style that I describe in two ways. First and foremost, you demonstrate the value of living life consciously with and on purpose. Second, you live your life at one speed which I would describe, simply, as effective. There can be several components of both elements. But the primary value of conscious purpose is to shield yourself from what I call The Eighth Deadly Sin- that being deceiving or even lying to one's self. By definition, victims of the 8th Deadly Sin are not aware of doing so and, as a result, often deceive or even lie to themselves. I'll leave that there though I could speak at length to the idea. People who are blessed to live at one speed are rarely victims of the emotions of fear, anger or resentment. The immutable consequence of even minimal anger and resentment is a kind of low-grade insanity which manifests itself in unpredictable and inconsistent judgment. Your analysis here, as well as your first quick driving reactions that saved your car, and your immediate subsequent decisions to gather information and openly alert authorities, protecting others as well as following a series of Apex standard protocols. This video was a privilege and a joy to watch. Well done, as always.

Definitely a great recovery... regardless of opinion it’s typically hard to drive well under these “puckered” moments! Well done Sir, it also shows the armchair “QBs” that anyone can experience a situation like this and the talent lies in the recovery.

When you sit back after a lot of external factors went in your favour for sure.. couple of corners either way no video footage, no left side run off and limited sighting over crest etc, but the key as you say is remaining calm and trusting instinct, Great save for sure with minimal damage! Interesting on the insurance front does that apply say to a UK car that is explicitly not covering the car on track or would you as 3rd party still have recourse?
