- Today we return to the Harry Potter franchise... something many of you have been rudely clamoring for us to do. In the 5th Potter film, we see continued Hogwarts ineptitude, some teenage hormones, a bad teacher, and magic somehow gets even more confusing.
Thursday: Sins of a superhero movie that sucks ass.

Did anyone else notice the sin that, Harry got expelled from Hogwarts for casting the patronus charm (to save someone's life might I add) in front of a muggle, yet the Ministry of Magic has no problem sending letters that float and talk to a house of THREE muggles??

And didn't Harry perform magic in Prisoner of Azkaban (inflated Vernon's sis to look like a beach balloon), IN FRONT of those SAME muggles?

I just have to say real quick: Evanna Lynch, the girl who plays Luna Lovegood, is such perfect casting that I refuse to believe she was a real person prior to this movie. She just plays the character perfectly.
The same goes to Helena Bonham Carter and Bellatrix. Again, spot-on.

Fun fact in an interview J.K. Rowling stated that Evanna Lynch portrayed Luna Lovegood so well that she rewrote some scenes of Deathly Hallows to give her a more prominent role! How's that for a compliment?

we run into a strange phenomenon here with harry potter. it is so big and so widespread that anything I google trying to find the date harry potter OotP started or ended filming or principle photography google just keeps redirecting me to imdb wikipedia which strangely enough doesn't tell me the production dates.
I don't know if it was her audition video or when she visited set but I read in some interview with a big film magazine that J.K. Rowling plugged Luna Lovegood specifically and says something about how she portrays the character so well that she wrote her more prominently for the final book. This was an interview 8 or 9 years ago and I can't find it which pissed me off.

Whenever that time was they met many months later Rowling said in an interview that she gave Luna Lovegood a larger role in the final book specifically mentioning how good Evanna Lynch portrayed Luna Lovegood. I can't find it anywhere and frankly this pissed me off I actually think I even have the Damn interview somewhere in my clutter of books and magazines or attic or basement. it was an interview with JK Rowling from either a film or literature magazine my dad had got it for me because he knew I was a huge Harry Potter fan and was interested in getting into film and writing himself. I read the interview thought it was cool that she said that put the magazine somewhere and haven't seen it since.
I also have a random 80 or so paperback book somewhere where she is being interviewed for some biography book and mentions that she wrote many of the ideas for the first 3 books on a bunch of napkins initially. yet I can't find any info of that on her wikipedia either.
so thank you for asking me to more specific I feel like I need to find that book and magazine and add that stuff to the wiki myself!
See I actually am a writer myself and have never finished anything I just have dozens of unfinished stories littering my house and harddrive on random pieces of papers and napkins and stuff like that and I have been doing that for at least 15 years >< So I have writing random stuff on pieces of paper everywhere in common with Rowling ><
Another unrelated fun fact that you can actually find proof for in the introduction of the book hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy Douglas Addams wrote almost all of that book after getting a contract to write the book from a publisher and getting it delayed over and over and over again not even giving his editor a chapter to read getting a letter from his publisher basically saying "give us the first chapter of your book or we don't want it anymore and went out in a field got drunk and wrote the entire book in two weeks >< something I do all the time when I have an essay or report to write and have weeks or months to finish it waiting until the last day to write it and getting an A* My writing style and inspiration is a combo between JK Rowling Douglas Addams and George Orwell.
I guess what I am saying is I need to actually finish writing a Damn book and stop playing so many videogames watching anime movies tv shows and reading books other people create and procrastinating for another 15 years ><

Yeah like in the fifth book, they casted a spell on Harry that would make him look pretty invisible and they didn't fly too low to the ground, but in the movie they totally left that out for the cooler shot, which was pretty cool to watch but would make no sense.

Edit: Because every comment I ever get on this is about Neville actually being able to see the thestrals cuz he saw his grandpa die, I would like to clear something up. I know. This comment is from the movies perspective, where we don’t get that storyline. Not trying to be mean or toxic, I just want to clear that up.

I'm intensely annoyed at how much the plot is decimated in the Harry Potter films, and how little is explained. But the greatest sin was how much they destroyed the scene in Dumbledore's office after Sirius's death. That was easily one of the most powerful scenes in the book - Harry smashing up his office, trying to come to terms with his grief and guilt and the prophecy, Dumbledore letting him do it, and that crucial in-depth conversation about the prophecy and its meaning. I'm always annoyed that they reduced it to a few lines that explained absolutely nothing.
That's what comes from making the movies while the story was in progress. What's important? What's not? Rowling was so secretive about the ending that she didn't let anyone know who needed to know.

+ She actually told Allan Rickman how Snape would end and why early on, so he could portray the character better.
they did the same with the Goblet of Fire, as far as I remember there was a scene in D's office in the book and in the movie it was completely cut off. anyway, that Dumbledore actor is not good enough for such a scene, that guy from first two movies was excellent, his replacement is just shouting and behaving like total ass, he cannot act like a serious headmaster. so disappointing

Also, because Harry used magic in the presence of a Muggle, the Ministry sent a Howler to inform him he's been expelled from Hogwarts in the presence of three Muggles.

But the Dursley family includes Dudley, who is the Muggle that was around when Harry cast the Patronus charm. So then why should the Ministry care about him using magic in his presence? They let him off scot-free after he inflated Aunt Marge.

Well, that is one of the reasons I hate the movies. The books are so good but in the movie both me and my mother were simply shouting that how they not only cut important stuff but actually change minor plot points as well.
You can still resist veritaserum, taking the antidote for it or using occlumency can resist the effects so it's not 100%, think of it like a lie detector irl.
wizards do need trials, but you do have a point. and we do have to notice that this is a book mistake too, not only in the movie.
plot hole goes like this: dumbledore showed up at harry's trial to defend him and a book earlier he had snape give the potion immediately to crouch jr. so, yes, it does take a month to brew and it is extremely difficult to make, so the ministry might not even have a wizard capable of making it, but harry's trial was scheduled quite some time ago and in this case dumbledore is actually involved so he could use snape's potion in the exact same way to prove harry's honesty and not be based upon a squib, whose perspective would be questioned due to the ministry's utter ignorance. i'm not sure whether the trial had a full month's notice, but still, dumbledore... why doesn't he?

He was still under the Trace, and he can't use magic out of Hogwarts until he's seventeen. He was fifteen in this movie, which included having the Ministry looking over his magic usage. Ministry folk don't give a damn about muggles.

It's been said multiple times in the comments, but yeah, the books explain almost all of the sins. The problem is that the movies don't. Not exactly the best approach for people who didn't start with the books and only know the movies. Harry Potter would have worked better as a BBC series and not condensed into 2 hours per book. Obviously not enough time to fit 500+ pages of story.

yeah, I've read the books, but i always found myself watching the movies and thinking, god, this would be hard to understand if i hadn't read them. Btw i'm a huge Harry Potter fan and have read the book several times, but these videos make me laugh

I think its neat how Neville found the prophecy. It sorta hints at how he could've also been the chosen one
Skarlet the Husky He should’ve been the Chosen One. It would have been a great ending if it was revealed that Harry wasn’t special after all, or not as special anyway. At the end, everybody’s crowding around Neville cheering and Harry watches with mixed feelings. Wouldn’t that be good?

the prophecy says that the chosen one is the one born when the 7 th month dies, July has 31 days and Neville is born on the 30 th while harry on the 31 st, so mathematically this question can never be asked again.
Amina Kribi but it’s cannon? In the books, Dumbledore literally tells Harry that Neville could’ve also ended up being the chosen one if Voldemort had gone for him instead of Harry. It’s not a question, it’s a fact. Next time do a fact check before posting an argument
This whole series could have been at least 2 books shorter if the adults just told harry what was happening
and then, Voldemort would know too. remember? they're connected. so, Dumbledore needed to play a long-game/long-con, in order to get one over on the dark lord.

Dumbledore even admits if he had explained far more when he was supposed to, answering about the Prophecy back when Harry first asked why Voldemort wanted to kill him as a kid, several Deaths would have been prevented just for a start. And this could have happened long before Voldemort realized he was linked to Harry or could send him thoughts. Plus I don't think Voldemort could ever receive information from Harry, since he was apparently curious why it took a year of mutual pondering over the Department of Mysteries for Voldemort to figure out how to send Harry there. He would have known Harry didn't know about the Prophecy if he could probe his mind from a distance.
Mind, that might not have been explained in the movie...

@@DonEBrooke32 Considering Voldemort physically attacked Harry during his first year at school, and his Death Eaters/Horcruxes caused problems within it for the next several (even if for their own reasons), they were hardly at peace. Harry's earlier years were literally described as being a calm between two wars by Firenze, and one of the few things Dumbledore Did tell Harry during his first year was that Voldemort was not dead, though he could still be fought, with the chance of delaying his rise to power. Even Harry himself knew Voldemort was still going to try to come back.
The ultimate proof of the fact that the adults should have kept Harry more in the loop: Had Harry known the truth of the Prophecy, which at the very least could have been told to him after Voldemort's return and Cedric's death, Harry would have known what those dreams had meant, and have been ready for the attempts to lure him into the Department of Mysteries, and Sirius would not have had to go after him, and thus might not have died at all. Dumbledore admits not properly arming Harry with knowledge meant Dumbledore was to share some of the blame for Sirius' death.
Let's not drag the MCU's politics into it. That's its own issue.

Another sin that I’ve always been confused about: So Harry wakes up in the middle of the night after having horrible nightmares where he thinks he’s going to die, but instead of the adults in the situation comforting him and letting him get his head on straight, they immediately try to get a semi-awake, sweaty, scared Harry to “defend his mind” (which he literally doesn’t know how to do) instead. At like 3am. What?! Like I get that he needs to learn, but maybe not right then, when he is literally covered in sweaty pajamas and almost died.
in the books this whole thing is different and logic,that film is just a bad adaptation

@@fatherdog346 generally speaking, The original source usually are better because they explained and expanded everything better than adaptations. Adaptations like movie are constrained with time, budget, etc to fully incorporate important things from the original source. But adaptations will ofc gives you different experiences to enjoy. In this case imo the books are ofc better than the movie, for reasons above. Tho of course People have their own taste on what they like. The wrong things they did aside, I like the hp movie for they make the world building easier to imagine in my head. Tho i'd definitely suggest to read the books if you're a fan, because like i said, books will give you better insight on everything happening in the world of hp (i'm still salty the didn't include the quidditch world cup, book 4 got the best summer imo)

@@lunaromanoff7920 in the books wizard clothing is very different than muggle clothing. Wizards usually wear robes and pointed hats and a bunch of other things. Many of the items are magical.
Same house for Patil twins. One for Ravenclaw and other for Gryffindor. They BOTH wear Gryffindor Uniform instead....

@that one animator A muggle is someone who has no magic gene because neither of their parents have it, a squib is when both or one of their parents have the magic gene and either didn’t pass it down or it lays dormant in them, a muggle born is when the gene resurfaces in the child after generations of laying dormant.

As much as I'm a big Harry Potter fan the thestrals have always pissed me off - are we supposed to believe that in the bustle of a load of children trying to fight their way onto a carriage in the previous three years they've all conveniently never bumped into one and thought 'What the hell was that?'?

5:00 the real conflict of the story is the fact that Harry is slowly getting possessed by Voldemort. You can see him being cold to his friends and lost his temper when both Dudley and Draco started to taunt him. Him seeing Cedric get killed was what made him so insecure. It turned even worse when Sirius died. That's when Voldemort fully infiltrated his mind. And he finally realized that his friends are always by his side. This movie was about the character growth of Harry and a little bit about Neville.

Technically even if you accept that he didn't see the Thestrals since book 1, he still shouldn't have seen them in the 5th book. And I agree he should've seen them since book one, because he was awake, when Lily died.
And when he already saw Cedric die, he didn't see the thestrals when he was boarding the Hogwarts express back to the Muggle world, but saw them the year after.
Well, I guess it's because you have to witness death itself, as in something deep enough for you to care. Harry barely remembers what happened, since he was a baby. The films are the ones who depict Harry watching his mother die anyway.

I believe it was to illustrate the severity of the crime kind of like how our governments add aggravating factors when accusing people of a crime. Like holding up a convenience store in broad day light, it shows the audacity and recklessness without necessarily being a separate crime.
Also, muggles like the Dursley's seem to be special cases since Petunia's known about magic since Lily was 11 and Vernon has known since before her married Petunia. The ministry hasn't wiped their memories or even gone after the Weasley's or Hagrid for using magic in front of and even on the Dursleys.

No, Petunia learned about magic because her sister (Lily) was a witch. She told Vernon before they got married. It isn't clear whether or not Dudley was told about magic before Harry went to Hogwarts but it isn't likely.

Tessa Gray Infants are not familiar with the concept of death and therefor little Harry did not realize that his mum was gone,but he knows what's about to happen when Cedric gets hit by the Death Curse. He also didn't really know his parents or what they were like.
My granny died when I was as old as baby Harry and it took years before I fully realized what that means (and yes,she was holding me when it happened,so I must have seen it. A Heart attack). I guess you have to witness death and feel the emotional impact of it to be able to see the Thestrals.

Another sin is that Peeves is not in this movie. If ANY of the Potter films needed Peeves, it was this one. Umbridge is the most loathsome character in the entire series, and basically all Peeves ever did throughout the book was torment her. Without him, she did not receive anywhere near enough punishment for her gross misdeeds in this movie.

CinemaSins is frequently mystified why, with such amazing magic, there are problems in the wizarding world. Doesn't seem that mystifying to me. After all, the muggle world has amazing technologies, and yet we continue to have problems.
Our technology isn't remotely as good as magic, though, I mean, otherwise there'd be nothing wondrous in magic for us to care about.
Well, if they just created useful spells and stuff there wouldn't be much problems. O
But for everything magic makes better, there are things it adds that are worse than what we have, such as boggarts, demons, demementors, that strangling plant in harry potter 1, etc.

You guys should really do the Half-Blood Prince soon. I can already imagine several sins you could point out. Like,
"Can you really stop the pictures from moving in the Daily Profit? It's never really explained in any of the films how they get them to move in the first place," or something like that.
Possibly the "Wand block" joke again , or some variation when Dumbeldore apparates Harry away.
Then there's that apparating. you could bring up if people in the magic world really need portkeys, or the floo network when they can just teleport on their own.
The list goes on & on.

That whole movie is a sin. It is nothing AT ALL like the book, which was an amazing book.

The Books Don't Matter.
And not in the movies. Any movie where you have to read the book to understand the majority of the plot is just one big sin. Also, a lot of sins are things simply poor film making and the constant shifting of directors messing up continuity.
