The writing and directing in this shows is closer to real live series/movies than to animes. In this fight we receive: - World building: Lugner explaining how demon function in relation to magic. Lenie explaining in 1 sentence that all creatures have mana, including fighters, who uses it for different skills compared to mages. Remember how Eisen ran over the water in episode 4? This was a subtle hint that fighters also possess some kind of magic/mana and they use it for skills of their own. Also the scene Lenie is letting the giant axe hit the ground, showing us she uses gravity to hit since she does not have the power of Eisen while copying his techniques. - Char. building: Stark fighting not only physically but mentally his master. And the mentality part is the real "enemy" he has to conquer. Getting physically stronger is just byproduct of the real growth - the psychological internal one. The consequence of Fern's race against time in order to learn magic faster to repay Heiter before he dies - she cast spells faster. And all this information subtly interwoven within a fighting sequence of epic visuals, music, choreograph. No screaming! No 500 pages of internal dialog! Just subtle story telling. I've watched almost 350 animes, most of the top 100 in MAL, and countless live shows with Breaking Bad being the peak of story telling and char. developing for me. And I compare Frieren to it. This show is just build differently.
Did you know the voice actress playing Linie is also the voice of Akane in Oshi no Ko and Chuntaro in Demon Slayer? Chuntaro is Zen'itsu's kasagai sparrow 🤣 I love that fact. Linie's axe had weight of it's own. Her hits were powerful but, in comparison with Eisen's hits, they were nothing. Stark had padding around his waist where he took the hit but it still got through. He was wounded, but he's used to taking hits with more weight behind them so he basically tanked it. He was prepared to lose his life if it meant he could take Linie with him but it didn't come to that. I find that a little worrying. When we first met Stark and he fought the dragon he said, "If I die, will you promise to finish the dragon off for me?" or words to that effect. He's a little too keen to sacrifice himself for my peace of mind, you know what I mean?
Most of her previous attacks are downward which is pretty advantageous for a weapon like the one Linie was using but that last attack was an upward swing which significantly reduces the damage it dealt due to its weight which is why Stark said there's not much weight in it.
the spell casting speed that fern showed here against lugner isn't her fastest since one of her arms are injured. that's why if you go frame by frame of their fight, you'll notice fern was only using her uninjured arm to wave her staff around. Lugner lost to a nerfed fern, that's how much of a beast she is now.
Just like RPG games fighters are build differently. So Stark not only is tougher than other, lets say classes, but also Liene does not have the same strenght behind the hit. Also each creature have mana in this world, fighters have also, and they use it for different skills than the mages. One of it is like having stone skin, so to speak.
Lugner, a strong demon lost to a 1 armed Fern. She's a beast! The thing with Stark is very simple. Yes the Axe is heavy but that doesnt matter if you don't have the strength. Her pride got in her way to try and defeat Stark with his masters technique rather than something better off like a sword
It's funny how Lügner praised Qual and his Zoltraak the last episode and in this episode he got wrecked by the human Qual and the new version of Zoltraak.
She is copying the battlestyle of a 300lb dwarf with more muscle and strength than humans, she is a 50lb girl. A demon girl but still. If you could perfectly recreate all of Mike Tyson's moves from his prime, it wouldn't change the fact you don't have his power. Ontop of that he baited her to swing up, it's an axe, it bites but doesn't cleave through a target in most cases. She might of killed him if she had stuck to copying that Knight's method with a sword. Using Eisen's moves without his strength, with a huge greataxe that requires strength is what got her killed.
Eisen’s body was afraid of Stark, but Eisen was still way stronger. Eisen was afraid of plenty of enemies that he and the party ended up destroying. Stark is absurdly skilled and strong for his age, and I believe he has the potential to surpass Eisen in time, but Eisen - like everyone in the Party of Heroes - is a true monster.
Wounds are more treated as in videogames rather than reality in this show, mana is used to heal, bleeding is not a thing or is rarely a problem, warriors are used to getting hit and surviving, pain is rarely expressed if at all.
I mean kinda, but not really. Stark and Fern are just freaks. Stark as absurd physical durability and Fern was trained to keep her composure at all times. Fern doesn’t use her left arm for the entirety of the fight, because Lugner crippled her left shoulder in his ambush. Graf Granat was incapacitated and mortally wounded by a single blow to his liver. Yes, healing magic exists, but wounds are absolutely treated as serious within the text. The story is just mostly about freaks of nature who can compensate for the wounds they take.
There is weight in Linie’s hits. Stark’s abs are just so tough from Eisen’s training that Linie’s weaker imitation just couldn’t cut through.

Moreover, in her last attack, Linie swings upwards, so the axe actually weakens her attack because it is so heavy.
Also, I think Stark's waist wrapping is with layers of tough cloth. Layers of hardened cloth is an old technique of armor.
6:11 Aura likely took their heads off for that reason.

Glad you guys are watching ep 10 immediately after this. Looking forward to the next one.

eisen did not say that stark was stronger than him he only said he was afraid of him

Great explanation. Just to add to this she was so arrogant, petty, and cruel that she wanted to use his masters (and his own) technique
Basically the demon was all mana with little strenght and warriors are a little tanky. More will be explore in future seasons about this.

❤❤❤😊😊😊love it

@quegs Yeah, I was referring more in general, glancing over both Stark and Fern's talents and training.
