The montage of the 1000 years between Flamme's time and Himmel's is about 50 seconds, and the quick sequence of frames of her journey with Himmel is 0.5 seconds. The 1/100 ratio which refers to Frieren always saying the journey not being 1/100 of her life. The director visually shows us how Frieren perceives time
@@ThomiAnwarnah, that's exactly how it works. We're being shown how short it felt RELATIVE to her lifespan. If her lifespan is represented as 50 seconds, those 10 years would be represented in 0.5 when scaled accordingly, it's as simple as that. Sure it felt like 3 months to her, but like... It's a show. I'm embarrassed I have to tell you this, but episodes can't exactly be 3 months long. There's no way to "accurately" show exactly how it felt to her, all we can get is a relative comparison and that's what we got. If her whole lifespan can be shown in 50 seconds, the adventure is the last 0.5s of it.
In episode 2 there was a cute montage of Frieren drawing a circle around Fern while teaching her. Now we know why - to teach Fern how much to suppress her mana. Lugner was seeing the exact diameter of mana flow in the beginning of the episode.
People repeat that one but it's kind of a stretch. It's not like the user understand mana suppression by looking at it from the inside. It could be, but it's not stated anywhere.
Remember earlier when and Fern and Frieren fought the monster that used illusion. Frieren says that she's used to seeing her master beg for her life. Seemed strange then but makes sense now.
@imransamsuddin7258 For sure, thats what she was doing when she put Frieren down too, pretending she was giving in to them. Love how this show drops in small dialogue that might not make sense at the moment but always pays off later.
As powerful as Frieren is, Aura could of beaten her potentially if Frieren hadn't hid her mana. Aura could of hid at the back of her army and sent all the soldiers against her at once. Was a real chance that was enough to overwhelm Frieren with Aura's attacks as well, or if she had used the scales after all that. The scales work of your current mana, so even if Frieren has more... after a huge fight she could of potentially had less. The hidden mana method relies on forcing miscalculations, which is what makes it so deadly.
Something they do really well with the storytelling is that they give the viewer opportunities to experience in small ways what Frieren is experiencing throughout her journey. A good example is that Fern mentions in episode 2 that Frieren had recently accepted payment for a job in the form of a spell to turn sweet grapes into sour ones. Nothing is made of it at the time, it's just mentioned in passing. In episode 3 we learn that Eisen's favourite food is "grapes; the sourer the better". Again that information isn't made much of, it's basically part of a list of the heroes party's favourite foods. It's a very simple thing but that small piece of information gives added significance to the info from the previous episode regarding the spell to turn grapes sour: Frieren collected that spell specifically to benefit Eisen. Later, we see Frieren use the spell on a bunch of grapes and, again, it's not a stand-out moment, in fact I think it is part of a montage with no dialogue, but because we have 2 pieces of information already handed to us our brains leap up like primary school children with the answer 🤣 Miss, miss! I know this one! Pick me, pick me! It's a simple storytelling device but I love the way that we are given a piece of information which will gain significance later. Frieren is revisiting her 10 year journey and re-evaluating her relationships and the experiences she had back then. She has the experiences and memories in her mind, but maybe she missed a lot of the true significance or was missing some of the context the first time around. Our experience with something simple like not understanding the significance of Frieren collecting a grape-souring spell, mirrors Frieren's experience on the journey and the whole point of the journey. It puts us in Frieren's shoes and it does it more than once to keep that idea fresh in our minds. It's quite beautiful how they intertwine little snippets like that with huge scenes of massive importance sometimes. The storytelling is like a perfectly embroidered quilt (cos it's also snuggly and comforting 🤣).
11:52 the reason Frieren says that is because she would have to dispel ALL of the soldiers instead of exploding them with magic since Himmel scolded her for doing that last time. So it would give her a lot more work to dispel them and avoid all attacks at the same time.
always love to see 1st time reaction to this episode. it was so obvious whats gonna happen from the start of the episode, and yet nobody expected HOW it happened at the end.
@@sergejg9627 in german it means both and i think its good that they used it. Heaven as the final destiny and also the sky to show Himmels emotions is a perfect metaphor during the series.
In the manga you can see the images that quickly pass by after the scene when they recruit Frieren, some of those include: Himmel's party in front of the Demon King, and them running away from the dragon that Stark killed (or at least one that looks the same).
Loved your analysis of the storytelling, Dennis. I can't wait to hear what you have to say after episode 12. Not to hype it up too much, but I think that one might take the crown of your favorite from episode 6.
Now think about how Qual's life has ended, Draht was finished and think about the parallel how Aura's life ended. If you don't have picked up on it and want to think a bit for yourself, don't open the rest of the comment. If you have a guess and wanna check see below. Frieren likes to rub it in. It is written as if she uses the enemies power against the target to finish them.

No, thats not how it works.
If 1000yo Frieren is equivalent to 25yo human, 1/100 of her life (10 years) is 3 months according to human.
Well, the directors show US, in our perception of time, how Frieren feel a mere 10 years.

Frieren loves trolling demons up to the very end. I love her droll way of leading them to their deaths.

Frieren is German for Freeze, cold, frozen
Fern mean far away
Himmel mean heaven
Stark mean strong
no Himmel means sky in this case
