This movie was my introduction to Ghibli's work. Our 6th grade science teacher showed it to us before summer break. I was lucky to spend that summer in the mountains and it really got forever ingrained in my mind.

    ”You are beautiful.”
Ashitaka is not saying that San's face is beautiful.
He is saying that San's heart, or the way she lives with the wolf and nature, is beautiful.
Japanese often does not express its literal meaning.

It is often misunderstood, but Ashitaka's people are the indigenous people of northeastern Japan. In the 800s, they lost a war against the current Emperor's forces, who are from the southwest, and went into hiding in northern Japan. It is believed that they then either migrated to Hokkaido or assimilated into the Japanese population.
Eboshi was a former shrine maiden and dancer who was kidnapped by human traffickers and sold to pirates. She later became the wife of the pirate leader, but killed the pirates, including her husband, and with their wealth and guns made in China, she is trying to create an autonomous territory for discriminated people (serfs, sold women, prostitutes, lepers, foreigners).
And the Shishigami, Inugami, and Inogami. They are the lowest-ranking gods in the hierarchy of Japanese mythological gods. In the Stone Age, there were people who worshiped and revered them as gods. However, as time passed and civilization progressed, faith and reverence for nature and gods was forgotten.
The main characters of this anime are people who were rejected by the times and society.
(The story is set in the 1540s, in the midst of the Great Civil War that lasted for 150 years, with the remaining 70 years or so of war continuing.)

I am Japanese and have studied Japanese folklore. There is so much to explain in detail in this movie that it would be impossible to fit it into this comment section. If you have time, you will enjoy it even more if you research it in detail and watch it again.

Princess Mononoke is my favorite Ghibli movie.😊❤ In addition to its beautiful animation, music, and profound message, what's wonderful about this film is how it beautifully incorporates the ideas of animism and nature worship that have underpinned Japan's worldview from ancient times to the present.🌿⛩️🦌Nature is a beautiful good that brings us many blessings, but at the same time, it is also a terrible evil that brings us many disasters.
Also, at first glance, Eboshi may seem like a villain who destroys nature. However, she started her own steel industry, protects women who are victims of human trafficking and people persecuted for illness, and provides them with jobs and a stable life. She also treats men and women equally. In other words, from the standpoint of civilization and humanity, she is a protector of the weak and a strong, independent, and wonderful woman. Good and evil change depending on one's position and perspective.👼👿

Her good came at the cost of the forest. The general need for iron and industrialization increases our quality of life but also upsets the balance. The mountain only provides iron, not rice, so they must sell iron to get money to buy food. If they just grew food, they wouldnt have to worry about the iron production or defending the mountain from warlords who need iron. But if they farmed in plains, they would risk get caught up in the flames of war like the farmers ashitaka saw being massacred by samurai. The hatred in man prevents us from living peacefully with nature. Only ashitakas dwindling tribe seems to have found the balance and it only works when hidden from an ever expanding globalization, even the shogun agent is surprised to hear they are still around. The movie ends nicley, but when the message is applied to our world, it seems quite hopeless. Honestly I think its miyazakis best work and most relevant to our civlization. almost all his other stories about "coming of age" but this is about the enternal struggle of man vs nature.

Many reactors take notes on what they notice in movies (no matter where the movie is from). It helps them with discussing it after the fact and making sure they got as much info as possible).

According to director Miyazaki, Ashitaka may have returned to his hometown, or he may have brought San back with him. (Ashitaka was a prince, and in an era of polygamy, it would not have been suspicious for him to marry Kaya and San.)
Kaya is not Ashitaka's sister but his fiancée. According to the director, she is pregnant when Ashitaka is banished from the village.
Or they stayed and became blacksmiths.
The strange pattern behind the opening title depicts Ashitaka, who became one-eyed after the tale of Princess Mononoke, painted onto pottery to tell the story to future generations.

In the beginning, he was kinda told to seek his destiny outside the village. And that maybe along the way, he'll find a way to lift his curse. I'm pretty sure he was banished. He even cut his hair as a ritual and all that. Villagers weren't even allowed to watch him leave.
Besides, Ashitaka is more of a unbending heroic character. Unrealistically so. Fully representing an ideal. He just stood his neutral ground, planted his feet, and poured cement over it. And I think that makes him admirable. In my opinion, this is a more fitting ending than him just leaving all this behind. I feel like ending it on that would not serve the message.
Because AFAIK not once in this entire film did he ever mention wanting happiness or anything like that. Just his sense of duty and conviction. He only sought peace; he sought to save; and, he sought to heal. He probably feels like he found his destiny here - as the person that watches over everyone and keeps the balance. And he is indeed needed by these lands, as this is more of a new start for them than an end.
