Why travel media is dangerous for Pakistan's tourism

  • Pakistan's tourism scene is about to explode, thanks to the power of positive social media... but is that a good thing?
This talk was originally meant to be given at the controversial Pakistan Tourism Summit 2019 in Islamabad, but was cut out by the organizers once they realized its critical nature. Let's see if the internet is more open minded than they were.
People with power, feel free to get in touch if you're ever ready to have a real talk.

I have visited Pakistan three times. Tourists protection is the part of their hospitality! Evil mind people exist in every country. Pakistanies love and welcome tourists from all around the world without any difference. I love Pakistan and it's people, their culture, their food, and stunning natural beauty!! Simply mesmerizing landscapes with wonderful people. my next trip to Pakistan is in July, I will go Northern Pakistan, particularly Gilgit Baltistan. If someone willing to come to Pakistan with me I simply welcome you!

    • @saqibmudabbar
      @saqibmudabbar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

@@moodwithfood5 I think you are right. She kind of lied. She should have clarified her stance in the initial video.
Also she claims that the Pakistani government tried to censor her.
Clearly this was a privately organized event. Aimed at showing the World, the beauty of Pakistan.
In the second video she shows annoyance because of dogs barking in the background.
      Here's my conclusion:
I don't think she has bad motives. She's just trying to help.
But she failed to realize the consequences of the way she tried to help might endanger Pakistan's tourism.
I also think that some of her claims are not right. For example if people of colour travel to Pakistan. I remember that I once met a Somalian student in Pakistan and he was so happy to be there and was excited to be in Pakistan And described about the hospitality of Pakistanis.
I also met a Nepalese student, with similar reactions.
We are also extra nice to Indians and I don't even need to start to talk about how we treat Chinese.
Regardless I think some other countries have much stricter laws like Saudia Arabia or China where you can't say anything about the government let alone God. And yet they have millions of visitors every year.
The problems she mentioned are problems of the world. A tourist travelling to Pakistan is probably not gonna travel just to show of his/her athiest beliefs. Regarding the NOC thing that is also just a delay in the implementation. The visas on arrival have also already been implemented. My Chinese friends just arrived yesterday and they got visa from the airport in Islamabad.
I've seen her previous videos and she didn't seem too excited in them as well.
So I seriously believe that either this is her personality, she's a pessimistic person or she has misjudged the manifestations of her criticism.
It would be a shame though if she continues making videos like this. It'll go down in history on how a woman single handedly ruined the fate of Pakistan's tourism.
I'm even afraid what if she takes a more practical stand just to prove her point. I mean who knows? (I know I'm overthinking but I have to, after all to me my country's reputation is far more important than anything else)

I am a Pakistani woman and I feel that she is telling the truth. Please notice that the negative comments are mostly from male Pakistanis who enjoy way more privilege than us. We can not even walk alone in peace in daylight without getting harassed and stalked. They would ask us to cover ourselves in the streets out of some entitlement engraved in their upbringings. The comments only show that you are right. More Power to you Girl.

Are you a village girl?! your should know that comment will gain more likes from western males for sure, but of course you don't care, a couple of days ago I've watched a British tourist in Afghanistan that say something like "..poor girls want to show their body parts but Taliban force them to wear hijab!", you just seems can't understand how the world work, I call it the liberator mindset! you're just talking emotionally not rationally, bcoz if you're rational then you shouldn't consider the police escort as a negative thing as this girl said, you should know that one accident can ruin the tourism industry in your country and hurt your country image for years, am I right?! are you really in need to a white male or female to tell you that showing your body is ok?! is that how you promote tourism to your country? by being liberal? In Islam harassing is forbidden just like being uncovered, so whoever do such acts he did it against religion, doesn't matter male or female, but those foreigners need you to do it so they can feel like at their homes, meet girls, drink and sleep with them! are you aware of that?! just FYI the Western countries filled with stalking and harassing which thy call it catcalls and other names, they do it to locals and tourists but it's hard to see girls there talk about it, they got used to it, but they'll talk about it when happen in your country (foreign country), and that's the typical US/UK arrogance mindset, but I'm curios why did males telling you to cover yourself? are you walking streets showing your body parts? or they mean your hair?

For the viewers of this video, I am sharing a link, A brown visitor is visiting Pakistan, how he is being treated.

The tourism summit was organized by a private travel company and it was sponsored by other private travel companies. They have a big financial motive to kickstart international tourism as soon as possible, so naturally they did not want you to present a critical viewpoint. Its a shame because the current goverment is very serious about tourism and they’d welcome constructive criticism. I hope that in future, Pakistan’s government do not let these tourism summits be hijacked by these private travel companies and organize such conferences themselves.
I don’t agree about the Gora complex or colonial hangover part. I think that the positive response that these foreign travelers have received in Pakistan is not so much because they are western people but because people in Pakistan wanted to show them what we are really like and not how they’ve seen us in the western media of post-9/11 world. This to me is the main reason because even Indian visitors are given such warm welcome, because our people want to subvert their prejudices. As you showed in your video, some of these western tourists were detained also by security agencies, so being white is not necessarily advantageous.
I do want to say that as far as foreign tourism is concerned, your opinion is much more important than those vloggers because you have travelled independently and you’ve travelled a lot and spent much more time in Pakistan than them. It makes me happy that despite all these difficulties, you still came back to Pakistan many times. Thats a good sign. I hope that your sentiments reach the concerned authorities.

It’s immensely brave of you to talk about this. People don’t like having their views challenged, especially positive ones. As a local Pakistani, i can confirm some of the things she has said. The whole visa and ‘security’ checks thing I don’t know about, but yeah travellers do need to be aware of this stuff.
White people have an easier time because they look foreign. People get excited because white people are painted as paragons, and many locals don’t get to see ‘foreigners’ very often.
Many people are also very ‘traditional’. They’ll probably judge you for a lot of things. People also get angered easily when they’re beliefs are challenged, even if they have no right to that anger.
And men do make up much of the crowds you see in public, which makes traveling very daunting for women. Even me and my mum feel apprehensive going to largely male spaces even if we have important work to do there.
I’m not trying to spread hate, but this is the reality of things. Pakistan is a great country that deserves more respect than it gets, and its great that travelers like it, but those who plan on visiting need to know this stuff. Especially non-white women.
Edit: I’ve also heard Indians get treated very well. That’s great! But the concept of white people as the only type of foreigners is still very persistent. People just like foreigners in general. Again, we don’t get a lot if international traffic, so people get excited when you tell them you’re not a local. I just want people to know that. It’s not a bad thing. But you can’t expect any specific kind of treatment when you visit.

    1) Change the title of the video, most of the people who are hating on you haven't watched the entirety of the video and the title just misleads them into thinking you are against or don't believe in a positive image of Pakistan being projected to the western world.
    2) Your video is more directed towards independent travelers who come to Pakistan without the assistance of a local tourism agency, most local tourism agencies are adept at dealing with complicated bureaucratic processes and obtaining your NOCs and Visas well before your arrival in Pakistan. If you are hosted by a local, they need to notify the security agencies about your itinerary and along with your passport details, you won't be bothered by the agencies if they know who you are? what the intent of your visit is and most importantly where you will be on any given day. Also the armed escorts are only given to you in sensitive areas like Peshawar and interior regions with a history of violence. The conduct of the guard harassing that British sounding lady is despicable and it would help her fellow travelers a lot if she could file a complaint against him. My experience with security provided to foreigners has always been positive, which is not say that it cannot be otherwise.
    3) Local influencers are not given the same level of respect because 1) yes we do have a gora complex, 2) because most of them are from the cities and major hubs and tend to behave haughtily around indigenous peoples of various regions, some might even do it without even being aware of it. Accents and modes of carrying yourself differ from place to place in Pakistan, if you're in Hunza flashing your expensive equipment and talking to the locals in a prideful tone, you are likely not to get the same respect regardless of your colour. The same will be the case in the tribal regions of KPK, or the interior sindh. White - or non desi influencers are commonly treated with respect because they 'usually' ,emphasis on the usually, behave in a manner befitting a guest. Smile and speak with humility and most, if not all Pakistani's will return your kindness.
I really liked your video, it highlights a lot of issues and provides solutions for them but positive media coverage serves to combat the already prevalent negative image of Pakistan and is not dangerous but much needed especially by foreign travelers.

And indeed they must be addressed accordingly by the government of Pakistan. Being a native Pakistani and living abroad I am able to suss out your concerns better in terms of Korean proverb "change locations and think", rather than the English equivalent “put yourself in someone else’s shoes. The latter limit your capacity to see their problem and the broader context more objectively. In the end, I must say you are very articulate and visually expressive.

Thank You for making this video. I am a Pakistani and I totally agree with all the points discussed here wonderfully, since many of my foreigner friends have time to time highlighted issues like these while travelling in Pakistan. I hope Eva sees this and it would be interesting to see her response on this.

    Dear Alex,
First of all you are welcome to Pakistan again n again n again…
but not as a gora traveler …..we will respect you as human being.
I am bit confused, if someone is good with u, hosts u or tries to help u, u put a tag of so-called “gora complex”...
.and if security people are concerned about you, you blame them as harassment to a women. Or to travelers..
It’s the other way around for many many people traveling to Pakistan they think that hospitality is part of our culture and its a strength rather than weakness
and security they are getting is for there safety...and its for free, we tax payers pay for your security(I hope that things improve in future)
I suggest that u should do some homework before commenting on something….if people r courteous to u esp as a women it is a culture of Pakistan and Islam that we treat u as a guest, not because of gora…
1:HARASSMENT from security agencies Mandatory armed escorts
as Pakistanis we have been through hell regarding terrorism in last 15 years
    from mosques to churches
from road side hotels to 5 star hotels
    from bus stations to airports
from military installation to a private property
    from highways to streets
from residential areas to commercial markets,
parks, places of worship, religious gatherings. Ceremonies, concerts…even the hospitals.. Madam u name it
and if security people are concerned about you, you blame them as harassment to a women..or to travelers .. u just said you have travelled 60 countries, so till now you should have a better temperament as a traveler sorry to say u lack a bit ,
God forbid if there are have 100 bomb blasts in any European country or in USA and ur tourist economy is threatened for example Paris than u will be in a better state of mind to understanding… Harassment from security agencies n Mandatory armed escorts….and in our cast it was not the tourist economy it was an existential threat to us…
I am hosting travelers from my school days from more than 35 years, I was never harassed by any security agency, so don’t plant things which doesn’t have a solid proof and if u r looking for exceptions you will always find something to object but u need to know you don’t live in a perfect world, and as I said earlier after traveling 60 countries u should have developed some positive temperament to coexist.
    2:Unofficial travel restrictions
Yes they need to make things more clear
    3:Unclear bureaucratic procedures
This can be concern for some but my experience is that I found most of the bureaucratic procedures very clear like visa extension etc
Why don’t u forgot to mention that Pakistan is most probably (one of my Belgian friend who travelled 90 countries told me) the only country in the world which gives u 6 months visa extension for free.
So in the end I would say Madam there must be things which needs improvement in Pakistani tourism no one is denying that but U need to be bit more positive about what others do to u and keep in mind the language and cultural differences and enjoy diversity because as a experienced traveler (60 countries) u must know that as a traveler we don’t leave home for search of a home…
I hope next time when u visit Pakistan u won’t have pain in ASS (AS U SAID in ur vlog “PAKISTAN IS ACTUALLY A PAIN IN THE ASS TO TRAVEL IN’) and peace should prevail forever in PAKISTAN.
    love from Pakistan

This is not criticism; this is blackmailing. She when to meet Prime Minister. why she didn't tell him? she made a video and tell the world, don't go to Pakistan. she did speak to conference, she is liar. Get up! this good what we do to them is our weakness and they are using it against us. Stop her pointing finger on us. Tell her to go to US first where they undress my country's prime minister on the name of security.

Dear Alex I, as a student of M.A in planning and management of tourism systems completely agree with every single point you raised!
People as well as the government have closed their eyes by the fact that the current model of promoting tourism in Pakistan is not sustainable at all !!! Social media hypes falls down more quickly than they rise . What will happen if few influencers will share videos of not very good experiences?
Your feedback and critical approach to the issues are very useful. If i were at any influential position I must have let all the concerning people listen to you.
I really appreciate that despite all the possible criticism you stood up and said what had to be said.
    Thank you very much !

I totally agree with you, actually it is more than that, it is considered taboo if someone from here in Pakistan tries to self-critisize, or just say someone points towards something, he/she is believed to be some kind of alien. Dissent is never allowed. Their is ego behind every thing, they have very wrong perceptions regarding foreign people, and they keep boosting the same.

Are you mental gora compex😂😂😂 we all know darrey Sammy is a black guy from West indeas but almost every person in pakistan love him and respect him even he also admitted this many time you are totally wrong

    • @abdullahahmed4229
      @abdullahahmed4229 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Darren Sammy is a very poor example. He is not only black but also a cricketer who came to Pakistan at a very crucial time. When there was almost no international cricket in Pakistan.
I am from Rawalpindi, and I can tell you, the place where my family lived, where I was born, it was called Qasimabad. My family moved out to a different distant place about 10 years ago, but I still go there from time to time as my relatives still live there. It is not as much developed place as some other areas of Rawalpindi. There black people from poor African countries living there who don't get half as much respect as Darren Sammy. So yes, Darren Sammy is a poor example here. He is not respected because he is a foreigner and/or black, but also a great cricketer who came to Pakistan when many didn't, at a very crucial time for Pakistan, and a great guy at heart.
