My response to the original video would be "where is an actual argument an atheist would make?" Ever single one of them *might* be used as a rebuttal to specific theistic claims, but not as an argument against deities in general, nor the Abrahamic God in particular.
I think a lot of these arguments are used, and often used in a way that doesn't mean what it used to. It's the issue with a catchy phrase. People use it because it's easy to remember even if they don't understand it. You see it all the time. What *could* be the case, is that Redeemed Zoomer saw these arguments used by people who either didn't understand them or else didn't communicate them well and didn't investigate further (ofc some of the arguments were just stupid to begin with).
The title says 'atheist arguments' not 'arguments for atheism'. Crucial nuance; the arguments talked about are arguments given *by* prominent atheists.

@@goldwhitedragonbro I see you in every single comment thread. Your arguments aren't as good as you think they are. Stop, seriously you're actually bloody defending the religious apologist? Wow
everything we have found out about the universe so far, leans FAR more towards "the big bang theory" rather than "the allmighty creator theory." jesus has not had his second coming my boy. simmer down.
And it's actually worse than it seems without historical context. Women were property, treated as sex slaves, and people were encourages to get slaves from other nations. Yahweh in the OT is like Tuco combined with a genocidal ruler.
I think many people don't understand that silence means agreement when you have enough systemic power. And God had all of the systemic power Imagine living in a democracy where slavery is still legal. There's a vote going on on whether we should abolish it. You're a part of the privilaged group so you can vote. By not participating you're supporting the status quo. You're allowing the slavery to continue, even if in a small way Voting is the least one can do to keep your country from going into a shitter. I recommend
According to their own account, their own deity literally created the circumstances by which people were held as slaves. YHWH is the literal cause of the Jews having slaves. The story is literally: Hebrew Children: 'We're leaving our enslavement in Egypt and we don't currently have any slaves.' YHWH: 'This is what you need to do if you want to have slaves.'
If jesus was against slavery then his two interactions with slaves seem rather bizarre..... Luke 7 for example.. If you are against slavery and some dude send for you to heal his slave and you do it without mentioning that slavery is bad, then you are really inconsistent with your morals..
I tried to find Redeemed Zoomer's testimony, but he is as impressively vague and evasive as J. Warner Wallace and other apologists. All I could find about his testimony is that he went to a Christian music camp as a teen (he doesn't say exactly what age) and while there, nobody tried to preach to him, he was just impressed by how nice the Christians were and so he joined a Presbyterian church. He does not disclose how he learned about Christianity before the camp, how he found himself at the Christian camp in the first place, or even the month or year of his conversion.
I never want to call someone a liar especially in a situation like this one here but I can confidently say that this man is absolutely a liar if he really said the things you listed above. I'm someone that grew up in the Assembly of god church which has many church camps all over the USA and they ALL preach and "witness" to the children literally every day multiple times a day for hours. There are prayers and bible study after breakfast then prayer at lunch with a few bible verses. Then after dinner there's multiple hours of singing, crying, and worshiping in a church service with alter calls and emotionally moving speeches that feature speaking in tongues and being slain in the spirit. After church there is a fire with prayer and fun that can be attended or walks around the lake to pray. To be fair there are plenty of fun times at church camps but anyone that says the camp didn't preach to them is 100% a LIAR outright because the whole point of the church camps are to "bring the kids closer to god". I mean it's literally in the brochures! It's not like the camps are trying to hide that fact because its a feature of the camps to preach to the kids. If the camps didn't preach to the kids the parents would be furious. Also for the record I attended multiple church camps from different religions/denominations when I was growing up because my parents allowed me to attend my friends religious camps to try and convert them to the "correct" religion. (Crazy how it was always ours that was right!). I was also allowed to attend church camps of other churches that closely related our religion like Methodist for example. The assembly of god church camps are EXACTLY like what you saw in those religion camp videos with the crazy lady who calls Harry Potter a warlock and an enemy of god lol. The AOG church was the camp that had the most worship time compared to the other camps that I attended but trust me there is no way that anyone could go to any church camp from any religion and not get preached to. That is literally impossible because that is the goal of church camp. Fun is secondary to preaching to the kids and indoctrinating them deeply.
@@Maintenance_Mark I agree and thank you for sharing! I could believe that nobody preached to him at a Chrisian music camp because everyone there just assumed he was Christian too, but atheist teens never just randomly decide to go to a Christian camp, there is always a friend or someone who invites them. I'd bet a paycheck his real conversion began before the camp.
Huh, interesting. I listened to a bunch of this guy's videos a few days ago and only detail I got was that he grew up in a "progressive secular" home and then converted later.

I like that the bible disagrees with suffering existing because we deserve it. In the Book of Job while he's being tormented, Job's friends show up and all insist that he must deserve this for -some- reason. At the end of the book, God has a big monologue that in part calls out Job's friends for being wrong.
Yeah God just wanted to make Job miserable in order to prove satan wrong and show that God loves him still even though he’s taking everything from him and making job live a miserable life and die. Just sounds like an awful codependent relationship
That's an obvious lie. Satan's argument was that Job only had the relationship he had with God, because God gave him so much stuff. After Job proved Satan wrong it says God gave him many times over more than what he had before. 4:27 It's interesting to hear that, because that is me: Living in a Muslim Theocracy where Atheism is illegal, and yet I became an Atheist of my own volition through my own contemplation at age 12 before I even knew about the term Atheism. However I do not argue that living in this situation will make you "likely" a Muslim, as so many of the people I knew were, many of which I would consider smarter than myself. It is also noteworthy to say that even though my household wasn't shaped in a way where they were directly encouraging me to be an Atheist, my parents were irreligious and religion was never enforced or encouraged in my home, and skeptical thinking (although not directly) was praised. So ultimately yes, the environment does have certain impact, but it isn't the final arbiter. A major reason for the slave Bible was that the slave masters did not want the slaves hearing about the Exodus and getting ideas about running away. That isn't because the Exodus story repudiates slavery. It just provides a mythic example of an enslaved people getting away from their enslavers. The story then, with near immediacy, begins to describe all of the ways that the deity thinks are ok to enslave people if you are one of his people. Further, not only does the Christian Bible tell slaves to obey their Masters. The Christian Bible explicitly endorses the Master-Slave paradigm as a way of being by literally describing Chrisitians as slaves to Christ.

The analogy of a broken clock working twice a day feels so apt for this. Some people properly identified that, twice a day, the broken clock was "right" and then built a framework around those instances. Of course, with enough cognitive gymnastic and other efforts, you can end up having somewhat of a grasp on the time of day based on the two times you know the broken clock is "right". And then these people get their panties in a twist over the fact that some people just don't rely on a broken clock.
I'd think it would be cool if you responded to some of these short theist videos, Matt. Firstly, because these new generations want short videos to entertain themselves, and secondly, it would make good material to publish on various pages about atheism.

Science can neither prove nor disprove God. That coming from a theist is a self-defeating statement, considering how apologists argue that scientific discoveries reveal things about the universe that allegedly point to a transcendent, personal creator. The statement that science can neither prove nor disprove God is false, but if that person believes it, they should be agnostic.
"Why does god let any bad things happen?" "Because we deserve it." I wonder how this guy would feel if one of his parents beat him up even though he wasn't doing anything wrong, and when he asks them why they did that, they responded with "Because you deserved it". Would he really think to himself "Well fair enough tbh, I am a filthy human not deserving of any love or kindness"? I mean, maybe he would think that, but how awful of a thing would that be to think? By this logic, anytime anyone does something bad to us, instead of trying to fight back, we should just throw our hands up and go "Yeah I deserve this tbh". A kid starts beating you up in school? Don't fight back! Just sit there and take it like god's good little boy or girl. After all, you deserve it :) Aren't theists just so loving? I'm sorry, but you cannot say that a being that says we deserve bad things also loves us. That is just completely contradictory.
This is a strawman argument you've just written. You have to understand what the concept of God even is, God is considered to be an all-knowing, all-powerful being. God is not a human who makes mistakes and has flaws, The argument for why we humans deserve to suffer on this planet (and why God allows it to happen) is because sin was introduced to humanity in the garden of Eden, and so fourth humans are born into sin, The philosophy of Christianity is that we are to suffer on this planet because by human nature (the physical body) we are corrupted but can by free will choose to purify ourselves through God where when the second judgement comes God will cleanse the planet and anybody who chose (out of their own free will) to reject God and his philosophy shall be separated from God (Which separation from God is considered to be hell because of how pure God's essence is) Thereby honoring their choice of free will not to choose him.
@@OctaviusCeaser Yeah, no, it's not a strawman for me to not accept your subjective definition of god and instead treat him like I would treat any other agent. I once had a 4h drive with a pastor and he said: "Don't you want to be Christian, just for the possibility that there is a God? It's better you believed and it's not true than not believing and getting into hell." That flabbergasted me. First of all the audacity that of all those millions of religions, it should be Christianity that I must do. And then I feel like that if there was a God and he'd not let me into heaven because I didn't believe in him, though he didn't give me enough reason to believe in him AND though I lived to the best of my morals, I wouldn't WANT to follow him/get into heaven. The only reasonable thing that a friend of mine once said, was that she felt guided and that she fell sorry I didn't feel the love and the purpose in my life.
The only two religions that believe in eternal hell are Christianity and Islam, so it makes no difference if any of the other religions are true or false. When Jesus says "[the unrighteous] will go away into everlasting punishment", his statement must be either true or not true. Considering the fact that he tells the truth about other things, is it not reasonable to believe he's telling the truth about hell?

exactly. I find myself doubting that he's actually representing the atheist statements/questions accurately or even in the right context.

And God had all of the systemic power
Imagine living in a democracy where slavery is still legal. There's a vote going on on whether we should abolish it. You're a part of the privilaged group so you can vote. By not participating you're supporting the status quo. You're allowing the slavery to continue, even if in a small way
Voting is the least one can do to keep your country from going into a shitter. I recommend
According to their own account, their own deity literally created the circumstances by which people were held as slaves. YHWH is the literal cause of the Jews having slaves. The story is literally:
Hebrew Children: 'We're leaving our enslavement in Egypt and we don't currently have any slaves.'
YHWH: 'This is what you need to do if you want to have slaves.'
It all boils down to special pleading/interpretation/not literal
It's a storybook with little to no redeeming value let alone wisdom

In any case, thank you for this... I love seeing you putting out more individual content.
I loved this format I could watch it all day
Science can neither prove nor disprove God. That coming from a theist is a self-defeating statement, considering how apologists argue that scientific discoveries reveal things about the universe that allegedly point to a transcendent, personal creator. The statement that science can neither prove nor disprove God is false, but if that person believes it, they should be agnostic.
Hey Matt, I don't watch a lot of your videos on your personal channel (I watch the call-in shows), but this video was FIRE!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Keep 'em coming!
Love this format. I, personally, like hearing you point out the fallacy name.
This was great. Keep doing these point by point dismantling type videos.
Please, please continue making more videos in this format. Love it.
Love this type of content, Matt! Great video
Happy Friday Matt! Keep up the good work!
I like the response format. Especially because your responses aren’t scripted.
I think I love this content already. Keep up the good work Matt. I would love to see more of this 👌
"Why does god let any bad things happen?"
"Because we deserve it."
I wonder how this guy would feel if one of his parents beat him up even though he wasn't doing anything wrong, and when he asks them why they did that, they responded with "Because you deserved it".
And btw, even if I accept the Adam and Eve story, how exactly does it make sense to punish a bunch of people that aren't Adam and Eve for what they did? Does that sound like justice to you? If one person in a town commits a crime, do we arrest the entire town, or just that one person? Literally one second of critical thinking exposes your god for the pathetic and despicable being he is. Get over it.
More please. Because sure others have done this as well, but getting the methodical, almost mathematical Matt Approach to this is something completely different, and it just shows why the content stays fresh.
So again, yes, more please. 😊
Saying that Christianity was against slavery hundreds of years later doesn’t address the fact that the Bible itself condones it.
Really like it so far. I have to stop watching to do something else unfortunately but the first 10 minutes are already great! Calm, reasonable explanations, viewpoints and just straight out content you can learn from.
I stopped listening to most call in shows for a good while now as I just can’t stand the same stupid arguments made every week again while the hosts try to be reasonable. It somehow annoys me and make stresses me more than me actually learning something. This however is nice and refreshing. A good look into some „arguments“ and how the other side might reply and how you interpret that.
Nice Job Matt, thank you!
I'd love to see more of these. Please keep doing this.
Love this kinda format! Please continue Matt!
Matt in his element: Demolishing Christian apologism.
I never comment but I will for this video. Please keep doing these ,matt. I enjoyed hearing your take so much more than our atheist
The point you make at 18:55 about religions' exploitative nature is spot on. I was raised in a jehovahs witness family, who are known for attracting (or maybe more accurately, targetting) people with depression and other depressive disorders. Its quite honestly disgusting and disgraceful.
this was nice, since in this kind format you do not fly so easily of the handle. While sometimes your anger is understandable, your more calculated and quite response is simply more pleasant to listen to and to follow.
Matt, I wish you would react to these. We need you. A lot of these videos reach millions, and if you were there to share your knowledge, it would certainly help a lot of people.
I once had a 4h drive with a pastor and he said: "Don't you want to be Christian, just for the possibility that there is a God? It's better you believed and it's not true than not believing and getting into hell."
That flabbergasted me.
I believe that people who are Christian because of Pascal's wager are automatically sent to hell.
@@davidbenjamin7165 OK, well you can't be a Christian and Muslim at the same time, so that's a moot point.
His claim that Western/Christian civilization was the first to abolish slavery because of moral reasons, is simply false.
Which was the first?
@Cicada-Screams Not sure who did it first, but there were societies which did ot earlier. The Qin emperor abolished it, just to name one. There's also several societies that never practised slavery in the first place.
@@Cicada-Screams Good question.
Several nations throughout history have banned slavery at different points in time.
There were abolitionists in china, england, and probably other parts of the world i don't know about.
But the first nation to abolish chattel slavery that was started by the atlantic slave trade was Haiti, also the first black republic.
The people of haiti usually identify as catholic, but they also, in their own words, serve the Lwa.
The Lwa are spiritual beings of great power, and there are priests and practicioners of haitian vodou who communicate and make deals with the Lwa for various things.
You may make an offering to the Lwa for safe travels, for example.
Many haitians probably interact with the Lwa more than they practice any form of christianity.
@@momentmoment-4this feels ai, could you write a poem about oranges?
I love how OP chose all the weakest arguments he could find and somehow STILL failed to debunk them
St. Ignatius never actually wrote that he knew John in any of his seven surviving works. That was a later attribution by the biggest Christian liar of all time, Eusebius, almost 200 years after St. Ignatius died.
Yes, looking into apologetic claims has always resulted in them being even worse than I imagined.
What I can’t stand is his cocky “gotcha” tone/attitude while he spews barely coherent gobblededook. We can almost play logical fallacy bingo and this level of incompetence might even be impressive but this snarky religious fervor is just insufferable.
He has a know-it-all attitude in general. Even when he talks about other Christian thinkers, you get the feeling there isn't anyone whose ideas he really respects.
To everyone reading these comments - I just got back from seeing the Movie “The Ark and the Darkness.” It was the most comprehensive, scientific critique of the Biblical story of creation and Noah’s flood that I have ever seen. The whole show was narrated by a team of PhDs -Microbiologists, Geologists, Paleontologists, Medical Doctors, Historians, Engineers, Physicists, etc. All of these people had received their doctorates from accredited universities (It names them all). I HIGHLY recommend go seeing this film.
i am an atheist and I still felt secondhand embarrassment for the theist who made the original video.
