Grants are normally for non-profits, government, and quasi-public organizations. While not all for-profits are eligible for grant funding, some are! Those with community impact or those that have high capital costs to do their research and development are sometimes eligible.

Would you say working for a political party would go under this type of for profit work? Do you know if that happens, grant writers working for a political party?

Curious, I’ve heard a few times that it’s unethical for a grant writer to be paid a percentage of the grant. It seems that has created opportunity for predatory and unethical practices on behalf of grant writers to be paid without producing the grant for the paying party.

Hey Chad! Thats correct, it is unethical. You can't use funds to pay the grant writers for work that has already been completed.

Let’s say I’m the owner of a large company and have millions of dollars to give away, and I happen to find a for-profit company that has a mission I believe in that I want to help them to forward. I don’t want their equity, I just want to give them the money they need so they don’t have to crowdfund anymore. Can I create a grant as a large business/owner that is tailored to them so that I can give them the money, and not run afoul of federal gift tax being levied against me (I would be making a very large donation)
