This is what a podcast should be. I could listen to you two talk for hours about boredom. You make philosophy fun. Not pretentious, not overly academic, and certainly not boring. This is easily becoming one of my favorite podcast series. Keep it the hell up!
not sure if this is what you meant by this but this is actually a very interesting way of living your life - keeping yourself set on the present moment, not filling your mind with anxieties of your own value and meaning and instead finding meaning in the present moment, the only tangible, real thing in life
Great podcast. Definitely hit home! I find Existentialism incredibly refreshing as an answer to the absurdity of existence, esp. Nietzsche, Camus, Sartre, Dostoevsky and Kierkegaard. And on the other Zen Buddhism, Stoicism and Taoism, with a little bit of psychology. Philosophy has been a sort of epiphany or wake up call, I never really bothered with it - now it comprises the meaning of my life. Only been less than six months, however, I'm forever grateful, and seek to inspire others as well.
I’ve had a very similar epiphany and journey over the last year or so, and and so grateful i’ve found such wonder voices as the ones you list and of course thinkers like sisyphus55 and mystiverse. If i may suggest you also look into the ecocentric side of philosophy. The Tao is a great example of this in following the way of nature.
Thank you for this video. I was crying my eyes out at 1 am alone feeling fed up and bored with life, and after scrolling for a couple minutes trying to find something this showed up in my recommended and calmed me down a lot. I appreciate what you are doing! Psychology and philosophy is the shit!
This made me think about day dreaming as an escape to boredom. I can only really daydream when I am moving and listening to music. I need a physical and mental distraction to allow my imagination to flow. Does anyone else day dream like this?
yes! But I found that it doesn't allow my thoughts to flow as fluidly as they deserve to. So something I started was listening to the sounds of nature and traffic when I'm out for a walk. :) Because there's a natural unpredictable rhythm to the world, it allows more presence I find. Also, the world is ending and we only have so long to enjoy and know our surroundings so hearing the world I was given feels like I'm taking it back as much as I, as one person, can.
I find ambient music great for this. Usually more intense and lyrical stuff just makes me focus on it, but gimme some dungeon synth and the brain goes good
I don't think I've ever commented on a video before, but I feel like I have to here. Your content is phenomenal, and you have a great way of distilling larger works and ideas into specific subjects, creating a great listen. Keep up the amazing work!
Hmmmm yes i love existential dread, also I think boredom is very useful. I learned that I actually like to read one day when the internet was gone so I think boredom is created to learn something new or to do something useful. Boredom challenges you to escape it
Havent listend to the podcast yet but i wanna write my thoughts on this question, because ive struggled with this for most of my life. I am now working with disabled people and in order to help them even a little i have to feel good myself, so theres another/ bigger reason apart from my own well being to look after and work on myself!
Yeah I think that we are guided by emotions, and the instrument for that is the reason I really like philosophy and physics because when I question myself about existence, when I struggle to understand something but then I get it, I feel happiness, I feel this fulfilment. We seek the answers of the universe for dopamine...
I tried being driven by reason and/or emotions and found myself manu times throughout the years wondering what happened to my life. I realized it was *me* driving that was the issue. Now i don't drive my life at all and find myself more at peace.
Thank you guys! Got me thinking about the place of stress, even useful stress in relation to break time and boredom. I hope you guys find joy in your work as well.
Never been so early! Love your podcast! Just want to let you know that I'm an artist and I'm having an upcoming exhibition that discuss about existentialism and your videos have helped me out a lot!
i rarely ever feel boredom, i actually feel that what i tend to get is the inverse of it : rather than having time to fill with nothing to do i always have things i could do with no time to do them. i do fill my mind with too much distraction from my phone, but i wouldn't describe the state before as boredom i think, i feel it more as a compulsion to give myself some satisfaction. i realise it doesn't sound that different, but it rarely ever feels like i'm bored, more like i'm trying to motivate myself to do by giving myself a treat. if i'm not doing anything, my mind is always doing something, even if i have access to nothing my brain will be talking to itself. so i never feel that i wish i had something to to do, because i'm always doing something, if only internally, and unfortunately, that often means i don't do things i'd want to plan.
This is a very thought provoking topic and I love that both of you are passionate in sharing your thoughts regarding the question. Looking forward for more interesting videos!
Too nice... Love the episode, too many good ideas came to me from this episode, really love it. Like you said, or like i understand, boredom is like a fear that doesn't exist but we all have the fear to experiment, and is the same that make us run away from it to don't fall in. Something like that... Non't native, sorry if someone reads this.
About the question of whether you'd like to know if your SO cheated on you or not, I always ask people that question and most people would say they'd like to know... but it seems like they make that decision based on the premise that they already know about the cheating. I think a lot of people are unable to consider the question from a position of not having opened the box containing schrodinger's cat.
I'm exercising the time honored/proven survival strategy of energy conservation. Justified indolence perhaps but I consider that simply an unexpected feature/benefit.
The Lolita example is a bit perplexing. If I’m not mistaken the purpose of the novel was to be morally conflicting and get into the abnormality of Humbert’s mental processing. (Spoiler) Hes an unreliable narrator that romanticises his actions and their ‘relationship’. He kills her mother, manipulates her into being codependent upon him and his goal with the relationship is to fulfil his own needs and often ignores hers. He benefits at her expense. The dissonance is brought about due to the narrators unreliability and it leads to the text seeming like a romance novel when really it’s horror. So it can be assumed it’s not only appealing to emotions but it’s also objectively wrong. I understand on the surface where the comparison got there but idk just felt like I had to add the two cents. This was a great conversation tho!
Thani you for saying this, it sounds to me like these two must’ve never actually read or watched ‘Lolita’, because this would be such a terrible reading of the text. Lolita was about an abuser, a child molester, FROM the perspective of the abuser. His delusions of grandeur about their love, and the ways he justified his actions to himself. The text itself gives this away most clearly at the end. Humbert seeks out a now adult Lolita to talk to her, finds her (now married and a mother), and tries to apologize for ‘what he did to her’. She responds coldly, and slams the door in his face. She never wanted it. She was a child. He was her guardian, and he took advantage of her when she had no other choice and no one else to turn to. The same goes for why people instinctively have such a strong repulsion to any cases of incest and pedophilia. Those situations carry an implied power imbalance or abuse situation, and while you may in fact find a very rare example of something like incest where there is no abuse and it is fully consensual, most of those situations imply some form of abuse and/or Stockholm syndrome, even if the victim is not currently seeing it that way while they are still in it.
For me it has always been fear. Fear of the world breaking apart for good if I don't do what I can to prevent it. Many days this fear kept me glued to my bed, but on other days it makes me get out of it. I'm letting go of this fear more and more. Life is not a race, trying to outrun the bad things. It isn't because I don't want to see it that way anymore. Right now I don't have anything to fill the void, that the fear will leave after, with. And even a sense of this void is the most uncomfortable feeling I have ever felt. But I will find something healthier than fear, to fill it up again. I am sure of that.
I don't have any issue staring at the ceiling in my room for hours at a time immersed in my own thoughts.. I actually do this regularly. It's better than socializing unless I've come up with something I wish to share. Anything beyond that is just a distraction.
I believe boredom does partially stem from evolution. Those that couldn’t stop and sit around, and instead kept searching for food, water, and shelter, were more likely to survive
Yeah, the logic is that our every emotion and reaction is evolutionarily advantageous in one way or another. Boredom could be another mutation just like conscious thought, but it could also be the reinforced evolutionary trait that helped us advance. I think boredom is the mother of invention tbh. If we were constantly pursuing survival goals, we'd never be able to pursue life-goals. Which is why I believe we are trained from childhood to think that we must always be working, moving, earning. When we take time to be bored, we take time to reflect and know what's in us and what's around us. That gives us power.
Yeah, I think that even when we believe we are technically doing nothing like laying in bed, we are still very doing something. The reason why we classify it as nothing is because we don't want that do be our something.
Just a bed thought but the white backroom is hard for the eye when you're in the dark. As I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking that and it's not a bad thing for the one who don't look at the screen or else a darker background could be a nice addition! Other than that thanks for the great content!
53:00 I have a point to make about it In the punic war between Rome and Carthage there was a naval battle between them and Roman generals asked for a signal from the gods and it was raining storm which is bad omen for a battle but they didn't care they went there but they lost this is the least free will you can know or you can call it Roman arrogance but it still a way just like Spartacus the slave that had omens of being a king then we all know what happened to him I don't really remember he either died or killed himself Free will was there too. because even if God said like hi you are going to be successful but you said no that is free will or you fucked up that is free will a will to fail none the less or like when did stoicism begin it was like hey you have free will to react how you want to react to bad things
Here's another theory; The subconscious sends us the *"I'm bored"* signal, when not enough information is present for analysis. I'm surely not _omniscient,_ so...
