    The heat and salt method is one of the traditional methods to quickly treat for Ichthyophthirius multifiliis aka Ich or Ick. This method is suited for tropical fish who can tolerate higher temperatures.

    Salt and Gradual temperature increases to 86 degrees worked for me every time. Just keep the temp at or around 85 after treatment to keep the safety of your fish in mind. Tropical fish do not mind temps in the mid 80s.

      +AquaStudent you said 2 tablespoons per 5 gallons or even up to 5 tablespoons PER GALLON....did you mean up to 5 tablespoons per 5 gallons or per gallon??? Sorry i just want to get this right and not harm my fish.... But anyway ive heard aquarium salt is good for ciclids anyway

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +TheRudy1629 I did find a resource that used 5 TBS per gallon (which is very concentrated). I probably wouldn't go over 2 TBS per gallon. You would want to increment it up to that limit anyway. Sudden changes are not desirable.
      It's good that you want to get it right. I think you should start somewhere around 2 TBS per 5G and then increment up to a total of 1 TBS per gallon after a day or two. Monitor the fish and adjust accordingly.
      I think I ended up using about 1-2 TBS per gallon during the treatment discussed in this video.
      Best of luck! Hopefully you can beat this protozoan problem.

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TheRudy1629 This method worked very well for me. I'd only recommend this method for fish that can withstand the higher temperatures. If you can move your fish to a smaller tank and use medicines that's fine too. I wouldn't recommend using something like meth blue in your primary tank because of the stain.
      Also, if you have scaleless fish many of the meditations can be fatal. You'll have to look into the specifics for your case.

We'll see what happens from here, my fish usually thrive at around 83 F because i'm heavily into Bettas so they should be fine.

    I only had ich once when I adopted some infected loaches. I started with three days of half-dosing 'Nox-Ich' medication and then a 50% water change, adding back the carbon filter to soak up the rest of the medication, and then about a week for raised temperature and light aquarium salt. All 30 of my fish made it alive and well, with just some unhealthy plants as casualties. I'm not saying that's the correct way to do it, I'm just sharing my experience in case it helps more people. Ultimately I think I've avoided ich ever since simply by keeping nitrates out of the water and being careful with new fish.

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think advancements in medications have made them much more potent and safer. Meds are probably a better way to treat for most strains and for most fish...but there is some logic to the old methods.

    Ugh I've been using ich x for an entire 2wks now.. Its like every other day i see no spot but continue treatment bc life cycle and boom new spots next day! I even bumped up dosing from the min 24hrs to max 8hrs. I was dumb and cocky and put new fish in after 8yrs no issues. I noticed right away fish had it and removed even started treating next day! It's not bad but not going away! I have plants and corydora so I'm afraid of salt but starting to slooowly turn up heat. I've lost 4 going on 5 new guppys who didn't even show spots. I'm tired of 40% water changes 2x a day in a 55g plus taking care of a newborn.

    I wish I had found your videos earlier today. I have a 38 gallon tank that have two fish in it right now, a male rainbow fish and a female molly that both have ick. The pet store suggested I use Kordon Copper-Aid to get rid of the ick. I already added the treatment to the tank this morning. My concern is that I've been doing a lot of research on ick and I'm coming across SO many conflicting strategies to getting rid of ick. Some say to remove carbon from filter if you add treatment, some say to add treatment and turn up the heat, some say if you add treatment and turn up the heat you will kill your fish. Some say to do water changes every day.... Please help. There's no information on the packaging of the ick treatment and no helpful advice on Kordon's website. I've had my rainbow fish for over a year and I bought this big tank for him so I could buy more Rainbow fish. The female molly was purchased four days ago and she's the cause of the ick outbreak, I did quarantine her but only for two days - i should have waited longer (since she's a dalmatian I didn't see any spots). Thank you for your videos and your time.

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Treating with meds is a good option. Don't worry about adjusting the temperature. Keep it at your normal temp. Remove carbon from your filter as the carbon can remove the meds. Follow the treatment on the packaging (it'll say to give a certain amount depending on the volume). Keep treating for at least 3-4 days (better yet a week) after you see the last white spot.
      Hit it early and hit it hard to give your fish the best chance.
      Since you're treating with meds you shouldn't also do the salt and heat method. The medication method should be preferred over salt and heat anyway.
      Best of luck!

    I am writing this to help you all after successfully treating my fish ich because after i find my fish was suffering from ich, i searched a lot on internet watched a lot of videos but i got very jumbled answers so lets start
    1- put your fish to another empty tank(u can also use a big bucket like me if you dont have another tank) and fill it using 50 percent of your tank water and 50 percent of fresh water (believe me this step is really important in my opinion i have lost a fish due to this so do it if you dont want to loose any of your fish)
    2- put heater and filter in this tank too and raise the temp to 30 C or 86 F( warning-some fish dont bear this temp so it will be good to search on internet whether your fish will suvive this temp or not and if not follow the next step leaving this step).
    3- add rock salt (aquarium salt) 1 table spoon per gallon(1 gallon =3.7litre)(tips for indians- you can use sendha namak also known as vrat ka namak which is used in fasting remember the key is you can use any white salt which dont have extra iodine added in it)
    3- add anti ich (also known as blue liquid or methylene blue) in proportion 1 ml per 5 litre water but you have to read description behind anti ich bottle first, as proportion for different products may differ and try to check both offline and online stores, i purchased from offline store in very cheap rate of 30 rupees)(some people dont use anti ich they use only temp change and salt addition but i dont wanted to do any experiment with my fished so i added anti ich).
    4- this step is also very important try to keep your fish in less lighting u can turn off your aquarium light and if u doing this in bucket you can cover it 80 percent.
    5-change 30 percent water in 1 or 2 days(i did everyday) and add required amount of salt and anti ich according to the water you removed from your tank)(you can clear sponge if you have internal filter like mine everytime you change the water by rinsing and squizing it in the water you removed from your tank, this is optional do, it if you can i did this).
    And This is all you have to do and strictly remember dont stop feeding your fishes and also treating may take 10 to 15 days to cure completely (in my case it take almost 10 days). Ich parasite do not remain alive without any host fish after 48 hours. That is how i treated my fish hope this helps....☺️☺️

    I need help please. I'm not really sure if my comet fish is sick or if something else is wrong with it. When I first bought my comet, it was swimming around and happy but maybe like 2-3 days after I got it started not swimming as much but the other comet that I got together with that is just fine and healthy though. The one that doesn't swim much would pretty much just lay at the bottom of the tank and won't really move much. It's gills and fins are still moving but I also noticed that it doesn't really move its tail very much. When it does swim only its fin would move around a bit but it's tail doesn't really move back and forth like it should. So I'm really worry if something is wrong with it and if there's anything I can do to make it healthy again or if I should consider moving it out to a separate tube so my other comets doesn't get infected too? Please help!

      Hello Sakura. Not sure what could be causing it. Depending on what it is you may need to treat the whole tank, not just the infected one.
      What are your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and water temperature)? Take a look on a search engine for "lethargic goldfish" or "goldfish diseases" and see if there is anything that matches the symptoms.

      Wow, even after a quarantine? I had ick too recently and it infected every one of my freshwater tanks, same tools for waterchanges, and some relocations of some fish.
      I first thought about doing saltwater dips, but that is a lot of work if there are a lot of fast fish in the tank. Since the protozoan is already in the water I dosed with the salt I use for my saltwater tank.
      I used to use the chemicals a long time ago, colors the water, have to do tons of waterchanges.
      So with the salt method I swear it only took 4 days for the ick to disappear completely. I still did waterchanges, smaller ones and the heat was about 82 to 84 degrees since it is summer now.
      I was so amazed by how well this method worked. Especially since I just had purchased new fish and no aquarist wants to loose a whole batch of new fish.

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are better off setting up a separate hospital tank and treating all the fish in that. If there are no fish in the main (planted) tank for awhile, the Ich won't be able to reproduce and will make the tank safe again. You can then treat all the fish (since all have been exposed) using medications in the hospital tank. This gives the best chance for both the fish and protects the plants

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If one fish is infected you need to treat the entire tank. You can go with this salt and heat method if the fish can tolerate it. Alternatively, many of the medications nowadays are quite good at defeating ich. A great resource is the Aquatic Support Community (give them a search on facebook). I highly recommend that community. If you want to take the meds route they can get you set up with everything you will need.

      Once the protozoan is in the water column the aquarist best treat the whole aquarium. Because there are various lifecycles of the protozoan at various stages. In some stages it is easy to eradicate but there are stages when the protozoan is completely immune against even the most aggressive methods.

    I have a betta, it's in a very small tank not even a gallon. I think It has ich can I treat him in that without filter and bubbler. I have a ten gallon and filter but it's not cycled or set up. what should I do

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Kat. A 10 gallon would be much better suited (and probably better suited for a betta anyway). You can use material from the current small tank to instantly cycle the 10g. If you are going to boost the temperature you will need an airstone because warmer water can't hold as much dissolved oxygen.
      Advancements in medications have made them an excellent option and are more effective than the salt and heat method. Look at your local fish store or pet shop for ich medications. Treating early will help increase the odds of survival.

    • @AlabamaWorley718
      @AlabamaWorley718 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AquaStudent I put him in the ten gallon with a air stone bubbler and heater. The temperature right now is 78 degrees. • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting. Gold dust sounds more like velvet to me. Take a look at that and see if that's helpful. Hopefully there really wasn't an issue. Those are the good things to be mistaken on. Best of luck! I bet the betta is much happier in the warm 10g tank.

    • @AlabamaWorley718
      @AlabamaWorley718 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AquaStudent he is much happier. But I'm a little concerned about him being in their and not having the tank cycled. How much water and how often should I change his water. I need to buy a Api water test kit.

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A water test kit will help you keep close tabs on it. If your previous tank was already established and you used media or decorations from it you can jumpstart the cycle in the new tank. You'll already have the bacteria required to complete the nitrogen cycle.
      Water change regiments depend on the stocking level, amount/frequency of feeding, and whether or not you're growing live plants. About 20% weekly is a pretty good number to start with and you can go from there.

  • @Agr414

      +Agr414 I don't have any data on that. I know most fish can tolerate cooler temperatures better than warm ones. The biggest concern in adjusting tank parameters are huge gradients. Quick changes cause problems. I lowered mine back down to normal over a day and a half or so.

    • @AquaStudent
      @AquaStudent  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm surprised you're able to see them. Without a host the ich parasite will die. However, I often complete partial water changes. It's nice to run a gravel vacuum along the sand/gravel to pick up anything which has fallen off. It can't hurt if it's not in the tank.
      Refill with water containing the targeted amount of salt.
      Be sure to let anything you put into the tank completely dry (or clean it thoroughly) before using it on another tank to prevent spreading the disease.
