Has anyone else noticed when you’re playing the game in Zanarkand before you fight Yunalesca, theres counts to a beat and in the game this hymn starts OFF BEAT on purpose (versus the other one that starts on time) and when I realized this it gave me fucking chills! So yes I love this version cuz it’s haunting 💖
Oh wow. I was only thinking that it was a choir of people singing together trying to harmonize and not doing the best job of it, being only flawed humans. I didn't actually think about that but it makes sense.
It's in one key. The trio of voices are creating a quartal harmony. Listen to Stravinsky's Mass (namely the Credo, and Kyrie) for the inspiration for the harmonic style in this piece.

I should add that the reason I worded it “3 or 4 keys at once” is for folks who might not be as knowledgeable about music theory, even if it is a somewhat simplistic way to talk about something more complex. Having said that, as I understand it, the basic hymn melody is in Dorian mode, and the two upper voices here are in d-dorian and a-dorian, respectively, just layered on top of each other. The bottom voice is a little tricky, however, since it doesn’t quite end up with the expected g-dorian transposition, and then at the last two phrases (hasatekanae, kutamae), Uematsu decides to make things even more crunchy. If you could identify what’s going on at that point, I think that would be nice because beyond just a chord cluster, I’m stumped at what’s going on there.

Yunalesca’s beliefs in what she believes is right for all of Spira and her people is wrong, and Yuna and her entourage of guardians knows this adamant fact of life to be true as she begins to resist and fight back (with tidus’ help from his beliefs of course and everyone else’s encouragement and support) to the point where it’s Yunalesca who permanently bites the dust as one of the bad guys. But despite all this, you can’t help but get the kind of hauntingly beautiful vibe given off by all the hymn singers in the background who all collectively became the final aeon themselves

After beating them (basically wiping them out of existence...), they took this hymn and used it in their religion. Even their 'prayer form' is literally the sign of victory from their Blitzball sport. Which is also Zanarkandian...
The hymn isn't religious in nature. It was a song composed and sung by the people of Zanakand in defiance of Bevelle's military ambitions against their city state. What religious associations there is to this song is superficial. It is the style in which it is sung which evokes the style of religious musical traditions of our world such as the sound of Buddhist monks chanting sutras or Christian monks singing in Gregorian chant. The latter makes use of complex tonal ranges and polyphony to create a deep and uplifting heavenly feel to the song they render.
I don't think the singer's a specific person unlike with the other Hymns. Rather, they picked deep male voices to make it sound more foreboding than all the other Hymns so far, to hit that this place is...off, in a way. Contrast with the far more harmonious Spira Hymn.

The world in FFX is beautiful and heavenly, by far my favorite FF setting!
In my opinion FFX isn't just the best FF game but the best video game of all time IMO.

Exactly, especially at the last part which sounds just off-key enough to be unsettling.
It’s meant to be unsettling, played at a time when the characters have their faith completely shaken.
It is the sinister reveal of the Yevon religion and Yunalesca's revelations. This part was the most shocking in the game to me.
