You don't hear a lot of orchestral covers in which the original theme is so clearly present, but infinitely stronger because of the real instruments. Absolutely well done! ❤
Hearing DK64 music fully realized with actual instruments desperately makes me wish we could get a remake/remaster of DK64. Because I feel like a lot of issues with that game could be easily fixed with some modern QOL additions. Or at least another attempt at a fully 3D DK game in general.
gods how amazing that would be. i've all but given up hope for it myself, but if they did.... oh man they'd have me money in an instant even if they made it cost 200 bucks. i'd hate myself for giving into that kind of corporate cash grab but i'd still do it
This is perfect and this is coming from a very picky-when-it-comes-to-covers person. I would gladly have the whole DK64 soundtrack from you (and your buds)
I love how when you play Fungi Forest the tone of the music changes when you change the atmosphere whether you change it from day to night or night to day.
Holy crap those horns!!! The strings section is on point too! And the clarinet! This sounds amazing Nico. Really great mixing. This is kind of mind blowing.
This was my most fave board on the entire game, but I remember also being terrified once you turned the board into night-time. Watching things that were previously non moving come to life, I hated having to navigate through that😂😂😂
This is what the Day music sounded like to me when I was a kid. So lively and deep... It's like listening to it for the first time again. Thank you and your fellow co-musicians for this. It really brings out a memory that was deep in my soul. And also that transition from Day to Night was seamless and awesome.
This sounds soooo magical. So many beautiful textures!! And that transition from the day to night version was sooo seemless. 10/10. Great arranging and mixing Nico! 👏 Makes me wanna arrange a VGM with mallets involved
Yoo thanks my dude! I'm glad the transition was smooth, I almost gotta give Grant credit for that one lol. I'd love to throw some real mallets your way sometime
this is like, obscenely pretty. Stupid me didn't read the title and had a bit of a hype moment when the night theme started too haha, glad you included that. Loved the tones and textures from this 3 person powerhouse orchestra!
Thanks so much! This tune is so beloved and Grant himself was brought to a tear when he saw it 🥲 so glad you enjoyed it and the fact I exceeded your expectations with the night theme haha!
I have to say that: one of the greatest covers I've seen in my life. The job that you guys have done in it, is almost perfect. I have no words to describe. Just amazing!!!!!! Greetings from Brazil!!! ❤
I recognize the sound effects at night time as being the same ones used by Dives for the Left 4 Dead 2 custom campaigns "Journey to Splash Mountain" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Zombies" for the area outside the Indiana Jones ride/Adventureland.
I come back to this arrangement more and more. I feel you absolutely nailed the recording timbre. I don't know if it was happy accident or not on your part but the way how everything's recorded and played nearly perfectly reflects the sound of the original track and how those original samples sounded (and how they felt emotionally) while all of this still nearly being fully live. I love those French Horns for example. that close, vintage sound is in this context an chefs kiss. Same can be said with all the winds and the rest ♥
Agreed!! I feel like the first thing to come to mind for a "remaster" of this track is to fully, richly orchestrate it, maybe with some expensive chamber samples or even a live symphony orchestra. And those would sound lovely if done well. But this mostly-acoustic, smaller-scale cover performed at this proficient level captures both the grandiose glory of Fungi Forest and beautiful, nostalgic simplicity of enjoying it. So covering it like this brings a sort of unique charm (and nostalgic faithfulness) that a full-blown orchestration or piano cover could never match. tl;dr: this is very goldilocks of you nico
It's like going camping in the woods for a whole week: daylight full of fun, while at nighttime it gets quite scary. P.S: The wolf howls and the owl hoots are missing for background sounds
Wow!!! No sé por qué no tuve la oportunidad de ver este video antes, pero sin duda es una una gran interpretación de Fungi Forest, me trae tantos recuerdos de la infancia ✨ Me encanta tu contenido!!!
This is so beautiful! Grant Kirkhope was one of my faves and you took it to the next level, love the collab and the layers and how the atmosphere really shows in this one!
I'm doing a 365 days of music challenge, and I picked this one for today's! I thought you might be interested in seeing what I wrote about it, so here it is: **Day 133:** "Fungi Forest - Day/Night" - th-cam.com/video/rPEL1Jq5UEM/w-d-xo.html This is an incredibly accurate rendition of a stellar Nintendo 64 track. It's one of my very favorite music tracks in all of gaming from one of my very favorite levels in all of gaming from one of my very favorite games (in all of gaming). Nico Mendoza, JD Winds, and Nathan Banegas did a fantastic job with these live instruments. I also commend the use of natural ambience sfx; you could hear a lot of those kinds of sounds in the original DK64 track. One of the commenters on this video, Linus Olsson Music (whose works I also enjoy...small world!) remarked how similar the instrumentation sounds to the original. I firmly agree! The track doesn't necessarily try to become something bigger or lesser than the original. it just glows it up and makes it come even more alive. What I love about Fungi Forest is...well, I love a lot of things about Fungi Forest. I love the mushroomy, foresty aesthetic. I love how *huge* it is -- bigger than most Super Mario Odyssey levels, and this was released almost 20 years prior! I love how well all the space is used -- Fungi Forest isn't some grassy desert. I love how much there is to it with all the different rooms and the day/night mechanic (though I much prefer day). And I love how the world is so organized: a central hub and branching tunnels, one leading to a place with barns and sheds and such, another leading to a massive garden with evil tomatoes and a helpless worm that lives in a giant apple, yet another leading to a huge mushroom tower you can scale...and there's one more around that mushroom tower that leads you to a beautiful autumn forest that reeks of this storybook, PC-game, Disney energy. I love it! And the music wonderfully captures its grandness, its forestness, its...mushroomyness. It's just...wow! Kudos to Grant Kirkhope for composing it, and kudos to Mendoza and friends for crafting this beautiful rendition. ______________________________________________ All that to say...I LOVE THIS ARRANGEMENT. It was such a pleasure to listen to. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Subscribing!
Love all of this! Fungi Forest is such a good level with great design and music. Rare at the time truly had the dream team making a level this great. Glad to see people passionate about this game in 2022 🥺
This cover is now available on streaming services! song.link/s/3Oy1yriV6YokJO1uc1s077
If Donkey Kong 64 was ever remade, I’d imagine the music to sound like this. This is as good as the official song.
I’m dying for them to remake it for years and the super Mario movie gave me hope since they are Lowkey building donkey Kong land in universal parks
You don't hear a lot of orchestral covers in which the original theme is so clearly present, but infinitely stronger because of the real instruments. Absolutely well done! ❤
The production on this is just perfect.
Thanks so much!
when 4:23 started that really hit me 🥲this is probably one of my favorite soundtracks on a game of all times

This is by far the best cover for this song. It's my fave song from DK64 so thank you for doing the soundtrack justice
Thanks! It's such a great tune
My 100% favorite soundtrack of all time, done perfectly.

Yep, indeed, it'd be awesome to have cover all DK songs
I love how when you play Fungi Forest the tone of the music changes when you change the atmosphere whether you change it from day to night or night to day.
Best music in the entire game. So beautiful. Perfection
God-Tier!!! I dare say this is better than the original. Real live instruments add so much. Goosebumps.... Great job!
The game with unmatched level themes and atmosphere. Thank you for these!
You're welcome! I really cherish this OST
This is how a remake should sounds like ❤
My memories of this song are so clear. Definitely a trip.
Makes me want to come back to the game myself! Such a good OST
I love DK64! This is truly incredible. I hope Grant Kirkhope sees its

When the French horns come in 🤯 excellent work. Breathes so much more life into this great arrangement
Thanks so much!
This song is massively nostalgic. I wish people did more covers of DK64 music. Well done!
Thanks! Definitely gonna do more

Thanks so much! That thing is such a monster to play, backwards especially 😂
Nice Job Nico! The transition between the two versions was seamless
Thanks Linus, I'm glad because it was a HARD cut from the daytime variation to the nighttime one LOL
I once heard that this level was supposed to be in Banjo-Kazooie, but due to time constraints, it was omitted and used in Donkey Kong 64 instead.
Yeah! There's an old version called "advent" out there that would've been in BK
