Why America Should Watch the CFL

  • Is it time America stops trying to create their own spring football league and starts watching the one across the border? I think so. After all, despite some rule differences (some of which are actually clear improvements), the CFL is an established league.
    This video describes my take on the CFL and if NFL fans should spend their offseason watching it.

    I grew up in Texas a place where you could say takes its football rather serious from pee wee to pro. I love the sport and played for 12 years from Jr High to college. Being a very devout Steeler fan the NFL was always the way to go for me and I still love it. However I agree with points made in the video and have been a Sask. Riders fan since the 80's as I began watching the CFL on cable. I love the pace of the game and the differences are what makes the CFL more exciting in many ways compared to the NFL. Anyway you may not get the 120 million dollar players but that also adds to the game as many of the players have regular off season jobs. The love of the game and many of the Grey Cups have been more exciting and down to the wire compared to blowout or boring Super Bowls in the past. So a football loving transplanted Texan loves the CFL game, enough said. Have a great day and God bless Canada.

    I became interested in the CFL in 1979, due to the influence and popularity of a quarterback that hardly anyone here in the States knows. Lions in 1987. He has been enshrined in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and is still beloved to this day.

    Thanks for making this video. Im a big CFL fan as i am Canadian, and ive never been into the NFL as it has always seemed slower as you mentioned. As you watch and learn more about the CFL i think youll find the game is typically more exciting due to a few things.
    1: i'd say more scoring happens (at least during the summer months) its not un common for teams to put up 25-40 points against each other
    2: no lead is safe; this has been a theme in the cfl for decades and was a slogan a few years back. The CFL allows for any team to win at any time and it seems like a team can rally an exciting come back at any point. I have stopped watching games countless times when a team has gone up 3 or more TD's only to find out the next day that the losing team came back and won
    3: as you mentioned, fewer downs, more throwing, more big plays, more scoring, more excitement.

      There isn't more scoring in the CFL. The top team in the CFL averaged 30 points a game, the NFL had 2 teams that averaged more.
      No lead is safe in any football game. Teams make huge comebacks in the NFL all the time. Teams make big comebacks in NCAA and high school football too. That's a big part of football's appeal.
      And there certainly isn't more throwing or big plays in the CFL. The NFL has become a passing league over the last 15 years. Have you not noticed NFL passing records are being broken constantly?
      If you like the CFL great, but it's a minor league with minor league players. Comparing it to the NFL is absurd.

      Quincy Longman you’re absolutely right. Don’t get me wrong, I love the NFL and College ball in the states, but in terms of comeback games in the CFL, that’s one of the main reasons why I love watching the games. Case in point just last month The Argos were down by thirty points I believe in the first half against The Bombers, and came back to win there first win of the season. The crowds in those teams hometowns are definitely as dedicated as any other franchise team in the states, if not more so. I love the CFL

    • @Rindiculousfun
      @Rindiculousfun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jason Allen Now while it’s true that comebacks can happen in the NFL, the rules in the CFL are specifically tailored so that you cannot grind down the clock. There is stoppage time in the last 3 minutes. So just think in the NFL if you hit the two minute warning and have the ball and the other team has no timeouts you have already won. In the cfl with the same situation if you don’t get a first town a team will get the ball back with over a minute remaining and it only takes about a minute to be able to drive the entire field. Also there is more scoring in the CFL. 9-6 games are unheard of in the CFL while they’re pretty common in the NFL. Just because there’s more parity in the CFL is the reason why there are two teams in the NFL who score more points per game

      When people say "minor league" they don't mean it's a D league for the NFL (although in the past the NFL has had deals with the CFL for access to players), they mean it's level of play, caliber of players etc is far below NFL standards.
      The CFL is a minor league, comparable to the AAFL as far as player quality goes. Nobody who is playing in the CFL is doing it because they chose it over the NFL. I think the average salary in the CFL is around $100,000 (not sure if that's Canadian dollars or American) while the average salary in the NFL is something like $600,000.
      Min CFL salary is something like $55,000 while min in the NFL is close to $500,000.
      So any player that CAN play in the NFL is going to choose to play in the NFL over the CFL.
      "Minor league" doesn't necessarily mean "developmental league", it just means it's not a league with top talent.
      People forget the CFL tried to expand to the USA and it bombed horribly.

A couple of 2- and puts...easily achievable with the parity you find in the CFL and how quick the D's are...if you get the ball back 2 or three times in the final 2 minutes, you've got a great shot at winning. 60 minute football!! WRT the comments below: I'm a big fan of both leagues and all I can say is that you really can't compare them. NFL and CFL are just different games and what makes a great NFL or NCAA player does not necessarily make a good CFL player (and vice versa) as has been proven over and over. I always role my eyes when I hear of NCAA stars or NFL cuts heading north to reek havoc here (enter Ricky Williams, Vince Young, Trent Richardson, Johnny M, etc. etc. ) as this rarely happens with Doug Flutie and Warren Moom being exceptions. The CFL is a very different game and requires a different type of athlete - doesn't mean it is inferior.

It has some aspects that make it more interesting to watch, including mutiple men in motion, and the threat of an "onside Punt". You have to be ready for anything. Also there are 12 players a side. You too need to reread your CFL history. Bud Grant played and coached the Blue Bombers, he never played for the Eskimos.

    • @teto85
      @teto85 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are correct. Grant also played for the Minneapolis Lakers 1949 to 1951 and then the Eagles. The Eagles did not want to give him a raise and he became the first NFL player to play out his option and then he went to Winnipeg to play and then coach. He is the first ( and I think only) Coach to be elected to the Hall of Fame in BOTH leagues and so far the only coach to lead teams to the Grey Cup (4-2) and Superb Owl (0-4). And he is still hunting and fishing at 91. Not bad for a skinny kid who is a polio survivor. My cousin and her wife were in Winnipeg for a CFL game between the Riders and the Blue Bombers in 2015 or 2016 and they have photos of the Bud Grant statue at Investor Field. Bud is great and I apologize for my previous inaccurate history. The say it's still there this year. Thanks for setting me straight.

    Looks like you should've picked Winnipeg after all (at least you didn't become a Riders fan... _shudders_ )! I don't really follow the NFL, but I wonder if the 2019 Bombers are more like your Vikings or whatever, because they actually WERE a "run-first" type of team, relying heavily on two players to gain yards on the rush: RB Andrew Harris (who rushed for a league-leading 1380 yards, almost 300 more than the guy in 2nd place, who played 2 more games than Harris)...as well as QB Chris Streveler, who LOVES to keep the ball and run with it (he was the #1 rushing QB, and 6th in rushing yards in the league with 726 in 15 games played, though some of that was him functioning as a RB with Nichols as QB). Their passing yards on the year was dead last in the CFL at 212 per game, but they got to the playoffs on the strength of their rushing (#1 in the league), and won the Cup due to the exceptional rushing, to QB Zach Collaros, who fit seamlessly in with a solid WR corps (until his season-ending injury, QB Matt Nichols was dominant, and he had a really talented group of guys to throw to...there's no way the Bombers would have been last in the league in passing yards if Nichols had played the whole season), and of course to the determination of their defense, which (iirc) forced FOUR 3rd-and-inches turnovers in their last 2 playoff games (including a successful goal-line stand vs. the Riders).
    The path the Bombers took to the title was highly improbable, worthy of one of those feel-good Hollywood sports movies where the underdogs triumph on a field of glory. They might have finished higher in the standings (they were 3rd in the West this year) if Nichols hadn't been injured, but then the pressure would've been on them from the very first playoff game (which would have been at home instead of in Calgary). As it was, all of the pressure landed on Calgary, Saskatchewan and Hamilton, since these teams were, at least during the regular season, better than Winnipeg (both based on the overall standings, and in the case of the Riders and Ti-Cats, head-to-head). Plus, trading for a talented, yet underestimated QB in Zach Collaros (a man many had written off for the season - a few analysts even thought his CFL career was OVER), at the trade deadline gave them the firepower to compete while keeping it under-the-radar (since nobody knew if Collaros would be any good after his concussion earlier in the year...spoiler alert: he was!). And it all STILL relied on a hefty dose of luck...if the Riders hadn't made a *_critical_* error in the Western Final, they may very well have won: Instead of their QB keeping the ball on a sneak to turn a 2nd-and-1 situation into a 1st-and-goal one, the QB (3rd-string at that, subbed into the game for this one play) pulled the ball back from the line of scrimmage and into the pocket, obviously intending to pass the football into the endzone for the TD. But he got sacked by an alert Bomber defense, and the 2nd-and-1 became 3rd-and-long, forcing them to settle for the field goal. Had they gotten the TD (either with their initial plan had it succeeded, or with the more conventional manner they should have attempted, i.e. getting a new set of downs to work with), they would have been within a field goal of tying the game in the last couple minutes of the game, allowing them to take it into overtime (or even win it in regulation).
    29 years is a long time, but I remember the last time my Bombers won the Cup...I was 9 when they dominated the Eskimos for their 10th title. Two days ago they dominated the Ti-Cats for #11. What a year...!

      You don't get a point for missing a field goal. The kicking team gets a point if the receiving team does not advance the ball out of the end zone on a kick, any kick including a field goal attempt. There are not fair catches, touchbacks or kicking teams grounding their own kick.

      Some ppl have wanted single points removed from the game. I'm not one of then. I don't think ppl understand how those points alter the game in good way. The single can determine field position,a coaches play decisions. Leads can go back and forth without games ever being tied during play. And if goal posts ever went back behind the end zone,there would be no point in watching anymore lol.

I like the 3 down rule, I like how there is no touchbacks or fair catches. Also part of me feels like a CFL kicker can most often times kick further than an NFL Kicker. you see more 50-yard field goals in the CFL more than the NFL. We may not have a Tom Brady or a Drew Brees. But some of our QBs are really good. Rickey Ray to me feels like a CFL version of Payton Manning. I like both Leagues but CFL to me is my favourite.

    As a Canadian living near the border. I have been a fan of both leagues. One is not better than the other, they are two different types of the same game. The CFL is an older league than the NFL. The NFL has bigger crowds and is watched all over the world. It is like comparing Rugby League to Rugby Union. The CFL is a faster paced game like Rugby league, and the NFL is more like Rugby union a more power based game. There is far more change of possession in the CFL than the NFL. There are more big running plays in the NFL than the CFL, as there is more emphasis on passing in the CFL. There is usually more games that come right down to the wire in the CFL than in the NFL. Also, because of the longer and wider field you get more kick returns for touchdowns than the NFL. Because of the extra down in the NFL, you get a more balanced play and longer possession times. There is a lot more punting in the CFL. I have been to many Buffalo Bills home games over the years as well as Hamilton Tiger Cats games. I have enjoyed both leagues over the years, and have seen many great games on both sides of the border.
