When I was in high school, in the early 1970s, in Michigan public schools, we all had to learn to swim, and do synchronized swimming. The schools had Olympic sized swimming pools. (Most, not all) It was part of gym class back then. We all had to do routines and were graded on that. It's SO much fun, and also demanding, but helps people learn body control in the water. These folks are at the highest levels of course....just wow.

@@cwayzums If you're talking about individuals who dance on pointe, some can't well. I used to dance on pointe (I absolutely loved it) but it was a terror for my feet. I have fallen arches (a firm of flat feet that looks fine when I stand, but they roll in as I walk) that is predominant in the sport. I have to used arched insoles as a result and "ballet flats" (the style of dress shoe)? Forget about it!
For this sport (synchronized swimming/artistic swimming) though, there is a way to work on strengthening your arches. There's elastic bands you pull tight and then point into. Also the oldest trick I was told was to take a dictionary and stand on top of it with my heel resting on the floor and lift into a parallel releve.

This is not quite the same as ice skating. While there are some synchronized movements, there are just as many movements that are peculiar to each to each of the partners based on fluidity, strength and flexibility. I have never seen a female ice skater lift a male above her head. This obsession with a single gender or gender blending is becoming a little bit annoying. Not only do females not resemble males physically but they are different biologically.

I didn’t realize this sport was around in the Olympics for this long. But then again there are many other events I never knew existed in the summer Olympics.
I always thought they only had swimming, gymnastics, and track & field in the summer Olympics.

These men are all muscle, no fat. They probably sink like bricks. Yet that man looks weightless in the water. That’s how good he is.

I think the argument over whether something should be an Olympic sport shouldn’t be the definition of what a sport is but rather whether or not the sport in question is as close to subjectively judged as possible.
