    At first glance Reverse Osmosis drinking water systems can appear somewhat complex. It helps if you know how they work, so I suggest you view my How a Reverse Osmosis drinking water system works video before watching this one on troubleshooting.
    One of the most common concerns is very little or no water flow from the drinking water faucet, but when you check, the tank is full, which you can tell by how heavy it is. The usual cause is the tank is low on air pressure or has a torn bladder.
    To remedy this situation, follow these suggestions:
    Discount Pricing on Reverse Osmosis here thewaterfiltere...
    1) Turn off the water flow from the source, shut off the tank and disconnect and remove the tank, I usually take it outside at this point.
    2) Find the blue or black plastic cap on the bottom or side of the tank and open it to expose the metal air stem valve. If there is water leaking out of this valve or air is coming out of the shut off, the bladder is torn and the tank needs to be replaced.
    3) You need to check the pressure within the tank when it is empty, so open the valve and let the water run until it is empty. If it does not empty fully, connect a tire pump or compressor to push out all of the water before proceeding.
    4) Using a low range tire pressure gauge, check the pressure inside the tank, it should be between 6-8 psi, likely it will read 0 at this point. Discount Pricing and FREE Shipping on low pressure guages thewaterfilter...
    5) Carefully re pressurize the tank with a bicycle tire pump or compressor to whatever it says on the tank or if nothing is noted on the tank to 6-8 psi. Do not over pressurize as you may burst the bladder!
    6) Reconnect the tank and allow the tank to refill and you'll be fine. If you find the tank needs to be constantly re pressurized it is time for a new tank! Discount Pricing and FREE Shipping on RO tanks thewaterfilter...

    I've had my system for several years and just recently the system would bring my flow to a stop after 6 or 7 oz. After watching this video I was able to drain tank and bring the PSI to 6.5 and life is all good. I was thinking about buying a new system, thanks for saving me a few bucks.

    Thank you so much for this video! I was nervous about changing the filters and the membrane on my RO system. Following the directions for start-up and waiting 6 hours to test the system, I was so disappointed with the flow of water. I got a neighbour handyman to check out my work and he approved my work. I told him it was probably the tank and this morning I followed the steps in the video and all is working perfectly with my system. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

    Hi Gary, great video, thank you. I have a few questions though: If the tank bladder isn't leaking, then how does it lose pressure? What will the tank pressure be when the tank if full? How often should I check the tank pressure? Thanks, Rick

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      It very slowly loses pressure over many years of use. Full pressure depends on your water supply pressure. You only need to check the tank when you have very little flow and the tank is full

    My Amtrol RO4 just failed after 19 years. Poor pressure at the faucet led to me determining water leaking from the schraeder valve while trying to take pressure readings. The water leaking from the schaeder valve is due to a ruptured internal rubber bladder which, in a properly functioning tank, separates the water at the top of the tank from the pressurized air chamber at the bottom of the tank (where the schraeder valve is).

    Hi Gary. What you describe here sounds like our problem. We attempted to follow all of your steps. We got as far as opening the tank and letting out some of the water. When we then tried to use both a bicycle pump and a compressor to pump out the rest of the water, nothing happens. No water comes out when we use either device. It seems that the air is not getting in. The tank is still heavy so it seems there is still water in there. Any ideas what is going wrong?

    Gary, I successfully empied my tank and hooked it back up again and it is running fine. Thankyou for the good instructions. But, while I was emptying the tank the water stopped coming out about half way empty. I had to insert a stick into the air valve to empty the rest of the water as well as alot of the air. The water came out brownish. Is that because it has rusted inside? Do I need to replace the tank? Now that it is up and running there is no sign of discoloration or off taste. What do you think?

    Thank you Gary the water guy, very helpful. My symptom is very slow flow at the faucet. The storage tank is full. When I push on the Schrader valve water comes spewing out of the Schrader valve. Does that mean that the bladder is broken? I did remove the tank after that and tried to remove the water. It would not come out by gravity. When I applied air pressure with a bicycle pump to the tank it probably pushed out two thirds of the water and the rest I cannot get out. Would you agree that the bladder is probably broken? The tank is a whirlpool unit and I've probably had it at least five years. Thanks.

    Here you go, lessons I learned the hard way (my ASO value would not operate correctly):
    1) Make SURE you understand the IN & OUT ports and hook up the lines correctly to ASO valve.
    2) Use ONLY hard lines to interconnect (dont use clear lines from home depot, they are too soft and value wont shutoff correctly).
    3) Keep all hard tube lengths to ASO value as short as possible.
    4) On all connections make sure the tubes push all the way down
    5) On all post carbon filters, post filters, etc...dont plug directly into these filters, first always use a push in connector then push your tube into those connectors.
    I did all above and fixed my ASO value RO system operation.

Checked the water going into it and it's drops and not a flow or stream of water. What is the normal flow into the tank coming from the system? we just changed all filter, so they're all brand new. Followed your instructions and it seems that the Shutoff valve is not good as the drain water never stops when tank is shutoff and main water is on. Would that effect the membrane from functioning right? Shouldn't the tank be filling anyway? Would this happen if the new membrane is defected or clogged. FYI: With new membrane removed, and no membrane installed, the tank fills out good. Is the water drinkable without the membrane? I do have the other two installed (carbon and post polishing). Thanks!

    One "Key" point everyone fails to mention, is to replace the schrader valve first, as those bicycle valve inerds tend to fail some times, and replacing the entire tank due to the valve failing is wasteful.
    I actually watched a video where the guy replaced his bladder tank, and decided to cut the old one open to see where it was leaking, and there were no leaks or decrease in pressure from the bladder due to the valve being faulty.
    Also, if the tank is losing pressure, and you suspect the bladder, there should in fact be Water being expelled from the schrader valve (meaning that there is water bellow the bladder where it should NOT be (at this point you can most assuredly say the bladder is damaged, but if there is no water coming out of the schrader valve, replace the valve first (any bicycle shop will have a spare valve inner for you at a cost of a few cents))
    Great video otherwise, concise and to the point 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      Yes, definitely if the schrader valve is the problem I would replace it before giving up on the tank.

    I am confused. If you use the Schrader valve to pump up the bladder inside to get the water out, won't the air remain in there or you have a change to burst the bladder? You go on then say check the air pressure with the same valve. I guess this is a bit confusing to me.

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you want the air to remain in there to push out the water. When the tank is empty you check the air pressure to make sure you adjust it to get 7 psi with the tank empty.

    Thank You Mr. Gary (the water guy). I have a culligan RO under the sink filtration system. The faucet fractured and broke off. The replacement is very expensive. I wanted to know if the quick release system that it came with could be negotiated around. The tube is pushed into the connectors. The current tubing girth is about an inch which brings greater pressure through the faucet. All other faucets have connections that require small girths of tubing and the quick release valves that come along with the faucets can not take the pressures, thereby, causing leaks. Thanks again. Enrique.

I checked pressure with 0-25 psi gauge--0 psi,. I opened the ball valve on top of the tank and attempted to use pump again--only to hear air escaping from ball valve. That tells me that the bladder is ripped--do you agree?
