Been in the water business full time for three weeks now. RO's are the most complicated water treatment to learn about. Also the most difficult to work on. Just like anything the best way to learn is to go hands-on. I've noticed there's more differences in models than just the membrane sometimes. Like the new model we install has an "absolute" filter. And the order is sediment, pre-carbon, membrane, absolute, and post-carbon (polishing). As I understand the absolute we use is just to take out one or two nasty things that the rest of the system isn't certified to take out. That's a pretty self-explanatory benefit if the absolute is preventing something nothing else will. So is the benefit of having dual pre-carbon filters that they don't have to be changed as often? Even if so that doesn't change the frequency of change on sediment. If you wanted the best of both worlds I suppose you could put another carbon filter in where the sediment usually goes and put a separate pre-filter for sediment before the whole unit. Perhaps that's what you would do if you were putting an RO in a house with hard, chlorinated city water and they weren't going to buy a softener and backwashing carbon filter? I'm really geeking out on this stuff. This will be my long-term career for sure.
The two carbon filters are for capacity but also contact time. An extra sediment filter will not remove hardness. If customer has hard water with out a softener (within reason) they would just need to replace the membrane more often but it would still work.
A question about this filter system that was described. Many carbon filters call for a 5 minute rinse after replacement I didn’t notice that you had a rinse step in the replacement video, should that be done to avoid membrane contamination? Also I was suprised to learn a little while back that the holding tanks only required about 6 psi.
How does the water divide within the membrane? How does it know which is which? Is an ASO valve absolutely necessary for good production? My generic, 6 stage R/O system w/ 100 gpd membrane, did not come with an ASO valve or restricter other than a small piece of plastic with smaller diameter hole inserted into the 1/4" tube on outflow. However, my system seems to produce R/O water properly. Also, you may wish to balance your audio levels here.
Water is forced through under pressure. The low mineral context water goes through the high mineral content water does not. The ASO valve shuts off the water when the tank is full. Yes you have one version of the flow restrictor

You would need to add tanks to accumulate the water and then repressurize it to feed your system. Thsi video explains how a commercial system works. th-cam.com/video/SCANIla-NAU/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for your helpful videos! I am on well water and am researching RO systems. I already have a sediment filter, carbon filter, and UV light for my whole house system, so it seems redundant to get an RO system with these filters again. Are there simpler systems for RO that skip the upfront filters?
No there really are not and you will find that in spite of those whole house filters the filters in the RO system itself still get quite dirty, so you need a 5 stage RO system.
I wouldn't recommend drinking well water even with big blue filters and a UV light. Is a softener being used to keep that UV light sleeve from getting calcium buildup? Remember, if the sleeve is coated with calcium/magnesium the UV light can't penetrate through the build up and effectively kill bacteria going through it.
I have a huge question. My mother bought a reverse osmosis filter (5 stage) that has no drain. She has no idea what an R.O. water system is. It's membrane canister (the 4th one) has no outlet for the waste water. It's membrane is actually a ceramic type filter. I am not sure if it is actually a reverse osmosis membrane. I am not even sure if it is actually a reverse osmosis water system now after watching your video. What is itthen? Just a 5 stage water filter? I am afraid that my mother has been scammed by shady individuals.
This video helped me a lot. Especially showing the flow of the water as it goes through the system. I figured out that I had the tank hose and faucet hose backwards on the post-filter. Thanks for naming each part as well. Great presentation!
Gary, thank you for the information. I want to buy a RO water filter, but I need to get an over-the-counter unit because I am staying in a rental place for now. What system would you recommend?
Yes it definitely does remove Flouride. I am not a real fan of flouride in my drinking water either, since it's a bit odd when i think of the reason the government said they put it there in the first place. Like seriously? Do they all the sudden care a lot for our teeth? (More like they care more to control us by making us more docile). Anyways, My biggest concern why I'm thinking of switching to a reverse osmosis system from my "Brita Elite Advance" is to filter some of The Carcinogenic Nitrate/N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and Arsenic that's in the water we drink. But I'm still not sure about drinking RO water all the time, due to some studies about it working too good I guess 😅. Because RO can remove healthy minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and other bicarbonates, I would likely drink RO water it 70% of the time and not use it for cooking. Also I would likely have to take more supplements/vitamins (calcium, magnesium, and electrolytes) Now don't get me wrong, I think Reverse Osmosis is Great 👍 But just like everything, everything shoulc be used in moderation.
Great video. I have been a Plumber for 23 years have installed several but now that I do service work looking for good information. I was told RO systems filter as much as 8 times smaller than a white blood cell lol not sure about that but didn't know the submarine thing. Thanks for video
Very informative! Will my undersink RO still work even if I don't connect it to utility tap? I'm planning to install it somewhere far-flung without tap water.
What are your thoughts on the Zero waste water RO systems? I am looking at the AQUA flo H.E.R.O. system which would pipe the waste waster back into your water system before the softener and RO system.
Great question! Years ago when I researched this product I was told that their performance was very poor. Just now when I went to look it up, the links to the specs page and manual go nowhere. I would research this product very carefully before spending any money on it. I just changed all 3 filters in my whirlpool r.o. system and now find I need a new tank. If I purge and sanitize the new tank and system, will the clorox damage the new filters ??
I'm surprised to hear those systems were used on subs during WW11 . The destroyer I was on in the 60's was a Sumner Class ( WW11 ) . As a machinist mate in the aft engine room one of the watches I stood was on the evaporator turning sea water into fresh . Which was basically a small boiler fired by steam . Forward engine room had an even bigger one .
Maybe but something is wrong because once the tank is full and drain is quiet, I take a glass of water and drain noise goes on for 10min. It's only 2 months old and didn't used to run like this
H Gary, I have a BRS water RODI system with a pressurized water tank for my drinking water. My tank after filling up use to shut off my booster pump but since has not. I have a 3 stage RO system, and the pH doesn't change at all. Curious at to why? The EC drops from 300ppm to almost nothing 30ppm but the pH stay high, weird.
@@water_estore I figured it out, Low ionic strength solutions, like distilled, deionized and reverse osmosis water cannot be measured with pH pens or probes. The reading will be unreliable because the pH-sensitive glass needs lots of ions to provide an accurate and reproducible reading.
I live in an apartment. Not much space under my sunk. It's there a RO system that's small and compact that I can use ? Any recommendations ? Thank u !!
Great video my friend. 😊 Im doing a video of my friends home that has this type of system. Im gonna link this video to help people understand the system. 🙏
Thank you, Gary, for this very helpful explanation! I recently had an RO system installed and how it works was a mystery to me - especially how it works with only one hose to/from the tank. Your explanation made it very clear. The system I have is a little simpler. There are two carbon filters and the RO membrane is the middle of the three (not on top). But you explain the basics in straightforward terms I can apply to my system. Thanks again!
Hi Gary, I have a Pentair GRO 2550 R.O. system. Wish i had found your videos before I replaced the RO membrane. I screwed up when installing the "vent" (small white tube with red end) in the tube which connects to the red portal on the top of the membrane. The tube which contains the vent piece vibrates and the filter makes a lot of noise, even when it's just sitting and refilling the tank. Can I order just the vent piece?
It can if you are on an unchlorinated water supply without a UV disinfection system like this onewaterestore.com/products/hum-safe-water-10gpm-minirack-mr320e-tp2s-220
Hi Gary, great video! Would you still recommend this exact RO water system? Or, would you recommend another, newer one? I'm asking because this video is over 3 years old, so thought maybe a better one could possibly now be available. Thanks
Great question, basically the same system (same one I have in my house for my family) but now you can get it with a brushed nickel faucet here waterestore.com/products/hum-water-saver-75-gpd-reverse-osmosis-system-brushed-nickel-faucet
I want to add a RO system to clean the water to my refrigerator, but that wall only has a water source and no drain. If I ran the drain hose up the wall and tapped into a drain in the attic, would it push the water up 10 feet, or would it be better to install in the attic. Or I could put the ro under my kitchen sink, run the output into per, up the wall, over and down the wall of the refrigerator. This way the drain would drain into the sink drain??? Advice ?
The last filter is often referred to as a polishing filter. It cleans up any odor that may come from the water sitting in the tank. This sytem reduces the mnineral content by 90% so there are still minerals, just less. No it is great for daily use.
Hello sir.. one thing that confuse me is that this system needs a booster motor or not? Is there a pressure requirement for this system to work properly? Your feedback is highly appreciated ty
I inherited one of these systems in a house I just bought. Mine has a pump on it. What does this pump do? When I plug in the pump, it continues to run. Should it shut off on its own? And my tank is empty. How long will it take to fill up this tank?
The pump pushes water through the system, ours don't need a pump. The pump will shut off when the tank is full (well it should) It could take upm to 4 hours to fill the tank.
Thanks for the detailed info on how it works. I want to buy one but not sure which one I should choose. as you mentioned that the highly efficient memarine waste less water, but I am not sure how I should check for these types of system in store. what should I ask for? Do they understand if I say I need highly efficient system which waste less water, or do I need to use any technical term so that they can understand. Please suggest.
Wow. I love how you made that so easy to understand. I always thought they were so complicated. Is there a particular brand you subscribe too? I live in The Bahamas and are contemplating purchasing one for my family. I looked at a few, and are a weary of all the information and types.
Yes, this is the one in my house waterestore.com/products/hum-water-saver-reverse-osmosis-system-75-gallons-per-day. High efficiency, uses non proprietary filters, high flow and Made in USA
Will an RO help with manganese in the water supply? I know an RO needs higher pressure to work properly, we are on a well with 60psi. Would we need a booster pump, and can it be hooked directly up to the fridge instead of a faucet? your video is very informative. Thank you so much
Yes, it will remove manganese, 60 psi is plenty, if your TDS is higher than 1,000 ppm you will need a booster pump, yes, you can go straight to the fridge but how will you fill your coffee carafe? You would need a dedicated faucet at the kitchen sink.
Great video Gary, thank you, just a couple of questions though, how often do I need to change any of the filters, and secondly, in one of your other videos regarding bottled water, you said we should consider how long the water has spent in the bottle from when it is bottled to when it is drunk by the consumer, so is this the same with the "water tank for the RO system, with it being plastic is all I'm thinking? 👍
Filters need to be changed every 12 months. Yes, we want to minimize the contact time with water in any container but since you are using water from this every day or at least every month, there is no concern.
It takes about 1 1/2 hours depending on your water quality. It fills at the same rate as a standard efficiency system, just a whole lot less water going to the drain.
Hi sir, I have a confusion about how to use the drain water pipe in my water filter. Am I supposed to leave that pipe on at all times, or only turn it on when I'm filling the drinkable water tank, or turn it on after I've filled the tank and shut off the source water faucet ? If it's on when I'm filling the filter with water, much more water goes through the drain pipe than the amount of drinkable water which is getting filled in the tank. Which makes me feel like its just unnecessarily throwing out a lot of water and it's causing a lot of wastage. But when I turn the drain pipe on after the tank is full and I shut off the source water (kitchen faucet), the drain water flow barely goes for 3-4 seconds then turns off. So when am I supposed to leave it on ?
@@water_estore Thanks, I now understand that it's not normal for the drain line to flow continuously, I must say that the people who installed these filter in our homes don't really explain very well how to use the system properly.
I made a comment on your shorter how RO systems work video. This is much more in depth but on a chemistry level what is happening? Thinking back to science class I remember a semipermeable membrane allowing water to cross a membrane but crossing from clean water to salty water. So wouldn’t the dirty water attract the clean water? Also, how is the clean water kept separate from the dirty water inside the housing? Looking in the housing I just see two holes in the bottom. How does the ASO valve operate? I have one apart right now trying to troubleshoot it.
This is reverse osmosis, we use water pressure to force the water through the membrane, not osmosis where is equalizes on both sides of the membrane. The water that goes through the membrane goes to the tank through one exit and the water flushing the membrane goes to drain through a different exit. The ASO compares the water pressure before and after the membrane and when the pressure after reaches an acceptable pressure, telling the ASO that the tank is full it shuts off the flow. Typically is the ASO is problematic we repalce them with a new one here waterestore.com/products/reverse-osmosis-aso-asv-4000q

Great video, thanks for explaining the process of how it works! I use RO for watering house plants and in our humidifiers, but I wouldn't drink it on a regular basis (I'm lucky to live on a well that goes into a deep, clean aquifer).

I am not even sure if it is actually a reverse osmosis water system now after watching your video. What is itthen? Just a 5 stage water filter? I am afraid that my mother has been scammed by shady individuals.
Yup, it's just a 5 stage filter. No membrane, no drain, then it's not a reverse osmosis system.
Some people Called It ultrafiltration, is pretty usefull is the water that you home use is soft but with sediments.
the ceramic filter can be cleaned with a brush when it turns brown
Man I'm so grateful for this channel and all of its videos

I have never cared about this topic and don’t plan on buying an RO system but this video was interesting well done Gary!
Thanks for watching. Please share with friends and family!
Great overview of system operation. Very helpful for troubleshooting. Well done!
Thanks! Please share video with friends and family.
This video helped me a lot. Especially showing the flow of the water as it goes through the system. I figured out that I had the tank hose and faucet hose backwards on the post-filter. Thanks for naming each part as well. Great presentation!
Great to hear! Please share video with friends and family.
Gary, thank you for the information. I want to buy a RO water filter, but I need to get an over-the-counter unit because I am staying in a rental place for now. What system would you recommend?
Sorry, I have never used an over the counter system so I don't know.
Hello Gary does this removes Fluoride from the water as well? which is one of my main concerns at the moment
great question! Yes it does.
Because RO can remove healthy minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and other bicarbonates,
I would likely drink RO water it 70% of the time and not use it for cooking.
Also I would likely have to take more supplements/vitamins
(calcium, magnesium, and electrolytes)
Now don't get me wrong, I think Reverse Osmosis is Great 👍
But just like everything, everything shoulc be used in moderation.
Great video. I have been a Plumber for 23 years have installed several but now that I do service work looking for good information. I was told RO systems filter as much as 8 times smaller than a white blood cell lol not sure about that but didn't know the submarine thing. Thanks for video
Thanks for watching! Please share video with friends and family!
Very informative! Will my undersink RO still work even if I don't connect it to utility tap? I'm planning to install it somewhere far-flung without tap water.
Yes it will as long as there is a water supply.
@@water_estore The water supply will just come from a reservoir of rainwater, about 16 liters.
What an incredible explanation!
Glad you liked it! Please share video with friends and family!
You are far better of with our HUM Water Saver 75 which although there still is some wasted water, it is far less than the others. See video here th-cam.com/video/S17l3Tt6xS4/w-d-xo.html

Is this good for you to drink this type of water all the time?
I want to remove the chloride crap. But this removes all the minerals or most of them, so isn't that not the best?
Great question! This TH-cam video of mine will answer it for you th-cam.com/video/WJ6bRqiFIFM/w-d-xo.html
Pinch of baking soda and you’ll be good to go
Oh My god!! I finally found a great explanation of how this actually works. Thank you!!

Is kinectico worth the price difference to any other type of ROS?
No they are not. Also, check the price of their replacement filters, they are outrageous! You are far better off with one of these waterestore.ca/products/hum-water-saver-reverse-osmosis-system-75-gallons-per-day
I just changed all 3 filters in my whirlpool r.o. system and now find I need a new tank. If I purge and sanitize the new tank and system, will the clorox damage the new filters ??
Yes, they will. Just remove them while disnfecting.
Yes, that is what I learned many years ago.
WW11?
A Sumner class destroyer was the type built during the time period of WW 11@@DriveFastEatGrass
Hey! Can you kindly answer a question I have,
I'd like to know if the valve for the drain should be completely open? Or half way open?
I have never seen a valve on the drain line. A flow restrictor yes, but never a valve.
Thanks! About how much should it cost to install an RO system at a faucet?
Depends on a lot of variables. Drilling granite or quartz? Anywhere from $250 to over $600.
Great video. I have a question: mine is constantly running water to drain. Drained water stops when the tank is full or I turn off inlet cold water.
That is how they work, when filling the tank the impurities are being flushed to the drain, when the tank is full all water is shut off.
Maybe but something is wrong because once the tank is full and drain is quiet, I take a glass of water and drain noise goes on for 10min. It's only 2 months old and didn't used to run like this
Very informative, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Please share with friends and family.
H Gary, I have a BRS water RODI system with a pressurized water tank for my drinking water. My tank after filling up use to shut off my booster pump but since has not. The pressure on my gauge goes to about 80 or so. This began to happen recently after changing out all my filters and Membranes.... Any Ideas .
I would check the Automatic shut off valve. We have them here waterestore.com/products/reverse-osmosis-aso-asv-4000q

@@water_estore Can this take out chemicals such as Vinyl Chloride?

Should a UV light be added?
Great question, it will to some degree but if it is likely that your water has bacteria I would add one of these waterestore.com/products/luminor-glacier-4-9-lpm-uvc-led-system-guv-5s
I have a 3 stage RO system, and the pH doesn't change at all. Curious at to why? The EC drops from 300ppm to almost nothing 30ppm but the pH stay high, weird.
Might be a problem with your pH test?
@@water_estore I figured it out, Low ionic strength solutions, like distilled, deionized and reverse osmosis water cannot be measured with pH pens or probes. The reading will be unreliable because the pH-sensitive glass needs lots of ions to provide an accurate and reproducible reading.
Hi Gary, thanks for the video. Quick question, does the under sink RO system helps filter salt water as well?
Yes, but it depends on how much salt is in the water before it would clog the membrane.
I live in an apartment. Not much space under my sunk. It's there a RO system that's small and compact that I can use ? Any recommendations ? Thank u !!
They are all about the same size.
Great video my friend. 😊
Im doing a video of my friends home that has this type of system.
Im gonna link this video to help people understand the system. 🙏
Thank you Gary! Wish me luck, I'm goin' in!!

Thank you Gary! I always wondered why the tank was there and how it worked
Now you know. Please share video with friends and family.
6:55 hello there , can you explain to me how to set the waste valve to an optimum position please?
Not sure what you mean by the waste valve.
You are very welcome
Hi Gary, I have a Pentair GRO 2550 R.O. system. Wish i had found your videos before I replaced the RO membrane. I screwed up when installing the "vent" (small white tube with red end) in the tube which connects to the red portal on the top of the membrane. The tube which contains the vent piece vibrates and the filter makes a lot of noise, even when it's just sitting and refilling the tank. Can I order just the vent piece?
Sorry, not sure what you mean. Can you email a picture to info@waterestore.com
Does bacteria or residue grow in the tank or the tubes?

Advice ?
Under the sink is the better option.
Can we use the high mineral content water that flow into the drainage for watering plants?is it safe?
Probably not as usually it is high in salts.
Thanks
What is the benefit of adding a permate pump? Does it produce water faster?
I really don't know. I never use or recommend them, unnecessary cost and complexity.
This was very helpful. The history was interesting. Thanks.
Glad you liked it. Please share video with frineds and family.
does it matter if my T off of my finishing filter is a few inches away from the actual end of the filter?
No, not at all.
Hey. What does the fishing filter do? Also does this give water with no minerals at all? Is it bad for daily use?
The last filter is often referred to as a polishing filter. It cleans up any odor that may come from the water sitting in the tank. This sytem reduces the mnineral content by 90% so there are still minerals, just less. No it is great for daily use.
Great explanation. Thanks 👍

Hello sir.. one thing that confuse me is that this system needs a booster motor or not? Is there a pressure requirement for this system to work properly? Your feedback is highly appreciated ty
Booster pump is only need if your water has a TDS of 1500 ppm or higher. You need at least 25 psi for this to work.
Thanks for your informative video but could I use the RO system with out storage tank
Yes, but there would be such a pathetic slow stream of water you would hate it.
Thank you so much Gary 🙏🏻. Can I get more videos on industrial water purification videos.
Sure thing! We have our Commercial RO videos here th-cam.com/play/PLmnBltD77jBUUVlBSGEM-WmGgGAPC8-Au.html

I want to buy one but not sure which one I should choose. as you mentioned that the highly efficient memarine waste less water, but I am not sure how I should check for these types of system in store. what should I ask for? Hey pal so will this work with Pacific or Atlantic water
No, but great question. Sea water is beyond their 2,000 ppm limit.
What is the working pressure for the system? Can this system provide water for a dishwasher?
No it cannot. Just for a dedicated faucet or fridge or ice maker
Hey Gary, do you have any RO water systems that you personally use and/or would recommend?
@@water_estore I appreciate your reply, thank you 👍
Very informative and easy to understand video. Thanks :)

Do these RO systems get rid of iron and heavy metals aswell?
Yes they do.
Will this remove vinyl chloride and latex?
Great question! Yes, it will.
I just had my filters replaced so how long does it take to fill the storage tank back up?
Anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

How fast does it take to fill the tank shown? Does the HE fill the tank at thw same rate or is it slower?
It takes about 1 1/2 hours depending on your water quality. It fills at the same rate as a standard efficiency system, just a whole lot less water going to the drain.
@@water_estore thank you for your knowledge and your willingness to share it.
Always love learning something new. Thanks for the video Gary.

It stays on all the time. Once the tank is full it will shut off.
@@water_estore That's the thing, sir. Mine doesn't shut off after the filter is full, it just keeps going.
This video will help. th-cam.com/video/bO3irIVCFo0/w-d-xo.html
@@water_estore oh my gosh I’m an idiot! It says it right in the name! lol funny how someone can misunderstand something so easy and not realize it.

Glad it was helpful! Please share video with friends and family.
What if you get a bad clog and both sinks are full causing back pressure? Can the bad water with draino come back up the drain line and poison everyone drinking it?
I can't see how it could, the system uses water from your water supply for purification not from the drain.
Great video, thanks for explaining the process of how it works! I use RO for watering house plants and in our humidifiers, but I wouldn't drink it on a regular basis (I'm lucky to live on a well that goes into a deep, clean aquifer).

is it possible to make high quality reverse osmosis systems meant to sit on a countertop? if so, are there any brands or models you would recommend?
I don't know of any.
Is it possible for dirty water to backflow through from drain line? If yes, is there a solution? For example, a clog under the sink or after the drain line and the dirty water comes back to the sink.
You can put a check valve on the drain line to prevent that or an air gap like this one waterestore.ca/products/water-softener-air-gap-verneco-va2
