  • Watch a step by step tutorial on how to replace your five stage reverse osmosis water filters and membrane. Typically the bottom three filters need to be replaced every year and the top two filters can last anywhere from three to five years. Use your TDS water testing meter to get a better understanding of when to change your RO membrane.

    Here are my tips after I watched the video twice and replaced all 5 filters:
    1. Remove the system from the wall if mounted. Its much easier to replace if you don't have to squeeze in under the cabinet
    2. Have a towel and or bucket ready under the filter you're opening to catch the water
    3. Use the provided separate tool to remove the RO membrane twist cap. Its very tight. This separate tool is different then the tool used to unscrew the sediment and carbon pre-filters.
    4. Leave the system out when purging to check for leaks

    Got taught from someone who has been doing it for years. I'll tell you what he told me. After changing the first 3 filters disconnect the first pipe out the 3rd filter. Turn water back on and let fill 2 buckets with it. The water will be black from the carbon filter. If you skip this step all that black water goes through the romembrane. Your welcome

      Hello Customer,
      Thank you for that information and feedback. The membrane filter will also flush the carbon fines out the drain tubing so either way should be fine. Very good video. Thanks. I called Apec because I was concerned about holding the end of the membrane filter with my needle nose pliers, which are certainly NOT sanitized. He said that the outer blue layer on the membrane filter is the part that you want to be sure and not touch with your hands. He said the end fitting is ok to handle with pliers. I just swapped out all five filters, and everything went fine. No leaks. We really enjoy the taste of the RO filtered water, and feel that it is healthier as well.

    Long nose needle pliers will not remove the RO membrane from the plastic housing on my 3-stage filter unit. It takes a brute force manual pull method of steel wire attached to the membrane handle, and the other end to an outdoor pipe. It just happens that the membrane on my filter unit is too strongly stuck in place for simply using pliers.

    My 3-stage RO filter unit is positioned within the laundry water tub. This is useful just in case the filtered water dispenser container accidentally overflows. No damage will result because any filtered water overflow goes down the laundry tub drain.

    Elderly lady here. Stage 4 filter was a pain! I had done it before, so wasn't expecting it to be a problem. Back in the day, APEC had awesome customer service. The tech would stay on the phone with me until I resolved whatever issue I was having. Those days are gone. Today they emailed me a photo of how to remove the cap with a plastic wrench which was smaller than the one you use for Stages 1, 2 & 3 and did not come with my unit. The rep opened a ticket for me, said someone would call me back, but nope -- nothing yet. I eventually took the housing to a neighbor, who easily removed the end cap. After that, I had to deal with several leaks and lots of water everywhere. And again, leaks were not an issue last time, so I feel like the connections are wearing out or something. Phooey.

      Sorry for the confusion. We strive to provide exceptional service to all of our customers. With all of our systems we provide 2 wrenches one smaller one for your membrane and a half wrench for your pre-filters. It is easier to open the membrane when you remove it from the system and open it countertop shown in the instructions that was emailed to you.
      Sorry to hear of your leaks. Our team will reach out to you directly so that we can obtain pictures of your leaks. We are happy to resolve the issue you are having.

      @@FreeDrinkingWater The smaller wrench did not come with my unit, so the emailed photo did not help at all. Only a neighbor with very strong hands could open the cap. If you read the comments here, you will see that it's a serious problem. The leaks stopped when I realized things just didn't fit together easily like the last time I changed #4 and #5. My big complaint is that you used to have awesome techs who were available by phone immediately, stayed on the line, and walked me through any issues I was having. They were very supportive, courteous, easy to understand, and never had to email or text me anything. Even ordering filters from you guys isn't the good experience it used to be.

    Agh, I remembered why I hate changing these filters today! Tips for future self:
    - Need to not just turn pin valve but bigger water valve under sink as well
    - 1st membrane is hardest to get off. Put on side, use grippy shelf liner on wrench for better leverage
    - Use large roasting pan when unscrewing to catch water that will spill out
    - canisters will need to be cleaned out
    - ***Important** Make sure filters are well screwed on (yes, this is why they are so tough to get off!) otherwise water will come squirting out the top edge!

      As long as you have the needle valve turned clockwise until it comes to a complete stop and tank is close, then open the drinking water faucet to release any pressure build up there should be no water going through the system and main cold water valve would not need to be turned off. Stages 1, 2, 3, 5 were not hard to replace. Stage 4 RO membrane was a *****. I had to use a husky strap wrench to counter torque in order to remove the housing. Also, one of the tubings wouldn't come off - a snip with a pair of scissors was a easy solution for that one.

  • @joelschiffer

    Quick tip, if you have leaks sometimes the tubing is damaged and has bite marks in it from the quick disconnect fittings. cut a piece of the tubing off past where the bite marks are and reinsert and your leak will go away.

    Video is okay, but it obviously shows a system that actually wasn't in use. There will be lots of water in the filter canisters, so advise you to have towels on the floor to collect the spillage. As for clockwise and counterclockwise, it's all relative and depends on which direction you are using as a reference. Thanks for the advice on running 2 full tankfuls through if you replace the membrane.

      Hello Ken,
      Thank you for your inquiry. I'm happy to help!
      The tee is universal, so the yellow tube could go into either port of the tee.

      Thank you for your inquiry. Stage 4 and 5 can be changed at the same time. After changing both filters, you can then proceed flush out the tank a couple of times.

      Hello,

      Thank you for your inquiry, I'm happy to help!

      Our systems are industry standard and our filters can be used with under standard designed systems. However, some units may require the use of proprietary filters. Yes, you can use 6 cartridges and two tanks with a system.

      Hello Customer,
      The reverse osmosis system is designed to remove fluoride from the water so no additional filter is needed for that. Our systems are user friendly so anyone that is a little handy can install and maintain the unit as many of our customers have. If you need further assistance, feel free to contact us directly by calling 1-800-880-4808 or e-mailing us at info@apecwater.com. We are in the office from Monday-Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm PST.

    Thank you for your instructions. Please can you help? I have 2 questions please.
    On first flush, I got a lot leak from the membrane (black water), I fixed this & left it running for 5 minutes, but only 30 seconds of black water & then all clear water came out.
    Q1: On 2nd flush, I get a few dribbles of water & then nothing comes out. Water pressure is saying zero ? I cannot use this without doing a 2nd flush, right?
    Q2: how long to leave the tank fill up to make sure it's 100% full before emptying it? (Obviously I'll leave it running till there's no more water). Also , which taps to close/open at this stage, please? ie. I think only Mains on, tank on.
    Thank you

    • @FreeDrinkingWater
      @FreeDrinkingWater  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello,
      after replacing all the filters on the unit, you would turn the feed water back on and open the tank valve. Then you would open the drinking water faucet and flush out one tank of water (which takes about 6-8 minutes) until the water comes out in a tiny continuous stream. You would then close the faucet. There only needs to be one flush done.
      It will take approximately 2-3 hours for the tank to fill depending on water pressure. At this point the main feedwater valve should be open all the way, the tank valve should be open and the drinking water faucet should be closed.
      If when it dribbles you lift the tank to see if it feels light or heavy after it dribbles out. If the tank feels heavy then the bladder inside may have worn out.
      If you need further assistance, feel free to contact us directly by calling 1-800-880-4808 or e-mailing us at info@apecwater.com. We are in the office from Monday-Friday from 8:00 am-5:30 pm PST.

      @FreeDrinkingWater  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are referring to releasing the built up pressure in the system, once you completely shut off the inlet, close the tank then open up the drinking water faucet there should be no more water within a few seconds or so. Just changed the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th stage. The water is tested as variety like 90 to 200, before replacing them, it was 70. How much water to flush in order to get below 70?

    • @FreeDrinkingWater
      @FreeDrinkingWater  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Greg Liu,

      Thank you for your inquiry, I'm happy to help!

      Typically after changing the stage 5 filter, we recommend flushing out the first tank of water. However, the TDS is removed by the stage 4 membrane. It is possible that it might be time to change the membrane.

    To speed up the process of draining the tank, I put slightly some more air pressure into it. Drains much faster.

    • @FreeDrinkingWater
      @FreeDrinkingWater  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,

      Thank you for your comment. We recommend having the pressure in the tank be no more than about 5-7psi. If there is too much air pressure in the tank, it will not be able to hold as much water. Draining the tank typically takes about 4-5 minutes.

      @FreeDrinkingWater  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello,
      Thank you for your inquiry. We're happy to help !
      It normally takes 3-4 hours for the storage tank to fill the first time after installation or the filters being changed. When the tank is full, the drain water will stop running, and the tank will feel very heavy. After 3-4 hours, it would be safe to flush the first tank of water.
