In the summer, of the way out of a motorsport event, there was a chap with a V8 S-Type with a loud exhaust (and the non-chrome grille etc) and lowered suspension which did look suitably mean (a modern interpretation of a 60s gangster car perhaps.....)
Nice car, but you made the right decision. Cars like that are fine for owners when new, as they can clearly afford to run them properly. Once at that age though, and with that mileage, and that size engine, they're best avoided - Unless you simply want to polish it, or store it away as a future collectors piece. Not all Jags are expensive to run though. I have a 9 year old 2.2 XF, 32,000 miles, my daily driver, and it costs no more to run than a typical family car. Service it myself, and always will search out the best deals on parts, so all is well. I'm enjoying your 12 Days Of Christmas Countdown, and waiting to see what car you buy during the holidays👍.
Hi Jon a great video probably a good curve ball on those my cousin had one and cost him a fortune to run and maintain may be ok when on warranty when new not older as expensive to repair
I have almost the exact same car here in WA State. 2001 model year, BR Green, identical interior. However it is left hand drive with the 4.0l engine. Parked at the moment so cannot comment on running costs.
I have a X reg. S Type. 98k. 3.0L. Tax lower that facelift model of 2001 on. See my vid on S Type petrol consumption, 200 mile round trip at 40mpg at steady 60-70 mph. Been well serviced and each service about £250 same as any car. Drive is smooth and powerful, 240bhp and 0-60 a bit quicker than facelift model. Love running about in it and so different to most stuff on the roads these days.
The modern S Type Jaguar was always a quirky model in the lineup in my opinion, perhaps a little too ‘retro’ in its looks. Even, dare I say, a little awkward. As a Jaguar fan, I’ve never owned an S Type but never really desired to. So totally understand your decision to let yours go Jon. And at least you made a profit from its sale! Amongst many Jaguars I’ve owned over the years, I bought a 2002 X Type 2.1 SE manual back in 2014 from its original owner and I still continue to own and enjoy it to this day. It hasn’t proved disastrous in running costs and has been extremely reliable. A good drive too being a V6 with a manual gearbox. The X Type is another rapidly disappearing model, perhaps you should try an X Type sometime Jon? Really enjoying the series by the way!
@@matthewc.419 No. Common mistake Matthew. You're thinking of the X-Type. The car here is an S-Type, which was based on the same platform as the American Lincoln LS.
Im actually genuinely shocked 😳, i have a 2001 jag s type 3.0 v6 and the running costs have been similar to the corolla i had before.....i swear it has been reliable ,and inexpensive 8 months later .....107k
S-Type? Meh. Old-man-car styling, the incessant "Jaaaaaag" thing. No thanks. The engine however... Ford Duratec (Porsche+Cosworth designed) V6 derived engine. Very good power output but some problems with oil scavenging on fast corners, causing oil starvation on the bearings. Fixable though. The engine is popular for fitting into the MX-5, where it is slightly *lighter* than the Mazda 4 cylinder, whilst being considerably more powerful and pushes the mass further back.
This is one I certainly dont miss! What do you think?
I’ve had 3 S-types, heavy on fuel but light on other costs, still miss one of them!
😁👍
Jon in a Jaaaag. Now that was a surprise 😊. I think we all agree with you letting this one go, those running costs are pretty high indeed
Surpriseeeee 😂
Yeah, I wouldn't want to pay the costs either, Jon 😄.... Nice but deep pockets needed. I like to think I get around as cheap as possible 😁
I do too nowadays 🤣

Oooh that does sound good

I agree. Sadly no cars being bought this month 🤣 thanks for watching
@@JonCoupland Ahhh, so you're waiting to see what bargains come along in early January ? We all know you can't resist ! 😝
These are beautiful cars Jaguar got the design perfect as with the X type these were a modern version of the Mark 1 and Mark 2 Jaguar and S type
I agree they are good looking things!
at least you itched the scratch my other half says no jags end of lol
Indeed. I don't think I'll be having another
Excellent cars. I agree, the ‘02 to ‘04 cars are the ones to have.
Thanks for watching
@@JonCoupland I’ve had mine for the best part of ten years. Fast disappearing as you say and got my money, the most likely future collectible Jag.
Love the series, Jaguar or proton, no contest protons win every time on running costs.
There may be a Proton appearing soon
A 2.5 V6 manual would be alluring. I prefer the later dash personally.
Yes I'd have preferred that spec too

Blimey. Glad I sold it

Will it be back on the road soon?

Sounds good 👍

As Dad said - "Not a propper Jaguar"
Excellent cars prefer the 04 models 👌 always interesting to note that we can afford the cars we wants it's the upkeep we can't afford
Very true!
My uncle had a diesel for a while. I can't remember if it was a 2.7 or a 3 litre v6 but he loved that thing and claimed it was economical.
Interesting! Id expect them to be much more economical too 👍
@JonCoupland the torque suited the gearbox, too.. it flew.
Nice car, too expensive to run though.
It sure is
3.0L V6 is the same basic unit as found in the Ford Mondeo ST220, And yes, it is thirsty!
Interesting. Still bloody expensive to run 🤣
Basically a mondeo underneath
@@matthewc.419That's the X Type
@@matthewc.419 No. Common mistake Matthew. You're thinking of the X-Type. The car here is an S-Type, which was based on the same platform as the American Lincoln LS.
@narabdela Lincoln, the higher ended label of FORD >in the U.S 🤷

Maybe mine had something more sinister going on then? But genuinely it was so thirsty
the lagging issue probs caused more fuel loss,
I never thought about that at the time. You are probably right! 😄👍
As you say, you got to scratch an itch so i think you made the right decision. Definitely less of a keeper potential than others
I agree :) - was a nice car nonetheless
Back in the sixties only Bank Robbers could afford to run a Jag.
🤣🤣👍
Ford TRANSIT???????🤷
Good move to get rid! That car would've driven your dad mad and drained your bank account!
I agree 🤣
Rust kills them off
Sadly so
No such thing as a cheap Jaguar. Very nice looking car though
I agree
Old timers know TLC means, tons of loot and cash.
Ha! None of that round here sadly - ive spent it all on cars!
Great cars bit definately the worst of the s types.the dash was ugly compared to the facelift ones.still great cars tho.
Ah really? I must admit I can't picture a facelift dash

Very interesting. Was relatively nippy when it kicked in 🤣
Nice cars but so expensive
Tell me about it
