The only racism I've experienced so far (DIRECTLY) in person was rejection from places like karaoke spots or massage & beauty spots. As far as dating is just BETTER for foreigners in general. I mean I never had a problem with women here old or young. I did get fetishized a lot, but also complimented even more. But that really comes down to your actual looks than race. Just FYI I'm a dark-skinned black male from the states
I never had any issues when I was stationed there while in the army.I was at Camp Stanley and I'm also a dark-skinned,black male.The Korean women near Camp Stanley LOVED black men !!! LOL. But,some black soldiers didn't want to date Korean nationals,but-I DID !!!LOL. I've always loved asian women and was like a kid in a candy store.
Dating and being fetishized are two different things. When you’re fetishized, usually dating is way off of the table. More foreigners face that when living in Asia (being fetishized, and not taken seriously in the dating game) than almost anything else. I hope people eventually realize that being fetishized is not a good thing. It’s negative.

It’s really beautiful to see how the responses have shifted more positively over the years because I would watch videos like this and there was just way more negative things that foreigners, specifically black foreigners, would say with their experience in Korea but now it seems things are shifting so that’s amazing. I’m planning to go over there next year for university so hopefully I can add to the positive feedback.

When videos about black people in Korea started popping up, everyone was way too used to how they were treated in America, but now they've come to acknowledge the fact that Koreans don't look at them the same way racist Anglos do. The dynamic is just completely different, and it should be the first thing to realise before going to Korea and Asia in general. In fact, I live in another Western country, and I have never seen racism like in America my entire life, so I think America is a pretty damn special place.

You know as a person who is both Black and Korean. I find both sides look at eachother and think we're so different but I find we are actually very alike in many ways.

I'm a South African currently doing my Second year at Dongseo University, Busan. Koreans especially the Ajummas would stop me and ask to touch/feel if my hair is "real".
I don't hate South Koreans but if I were in your shoes I'll probably ask the ahjummas these questions: Ma'am, how would you feel if you are in my country and a total stranger walks up to you and ask to touch your hair because they want to know if it's real or not? The young girl who got the scholarship is beautiful and her Korean blew me away. The slim young man too. As a Korean American it made me really happy and also jealous cuz they are way better at speaking it than I am. I regret not learning it at a younger age.
Korea is the next place I want to go too. I’ve been to China and it truly was the best time of my life! Not everything is racist and yes some things come off as uncomfortable because they aren’t use to interacting with someone different from them but they do try to be welcoming and understanding once you tell them. Plus we have some similarities with each other, only differences mostly is the color of our skin and a few cultural differences. I’ve heard both sides of black ppl having positive and negative experiences. But everyone experiences are different and It’s just nice to hear some positivity in all this madness of the world. China is extremely racist nowadays. You’d feel the difference if you went back. The ‘golden’ period of being a foreigner in China ended around 2018-2019, some people say 2016. Btw, I realized discrimination in East Asia has something to do with numbers. The fewer the number of foreigners, the better they treat them, once that numbers reaches a certain threshold, discrimination gets worse too. I think it’s the same everywhere in the world, and that exactly what happened in China.
This is a relief somewhat for me, I want to pursue my education in South Korea but I've been scared of the possibility of things going bad because I'm a person of color.
I had the same preconceptions before leaving for South Korea last year. Trust me, it's going to be fine. The best thing you could do is to have your own experience and at the end of the day, you will be proud of yourself!
I know one friend who as a black woman pursues her academic career here in South Korea. She does so well and get herself mingling with her classmates soon. I also saw a lot of black people study as an exchange student or a full-time student in universities!

Since years ago people would say negative things and this year we hear more positivity coming from the black people living there but i like that they also said just like there are weird people in the countries live, it’s the same in sk but when it comes to customer service they do better and dont care who u are. At the end of the day every country has their issues and problems but if u just continue to move in your path and really focus on you and the blessings you have u will see the difference. To those black people including myself that wants to go sk , dont be scared at all just go and enjoy your experience bc you might find gems of life while u out there. Just be respectful bc if u have noticed , if you really respect their culture as you are they gone do the same back and im not gonna generalize bc yes there are some that b a bit disrespectful but if you know that in general you are choosing peace and vibes then keep in that direction and not look at the crazy shit.
I grew up in Korea and as a kid/teen I’ve had Adjuma’s walk up to me and touch my hair 😂 one halmony even tried sniffing me from behind hahaha I always took it as the fact they they weren’t really exposed to POC and my natural hair because they didn’t have it or at least MUCH of it. But overall they’re extremely friendly. Overall the discrimination has been minimal, they’re just very curious especially once they discover you can speak Korean they ask so many questions 🤭
In South Korea ppl stares you coz you're a foreigner.. And it's kinda normal in every country like ppl who comes to India we also stares them not bcoz of their looks but because they're foreigners. 🙏❤

mature black people, who factually say how it is. just because someone stares at you, doesnt mean they are racist, same when they talk about your hair or anything thats different, simply because they as black people are different there, nothing wrong with it, accept the fact that not many know about your race, if you want to be accepted and respected, give that out yourself first and teach them if they want to know something. for many koreans the only thing they know about black people, and white people, are the things they got from movies.

I'm so glad i stumbled on this video on my feed. I've always wondered what's like to be black in Korea and other Asian countries. Racism is ugly as f**k and it matters how a society deals with it. I'm Brazilian and brown and I can tell racism is pretty bad there (I live in Ireland now), even though it's a multicultural and mixed country.
Racism is always worse in countries that have more diversity. Even research shows this. There was a map of bias in USA and it showed how in more White States(like Idaho, South Dakota, Wyoming, etc) there was less bias compared to states that had more diversity(so people who are black, white, latino, etc)...Why is this? Because as people experience other groups more, they actually become more biased and not less(because people always think it's the opposite). There are books that talk about tribalism in all of us and how difficult it is to change that mindset. When other groups come to your nation in large numbers, you become more cautious because you don't want to change your culture and then you start becoming more negative towards those that are not of your own tribe. I've seen this both in California(where Whites started moving out in large numbers when more latinos started coming in) and also in Canada when places with certain Asian populations became high(and also Whites started moving out in large numbers).
I'm a 60 years old Asian man who grew up in Brazil and although in general, Brazilians are very accepting and friendly people, I experienced my share of racism there primarily from the white European Brazilians. I was told many times that my "kind" was not welcome there. It was very common to hear them mimicking Japanese accent and pulling the conner of their eyes in a mocking way. I left Brazil to study abroad and never returned. Those experiences stays with you forever.

I think the staring is because like foreigners standout more and ofc ppl are going to stare like if u are white/Asian in our country ppl are going to stare at you but mostly they are saying how pretty you are and other positive things
It’s just nice to know that the people that are from different parts of the world and they are black have positive experiences. I was born in the UK and I am black my parents came to the UK in the early. My parents worked very hard. I like what this reporter is doing . Korea is a country I know that I will never visit. Because I have no family or connection there. But I like the culture their foods. Black people are warm and loving and get along with anyone. Colour should not matter. My first crush was African-American. She was the most beautiful person in my class. Her smile and her personality is what got me.. then it was her hair :). Maybe I'm generalizing it but I find that most black people(ones I've met) are very passionate and love that about them. Very friendly people especially once you get to know them.

Those toxic videos are actually true. A lot of times people are deported out of your country for speaking the truth, so it has been a lot of sugar coating going on about how nice your country is. I also wanted to move to Korea, I even planned the apartment bills, housing, and even what type of furniture I would buy!! I study Asian culture and study how you’re supposed to eat, what foods they have, how to respect their elders and EVERYTHING, but the one thing I was so worrried about was being a black woman in a country that doesn’t really have a lot of black people, I have learned in ANY country even the US, you can experience racism anywhere, not saying it in a bad way and wishing it on anyone who wants to go to another country, And even if someone is racist, don’t think anything about it. I absolutely LOVE to go to multiple countries and study new culture, and I’m glad these people had a good experience :)

The American and European racism is very much in your face. It's not unusual to get loud racist remarks in the streets or even to get attacked or harassed during the day. Asia is more subtle in its discrimination, so foreigners do feel safer overall in Asia.

I got here at the end of November and I’ve been having positive experiences. I do get stared at a lot, especially because I’m the only foreigner here in my area. But so far I’ve been able to get used to it. Everyone keeps their distance but they are nice. Lots of people like my braids too😂😂my boss asked me if it is my real hair but it’s all good

Korea is a country where there is one nationality forming the nation. People stare at you not because your skin color but some of them might never seen a person with different skin color.
Please learn to speak Korean. Korean embrace everyone regardless. We try to do at our best when we doing things even amongst us or move to other countries. Once anyone start speak our language we let our guard down.

It’s really beautiful to see how the responses have shifted more positively over the years because I would watch videos like this and there was just way more negative things that foreigners, specifically black foreigners, would say with their experience in Korea but now it seems things are shifting so that’s amazing. I’m planning to go over there next year for university so hopefully I can add to the positive feedback.

When videos about black people in Korea started popping up, everyone was way too used to how they were treated in America, but now they've come to acknowledge the fact that Koreans don't look at them the same way racist Anglos do. The dynamic is just completely different, and it should be the first thing to realise before going to Korea and Asia in general. In fact, I live in another Western country, and I have never seen racism like in America my entire life, so I think America is a pretty damn special place.

Korea is the next place I want to go too. I’ve been to China and it truly was the best time of my life! Not everything is racist and yes some things come off as uncomfortable because they aren’t use to interacting with someone different from them but they do try to be welcoming and understanding once you tell them. Plus we have some similarities with each other, only differences mostly is the color of our skin and a few cultural differences. I’ve heard both sides of black ppl having positive and negative experiences. But everyone experiences are different and It’s just nice to hear some positivity in all this madness of the world. Love hearing others experiences
China is extremely racist nowadays. You’d feel the difference if you went back. The ‘golden’ period of being a foreigner in China ended around 2018-2019, some people say 2016. Btw, I realized discrimination in East Asia has something to do with numbers. The fewer the number of foreigners, the better they treat them, once that numbers reaches a certain threshold, discrimination gets worse too. I think it’s the same everywhere in the world, and that exactly what happened in China.

This is a relief somewhat for me, I want to pursue my education in South Korea but I've been scared of the possibility of things going bad because I'm a person of color.
I had the same preconceptions before leaving for South Korea last year. Trust me, it's going to be fine. The best thing you could do is to have your own experience and at the end of the day, you will be proud of yourself!

I know one friend who as a black woman pursues her academic career here in South Korea. She does so well and get herself mingling with her classmates soon. I also saw a lot of black people study as an exchange student or a full-time student in universities!

I grew up in Korea and as a kid/teen I’ve had Adjuma’s walk up to me and touch my hair 😂 one halmony even tried sniffing me from behind hahaha I always took it as the fact they they weren’t really exposed to POC and my natural hair because they didn’t have it or at least MUCH of it. But overall they’re extremely friendly.
Overall the discrimination has been minimal, they’re just very curious especially once they discover you can speak Korean they ask so many questions 🤭

Great interviews. These people show how much a person enriches themselves from living overseas, they all seemed to have gained a lot from being in Korea
mature black people, who factually say how it is. just because someone stares at you, doesnt mean they are racist, same when they talk about your hair or anything thats different, simply because they as black people are different there, nothing wrong with it, accept the fact that not many know about your race, if you want to be accepted and respected, give that out yourself first and teach them if they want to know something. for many koreans the only thing they know about black people, and white people, are the things they got from movies.

When a person of a different race asks to touch my hair, I ask them if I can touch their hair also, usually they pass on that option.

I'm so glad i stumbled on this video on my feed. I've always wondered what's like to be black in Korea and other Asian countries. Racism is ugly as f**k and it matters how a society deals with it. I'm Brazilian and brown and I can tell racism is pretty bad there (I live in Ireland now), even though it's a multicultural and mixed country.
Racism is always worse in countries that have more diversity. Even research shows this. There was a map of bias in USA and it showed how in more White States(like Idaho, South Dakota, Wyoming, etc) there was less bias compared to states that had more diversity(so people who are black, white, latino, etc)...Why is this? Because as people experience other groups more, they actually become more biased and not less(because people always think it's the opposite). There are books that talk about tribalism in all of us and how difficult it is to change that mindset. When other groups come to your nation in large numbers, you become more cautious because you don't want to change your culture and then you start becoming more negative towards those that are not of your own tribe. I've seen this both in California(where Whites started moving out in large numbers when more latinos started coming in) and also in Canada when places with certain Asian populations became high(and also Whites started moving out in large numbers).
I'm a 60 years old Asian man who grew up in Brazil and although in general, Brazilians are very accepting and friendly people, I experienced my share of racism there primarily from the white European Brazilians. I was told many times that my "kind" was not welcome there. It was very common to hear them mimicking Japanese accent and pulling the conner of their eyes in a mocking way. I left Brazil to study abroad and never returned. Those experiences stays with you forever.

I was born in the UK and I am black my parents came to the UK in the early. My parents worked very hard. I like what this reporter is doing . Korea is a country I know that I will never visit. Because I have no family or connection there. But I like the culture their foods. Black people are warm and loving and get along with anyone. Colour should not matter. I also wanted to move to Korea, I even planned the apartment bills, housing, and even what type of furniture I would buy!! I study Asian culture and study how you’re supposed to eat, what foods they have, how to respect their elders and EVERYTHING, but the one thing I was so worrried about was being a black woman in a country that doesn’t really have a lot of black people, I have learned in ANY country even the US, you can experience racism anywhere, not saying it in a bad way and wishing it on anyone who wants to go to another country, And even if someone is racist, don’t think anything about it. I absolutely LOVE to go to multiple countries and study new culture, and I’m glad these people had a good experience :)

The American and European racism is very much in your face. It's not unusual to get loud racist remarks in the streets or even to get attacked or harassed during the day. Asia is more subtle in its discrimination, so foreigners do feel safer overall in Asia.

I got here at the end of November and I’ve been having positive experiences. I do get stared at a lot, especially because I’m the only foreigner here in my area. But so far I’ve been able to get used to it. Everyone keeps their distance but they are nice. Lots of people like my braids too😂😂my boss asked me if it is my real hair but it’s all good
