Many commenters, especially African Americans, have been asking me about racism in Korea. They are scared to come to Korea because they think its racist. I don't think Korea or Koreans are racist for the most part, but what do you all think?!

I'm a Korean. Born in 1985. Currently, I believe that racism should never exist. There is no country without racial discrimination.
      It's a difference of degree.
I have seen many Korean TH-camrs who film overseas travel videos face racial discrimination while traveling abroad.
I was really, really angry when I saw that. In Korea, the level of racial discrimination is generally not as severe as in European countries such as the United States, Germany, and France.
I say it again. Racism exists in all countries and varies in degree.

This is an additional comment. There are a lot of young Koreans here who write comments that only vaguely pretend to know what the world is like when they don't really know what's going on. In my opinion, the comments they write are cute. These kids are like newborn chicks who don’t have much life experience and don’t know what the world is like.

I spent some time in Korea last year. As a black American as well, I've felt more comfortable being black in Korea than in the States. While I've never experienced overt racism in the States, you are constantly being reminded of it and being told what your identity should be in the news and social media and it can exhausting as someone who just wants to do right by their fellow countrymen and women. In Korea, it was very nice to have a relief from that. Hope to see you around Korea soon!

There will always be some people like in any other countries who may not like black people for whatever reason but Korea will not go as far as to physically discriminate or commit violent random unprovoked hate crimes against black people that you often see in the U.S. and EU else where. All in all, it is a very safe country for any foreigners who want to visit or to live here. Say no to racism!! Bye~~

Racism exists in every country, but based on my experience living in Korea for the past 10 years,
it seems to have less racism compared to many other countries.
Often, those who claim online that Korea is a racist country have never actually visited Korea.

It’s hard to put into words exactly what racism is like in Korea.. it’s different than the US. But not intentionally to harm in many sense. people do have to put into perspective the context of Korea as a homogeneous country and what people have generally been exposed to (sometimes not much exposure to different people). And yes, it’s difficult to agree with people who have opinions and presumptions without visiting or experiencing korea for themselves.

In particular, Southeast Asians are famous for framing Korea as racist. Southeast Asians like the Japanese more than Korea. That is why they always try to see and talk about Japan better than Korea. Racial discrimination exists in every country. The reason why Southeast Asians frame Korea as a racist country, excluding Japan, is that some of them are likely to be anti-Koreans or Japanese pretending to be Southeast Asians.

    • @XingShang-b6s

Korea has a higher minimum wage than Japan. I can't understand why Southeast Asians frame Korea as a racist country and still earn money in Korea.

    • @kakaungranduomo2666

Precisely. Those who have stayed in sk for a long time and experienced their society first-hand will know this well. Of course, discrimination exists in korea as well. It's a phenomenon that occurs in all countries inhabited by humans. However, it's difficult to view discrimination in sk as simply discrimination related to ‘race’. More precisely, it often stems from feelings between countries due to diplomatic or historical relationships. In other words, rather than discriminating against others bcz their skin color or appearance is different from their own, there are cases where people dislike people from countries that have bad relationship with their own country. This is also not the right thing to do, but it cannot be concluded that it's simply discrimination based on ‘race’.
Additionally, they have formed a homogeneous society for over a thousand years. Even when foreigners immigrate to korean peninsula in past, most of them assimilate into korean society, lose their original identity, and became koreans. Therefore, to them, foreigners are object of ‘unfamiliarity’ rather than object of ‘hate’. The latter view can also be perceived as racism, but it must be distinguished from hatred.
On the other hand, as mentioned earlier, because the one-ethnic sentiment is still deeply rooted throughout the society, foreigners must follow the order of koreans, at least 'outside the home', in order to adapt to korean society. Otherwise, they sometimes become very aggressive. While I lived in sk, had met a variety of foreigners like me. Those who followed the korean order well were satisfied with their lives there, but those who rejected it experienced discrimination. This seemed to be a rule that applied not only to foreigners but also to same koreans.

  • @grow1820

Based on my decade-long experience living in Korea as an American, I've observed that most Koreans don't discriminate against foreigners.
This is likely because over 90% of the population is Korean, and they seldom have the opportunity to befriend foreigners.
They generally don't concern themselves much with others; whether you're white or black, don't expect Koreans to be fluent in English or to initiate friendly conversations.
This isn't due to racism; they don't even do this among themselves.
Integration requires learning Korean and showing a willingness to understand the culture.Imagine an American being approached by a Korean who speaks only Korean and shows no interest in American culture-it would seem odd. Likewise, in Korea, foreigners should acknowledge that they are in a nation with its own unique culture and language. Koreans are not obligated to go out of their way to accommodate those who show no desire to learn about or engage with their culture and language. Incidents of foreigners being assaulted by Koreans are never happened, but there have been instances of Americans attacking Asians in America, as well as foreigners assaulting Koreans in Korea. Such occurrences have been noted multiple times in Itaewon.
    .

There is more hostility, anger, and racism in the US, UK, South America and Africa combined than in South Korea. There are racist and sexist individuals in every country, and in varying degrees. However, having lived in South Korea and other countries, what I have noticed is what I wrote above. The hatred of foreigners/different races is worse in the other countries. The disrespectful attitudes based on gender and race are 100000x worse in the other countries mentioned, including the US. The US is worse when it comes to racism and sexism spewed by individuals. Koreans are raised with the respect in the homes and schools that America isn't. It's a different level of appreciation Koreans are raised with. A perfect example is how the Korean subways look and are managed. The way the Korean gover/nment cares about their society speaks volumes. The way the US gov/ernment doesn’t care about their society speaks volumes, too. Walk down the streets and intp the subways in the major cities in America. You can see how little pride the American gov/ernment shows its people. It's reflected in how their schools, hospitals, and police stations are run. South Korea is on another level of control and safety. The American gover/nment is run by bullies.

But when my preacher father(no English) had a chance to preach in one of the churches in Bronx with translation, the church members who were mostly black, said that they like my father and if the translation is right, they would welcome to have my father as a senior pastor in their church. Korea is not a multicultural country with a long history of immigration unlike the United States or some European countries. The foreign population was 1.1% of the total population in 2006, about 1 million 10 years ago and now 2.5 million(4.9% of the total population). Most of them are from Asian countries and Westerners are less than 0.5% of the population(Black people are less than 0.1%) So when they see a westerner they're not used to it so they still tend to think it's amazed or different from them. That's why they stare at Westerners a lot. Korea is still in its early stages of multiculturalism and the locals need time to adapt to foreigners. As the number of foreigners increases, laws and culture will gradually improve to become more foreigner-friendly. It takes time so it will be difficult for people who lack patience to live there. People don't realize how few Westerners there are in Korea. Let me show the government statistics below.

While it'd be a lie if one says racism isn't existent in S Korea at all, in many cases it's actually a result of the person not behaving appropriate to Korean culture. It's not just foreigners in Korea. I live in Canada and I see some Koreans do things that don't align with the culture here, which obviously leads to not-too-nice responses from the locals, and they overinterpret that as people being racist to them.

I remember reading an article about an unfortunate incident that happened in Korea, where an old man was trying to say to a Black guy that he can sit here, but what the Black guy heard was the n-word and he beat the old man. In Korean, "you" is "ni", and after the subject of a Korean sentence you put "ga", so you know what it would sound like for English speakers when put together. You may have heard this in some kpop songs. That poor old man probably didn't even speak English at all nor knew about the n-word. I am a Korean born in New York and currently live in Ohio. Kind of a funny story on how racism can benefit in a small way… if you are in a restaurant being served by a different race and the service is awful or if you talk to a different color stranger and they are standoffish - in The States, we can think..”Oh maybe it’s because I’m Black, Asian or White while they are (different color).. “ to sort of help write off the episode right? But when in Korea (like Francois said : is a country with a very homogenous ethnic society where most are Koreans) .. if a waiter, staff, stranger or a friend of a friend is mean to me.. I know it’s because they don’t like me personally as a person and has nothing to do with race. 😂

As a Korean, racial discrimination in modern Korea is very rare case. Koreans just equally detest what they hate regardless skin colour. For example, If someone expresses different ideologies such as communism(especially Chinese), homosexuality, Islamic principles, etc., he will experience real discrimination in Korea regardless of his skin colour and this tendency represents whole Korea society. Because a number of Koreans have conflicted themselves by their political leaning, religious thought, social class, illegal immigration, feminism, etc., there is no room for skin colour.
South-East Asian or Chinese could experience some discrimination due to the deterioration of illegal immigration and drug smuggling from SE-Asia and China to Korea society. In that Chinese people with the same skin colour and similar appearance as Koreans are major subject to discrimination, the aversion in Korea is not a matter of skin colour.
As mentioned before, Koreans are just equally disgusted by what they hate. it doesn't matter with skin colour and even Korean can be a target of loathing and scorn.

Most discrimination is a result of ignorance.
Humans instinctively know that discriminating is advantageous for survival, so they are basically made to discriminate.
The only way to fix it is to understand the other person through learning and intentionally control your own words and actions.
Therefore, if no country has yet succeeded in reducing the illiteracy rate to zero, it is natural that racial discrimination exists everywhere on the planet.
Therefore, when you experience racism, the best thing to do is not to criticize it but to impart knowledge.
Because all racism is caused by lack of knowledge.

Most recent first introduction of South Korean experience with black-skin colored people, especially african-americans, were in fact since Korean War. We koreans were begging for chocolates to the black american soldiers just 74 years ago. There are no basis to look african-americans down and consider skin color as of social class for us south koreans. Moreover, local south korean society prefers cultural synchronization over homogeneous. There are many foreign workers from middle asia and southeast asia recognized to be "true korean" by south korean public society not because they look alike koreans but speaks korean, eat like korean, and be alongside with korean society.
"Yes. You were born outside korea, but you can communicate with us koreans, you eat like korean, you share our morality, our rules, our customs, our values, and you live in korean soil, then you are korean."
Then about some racial conservative attitude on some korean families about you mentioned about your ex-girlfriend... korean families that views and values people divisional do discriminate people among homogeneousily-equal-koreans by which region they were born. By contrast, even if the ones born aborad but accustomed to the local customs, will be considered as of local koreans and will be named after the local region he or she settled in.
To be short, be open-minded to be along with koreans. We do not have such culture based on 'race'.

At first glance, foreigners tend to think it's equivelant to 'N' words, but if the ones know how language Korean works, It's the opposite. '형/누나/오빠/언니' is being used to call elder/experienced female/male with respect. '흑' which means 'Black' with it, the word '흑형/누나' literally means 'elderly/experienced male/female who is black'. There are no such historical background of slavery and social class kind of stuff like in the US but the skin color was most distinguished factor for koreans to distinguish other people from Africans or African-Americans. i agree with this take 100%. when visiting s korea, you may definitely get stares since their society is so racially homogeneous. but they’re never really thinking of you as being “inferior” in any way. At the end of the day, if you integrate and learn their ways they will treat you like family. In the US however, it feels like racial prejudice is more deeply rooted in our psyche - as though there are “cultural” issues with ethnic minorities that are associated with crime and other misbehavior. American racism is way worse. Plus Korean society is based on respect and they are just more polite in general.
I noticed that western Europe is also more like Asia (although a bit more rude). Over there I’ve had people blatantly throw racial slurs, but they almost don’t realize they’re being offensive or just don’t mean much by it. I think American racism is quite unique.

Korean is a homogenous country which is why they are racist but more so as a preferential treatment. I could be wrong but the image of blacks are predominantly influenced by the US media/entertainment. Because of that koreans specifically have a stereotype about black people whether good or bad…

I am a Korean who recently subscribed to your channel. I am so sad that you had a bad experience in Korea, and I am so sorry for you.
Such prejudice remains in the older generation of Korea. Since Korea was the poorest country since the Korean War (1950-1953), and there were many white countries in the past in advanced countries, older Koreans may have subconsciously envied them.
To be rude to you and openly discriminate against you is a very bad behavior. I don't think the professor deserves to teach others. He should be ashamed of himself.
However, I hope the experience is not about hatred of black people, but about the difference in preferences as an English teacher.
This is because some English academies in Korea have a preconceived notion that foreigners are native speakers than Korean, no matter how good teacher are at English.
Although Korean American are very good English teacher, they are discriminated against in their home country.
Some Korean tend to think that English is white people's language. It is not racial discrimination, but a difference in preference as an English teacher.
People deserve to be respected regardless of race.
I am ashamed of the non-manners of some older people in Korea. Many Koreans' eyes on foreigners are often curious eyes rather than racism.
I can feel it when I see what you say. You seem to be a nice person and intelligent, very thoughtful, warm and kind. Your soul is more beautiful. I hope you will be happy. I love your channel. Have a great time.😊

Supposing African Americans didn't do anything against Korean Americans during black people's massive riot in LA in 1991 and other racial conflicts such as the BLM protesting, most Koreans might not have had some negative feelings for African Americans. Unfortunately, lots of black people used to attack South Koreans Who operated small businesses instead of crazy white racists in the US society when they had a chance. Moreover, they attacked openly innocent Korean Americans during the pandemic season. They needed scapegoats instead of insane white racists at the time. What is it like being a Korean who was ridiculed by black people in America? That's my question before understanding this video.

The racism Racism is a sensitive subject especially in our time, but exactly what's the meaning of racism . the racism is the belief that another person is less than human -- because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth, religion or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. In the religion of Islam there is no racism because all people are equal . The messenger of Allah, Muhammad said: لا فرق بين عربي و لا أعجمي و لا أبيض ولا أسود إلا بالتقوى" حديث شريف" it means that there is no difference between Arabic and not Arabic People and between white or black person, but except in piety.( believing in god and doing good deeds and to move away from evil deeds , Obedience to Allah ....) It is shortly the view of el Islam about racism ,so what do you think about racism?
