Mikis Theodorakis - On My Life (Statement, 2010)

I was born between two world wars - Followed by a civil war, a dictatorship and hundreds of further deadly battles on this Planet Earth of ours. And this is above and beyond all the violence, terror, hunger and countless of diseases that continue to torment and kill many innocent people to this day. So, the more I developed a sense of self, the more I began to fear other people until I withdrew all the way into myself. And this is how I discovered music: it pointed a way out of the chaos that surrounded me, allowed me to experience harmony and helped me to make peace with life itself. At the same time, however, music also conveyed the seductive illusion that harmony might conquer chaos, sparking a constant, lifelong oscillation between light and dark, victory and defeat, hope and disappointment, joy and despair, triumph and tragedy.
In a sense I, too - in my very own way - was subject to the fate of humanity and thus to the ultimate insight that harmony remains an exceptional state, not the norm. And yet, this only applies to human society: everywhere else, harmony rules. In nature and space. And, naturally, in our own spiritual and cerebral creations - in art and, most of all, in music.
With this in mind, I can safely say that deep inside I have always been happy, thanks to my inseparable and intimate bond with music. And although the 86 years of my life have been many and often wearing, it nevertheless feels as if this time - and the way I lived it with and most of all for music - has been very brief after all.
