    EGO Nexus Power Station Review & Testing! Is this the Best Backup Generator?
    After a really bad storm hit Wisconsin we went 65 Hours WITHOUT Power and put the EGO Nexus Power Station to the test! How did it hold up? Find out!
    I review the 3000 Watt EGO Nexus Power Station Modular Battery Inverter, give an overview of its features and the companion iPhone or Android EGO Power + App, charging capabilities including solar charging, wattage output features, discuss the pros and cons of this unit, show real world examples of different appliances and electronics this unit can power such as a refrigerator, freezer, sump pump, laptop computer, TV, space heater, water heater, circular saw, outdoor lighting, and even a sound system.
    This is great for camping, tailgating, remote power or a powerful backup power source for your home or apartment that you can run as an indoor generator/inverter since there are no emissions.
    The EGO Power Nexus has 3000W Peak 2000 Watt Continuous Power, 3 120V A/C Outlets, 4 USB Ports, Bright LED Display Shows Run Time, Robust Steel Handles, Battery Powered Alternative to Gas Generators, Quiet Clean Power for Indoor and Outdoor Use, 4 Port Battery Charger (when plugged in), Weather-Resistant Construction

    Thanks for the information. I live in Austin, Texas and the freeze we had last February was terrible, disabling the city for 3 days. We had electricity but no water and the surrounding homes had neither. The city of Austin was definitely not ready for the weather, but at least I can be.

    FYI: The Rapid charger can/will likely draw up to 550 watts (says so right on the back). The Amazon inverter you showed maxed at 300 watts, and odds are the inverter built in your van is only 400 watts (like most vehicles). You only showed a fully charged battery glowing 'fully charged; in that setup. Drop a dead battery on it and odds are once all those fans kick in and it tries to "rapidly charge", you're going to overload the circuit. The regular charger max draw is only 210 watts, so use that if you don't have a larger inverter.

    I only have the ego leaf blower but this would be a great addition to my collection. I think it would be great in almost any situation unless your area is know for power outages longer than 1 day. if you can goto a friends place to charge it then gas is going to be the ticket. awesome for tailgate party, camping or for anything you might need a indoor power solution for. Here our power dies for 4-6 hr now and again. that would be awesome!

    • @TinkerForward
      @TinkerForward  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, this unit is great for tailgating, camping or short power outages lasting a few hours. Anything longer and youll need to have a way to charge the batteries to continue using it. I like the ability to hot swap the batteries, so you can chare them elsewhere and still use a battery to run the power station.

    I know this is kind of an older video but I know I’m not the 1st one to ask this but I don’t see an answer. If you plugged in a quick charger to the Nexus and kept the batteries rotating so to speak, would the unit be able to handle it? Losing one plug but always having batteries charging would seem to be a good thing in a long outage situation.

    most meaningful use of this power station is for a backup power for your modem/router and camping. i highly recommend solar charging setup because it makes sense to have a backup power that is not dependent on main power for recharging. rapid charger may reduce your battery life

    Question? Do you have to have the batteries on the generator to power up the generator to use it, or do you Not need any batteries to use the unit ?

  • @JohnDCrafton
    @JohnDCrafton ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I was looking into this for use after a hurricane, when power outages can be as long as a few weeks even to a couple of months. With how slow the charger is with the solar, I just don't see it being competitive with a gas generator for our purpose. If I have to charge it in the car, well, I'm using gas already so I might as well just use the generator. It's much more energy efficient to use a generator directly. A shame, really, because I like EGO's other products.

    Jeff, I was fortunate to happen upon your excellent video. You touched upon the very questions I would ask. Until now I didn't know that EGO had a power station. I have solar on my house with a rather large LG backup battery for that system for when the sun goes down during an outage. Even so, every system has weaknesses during extended power outages. I can see that the EGO power station could be beneficial and supplement my existing system under certain scenarios. In addition, I presently own an EGO mower with a 7.5 amp battery plus fast charger and an EGO trimmer with a 2.5 amp battery with a slow charger. The like the portability, flexibility, and quiet operation. Subsequently, I will expand my EGO inventory with their Nexus Power Station, a couple more 7.5 amp batteries, and the solar charge setup. I do have reservation about EGO products in one regard....they're made in China. Thank you for your video and may God Bless.

      I would caution the audience to ONLY consider those "off brand" with genuine UL-Listing (or ETL). Otherwise you pretty much invalidate your homeowners insurance in event of any fire/damage mishap. So far there are no offbrand batteries with such safety lab testing.

  • @jasonpalmer1552

    I bought mine about a year ago and I have to say the thing that is unacceptable is that it really does not operate outside. The battery terminals get corroded so make sure to apply dielectric grease. And eventually the unit stops functioning entirely if it's left out in the rain even though it has all the rain guards.
    For a product that reports to work both indoors and outdoors it is primarily a product for use indoors.

My 6500 generac worked great... with that said, oodles of extension cords the noise level ghastly.. and getting fuel was difficult... im thinking of selling it.. getting a small gereator for charging batteries as well as the solar option if fuel becomes unattainable...

    Odd, question but as you are one of the more recent and thorough reviews, is there any way to string more than one battery together per clip for extended run times? I have a lot more than four batteries, but might not be able to get to the unit right when they need to be swapped.

    • @TinkerForward
      @TinkerForward  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, I don't know of a way to have more than the 4 batteries on the power station at one time for run times. Using the EGO Power + app connected by wifi I can see the battery status and estimated run time on my smart phone even when I'm not right next to the unit. As an example, based on my current load plugged into the power station, if it says I have about 4 hours left of power, I'll come back shortly before the batteries are all out of power and hot swap them (swamp them out while the unit is still powering something) with fully charged batteries and check the estimated run time again. If I can't get to the unit right when batteries need to be swapped out, I'll try and plan accordingly to switch some batteries when the power station is at 50%

      The difference between that, and this.
      With this you don't only have a boat anchor when its not in use.
      Esp if you buy one that comes with the batteries.
      You cam be using these batteries for both, this unit, mower, snowblower, weed trimmer and so on.
      The eco flo, your not doing that.
      So my point, this is way better than that, for the people using ego products which is who this is more meant for.
      Its not meant to be a standalone, only ego product, for anyone. Although it can be, n like you mention will add to the cons.

I keep my EGO Nexus in the garage next to the extra refrigerator in the event we lose power, which has happened. Speaking from experience, you will need a small gas generator to recharge batteries with the Rapid Charger.

    This is a really cool unit, but falls short in a couple of ways. In today’s world, the lack of pass thru charging is unacceptable. It needs pass thru charging, and true UPS functionality would be even better. Second, it’s cool that you can get a solar charger but that should be built in OR if I am going to pay more than $150 for a solar charging add-on, I expect greater than 180 solar capacity. Bluetti has an add on for their stations that adds up to 500w of solar charging for $200. It would be even better if you could wall charge AND solar charge at the same time. I would buy one of these if a few of these changes were made for a 2nd generation device.

    I'm confused about this unit. It's called a 3040 '3000 WATT Power Station.' Does it hold 3000w itself? (If you look at a Renogy 'Power Station,' it actually holds stored power within itself. No external batteries are required. Am I right when I say that this seems like this is just a very grand battery charger that doesn't work without the external - and very expensive - batteries? (I do see the beauty in being able to use the batteries with all of the extra tools, etc., that are available.) But, in and of itself, the 'Bare Tool' 3040 can't do anything?

    @Catman1798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Soo You actually need the capability to predict when your power is gonna be out and have it charged up before hand. 🤔🤔🤔nice. And what happens during a winter storm like in south Texas in 2021 when no one had power? You will still need a gas generator so you can charge the batteries using the rapid charger so you can use this inside the house. That’s the only benefit this power station has. And solar charging won’t work. We didn’t have sun for a week during the storm. I would probably buy it still just because I can have it inside the house. But I’m still gonna need a Honda generator of some sort

    • @TinkerForward
      @TinkerForward  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The EGO batteries will discharge down to 30% automatically after no use for 30 days. I make it a point that on the first of every month I make sure the EGO batteries are charged on the unit. (I just put it on my calendar and it reminds me.) If I use the batteries in the meantime with the EGO tools, I make sure to charge them up after use. After you use the batteries when your power goes out you will need another method to charge them such as solar panels, using a vehicle's outlet / cigarette lighter converter with a battery charger, or getting the batteries to another location (such as a friend's or other family member's house with power) to recharge them. If you can't do that, then when the batteries run out of power you'll be out of luck. Benefits of this power station, you can hot swap batteries, so if you have at least 2 batteries, you can pull one and recharge it elsewhere while still running the power station with the others. You can also run it inside (unlike a gas generator) so its great for apartments or small locations where a gas generator isn't possible, its very portable and it tells you exactly how much battery time you have left according to the amount of power you are pulling from it, you also don't have to mess with gas or trying to start a gas generator with a pull string, but you must have charged batteries.

I was able to connect to the Ego Powerstation via wifi and bluetooth with that. After doing so, I can open up my app on my Galaxy S22 Ultra that has Android 12 and see that it is connected and see stats from the device. I just can't tell the device to connect to wifi or connect to the device via bluetooth on Android 12. The Ego Power+ app on Android only seems to work with Android 8.1 - 10. I have reported this to Ego.

      @@TinkerForward Do you think you could find the time to report the trouble to Ego when you do your testing? I've been going in circles with Ego support since I got my Powerstation in December. I finally have concrete evidence that the problem is with their app not working properly on Android 11 and 12. However, when Ego asked me to ship them a unit for testing, they tested with an iPhone and tried to call it a day. I reminded them that I was reporting the problem on Android. They used a Galaxy S9, which worked, but the latest update the S9 series got was Android 10. When I asked them to test with a device on Android 12, they flat out refused to do any more testing.
      I have another escalation with them right now after testing with my Tab S3, but I am not confident that they will listen to reason. It would help if more people report it to Ego directly. Lots of people have left poor reviews for the app on the Play Store and mention the same symptoms I've been seeing. When I brought that up to the one who did the testing with one of my replacement units, he said those are just coincidences.
      It has been a real struggle these last 3 months, but I'm hoping they'll do something now that I've shown that my wifi works fine if I use Android 9.

They are basic solar generators but, their prices and quality is very good. I initially purchased the E1000 (1028wh) for $499 (out the door)off their website with free shipping. I tested it on my home refrigerator and fully charge, it states it can run it for 22 hours. I haven’t ordered solar panels yet (presently researching panels). After satisfying test on the E1000, I have ordered their larger E3000 (3108wh) unit. It’s scheduled to be delivered next week. The plan is to use the E3000 to power the refrigerator and sump pump……..and use the E1000 to power TV, internet/cable router and a few lights.

      What you clearly have not researched is the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Agenda. They plan on eliminating fossil fuels and are implementing a carbon credit system based on your fossil fuel usage. Yes, we all have a gas generator. The problem is they are being phased out and this type of system has quite a future.

      @@bruced.370 what $300 generator will run your whole house plus heat? My $1,000 12kW peak gas/propane generator can’t run my entire house…everything I need, but I can’t run my central air…I have to put in window units and alternate running them. My house isn’t huge either.

    these are not generators people. they do not need gasoline though. But they will not run your appliances long. maybe 12 hours
    with 2 batteries and the batteries are 250 each.

      Batteries range in price greatly depending on 2.5kw, 5kw, 7.5kw or 10kw versions. They swap on the fly while powered which is a huge advantage.

      If you get the solar adapters, they will power the essentials for years straight. I use 2 of these in rotation with some Jackerys and homemade battleborne/rich solar inverter setups.

      @@monmixer Honestly, I wouldn't use Egos to power a home. They are more for 1-2 day power outages. Think about a rack mount system with at least 1,000-2,500 Ah capacity for a house. Or a larger 2-3kWh EcoFlow or Bluetti set up with all the expansion batteries. Amazon sells those. Will Prowse channel has reviews for all the larger rack and heavy wheeled systems. I make all my systems custom just for my needs but may go to a rack system since they are the best bang for the buck.

    We want a unit that can be charged with solar. not wall plug.
