Love how you go about the tasks in a slow and un-rushed way. Very therapeutic to watch someone who knows what they are doing.
A far cry from the 70’s when I pulled my Suzuki Titan 500 2stroke down using open ended spanners - and without a manual. Every move an adventure !

My old man had two of them, crapped the gearbox in one if I remember correctly

Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions - yep. That’s why I was working on mine! One of the gear cogs had simple fallen apart!

The stain in the one bore is likely from the engine sitting a long period with the exhaust valve open on the piston in that cylinder just past BDC on exhaust the upstroke.
Which is why when bikes are stored the exhaust outlets should be covered.
No surprise the guides are knackered, I suspected as much when you rode it and it was puffing a cloud after deceleration.

I'd agree with the shit stain being potentially, that piston sitting low in the cylinder with a valve open for a long time, moisture collecting and causing the liner to spot rust, I had myself with an old GSX engine sitting in a shed going through sunlight, no sunlight directly on it for a couple of years, caused two cylinders to suffer the metal worm, managed to get away with only replacing one liner in the end
Engine is currently in a Classic race bike and still going strong today, gets used hard, bulletproof these early Suzuki's just love em.

Another great vid mate. You are a wealth of information. I’m hoping my bike doesn’t need this when I get it back running again, seems like a lot of work

Great video Andy, I myself have had to work on my kawasaki, zr1100 engine, after it seized a couple of months ago it turned out to be the cam chain guide fell out the rocker cover and got chewed up in the crank...I'm waiting on parts from Japan. So once they arrive I will crack on...picked up a lot of tips off your self in the past and again now with this video...thanks for sharing.

Good info on the cam bearing screws. It seems I may have been fortunate on my two GS head projects. Replacing them is cheap compared to the cost of gaskets for the project. I did see these break on a project I helped with, but that bike had been allowed to overheat so badly the shim buckets were blue.
This thing is gonna be good when you're done with it.

    Hi
Love watching people work always so thing to learn no matter how many times you have done it yourself, will you be checking ring to groove clearance it has caught me out in the past with oil consumption. Keep up the good work

There will be an addendum to this video shortly, and yes you’re correct about the ring groove clearances being critical.

Met that bloke at handmade racers. I learnt today about the Cam bolts, never yet had a drama, but most of my motors have had low ks, the one I am building now, the cams are a bit wilder so I will take his advise. Be it better or not I am told Viton valve seals are the way to go.
I am using cometic head and base only because the bore is bigger.
I read an article from the states from when they dragged these back in the day and it said only when you get up to around 76mm do you need to use copper gaskets

I have Wiseco pistons, Cometic head gasket and viton seals in my XS11. The viton can handle higher temperatures without hardening.

Out of curiosity, should I go up in size for the valve guides? I am also working on a gs1000 and am having the same issues with the exhaust valves leaking oil. I want to try and do the work myself but not buy the wrong parts.

Breaking down a motor to this level would make me a nervous wreck.
