I had one in the early 80s, my first proper big bike. I loved it and we toured Europe on it (I'm in the UK) but eventually traded it for a Goldwing (1100). I kept the 'Wing for almost 20 years. I've been a Harley rider for 20 years now but seeing this really makes me want another GS1000, although the prices over here are quite high now because they have become a classic. Keep the great vids coming :-)

Me too...had an 850GS shaft drive, went all over Europe on it two up, then got the 1000GS, they were the dogs in their day....a friend here in France has just completed a nut and bolt restoration on one in cream / blue, he spent a load of money, but the result is fantastic. I'm still riding in my mid seventies, an XJR1300 a very similar bike to the GS, and occasionally still get the old GSXR out for a blast, but only when the wife's not around... Ride safe.

Funny how time changes your perspective. As a kid and teen in the '70s and '80s I didn't pay much mind to UJMs, as they were just so common. Instead I was more attracted to cruisers and sport bikes, but now that UJMs are far less common I realize how great they were. Neutral riding position, built for function over form, bulletproof, etc.

I started at our local Honda shop in 1975 and in 1979 the boss took on the Suzuki franchise and those are the first 1000 we got the service out a lot different than riding a Honda... like you can pass a 1979 CB750 Honda Supersport Honda topped out like they were parked...i just heard you say your wrench micro drilled the pilot jets...you got the right mechanic as I don't know any one else who knows that trick as that's what I did to as many as I could when customers complained about the cold starts as there where no jets available because the E.P.A. had already clamped down on all bikes for emissions and they where jetted for California and would barely start up cold and took for ever running on the coke ..so what I did made them a tiny bit rich using torch tip cleaners an reaming them out till the torch tip cleaner would slide through the mains and pilot , cut the top out of the air box and i made a two foot long 3/4 inch spike and drove it through the baffles in the stock muffler and then with two big vise grips wiggle and pound the spike back out and time for the RPM test ..and omfg vahavrooom

I had a 78 with spoke wheels back in 2000 I got it from the original owner with 6k on it an old guy that kept it covered its entire life. I did everything to it,, lowered, bars, seat, everything polished, painted emerald green pearl under black, bassani pipe 29mm smoothbores electronic ignition, for what it was it was very fast it responded very well to tuning, there wasn't a kz around that could get me and I had the first 60' and usually a few gears on most sport bikes on the road at the time (which was all ya needed when light to light street racing). Best two valve bike I ever had, loved it..
I had an 82 1100e also that got all the same treatment and more,, the 1000 was more fun though...

I don’t understand why the Z1000 series are worth so much more than these as the GS is an excellent road bike. I have one with updated suspension, sticky tyres and GPX600 brakes. Brilliant fun !

There are many bikes you can ride, but driving a Suzuki is pure fun

I recently bot a 1983 GS1100G (has shaft drive). Cannot get over how well it handles, like my old British bikes even though it is bigger and heavier. Far far better handling than the competing Yamaha XS1100.
