  • Tattoos can be weird. Sometimes they can be fine and then other times some of my lines on a few of my tattoos can be raised. I'm sure you have experienced this too.
But why is that? In this video, we briefly go over a few of the reasons your tattoo my be raised during the healing process or still be raised after months or even a year.
Let me know in the comments below if you have dealt with this before.

Thank You for explaining this.. I recently got a tattoo 1.5 months ago on my forearm and upper arm.. There are heavy lines and shading but I'm noticing the "heavier" lines they are raised.. I have been getting tattooed for years, always practice great aftercare and never experienced this.

Great video currently im not planning on going to a dermatologist because im pretty tatted and ive never had an infection. My current hand tattoo im pretty sure got prolonged in healing even sent photos to my artist. I got in the first week of august and now its sep 7. Im a custodian so i do have to wear gloves and me and my artist think it prolonged my healing because its raised and glossy. It almost has a scarred look but i don't think it will stay like that. Right now im using cortisone and just keeping it clean with pat drying. It peels hear and there but im just hoping soon that it will do massive peeling randomly lol. This is the first tattoo i had heal this long too its sooo annoying but for me aftercare is number 1. Only if we had a tattoo product that would assist in peeling lol

My aftercare was excellent, as my only tattoo is on my back and my wife took care of it, with a lot of her own experience.
Healing went smooth and I felt nothing beyond itching, when healing was irritating.
    My tattoo edging is raised.

Its not always an allergic reaction. I have three tattoos. My first two I got done had no issues and they healed perfectly fine but my third tattoo is having issues.
About a month and a half after I got my third tattoo, it started raising and itching in one part, next thing I know the whole tattoo was raising and it would get super itchy especially if I’m sweating or any clothing rubs against it. I finally went to go check with my doctor because little pimple like bumps were starting to form to and my skin was getting very irritated. You can feel and see the raised tattoo including the pimple like bumps.
My doctor told me i was getting these reactions mostly because the equipments used on me weren’t sterilized and clean. He also said if It were an allergic reaction, my skin would’ve reacted to it sooner already and I would’ve reacted to my first tattoo to which is true. I’m being referred and waiting to see a dermatologist to get a second opinion. Sucks cause the itchy creams I’m using only helps for a short time and my tattoo would start getting irritated again.
Always make sure and ask the artist if their equipments are clean and sanitize.

Thank you for explaining my now 3-month tattoo. I got bold lines done and it feels like they didn't heal properly. Like the skin didn't let go of the ink. And it looks all wrinkly. With little bumps. I have a feeling the tattoo artist went too deep. The shading healed great. But the Bold thick lines are still wrinkly. I love my tattoo but I don't because of the way it hasn't really healed. I did everything correctly for healing the tattoo. I'm just looking for answers

I have had a tattoo for many years about 5+ years .. The lady scarred me and I did everything right in the healing process .. Every now and then I get raised skin on the tattoo and the area is always hot when it raises .. Didn't think much of it but I'm not sure if I should go to a doctor or not. I ended up getting the tattoo re-done since the tattoo was terribly scar'd and I wanted it get fixed .. I needed to cover it up, but I get the same feeling on it since the scar's were so deep, I can still see through the cover up and it's raised skin - I'm pretty confused on the reaction, not sure if it's just allergic or it could be something else.

Is it a coloured tattoo? Certain colours can irritate sensitive skin. I know someone who had some red (I think) tattood on his leg, it's years old, but he said it still hurts sometimes.

I got a wolf tattoo a year ago & had no issues then just over 2 months ago i went back to the same tattooist & got the wolf coloured added pine trees & put some bats passing over an existing moon,
The weird thing is it healed well then about a month later only the pine trees & bats passing the moon raised up and got itchy...
    p.s no red ink...
I went to see my tattooist who was as confused as me as he said he had put the same ink in all parts of my tattoo...
It was itchy so i went to see my doctor who said it was a reaction to the ink & just looked confused when i explained explained the same ink had been put in all areas of the tattoo...
The doctor said there is nothing i could do & said it probably would be permanent. The itching has gone away but those parts are still raised 2mths & 10 days later...

I just got A tattoo four weeks ago and my tattoo artist said that he thinks my tattoo keloid how could I actually tell?
because he’s not sure some of my letters look puffy sometimes they do sometimes they don’t but when I originally got the tattoo the letters were very fine and thin and now that time have passed it became really thick I went to the clinic I was told from the doctor to take the antibiotics & To just apply it on their daily because it was kind of irritating me & not the actual tattoo but around the tattoo my skin was kinda red and the letters now at week 4 was still looking puffy but it still raises up every now and then but then sometimes look flatter then others Any suggestion’s?
Oh yeah The placement of my tattoo is my upper neck going down my spine and I’m African-American

He also asled about medication, I don't take any phamaceuticals except for a thyroid support. I went to a professional tattoo remover, not to remove anything, but for her input. She said she has seen elvation in tattoos where white is used due to the titanium dioxide. I am thinking to get into my dermatologist. I can not beieve I am the ony person this has happened to. And again, I am extensively tattoed and everything looks soft, and smooth except the white spots.I would so appreciate if you hear of anything that might help this, or any hunches you might have in your professional opinion. 😎
