    Phrygian Dominant is the scale to play when you want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

    I've been learning Dream Theater's Home by ear. I'm playing in this weird box, sounded modal and cool. similar to Phrygian but it was like a 5th mode of the harmonic minor scale. I had a nice little Eureka! moment when I realized THIS was Phrygian dominant. Really weird how raising the 3rd of Phrygian gives you a mode of harmonic minor.
    Thank God for this beautiful little contained system of music theory we have to play with.

    There are a few ways of understanding modes like Phrygian Dominant - the method that's helped me the most is to build them around the minor and major pentatonic scales.
    Dorian, Aeolian and Phrygian can be built from the minor pentatonic scale (meaning they will all have a flat-3rd) and adding either a major or minor 3rd and 6th:
    Dorian = Minor pentatonic + Maj 2nd + Maj 6th
    Aeolian = Minor pentatonic + Maj 2nd + Flat 6th
    Phrygian =Minor pentatonic + Flat 2nd + Flat 6th
    Ionian, Lydian and Mixolydian can be built from the major pentatonic scale (meaning they all have a major 3rd), adding either a major or minor 4th and 7th:
    Ionian = Major pentatonic + Maj 4th + Maj 7th
    Lydian = Major pentatonic + SHARP 4th + Maj 5th
    Mixolydian = Major pentatonic + Maj 4th + Flat 7th.
    Then Locrian breaks all of these rules, simply being the major scale with everything but the root and 4th flattened
    ( R + b2 + b3 + 4 + b5 + b6 + b7)
    I hope this helps someone, it certainly helped me a lot!

    "Exotic evil pharaoh sounding stuff."
    Priceless! I love your way of thinkin'. Stay weird.
    I play another scale quite a bit that I've just heard labeled "Indian Scale".
    It's a half and half thing in that it's 1 2 3 4 5 b6 b7 - putting it right next door to Phrygian Dominant. I've been fascinated with scales and modes for many years and how they evoke dramatically different moods so easily. "It's a long long way from Lydian to Locrian."
    Bonus question: Is it Lock-rian or Low-crian? I've always said it the second way.

    • @MrTubularBalls
      @MrTubularBalls 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the Dorian mode of melodic minor, also known as Mixolydian flat 6. Never heard it referred to as Indian scale. Which would be a misnomer anyway because 1) Indian music is based on ragas, not scales, and 2) there's no single raga that defines Indian music. There's a lot of ragas around, some quite weird sounding. There's one with both a major and minor 3rd, try harmonizing that!

    I like to think of phrygian dominant as the 5th mode of the harmonic minor scale.
    Take, for example, the A minor scale. To turn that into a harmonic minor scale, simply raise the minor 7th scale degree (G) by a semitone into a major 7th scale degree (G#)
    To turn this into phrygian dominant, start from the 5th note (E)
    E, F, G#, A, B, C, D, E

    I learned that arpeggio run from Alexi Laiho back in high school when their Stockholm Knockout Live DVD came out. He plays it during the solo section between him and Janne, the keyboardist. Like you said, it sounds super badass, but not as tough to play as it sounds. Once you get the shape into muscle memory, it's a fun one to mess around with and is a good one to keep in the ol' bag o' tricks.

    A lot of my students are metal-centric, they have often explored the Harmonic Minor already, and are pretty comfortable with it. They are also comfortable with power chords (root+5th). So I just explain that the Harmonic Minor and Phrygian Dominant are the same scale, and you just look at your power chord to find the Phrygian Dominant. So, if you wanna play in E Phrygian Dominant, make a power chord with E as the higher note and play Harmonic Minor of the lower note, then use your ears to learn which notes to land on. They seem to grasp it pretty quickly this way.
