Hey guys! Its your good buddy Uncle Ben Eller here with Weekend Wankshop 256!!
Have you ever wondered how the pentatonic shred masters like Eric Johnson, Zakk Wylde, Eric Gales, and Joe Bonamassa get so much shred milage out of the simple minor pentatonic scale? You're not alone! I've always loved the sound of those seemingly never-ending blues licks those guys bust out on the regular. There's a couple simple tricks all those guys utilize to achieve these signature sounds, and in this lesson, you're gonna learn them!!!
In this lesson, you're going to learn about some iconic sequencing phrases in the scale, plus a lick i made up in C minor for you to practice them. After that, we'll get into some of the picking secrets these guys use to rip through at blazing speed, and how they strategically phrase their licks for maximum picking success! These are easy things to implement into your playing to get you playing FAST through these things and help you create your own killer licks!
Playing my Suhr Alt T through the Fractal Axe FX III. Thanks for watching!!!

It’s always the same problem. You can only go as fast as your nervous system allows. 20 years ago I wanted to shred like Kirk Hamster and my hands just don’t work that fast. These tips really do a great job of explaining how to reach that limit that a tab just can’t. A hint of delay doesn’t hurt either 😝

Ben, I’ve been playing for 40 years.
    This instructional was huge.
I’ve been practicing this same lick now for 3 months daily, for hours…
Thanks for turning me on to Troy Grady, I learned my picking style is to escape on down strokes. I now start all my licks on upstrokes and I’m flying, it’s a little sloppy but getting cleaner at a rate that I should be clean picking in a month or 2, but without you revealing this lick to me, I would have been in the dark forever. Keep up the great work Ben👊

Every time I hear sequencing like this from people like Joe B, it always sounds super contrived and inauthentic- like he says “Okay, now it’s time for me to play my Eric Johnson exercise. Hey Ben, thanks for your interesting ways of using the pentatonic scale, also I’m a massive fan of Joe Bonamassa and Eric Johnson playing, thank you for explaining the lesson, very clearly, all the best, kind regards Louiee Lou from downunder 👍👍
