Basically, this is a super scale! It sounds beautiful with the chordal harmony, it's great for tension, AND it's more powerful as a 5 chord. Not many scales hold these combined qualities.
@@fretjamguitar dude your videos are the best. Amazing study, over my head. I am a Phrygian by birth. I have never had a music lesson, do not read music, but have created some awesome cd's on two keyboard synthesizers. I sat down to a keyboard synth, and in two hours I was amazed. Now I have two synthesizers.
This is the only channel that can somehow make exotic stuff applicable for me, thank you for your work. Your Lydian Dominant and Melodic Minor videos are absolute gold. It’s great that you explain how and where to use these scales while also teaching the theory behind it. These sounds are a lot more accessible to me when given actual examples of them in action.
I've learned quite a bit from these lessons in an hour or so. I will say after nearly 20 years of guitar, piano, saxophone and more. I feel like I know much less than I thought after seeing your content. Well done.

I have been playing for many years... I always ignored modes because it seemed like Greek to me.. this made it clear,... thank you... now it's just Phrygian to me!
Kind of lost me towards the end but this has definitely helped my understanding of scales, modes and it’s the best and easiest to understand content I’ve seen!
best video ever, why does the most forget to explain wich chords can be used in wich mode, you are the only one i could found, who explained it in deep :-) thank you thank you thank you so much ... and please ... moore of this :-)
I really like your approach to explaining scales. Also the "Hindu" sound. It's quite a refreshing break from all the diatonic stuff. I think minor really is happening since I discovered Swing.
D Phrygian Dominant in an art pop song: Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp (1970) by the great New York singer-songwriter Laura Nyro. The outro improv is sublime with jazz greats Richard Davis (Out to Lunch, Astral Weeks), Alice Coltrane and Joe Farrell creating Arabic, Chinese and Japanese sounds.

There isn't much sonic difference between the 7th and bII of this scale, that's probably the one hang-up I've always had about this scale, being one of my favorites. It's great to solo over because you don't really have to move around much, but you basically only get one "color" out of it if you don't have a vocabulary of inversions, extensions, etc.
That's an interesting point and my ears agree! I would say that's kind of how most modes are in terms of their harmonic potential. Modes by definition are restricted to a specific harmonic colour. That said, with phrygian dominant, I find the most striking use of it is when there is an unpredictable chord or key change. It carries a lot of tension and it can completely change the mood of a piece. But I also have a weak spot for the I7 to vii (e.g. E7 to Dm) movement. You hear this a lot in movie scores and it's very powerful. Throw this into a regular major key (e.g. C becomes C7 and then Dbmaj7 or Bbm comes into play) and you get a fresher taste of that phrygian dominant sound.
+Johnny Kirchens A lot of phrasing is about using bends, slides and other lead techniques. I do need to do more lessons on these techniques and I'm tempted to do my next lesson on bending to target notes.
Do the N6. i put it after the C ( b II) if you do just a Maj..it hits the leading tone of the harmonic minor. If you play augmented it goes into the Root of the relative minor. if you do dominant it hits the B ... From there..you can do Mix b2..or axis pitch between Harmonic Major and phrygian dominant...Or the Lydian b3 is over the natural/relative minor I got it going like this....G#...Then G# and F#....Then G#, F# and D#..hahahaa The b II (N6) (1,3...octive)also acts like a sort of leading into D harmonic minor. Kind of like the last mode of the harmonic minor..you can alter it into an Augment. Kind of like the Whole tone. it's totally cool all the scales work together.
I don't like it how sometimes the phrygian dominant scale is played as the same shape as the harmonic minor with the root note on the 5th note. Besides that small thing these videos are so good.
Prodigy - remix from the reggae song : I chase the devil (max Romeo and the upsetters) You find this harmony there. And the classic vibraphone kind of tune that relates to Phrygian dominant!
Very good lesson . Very well explained . where would I find a diagram of the complete phrygian dominat scale covering the whole fretboard , lets say in the key of A .
first start learning the position of chords, and then fingering, after learning all that, go to scales, then pentatonic, then triads, then CAGED sistem, then the circle of 5th, and then continue on your prefer diagram
@@tfwnoyandere That's a ridiculous way to see it, the Pentatonic scale is a shell over which any preference can be imposed and it is a really useful way to get into the modes, it is well worth learning and a guitarist will use it for life.
When a great guitarist uses this scale, you know the song will be epic.
Example is anastasia 🌝😬
When a great guitarist makes up his own and they sound way better, and only he can listen to it
Because East is the motherland of music
