    That;s totally sick. i heard that sound before...I didnt know people were phrygian dominanting the VI...Learn something new everyday. :-p
    You know me...I goof...then a light bulb gose in my head...G dominant and A dominant...I can go to D melodic from there...D minor and E minor. That's like
    the A natural minor. That's a new way of modulating the melodic minor in.lol

    • @oneeyemonster3262
      @oneeyemonster3262 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you put the phrygian dominant over the VI...it's totally cool because
      It's so much easier to modulate to the melodic minor because the only differnt is the b2 or maj2nd when you play the Mix b6....or you just play the
      C#. I find myself playing with ease using the melodic minor or I can simply
      play a D dorian if i want to go back the natural minor...Then modulate to
      A harmonic minor or E phrygain dominant...It's totally sick.lol

  • @StarDarkAshes
    @StarDarkAshes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the major third is what makes it a Phrygian dominant as opposed to just being Phrygian? This makes me wonder is there such thing as a dominant scale with a flat third? I don’t think so but if anyone can help clarify this. Or I’ll just have to do some googling I guess thanks

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the major 3rd distinguishes phrygian dominant from phrygian minor. Depending on how we are using the term "dominant", there can technically be minor dominant scales when the v (5th degree chord in a key) is minor. For example, with this progression...
      Cmaj7 / Dm7 / Gm7
      ...we might change to G Dorian to accompany the Gm7 dominant chord, so Dorian would technically be our dominant scale. Dominant can mean two things - a dominant seventh chord or as a reference to the dominant degree in a key (the 5 or V), the latter of which can be major or minor.

    • @mattdenninger
      @mattdenninger 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I just rewatched and you do say chord and show chords. But a major scales chords go 1 major, 2 minor, 3 minor, 4 major, 5 major (dominant 7 style) 6 minor, 7 diminished. I’ve really liked everything from you I have seen so far and I hadn’t really seen many videos where they talk about tension and chord function so I was extra paying attention at that part. I didn’t really get it my first time threw but did notice this mistake. Was hoping you could clear it all up! Thanks!

      Do the N6. i put it after the C ( b II) if you do just a Maj..it hits the leading tone
      of the harmonic minor. If you play augmented it goes into the Root of the relative minor. if you do dominant it hits the B ...
      From there..you can do Mix b2..or axis pitch between Harmonic Major
      and phrygian dominant...Or the Lydian b3 is over the natural/relative minor
      I got it going like this....G#...Then G# and F#....Then G#, F# and D#..hahahaa
      The b II (N6) (1,3...octive)also acts like a sort of leading into D harmonic minor. Kind of like the last mode of the harmonic minor..you can alter it into
      an Augment. Kind of like the Whole tone.
      it's totally cool all the scales work together.

    There isn't much sonic difference between the 7th and bII of this scale, that's probably the one hang-up I've always had about this scale, being one of my favorites. It's great to solo over because you don't really have to move around much, but you basically only get one "color" out of it if you don't have a vocabulary of inversions, extensions, etc.

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's an interesting point and my ears agree! I would say that's kind of how most modes are in terms of their harmonic potential. Modes by definition are restricted to a specific harmonic colour.
      That said, with phrygian dominant, I find the most striking use of it is when there is an unpredictable chord or key change. It carries a lot of tension and it can completely change the mood of a piece. But I also have a weak spot for the I7 to vii (e.g. E7 to Dm) movement. You hear this a lot in movie scores and it's very powerful. Throw this into a regular major key (e.g. C becomes C7 and then Dbmaj7 or Bbm comes into play) and you get a fresher taste of that phrygian dominant sound.

    Kind of lost me towards the end but this has definitely helped my understanding of scales, modes and it’s the best and easiest to understand content I’ve seen!

    D Phrygian Dominant in an art pop song: Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp (1970) by the great New York singer-songwriter Laura Nyro. The outro improv is sublime with jazz greats Richard Davis (Out to Lunch, Astral Weeks), Alice Coltrane and Joe Farrell creating Arabic, Chinese and Japanese sounds.

    Quick dumb question: Is Phrygian and Dominant Phrygian have same notes?

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phrygian has a minor 3rd. Phrygian Dominant has a major 3rd.

      Exactly! Or, that it's the most common and over-used scale in western music. I don't know, why are you asking me?

    Hi Thank you for Videos :) I have some question with Phrygian Dominant Scales.
    What scales would it be if seventh notes were not flat on this scale?
    " 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7 1 "
    like this?

    isnt "dominant" indicating that this scale is meant to be played on dominant chords rather than maj7? I mean it sounds cool when you play it here ... but it has a b7 as a scale... I dont understand aaaarhh please explain

    • @fretjamguitar
      @fretjamguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, it's a dominant scale. Not sure where I mentioned maj7 in this video, but by no means my intention to claim the scale works over maj7.
