Despite my warning, they bought the truck, and a few months later, it turns out the engine was warped before they bought it.
White smoke can also be a sign of failing pcv valve. When you change head or rocket cover gasket, it should be good practice to change pcv valve and grommet.
I'd recommend avoiding O'Reilly for any electrical components. I had purchased a tuneup kit for my Dodge. Three two-way coils. Coils sit atop the plugs on the driver side. Wires go to the passenger side. Bad rubber on the coil side insulator allowed spark through and prevented firing in that cylinder. Destroyed the catalytic converter on that side.
Mine had the same symptom. Starts hard when the engine is cold, sputters etc. I thought my engine was burning oil. Had it checked by a mechanic, they said that it didn't. I changed the oil, spark plugs, filters and what not, still the same. Checked the vacuum lines, no problem. EGR no problem also. Replaced the fuel pump, same thing. What solved the problem was the computer scan. It showed that my camshaft position sensor was busted. Changed it and now it runs like a dream again I could've saved a lot more if I had it scanned the first time.

I put my radiator fan on a switch on a 1990 Chevy Beretta I had. For some weird reason it just refused to work on its own. New thermostat, new fuse, everything I could think of. But it worked fine with wired straight in, so I just did that and installed a toggle switch on the dash. Turned it on while driving it and never had an issue. Cheap, easy fix for a really weird problem.

The problem with older Toyota cars is that you don't even know they're broken until it's too late. Some asshat drained all my oil once, I drove the car for a few weeks before I checked my oil and noticed it was completely empty. Fill it back up and it didn't leak so I just went about my day. It took over a month for that car to die from the damage it sustained. The thing is it ran fine until a cylinder blew.

So, in this video, the person is trying to diagnose and fix issues with a used car that they bought. They start by checking the spark plugs and the coolant, and then move on to inspecting the radiator and the cooling system. They also discuss the importance of checking the coolant level and the condition of the spark plugs before buying a used car. The video then moves on to a case where the car's coolant is leaking, and they demonstrate how to replace the radiator. They also discuss the importance of having a mechanic check the car before buying it, as they can spot issues that the average person might miss. Next, they talk about a car that overheats, and they use a pressure test to check the cooling system. They also discuss the possibility of a blown head gasket or a faulty thermostat. They then check the car's fans and condenser to see if they are working properly. Finally, they discuss a car with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) issue, and they demonstrate how to use a scan tool and a tire pressure gauge to diagnose the problem. They also mention the high cost of fixing the TPMS issue, and they recommend using a tire pressure gauge instead of relying on the TPMS. In summary, the video provides a step-by-step guide on how to diagnose and fix various issues with a used car, and it emphasizes the importance of having a mechanic check the car before buying it.
I have a 1995 Saturn wagon 124,000 miles, burns oil, shifts into 2nd, 3rd hard, 26 average mpg, paid 1800$ late 2021 with 116,000 miles and the transmission was smooth as ice when I test drove it, 3 weeks later it’s shaking the floorboard, I’m happy it’s lasted this long and hoping to make it till 2024

Another problem with the Toyota Corolla, is the yellowish/cloudy headlights. You should not ignore that because it makes it difficult to see at night as less light can shine through the lens. Also, in areas that require a safety inspection that could fail the inspection
@@phatgringo2.0 yup, when your car has jaundice it’s common practice to squeeze a few lemons in the oil and coolant to give your car the citrus vitamins it needs. It’s a very overlooked part of maintenance

Yep I bought a Toyota Camry 2013 standard edition with 200,000 miles on it from a private seller. After buying it and driving 50 miles, the check engine light came on and needs a new catalytic converter. And I paid way way too much for it about 6 months ago. But it was so pretty! 😍 Two mechanics told me that I shouldn't even worry about replacing the catalytic converter and just live with the check engine light on...? 🤷♀️

Super-Clever idea to resolve these annoying dead battery-powered TPMSs that are always in Scotty's videos: 1. Put a bracket with a permanent magnet somewhere on the wheel struts: Put a coil inside the TPMS. Every time the wheel passes the magnet, it charges up a few micro-amps. 2. Might be able to do the same thing with some kind of "gryoscopic" or motion-based component inside the TPMS alone... like Rumble Packs inside game controllers, only in reverse.

How do you take a used car to a mechanic to check out when you haven't bought it yet? If you're dealing with a stranger, why would they trust you with their car to take it some where to do who knows what to it unless they are willing to take the time to go with you? Any suggestions?
I learned something new about the tire pressure sensors from this video I have a 2010 subaru forester and the low tire pressure light won't go off regardless of how much pressure the tires have I'm not going to worry about it and just check my tire pressure manually
I found that with my previous car, the reason it didn't start very well was because it was made in Italy and I wanted to start it in -30 C. Turns out, the main problem was battery running out over the night, but I doubt the car would've liked being run so cold. So I built a shed for it. In the shed, I installed an electric heater.
Scotty is literally a legend , EVERYONE knows Scotty Kilmer and his love for his celica, a role model and Teacher for us unfortunately without one at home .
When I worked as an engineer with a couple of auto companies, finding and solving common warranty problems, I saw Chinese knock-off radiators palmed off as genuine radiators (obviously, replaced from front end crashes, and the panel beaters wanted to keep the cost down). To an untrained eye, they looked like the real deal, even having the correct supplier's name moulded into the header tanks, but were they good enough? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! They failed very quickly, and often the transmission oil coolers would crack, destroying the transmission and filling the engine full of ATF. They were an absolute mess! When the inlet spout broke off my radiator, I replaced the radiator with a genuine one. I had seen too many cheap and nasty knock-offs to risk buying cheap and nasty rubbish radiators!
No, there are small cavities that the oil travels thru to increase pressure in specific areas, like the crank and cam bearings. Flow rates can decrease to catastrophic levels of the oil is too thick. If the oil is too thin, the pump won't be able to move enough of the fluid because the tolerances in the pump are designed for a specific viscosity range. Basically, oil that is too thick will mimic the properties of a very dirty oil, which is what caused the damage in the first place.

Why would they have you check out a car with them to just disregard your advice. LOL
@@Winner3ty I guess they just really liked the look of the truck. 😅
how did you know it was warped?
White smoke can also be a sign of failing pcv valve. When you change head or rocket cover gasket, it should be good practice to change pcv valve and grommet.

I'd recommend avoiding O'Reilly for any electrical components. I had purchased a tuneup kit for my Dodge. Three two-way coils. Coils sit atop the plugs on the driver side. Wires go to the passenger side. Bad rubber on the coil side insulator allowed spark through and prevented firing in that cylinder. Destroyed the catalytic converter on that side.
Oh no. I just bought a AC fuse from them. It cost $50.00!
Changed it and now it runs like a dream again
I could've saved a lot more if I had it scanned the first time.

THANK YOU SCOTTY FOR YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC.
Am willing to pay for mechanic's advice if I could find 'A guy like you' that would truly go thru it like you do.
Mr Kilmer....you totally ROCK...WE NEED MORE MECHANICS LIKE YOU
Scotty, the thermostat opens to let the coolant flow OUT of the ENGINE into the radiator, NOT out of the RADIATOR.
And that is why I would trust you with any vehicle that I own or would purchase. Honesty is the best practice.
3 signs you car has a serious problem
It's on a tow truck, that you didn't call.
It's on the show cops while you're watching cops, and that isn't you driving it.

When I first started buying cars it was common practice to have a "Pit Boss" inspection done on a vehicle before buying it...nowadays it's rare to find anyone (even a mechanic) who knows what that means.
That was more insightful than 2 years at technical school LOL. Thanks my man!
Thank You Scotty for your honesty and integrity. 👍❤️👍
My favorite thing to do in this channel is hear the customer complaint and identifying the possible problems before he starts diag. Im at about a 90% success rate with the actual problem.
I have a 2020 Chevy Trax - it has 31,000 miles and the oil for it's fifth oil change is sitting right here in front of me.
I took it to a local Valvoline last time.... $116 for an oil change! 😡 I just checked it and my oil has NEVER been that dark.
Lesson learned - I will keep up on my oil changes now 🙄
I had the coolant start to boil on me two years ago when I had the balancer switched out on my 09 Dodge Nitro. The shop I had taken it to didn't rebook the cooling fan. Nitro is still running happy for that.

I just purchased myself an 08 Corolla and my heart sunk when it was diagnosed as an oil burner. I love mine so far. 98k miles with good service records. Hope i got a good one.
I had a coworker who bought one brand new in 2002. By 2004 it was leaving long blue smoke signals everywhere he went (then began rusting).
I remember this because a cousin who worked there had an imported from Germany VW with 400,000+ km and it had only recently begun smoking and the Corolla was something like 90,000km
I have seen this on repeat over the years
Corolla and blue smoke everywhere.
Almost never any from other Toyota models, just the Corolla
There were some dud Toyota engines due to faulty low tension rings from factory, Toyota released a revised ring kit to fix the problem but it requires tearing the engine down still

I would trust you because you’re the first mechanic I’ve heard bluntly say most of these shops are gonna screw you 😂 over as bad as they can as often as they can
Sometimes it's a sensor issue, the crank position sensor is the heart of the ignition system.

I once had a Honda Civic that burned a good half a quart or so of oil a month. Had about 300K miles on it. Engine fired up first try every try no matter how hot or cold it was. Ran great. Never let me down. The only issue was the smoke screens left behind at stop lights in the summer lol. Not sure how many miles it ended up getting since I sold it (I regret selling it).
Scotty is an incredible mechanic and he always does repairs from his driveway never a fancy garage.
I wish you are my mechanic... So hard to find one that is truly good but even harder to find one trustworthy... I am always afraid to let anyone work on my car. I took my car to the actual car dealership for a recall repair one time where to replace the part, they had to take off the front bumper. As a habit, I always check everything after I get my car back and I found that they didn't not even reinstall the front bumper correctly and this is the actual car dealership who works on nothing but that mainly that brand of cars..

I’ve been watching Scotty for years and i don’t think I’ve ever heard him cuss until now 😮
most likely issue if it runs different based on engine temp is intake air temperature sensor. your engine needs to know the air temperature for timing adjustments and fuel injector spray adjustments
I have a 2003 matrix an man it starts like a gem always doing maintenance on time just did all new plugs spark plugs oil change an some sea foam an she's running even smoother, engine is super quiet for the age of the car,
Another problem with the Toyota Corolla, is the yellowish/cloudy headlights. You should not ignore that because it makes it difficult to see at night as less light can shine through the lens. Also, in areas that require a safety inspection that could fail the inspection
Yellow means the car has jaundice.
@@phatgringo2.0 yup, when your car has jaundice it’s common practice to squeeze a few lemons in the oil and coolant to give your car the citrus vitamins it needs. It’s a very overlooked part of maintenance

No good having 100% lights with 30% eyes.
Thats the least of your problems a cheap $26 fix at Walmart
Heh, funny. In Finland that car would fail MOT (it's annual for cars over 4 yr old or something). Worn bearing is pretty much automatic fail - and if you fail MOT, you are not allowed to drive it, meaning we have to somewhat keep our cars in some sort of condition...
12:58 Funniest part of the video. The slow motion horror spillage and then quick cut to the next scene did it for me.
Completely agree - that killed me :'D

Yep I bought a Toyota Camry 2013 standard edition with 200,000 miles on it from a private seller. After buying it and driving 50 miles, the check engine light came on and needs a new catalytic converter. And I paid way way too much for it about 6 months ago. But it was so pretty! 😍 Two mechanics told me that I shouldn't even worry about replacing the catalytic converter and just live with the check engine light on...? 🤷♀️
Yeah cats in all honesty are non essential . Its only for emission purposes (filtering what you emit into the atmosphere) you’re totally fine driving it like that forever. Just stick a piece of tape of the engine check light so it doesnt annoy you lol

I don’t think there are too many sellers out there who would let a prospective buyer start dismantling the engine to get to a spark plug.
On a boxer engine maybe but most of the time it's right on top lolz no dismantling of engine
@@zacharypeery4082 Uh still, many parts have to be removed to get to the plug: engine cover, ignition coil, fuel rail (on some engines) have to be removed. Don’t think too many sellers would be ok with that.
Those wheel bearings are really poor though. It's a point of failure of road safety check in the Netherlands. It's driveable but they will get hot and wear down rapidly.

Super-Clever idea to resolve these annoying dead battery-powered TPMSs that are always in Scotty's videos:
I already own the patent

They aren’t just there to look nice they help reduce the engine noise in the cabin and keeps dust, water and other crap from getting all over everything also provides insulation for the engine on many models they put special foam like coatings on it for that reason.
Here I am watching this video while owning 2 corollas. My 03 is a 🗑 but it runs. The idle is crap. The transmission shifts slow. How do you take a used car to a mechanic to check out when you haven't bought it yet? If you're dealing with a stranger, why would they trust you with their car to take it some where to do who knows what to it unless they are willing to take the time to go with you? Any suggestions?
Canadian fan here! Just bought myself a 2013 Honda Fit with with only 60k miles because of your love and good advices for the car 😉
Used to have a client with a Mercedes that burnt 1 quart per 20 miles, that was fun.

Check your head gasket first and you might not want to change your radiator. Check for the white smoke out your exhaust pipe!
Always valuable and informative content, thanks a lot Scotty.
Thanks Scotty i have changed spark plugs on my diesel engine car and it runs great!
Love your videos. Could putting in a heavier gauge oil help the oil burning and engine start problems?
Scotty always says to always put in the oil rated for ur vehicle
No, there are small cavities that the oil travels thru to increase pressure in specific areas, like the crank and cam bearings. Flow rates can decrease to catastrophic levels of the oil is too thick. If the oil is too thin, the pump won't be able to move enough of the fluid because the tolerances in the pump are designed for a specific viscosity range. Basically, oil that is too thick will mimic the properties of a very dirty oil, which is what caused the damage in the first place.
