  • You may not know the name Willie Mitchell, but if you know the Rolling Stones, Al Green, Wu Tang, the Talking Heads or Kanye West you definitely know his music. Take a walk through his musical history with his son, Grammy winner, Boo Mitchell. Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell is a GRAMMY Award-winning engineer, producer, composer, award-winning movie producer and studio owner.
Boo is the son of legendary Hi Records and Al Green producer, Willie Mitchell. He began his storied musical career in 1987 at the young age of 16 honing his chops song writing and playing keyboards. His first paid session as a keyboard player was in 1988 on Al Green’s GRAMMY Award-winning “As Long as We’re Together.” That same year, he formed a rap group called the M-Team. The M-Team was the first rap group from Memphis to release a full length album. The M-Team was also Memphis’ first rap group to have a video played on MTV (Can You Kick It Like This).
In 2016, Boo won the Record of the Year GRAMMY for the Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars hit “Uptown Funk.” It was the first time a record made in Memphis has won a GRAMMY for Record of the Year. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Willie Mitchell is the reason for Al Green's great success as a singer, songwriter, and entertainer. He got Al Green straight in how he delivered a song. Willie Mitchell transformed Al Green. You hear, transformed! I have had the privilege of seeing Al Green in concert three times. Without Willie, we don't have the Al Green we are accustomed to. Willie's contribution to popular music has not been fully recognized as we learn in this TEDx talk by his son Boo Mitchell. I hope the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognizes one of the greatest in the music industry. I am glad that his son Boo is not allowing people to forget Willie, and is telling his story of one of the music greats.

I am college student and I try to play the guitar every now and then. When I found the album "Solid Soul," it changed everything for me.

I recently read the autobiography on Al green, and learned how Willie Mitchell was instrumental to the success of Al green, but I didn't realize how much his own music added or influenced popular, modern music. I became more in awe of Willie after reading the book, but he definitely needs to have his name and contributions recognized on a larger scale.. Kudos to his son for shedding light on his dad's innovative sound and how influential it has been to pop music!

Thank you for shedding some light on why Al Green’s early 70’s songs are incredible and gorgeous. Aside from Al Green’s highly developed ( with help from Willie Mitchell) natural talent.
