    • @andrewjones-productions
      @andrewjones-productions ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The charred wood is a Japanese traditional method of preserving wood on buildings. Not so common on homes here in Japan anymore but, seems to be popular overseas at the moment. It is called 'yakisugi' (焼杉) and means charred cedar. 'Yaki' is also used for 'grilled' as in 'yakitori' (焼き鳥), which is skewered chicken grilled over a charcoal brier and is very popular amongst Japanese and non-Japanese alike. Just like the chicken, the wood is only really surface burnt that provides a good seal from the weather.

    Andrew discovering the joys of european Tilt&Turn windows. Was trying to convince Jesse Muller into getting these when his home was in his early stages, which he actually had to for a few for firefighter entry reasons. But he also disclosed the absolutely insane pricing of these in the US (like 1000$+ per window) - in Europe they are ubiquitous for like 200€ per window.

    • @owlwithahowl7798
      @owlwithahowl7798 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah it’s probably the scarcity that drives the price in the us plus not meaning to offend anyone but the mindset for most American homes is one generation while in Europe the idea is to build for your children as well. But it’s mostly down to building materials.
      Though I think Andrews house is built for the next generation as well😂.

      Yup, its norrmal here for quality tilt and turn windows. But Europe and North America are different continents.
      A lot of our buildings are older than America...lol.
      Our building codes are more stringent than US ones, especially with listed or historic houses.
      In the US, the building's are usually rebuilt after 30 years.
      The US building codes reflect the 1950's building regulations that stipulate - you either live in a detached home in the burbs or a Condo in the city. If you look at pre-1950 houses in the cities, they were made of brick and were 4-8 storeys high. four to eight storeys are optimal living spaces for cities, it is a formula that nearly every city in the World uses, apart from the US.

    Another great video! The house is nice and the glass is great (and thanks to the homeowner for allowing us to see).
    I kind of like the charred siding; a very unusual look. It might resist the elements better than paint but the black surface surely would surely have a large heat gain, especially on the southern exposure, costing cooling dollars in summer. South side shading from trees or overhang would lower those costs. Using the overhang method on the south side would allow the low winter sun to add heat, so that would be best; trees would block that benefit.
    Thanks again for your time and effort recording, editing and posting these videos!

If you turn the handle on normal windows to horizontal position they open fully, and if you turn the handle fully up it works as a vent and it tilts only. And yes the sliding ones are extremely pricey around 5000€ (around 5400$) and more for one piece.

    Window manufacturer is an apprenticeship in Germany, Switzerland and Austria and takes three and a half years to become a journeyman, with a degree. The same applies to the profession of construction equipment operator. But this does not correspond to the car mechanic, because there is also a lot of car electronics taught. Three and a half years of teaching, then another 3 to 5 years in the profession until you can make the master. Then you could study at a university, as an engineer. By the way, electric welders need a professional examination every 2 years (Chamber of Commerce and TüV) whether autogenous, Mig, Mag etc. Without examinations one has the status of a semi-skilled worker and performs normal work without guarantee. ------- Here in Europe there is the "Wanderburschenschaft". These are skilled craftsmen such as locksmiths, cooks, immerleute, window builders, bricklayers, concrete builders and more professions. After 2 years and one day of hiking all over the world, on this hike you must never be closer than 50 kilometers from home. Once you have completed the "wandering", a faster master school is possible! --- Many wandering boys are traveling in America.

    They kept pulling pallets of windows out of this truck and I'm going geez how many windows does this house have damn?! That was a badass house. It didn't look that big from the outside but it was pretty big inside. Imported from Austria and took 6 months. I bet everyone was tip toeing around those then here come Andrew and saying oh that's no problem, I don't know what the big deal about these is. LOL! Gotta love Andrew's way of thinking. We'll have to see the house again when the other part is done Andrew. Neat short video! 👍

    Interesting wood treatment where they burn the wood makes it impervious to weather and pests I hear better than other treatments.

    • @aserta
      @aserta ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's also slightly resistant to fire, i wouldn't say fire proof as some people claim, but it is much better than even some treated wood faces (carbon is an insulator, if you carbonize a piece of toast without air, like you do when you're making charcoal, you could hold it on your hand and put a blow torch on it, and you won't feel it).
      And yes, pest and weather. Pests won't go near it, because it's pure carbon on the face (tho you wanna do every facet of the wood for that, especially at the bottom, in this video you can see some bare wood between the joints, and pests would go in there) and they don't eat that, and it is indeed resistant to water and rot because there's no passage between the natural wood under the carbon and the carbon face.
      There's a special process where you oil and carbonize the wood, and it becomes even more resilient to rot, pests and nature... but it does become flammable in that instance on account of the oil.
      Source: this is how i treat all the wood that goes into ground and i have posts that are nearly 16 to 18 years that aren't showing any sign of rot or decay.

      It is an old tech that Japan has used for a very long time. This vs other siding offers really nothing more. Its siding and if the siding is not protected it will wear out over time. The best protection is larger overhangs which help to prevent weather from eroding it.

    These kind of windows are very common here in Scandinavia, though not at this size and I think in large part sof Europe. They have existed for a long time but in the last decade or so have become more of a household item and not just for the upper crust. Triple pane glass are excellent at keeping your house warm.

    Andrew, you should go into the window-import business... I manage the other end in Germany and Austria. Great products at reasonable prices because Dreh-Kipp-Fenster (swing-tilt) and Hebe-Schiebe-Türen (lift-slide doors) has been the standard over there for decades and they have it down to a T.

    Welcome to California. You know how many of those sliders and the styling of that house we've been doing? I guess it's a thing now. I do like the sliders though. And this dude's house isn't a concrete tomb. As a painting contractor I do question the water resistance of the siding. Lots of Tyvek! haha Nice work Andrew!

      They could be Austrian and he purchased them in the States from a high-end supply house. We have all kinds of stuff from around the world that consumers don't personally import - SubZero appliances for example.
