Hi Prof Mew, My name is Ricco at 21 I had maxilla and mandible surgery. After my operation my orthodontist was unable to fully correct my bite and I was discharged by the NHS. My front bite was correct but side bites crossed, upper inside lower. Shortly after my treatment my teeth began to relapse. 5 years after now with a partial front cross bite I began private treatment with a private orthodontist. He believed could correct my bite with braces without surgery. It took 3 years to correct the front bite however he was unable to expand the upper bite to match the lower. I was left with a better result than achieved by my NHS orthodontist. However despite wearing retainers religiously as before my teeth began to relapse again. I sort the advice from a different orthodontist who took scans and molds to measure possible teeth expansion. He has now confirmed that it was always highly unlikely to fully correct the upper side bite. He has said the upper pallet is too narrow and has recommended sarpe surgery and expansion. I found your videos and I was absolutely blown away by your teachings a revelation. Initially upset I didn't have access to this knowledge before being cut open and screwed back together. I decided to begin aware I was limited my aim was to correct tongue posture and strengthen jaw muscles. I incorporated excercies and stretches while seeing a chiropractor and physiotherapist. My tongue is very large and my pallet doesnt accommodate well but its an improvement. I am left not knowing how to proceed. I truly believe in your methods however I am also aware I still have the screws in my maxilla. I know its impossible to go any further with them still in place. Due to my microdontia and hypodontia (at 38, I still have 2 baby teeth), I have severe underbite problem that was not recognized and rectified earlier in my life, I now have what’s called the Witch’s Chin. And another problem I had was grinding off my inner cheeks and biting of tongue during my sleep. I wake up with bleeding mouth and a lot of pain in my jaw. I have recently started my orthodontic journey and have seen drastic changes in my bite. Once the teeth are in place, I’ll need implants to ensure I have less missing teeth. However, I’m nowworried about the impact of braces in the long run.
bro i have a qn to ask you I’m 16. I had orthodontic treatment last year, got permanent metal retainers on my front teeth as well as nighttime retainers. Recently discovered mewing and stoped wearing my nighttime retainers. My top jaw has become wider so that retainer no longer fits. I’m not sure if my teeth will become crooked again without the retainer, should I keep wearing them at night? If I can stop wearing them, shall I get my metal retainers removed as well the front teeth can also widen?
@@Saksham2134 I did the same as you, ditched retainers and since I have good oral posture and good diet etc. my teeth didn't go crooked. The only downside is that I have a gap between my two front teeth now (because my top jaw has more space than before) but my teeth are not crooked. It depends on how crooked your teeth were before braces and on many other factors. My teeth were not that crooked before I got braces (had them for 1 year), it would have been better if I never got them and just focused on having good oral posture and diet/lifestyle. Mewing won't work with a fixed appliance because the teeth will want to move and the retainer will stop any movement. If you retain the lower set of teeth, they will not match with the other if there is any jaw expansion in the top jaw, which could cause bite issues. As you are only 16 you probably have quite a bit of jaw growth potential left, it might be worth getting rid of the retainer if you are confident that you have the mewing habits down. What I will say is that it's probably a good idea to at least keep your retainers on for 6 months following orthodontic treatment so that the teeth can properly set in their new (straight) positions, it will give you a better starting point to then start mewing. Don't get rid of your retainers before the 6 month mark, you'll waste any benefit the orthodontic treatment gave you. Use that 6 months to develop proper oral posture.

Hi there. I'm no orthodontist- but if you are happy with your new smile, wearing your retainers is the best course of action unless you want your teeth to revert to their previous positions, especially if you just finished treatment. If your teeth have shifted already and you are concerned, you should consult your ortho asap and tell them what has transpired. At 16, most people have too little life experience to fully comprehend the value of treatment time and cost: orthodontics are quite time consuming and expensive! Consider that not all parents can afford orthodontia for their children- gosh, some people even grow up without regular dental evaluations. You are fortunate to have had braces :D Obviously every case is different, but in my experience, ortho accelerates the refinement of the bite and smile exponentially faster than mewing and retention is a major part of both treatments (retainers also cost money). While fascinating and logical, the mewing trend exploded dramatically during the pandemic while access to dental services became limited and untenable to many people. Most popular TH-cam influencers put out 1 or 2 videos discussing mewing to ride the wave of trending topics, but those who follow through report it takes years to see improvement, yet the results are not nearly as evident as ortho.

I have had braces twice, it is a shame it is forced on kids before they can even think for themselves. Mewing works, but it is important to know that vitamin structure is VERY important for facial structure, especially vitamin D and K. In fact, many times a "receding hairline" is just an expanding forehead, caused by these vitamins being low. In fact almost everyone you see is affected to some degree, your forehead is supposed to meet the top of your head at a 90 degree angle, but almost no one has that where I live.

They don't understand what mewing is then... you just put your whole tongue on the roof of the mouth without any more pressure. not only the tip but also the 3rd back. If you have an intermolar width of less than 30mm, you need expansion because the whole tongue wont be able to fit

Can mewing damage your brain by applying pressure on it? I’ve read some stories and that’s why I stopped mewing.
@@theterriblepuddle1830, well I definitely could feel pressure on my forehead when mewing , so I took the precautions. Better safe than sorry
They don't understand what mewing is then... you just put your whole tongue on the roof of the mouth without any more pressure. not only the tip but also the 3rd back. If you have an intermolar width of less than 30mm, you need expansion because the whole tongue wont be able to fit
The pressure on your forehead is the shape of your bones changing.
@@theterriblepuddle1830, human skull is designed to protect against such exterior damage, not against interior pressure
@@wserthmar8908based on that statement of yours, I think you already have brain damage.
