  • Vincent Odogbor, a prominent public official and the Senior Special Assistant on Mass Mobilization to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to leverage his leadership to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to immediately reduce the fuel price. Odogbor argued that the recent increase in the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, has caused severe hardship for Nigerians, with prices exceeding N1,000 per litre in many parts of the country.
Speaking in Asaba, Delta State, Odogbor urged President Tinubu to review the fuel price to a range of N300 to N400 per litre. Many motorists and commuters across Nigerian cities are unhappy with the hike in petrol prices, which now range from N970 to N1,100 per litre. According to a report by Vanguard on Tuesday, September 10, Odogbor lamented that the fuel price increase has further exacerbated the difficulties faced by those in rural and riverine areas. He stated that the Nigerian people could no longer endure the hardships brought about by President Tinubu's policies.
In his statement, Odogbor emphasized that businesses are closing down, and organizations are laying off workers due to the high cost of operations. He highlighted that the suffering from this "fuel sting" affects all levels of society, including senior citizens, people with disabilities, students, children, and the poor and vulnerable. He appealed to President Tinubu, saying, "I join other concerned Nigerians in urging you to reverse and review the price of PMS to 300-400 naira, so Nigeria’s workforce can be effectively mobilized towards prosperity and economic stability."
President Tinubu, however, suggested that the recent fuel price increase, along with the resulting high costs, was unavoidable. Addressing members of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization in China (NIDO China) and the Nigerian community at the China World Hotel, he insisted that these "reforms" are necessary. He added that if Nigeria hopes to achieve growth similar to China and other developed countries, its citizens must be prepared to endure the current hardships.
