Installing a Distributor and Electronic Ignition in a Farmall 560

- Alan's brother, Paul, has been dealing with issues with his 560 starting. A viewer of ours, Brian of Muffler Delete 101, offered to put together a distributor with electronic ignition for us and mail it to the farm. This video is showing the installation on the tractor along with a new coil and wires. Brian made videos of him going through the distributor so definitely check his videos out.

That'll be like a new tractor. Hit it with a timing light and readjust the carburetor, you'll be good to go. Be careful not to leave the key on while it's not running, it can burn up the ignition module. Happy motoring!

wanna wake that 560 up install 301 out of 715 combine less gas way more hp i never put carbon wires on tractors they dont hold up nothing sounds better than 6 cyl ihc good seeing the kids out

Best part of your videos: listening to the kids chatter in the background and their questions. My son was 6 yrs old when I walked by the shop and saw his wagon - jacked up with the wheel off. He had pulled a small floor jack over to the wagon and found the tools to take the wheel off. Hmmn, go figure.

all the latest equipment. Good to see you got some help from others that still like to keep the old farm machines working to do your farming.
Runs like a top now! My brother and I farm with all Farmall and International tractors. My Dad's first tractor was the 560 diesel we still have and also have a gas 560 to. The gasser is a little fussy once in awhile.
I totally agree with you on the ratcheting wrench’s
While it shows dark smoke while accelerating in rpms, that stuttering and stall indicates lean mixture on revving up. I don't think these carbs have an accelerator pump to juice the mixture when you step on the accelerator but I think the engine was just still not warmed up. Sounds perfect in all respects on video so should work very well even in very cold weather.

I keep an eye on Squatch 253 in the Finlayson area. Caterpillar/crawler hobby. He and his dad rebuilt their Farmall last year. Steiner was a source of parts. And they use Hermantown Radiator as well. 👍

My 460 did the same thing. My issue was I had a partial blockage in the sediment bowl throat I would call it. When I pulled the choke out it ran better but under a load or trying to snap the throttle it would kill it.

Yes,,I think it may be a carb issue now also,,clean and adjust may be all it needs.
We have the electronic ignition on an M,460 and 560. Really like it, they’re not as cold natured with it.
Nice running 560! I'm more into diesel myself, I don't spend much time with gas tractors except when helping friends these days. I've been watching a 560 for sale near me, its a diesel and I think the guy is just a little too high on the price. I can run a haybine with my Fordson Major, but a little more power would be nice.

We had some issues with the hydraulics on this 560, in the cold, because it had moisture in the oil and would ice up the filter, changed the oil and filter and it has been working good.

Sorry, I just saw this comment. I think the ignition was $150, the coil was like $50. I don't remember how much the wires were. Brian at Muffler Delete 101 did it for me.

What kind of gasoline do you use in your gas tractors? is it 100% gasoline or does it have ethanol, a neighbor uses a lead additive for his M farmall

Enjoyed the video, Im working on a 606 loader tractor, bought it non runing. I think I fried the electronic modual, it went to smoking when I turned the key on. Mine doesnt have that magnet under the rotor , or the special plug wires. dont you need resister ?
Nope, they told me no resistor, I also put a high proformance coil, I left the key on once and melted the coil, almost burned the tractor down.
I didn't change the whole distributor, but know it acts like it's out of time and I've double checked everything ....?
Send a comment to Brian at, muffler delete 101 on you tube, he's the one that built this distributor, and might have some ideas for you.
I'd rather work behind a gas instead of diesel, we only used tractors for light logging for firewood, post hole digging, driveways light pto work. Last tractor we had was 1978 David Brown, 38 hp, dont remember #.
New electronic ignition makes a world of difference. You commented on the ratchet wrench 🔧 while using it. You’re right, they are 👍. Now to get new ignition for the skid loader.

Carb kit probably wouldn't hurt but I'm a sucker for trying seafoam first too lol
One thing to mention is that the little slot headed screw by the tachometer drive input is made to turn out and put in a grease fitting. This lubricates the distributor drive shaft bushings. It only needs a few pumps of grease yearly. The screw in installed originally to prevent over greasing.

Well I've had two six cylinder farmalls building the same block I think one was a triple six gas the other one is a 460 gas and I've noticed it both of them when they're not under load you crack the throttle they want to falter a little bit but once they pick up in the governor kicks in they'll smooth right out I just kind of think it's the nature of the beast my old 4 cylinders don't do that and of course my diesels down but we get service out at 460 and we did when we with triple six we had it I wish the best hard to be an old Farmall
Back the load screw needle valve on the bottom of the carburetor out 1/4 turn at a time until the stuttering stops.
My brother was very good a trouble shooting these older gas tractors also, nice fix to all! At the end, Allen was by the calves, how did the cows get ceiling dirty?
The ceiling has some rusty spots from the moisture.
I watched the video on Muffler delete 101 I am going to do the same to our Farmall M. Let you how it goes. Very good channel. Have your kids started to tear things apart with wrenches playing shade tree mechanic. If not give them time LOL.
They like to look through the scrap pile to see what they can put together...or take apart lol!
