  • SHOULD YOU USE LONGER SHAFTS IN YOUR GOLF CLUBS!?DOES HAVING LONGER SHAFTS MEAN MORE DISTANCE IN ALL YOUR GOLF CLUBS? We all want to hit longer golf shots... what's the easiest way of hitting the golf ball further? is it by increasing clubbed speed? increasing ball speed? and potentially hitting all your golf clubs further? the big debate recently has been about driver shaft lengths, Bryson DeChambeau was testing a 48 inch driver shaft at the masters in an attempt to over over power the golf course and shoot lower scores. it didn't quite work this time... so how much difference does having longer golf clubs make? longer shafts in your golf clubs... should you do it? lets find out... and lets do it now!

    I’m 6’2” n lengthened my irons 3” over standard. This has really helped my back. It promote a lateral turn covering the ball instead of the drop down under and lift up motion with a lot of back leg push.

      Really interesting to hear this. I'm 6'1" and weigh 90kg and have more steroid injections than I care to remember, followed by microdiscectomy surgery at L5/S1 and sacroiliac joint fusion surgery and although I now walk 6km five days a week and swim three times a week, bending is not something my back likes and it can flair up from time to time resulting in the usual symptoms for someone like me, e.g. spasm, nerve pain down the leg etc etc... but these are short blips thankfully
      I'm 46 and stopped playing golf 10 years ago due to back pain, which the surgeries have now improved. I was playing off a handicap of 15 when I very very very reluctantly admitted defeat and quit the game due to pain that became both chronic and unmanagable. My clubs were 2nd hand regular spec off the shelf clubs and always felt too small for me in hindsight.
      Now I'm keen to start golfing again, and have practiced hitting a few balls with a 4 hybrid (i.e. long club) with a changed swing, i.e. using a lateral turn as you describe.
      Can you tell me what clubs you are using please? what shaft flex and weight etc? are the clubs all one length? where you got them etc please?
      I've gone for a club fitting which was a waste of time as the club fitter didn't get someone with requirements like mine, i.e. he was just saying, yeah you need +1" senior flex graphite with standard lie angle. This may be correct for my swing speed and my dimensions etc, but it's not correct when viewing the golfer as a whole, i.e. a +1" 9 iron is still too short for me to be comfortable. Getting out playing the game once a week is my priority, not getting a low handicap or shooting great scores, playing 18 would be like winning the lotto after the years of pain and sleepless nights I enduring before the final sacroiliac joint fusion surgery. In the worst nights of pain, after being poked and prodded like a lab rat, when at times I felt like giving in and felt like accepting the Oxy the doctors prescribed me (which thankfully i never did), what kept me going was the pure determination that I would walk pain free again, that I would swim again and that I would golf again and I wouldn't stop until relentlessly trying, pushing doctors to think outside the box, until eventually after years the sacroiliac joint surgery gave me my life back. Therefore the likes of +3" really interests me as this sounds like just what i need. Really appreciate any info from you (thanks if you had had the patience to read this far!!!)

    Great suff! great topic...conflicting data on google saying anywhere from 1 inch =1 mph (=2yards) to another saying 1/2 inch =1.5mph (3yards)
    Debunks the great marketing push to appeal to the power hungry consumers and selling longer shafts. Studies also say you may gain minimal club head speed but your smash factor will most certainly go down giving you less distance (the longer driver is harder to hit in the sweet spot time after time). The same study said most golfers should not be using a driver over 45 inches.
    Many men pros don't go over 45inches on their driver...cam champ44 1/4 hovland 44 3/4 fowler went from 44 3/4 to 43 1/2 and still hits it 300 .

      I gamed the Sterling one length irons and was fitted for them and I had one hell of a time with the 8-SW irons, no matter what lie angle they were bent to, I still pulled all shots left by 10-30 yards, and the shorter long irons were a bit shorter distance than my standard length irons I normally played. I was really consistent with the 7-4 irons , but struggled with the short irons, I played them one season and went back to my old standard length irons.
      Not saying they are bad for anyone, as one of my playing partners actually went and bought the Cobra one length ( after hitting my Sterlings ) and he improved his game and still plays them after 3 seasons!

    Wonder if shorter shafts (PW length for numbered irons) would give same distance as before but straighter shots (more control like the PW). Also, I brought out my chipper based on last week's video. Today, I found normal grip (not putter grip) seemed to get better results. I like that it goes straight if you focus on hitting the centre of the clubface. I am keeping it in my bag for now, losing the 58 degree wedge. As with most equipment and training aids, there are no instructions telling you how to hit it properly (how far should you hit the chipper from the hole, what distance range is it good, putter grip or normal grip, etc.). Of course, you test it out at the end of the season when the snow is about to come.

  • @stephencoffey4705

    This indicates that the one length club system should definitely work as seen in the cobra sets

    • @chrissellings
      @chrissellings 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great minds think alike. So if you get more spin from the short irons I'd would equate that the long irons in the one length would have less spin so go further or just as far as a normal length long iron, but because of the length would be easier to control even with reduced spin. And the one ball position would surely help consistency.

    • @boydgrandy5769
      @boydgrandy5769 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gapping on the longer clubs is an issue with single length irons. Same length, stronger lofts, same swing speed (because the clubs are all the same length) results in lower flight with clubs above 6 iron (i.e. 5, 4) with the same ball speed as the 7. Do the math; you'll find that the longer irons don't carry much further, if at all, and the difference is runout because of the launch angle and lower spin.
      To make them work, you need to cultivate a much faster swing speed, which may or may not be in your particular tank.

    • @chrissellings
      @chrissellings 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@boydgrandy5769 it certainly is in my tank! I love hitting the ball hard when I have to. My mate says I'm scary long when i have to be. That's good info about the longer irons. I play really windy conditions on my home course so lower spin might be good. I've already considered 4,5&6 iron skipping the 5 iron and having stronger loft on the 4 iron so i can play extra wedge plus carry my 2 iron and hybrid.

    i think not for the shorter player. all it does is create more lag time in the swing. it might help the tall boys some what, but not enough to tell the difference. muscle gain and flexibility are key factor, however your average weekend golfer isn't going to shed that "beer keg" anytime to soon, to take advantage of the long stick's distance capabilities. but what do those with all their clubs the same length think according to how tall they are?

    I’m 6 ft put .5 inch longer shafts in my irons because I’m tall. On track man it gave me up to 10 yards more carry through the iron set. From carrying my 7 iron from 150 to 160 yards in MP32’s. My new set I went with p790 & wow those things go miles. Gave me another 15 yards they’re power bats. Up to 175 carry then with 7 iron. Im low figures play off 6 hcp I’ve had my irons lofts reset now to retro lofts. Reason being I don’t want to carry a 7 over 160 yards what’s the point.? It just means problems with gapping & having to put more wedges in my bag. I do find though a lot of high handicap golfers have that mentality about distance. Wanting to cream their 7 iron 190 yards. It’s a big ego thing with them for some reason. They wouldn’t dream of choking down on an 8 low spinny shot 135 yard par 3. Instead they’d rather rip the granny out of a 50 ballooning in the air and end up in a hazard but claim the win because they hit a 50 just as far as your 8. It’s ridiculous really, makes me laugh. That’s why they’re sh*t 😂 ego gets in the way of them progressing. I can see a lot of high hcp golfers fitting 3 inch longer shafts in their irons willing to lose control for distance,

    Lengthening an iron 1-1/2" may or may not increase clubhead speed. It makes the club swing a lot heavier. My irons are 1-1/2" overlength, but I use X-flex graphite shafts to keep the weight down. I don't hit it farther. I am way more accurate though. Plus my bac doesb't hurt. By the way, since standard length fits you, the lie angle will be too upright for you aqt 1-1/2" overlength. • @chilehead101

    what i take from this is the 3 mph extra speed. You can then tweak shaft and loft to get the optimal launch and as long as you can handle the extra length you gain about 8 -10 yards on each club

    • @JamesRobinsonGolf
      @JamesRobinsonGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I agree, but tweaking loft would move away from the shaft length argument wouldn’t it? Definitely a lighter shaft would have helped

    • @chilehead101
      @chilehead101 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesRobinsonGolf I agree, if you just want to add length to a club and not change everything else to dial in your launch and spin that is a recipe for disaster as you proved in this video. But my guess is if you manipulate loft and keep the extra length your can drop your spin to around 9500 and have a functional PW. either way I don't think people should do it based on dispersion issues. keep up the good work

    I do not understand why you want extra distance with irons particularly shorter irons. The 5 iron through to sand iron are pin placement clubs; not clubs of distance. Longer driver shaft within reason; Ok because all your trying do do is hit the center of the fairway. Fairway woods and long irons; maybe ok because your mostly trying to just hit the center of the green.

That feeling has made less compelled to watch your creations. Hope that clears it up.
