  • LONGER SHAFT OR SHORTER IN YOUR DRIVER, Mark Crossfield changes the shaft in his TS3 driver and talks about if there are any more yards to be hard with a longer golf shaft. If you want to hit longer drives and send you driver further down the fairway can using a longer shaft help you find those yards. See as Mark attempts to squeeze the most out of his driver with a longer shaft.

    Forever Drivers were 43.5 in length. I had a 7 degree TaylorMade Driver and a 12 degree Driver as a 3 wood. Sported a 4 HDCP. The distance loss of my recently cut down driver is minimal. I’m playing from more fairways and less from the rough and trees. Currently using a 44 inch Ping. Golf is both more enjoyable and fun shooting lower scores.

    Excellent video. As ball speeds are now hot across the entire face, strike location is relatively less important allowing for longer shafts and increased distance. Upside potential with a longer shaft now exceeds the downside risk.

    Mark another great video on driver shaft lengths. Yes I agree with you that longer driver shaft lengths equals more distance, but for me they are less forgiving. I have had an inch and a half removed from my driver, which I find is far more forgiving. I always carry my golf sat nav which accurately measures distances, I have always thought that longer shafted clubs are less controllable that is why I had my driver shaft cut down. I do agree with you that longer shafts equals more distance but it is a question of accuracy and I find my cut down driver shaft perfect for my game. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Keep these excellent videos coming and I will always watch them.

    I had my TS3 made to 45' instead of the usual 45.5'. I have used a 45' driver shaft for years and that's what I am used to seeing. I even gripped down the longer shaft in my fitting so it suited my eye. I am also 6,3ft and play my irons +1/2. Personal preference plays a part obviously.

    Mark, you failed to discuss the dispersion which was better both average and extreme with the longer shaft in your case. So the 3 or 4 yards difference in length will make little or no difference to your next club selection or shot type but being on the fairway or not certainly could. I say "in your case" because many are advocating shorter driver shafts for accuracy and I often don't see better accuracy.

    I have been trying this for the past 2 months, I have a 95 - 100mph swing with my driver, and the shaft is a Project X 6.0 at driver length and the same from a #3 fairway wood and have found that the driver is about 10-15 metres longer with a wider dispersion and the #3 wood shaft is a lot more central to the fairway.

    Great vid and coincidentally I tried a driver epic flash with an inch shorter shaft in it yesterday (that’s what they had in the demo club in the shop), for me it straightened out my shots and gave me a bit of a draw shape, distance was a bit further than current driver, a few yards but didn’t measure exactly. The big difference was the shot shape, I have a slight fade normally but the ball flight was more piercing, this has left me with a bit of a decision to make now, not what I expected really!!!

Now, it can't beat my 3w and really has no place in my bag. 6 yards may not sound like much, but that's half a club. How many times are you between shots? Also, +6 yards from that, work on a faster swing for another 6 and you got a full club. Size does matter in golf it seems :/

    Your swing is text book so I think that you would hit good shots with almost any length driver. However, I have seen a number of postings/videos by fitters who have stated that average golfers may benefit from slightly shorter length drivers because it gives them a bit more control, resulting in better strikes. And as you state all the time, strike is king. I know you have raised concerns in previous videos about how manufacturers were going to longer shafts in drivers and fairway woods.

  • @SCDrJ03
    @SCDrJ03 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Look, shaft length should be a fitting parameter for the individual player, not just that’s “standard”. Of course Mark is a skilled player and he’s not going to spray it all over the course with a slightly longer driver, but if you can’t deliver center contact with the longer one, try shorter! Most high end clubfitters are starting at 45 and moving up or down per the skill of the player at handling that shaft. I think the bigger point is don’t be married to the “stock” length. I ordered a 2017 M1 driver with a different shaft than stock and it comes at 45.5 and they don’t adjust swingweight so it’s D7. Guess what it’s hard to swing that! Half inch shorter and lighter and it’s easier for ME. Others may vary. Swing the longest stick you can keep in the fairway reliably.

    Very interesting. Titleist’s standard length has been 45” for some years as others have gone up and up (45.75 for ping, 45.5 for Callaway and TM but both have been at 46 in the past) and I have even seen info on their website saying they would not go above that because their tests show that on average it starts to break down above this for accuracy (accepting your experience that it is player specific). Does this mean they have retested and found the extra .5” doesn’t affect it, or are they now playing the launch monitor game with their new speed tag line? I’ve watched you use the standard ping, standard TM and standard Callaway (I’m assuming probably correctly that you dont ask for custom length), and 10 years of video evidence shows no change in your accuracy so clearly these extra fractions of an inch make no difference to you.

    One of the pieces of advice I've read over and over is: Know the actual length you can hit each club with reasonable consistency, and play to that. I can get a 175 yard carry from my 6 iron, yet it's my 160 yard club, because that's the length I know I can make almost every time.
    You managed to hit 267 on only one of four drives. Take that one drive away, and you have at best a 3 yard advantage with the longer shaft, but for all practical purposes, they're pretty much the same. If you were out on the course and had 266 to carry a hazard, would you go for it, knowing there's a 75% chance of losing strokes (not to mention a US$4 ball)? I would, but I'm an idiot.
    The real question is, though, for a golfer of lesser ability (say, for example, me), can I get a better strike and tighter dispersion with a shorter shaft? I'd be interested if you could grab a middle handicapper and run the test again.

    • @brendanhanley2424

      Exactly! If you look at the specs of new clubs, esp irons, you see the length increasing and the manufacturer saying it's a more powerful club. Which is obviously bullshit given how much they reduce loft and increase shaft length

    Shafts on Titleist drivers are only 1/2 inch longer than they were last year. When the Taylormade tour van rolled into New York around 10+ years ago, they fit n
    me for an r7 Superquad and told me that I should play the shaft at 44”. Since then I’ve been chopping all my driver shafts and getting more control, but recently went back to 45” figuring that TS2 would give me the @Straightest Balls in Golf.” My fairways hit hasn’t suffered any at all. 👍

    45.5 is still shorter than 90% off most drivers on the market!
    A longer leaver does not always mean more speed. It completely depends on how the player reacts through strike & speed.

  • @isdos
    @isdos 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Years ago, MyGolfSpy did an experiment about shaft length: mygolfspy.com/mgs-labs-is-longer-really-longer/
    Results were basically that most of the players benefit from shorter shaft because the accuracy is much more better and potential distance loss is so minimal. And many of the testers actually gained more distance as the strikes were improved with shorter shafts.
    I'd love to see this therory proven correct, or incorrect with modern launch monitor such as GC Quad. Of course test persons would be also average golfers with bad strikes/swing.

Didn't mention that in their marketing... and you didn't pull them about the longer shaft like you used to when a certain brand did the same and claimed more speed/distance
