I'm 45 and switching to graphite was the smartest thing I've ever done. Maintained my numbers from 25 years ago and something you didn't mention... WAY nicer to my elbows at impact as the shafts are a more natural shock absorber than steel. I was dealing with "tennis elbow" from practicing too much, and that improved significantly. Was definitely concerned about shot dispersion when I first switched, but shafts have improved so much over the years that wasn't an issue at all. Per usual, great video....

I used True Temper Gold shafts in my irons for almost 20 years. I noticed, with increasing frequency, that after a round I could definitely feel the arthritis in my wrists more. I moved on to a set of Ping G irons and wedges 3 years ago and had them made up with the Ping Alta "R" graphite shafts tipped 1/2" shorter to add 2-3 cpm. BIG difference! Not only did I notice the things like sound, feel and weight that Rick mentioned but the graphite shafts also seem to dampen the vibrations and my wrists no longer ache after a round! I'm a fan!!

As a 27 year old 8 handicap I finally got fitted for a set of irons a couple weeks ago and I’ll say trying the graphite shafts was the best thing for my game. Not only did I gain a lot of performance for my game, I did so while being able to do so with a smoother swing lighter swing. Truly glad I went in with a open and willing mind to try something out of my norm.

  • @RedwoodGeorge

I play Callaway Apex CF16's (so I guess they're 4 years old now?). When I was getting fitted I first tried the standard steel shaft and liked the way it felt. The fitter suggested I try the graphite shafts ("What am I - an old man?" - not quite but close). The clubs felt lighter, head speed was up and I was hitting five yards longer. Sure, it was a few hundred more but I'm very happy with the decision. The Callaway shafts are UST Mamiya Recoil which are a reflective silver so if you aren't looking closely you wouldn't know I wasn't playing steel shafts.

I’m in the same boat. I am a low handicap golfer and have 130g X-flex shafts on my 620mb’s. I am starting to feel like my timing is difficult to dial in, I’m thinking the graphite shafts might help with that and give me more head feel on my timing.

    Hey Rick, love your channel.
I play off 2 and have played stiff steel all my life.
A couple of months ago I played around with graphite WELL...
I got fit for Titiest T300's. I used to hit my 7 iron 145 meters. Now with regular Tensei graphite shafts... 170 meters on trackman, up to 190 meters on the course. Unbelievable.
Straighter than ever, yes fly higher and the spin is just like yours in the video, more than steel.
These things are just wonderful with a Driver swing speed of just over 100mph I now know I have been playing the wrong shafts for a long time.
Keep up the good work Rick

As a 27 year old high handicapper, changed my steel irons for Graphite shafted irons and it has considerably improved my game and handicap. So much easier to swing and hit, especially considering my muscles aren't built like a tour pro and I don't hit my irons flush every time. Helped with my confidence too. I think Graphite shafts (apart from the price) is a very good way to go, especially for mid to high handicappers. Nice video Rick. As always! From Zambia 🇿🇲

I was having lessons with a good old recommended pro who suggested I tried graphite and sr shafts by ping,I am a manual working carpenter joiner so strength wasn’t a big issue however after hitting graphite sr shafts my game has really moved on I am consistent with a score around 100, and last weekend shot 9 under my handicap, 35 points with 5 blobs on the card.
I would love to try those I blades with those shafts in them.

Excellent content and editing of the video. I recently got fitted again and I’m still considered a fast swing speed and tempo. Every time the fitter says still is stiff to extra stiff shaft. I took 4 clubs out to the range for testing the other day. 3 were stiff shaft steal and other other graphite regular flex. The 3 stiff starts were ok, but absolutely stripped every graphite shaft club with regular flex. It was a completely different feeling and the swing just felt natural. I placed an special order for a whole new bag of graphite regular flex. Looking forward to getting them out on the course.

He just said that graphite shafts are more fittable to each person, although pricier.

Yeah composite shafts (which are what "graphite" shafts are) have such high technology now, you can do so much with it compared to steel. That's why they're so expensive.

Another great review, Rick. I've been playing golf for 23 years but switched to all graphite shafts 4 years ago because of my elbows (golf elbows). My doctor, who also plays golf, recommended I switched to graphite shafts if I wanted to keep my elbows intact & keep playing golf. At first I was hesitant but sure enough, my doctor was right. Not only my elbows don't feel the vibration of the club when I hit golf balls, my shots actually went farther and I've been playing much better. The graphite shafts are really worth it for me.

so glad you did this review, i went to graphite several months ago, REVELATION! My swing speed is at the low end of average, 72mph with a 5 iron, they have seriously helped me stop the balls on the greens. My wedges, wilson staff model, the extra clubhead speed, without trying, through the ball helps me stop them on a sixpence, never ever have i stopped the ball so quickly, i simply dont get it why everyone isnt using them, if more did the price would come more into line with steel then we would all be happy, another super video rick, cheers

I think a better way to see the difference between graphite and steel shafts would be to use the launch monitor indoors with 2 sets of identical irons except for the shafts. That way you can accurately tell the difference between club head speed, ball speed, launch angle, distance, spin, etc. Even just comparing the SW, 7i, and 4i to get an idea of what the differences are like rather than having to do the full set. Maybe a future video!

Younger me - stiff iron shaft 125g
    a bit older 30ish to late 40s - stiff graphite shaft 105g
Now, in my 50s - regular graphite shaft 70g
It just allows me to play more comfortable and much much less body aches after the round. Is it more expensive, just a tad, but hopefully it will allow me longevity in this stupid game. 👍👍👍

Rick, your swing looks more relaxed with the graphite shafts: like you're only using 85% of your power. With the metal shafts, it looks like you're swinging too hard - almost like you're trying to live up to your shaft stiffness. Why don't you take your buddy, Peter, out to the course and have a match with the both of you using graphite shafts? I'll bet neither of you would be trying to kill the ball and you both would hit straighter. Bluntly put, golf requires both power & technique; technique is best executed at 85% power. If you swing as hard as you can, you lose accuracy. Let's see you beat Pete go head to head one more time..

He told me that if he needs to he can dial it up, but can play par golf all day long using that relaxed swing. Match the club to the swing to the distance.

SAS golf made a video about one length irons which made a similar point. Just for the longer clubs (3-6, set all being 7 iron length iirc), the shorter and consistent shaft length reduced maximum distance but made them easier for him to hit, so he'd middle it every time and actually gain distance (and accuracy) on average. Though it'd be best to run a mixed set since distance control becomes difficult with longer shafted 8-PW.

I too have always played steel irons for my 34 years of golfing, because I was always told they are more accurate. I just started getting back into golf a lot more this year , and I have been practicing, and playing combined about 2 to 3 times per week over the past few months. Unfortunately, I have developed golfers elbow, for the first time in my golf life. I was thinking lighter graphite shafts may help with it. I am okay with graphite now that I know they are just as accurate. I just hope the graphite shafts last a long time too.

Bought mavrik iron set with graphite shafts and I love them. As rick said, the first thing you’ll notice is weight but as far as club control goes, my dispersion has improved significantly and my distances have increased but that’s mainly attributed to loft differences between my old set and the mavrik’s. I finally broke 80 last week so I’m super satisfied with my choice. I was shooting in the 90’s when I bought them and have been practicing a lot so they aren’t magic wands but they definitely helped my game.

He’s talking for the irons. Using steel shafts in your driver and fairway woods would make the club incredibly heavy and almost unplayable. A graphite shaft will give you less control over the ball and less consistency on your Irons and wedges. On the other hand a graphite shaft is much easier to swing, and can be a great option, just in general for wedges and irons graphite will be less playable, will also be less consistent. Both great options depending on your handicap and ball striking consistency.

      @kourt2469 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sebastienalbert1187 false again. You won't lose accuracy from using graphite. As somehow who fits golf clubs every day and has tested basically every shaft in existence there is no drop in accuracy from graphite vs steel. The reason you see tour players using steel is because #1 that's what they grew up using and are accustomed too. #2 it's easier and cheaper to make a 130 gram steel iron shaft than it is to make a 130 gram graphite and most tour pros use heavier weight shafts in their irons.

I wanted to get fitted to get the best clubs suitted for my swing and something that can hopefully help me to be a little more consistent. After trying different club heads and shafts it was decided that grafite shafts were the way to go. I am also having the shafts purged which is supposed to also help with consistentcy. I unfortunately haven't gotten them yet, but I appreciate this review. It does give me some confidence that I made the right choice. I should also point out that I went to a paid fitter that is not brand specific so they were not pushing any particular manufacrlrure.
