    One of my favorite things about your videos is your invitation at the end. You give great reviews based on your perspective and then invite the other 349k subscribers to offer their experience as well. As an experienced (50+ years) backpacker I learn something from every video either from you or the comments or both. Thanks again!

    Crazy to me I never hear anyone talk about the Montbell Versalite. It's without a doubt my favorite rain jacket. Pit zips, super breathable, super adjustable all over the place, and a velcro/elastic combo on the wrists so you can cinch them down, but still take it off without undoing the velcro. It's absolutely awesome, especially in the humid south.

      sindex Probably because it’s $200+ dollars and It is sized for prepubescent boys. My husband is not a big guy but it fit him like a straight jacket. They should start making them for regular sized people and maybe even for people who have a few extra pounds (add an XXL and even an XXXL). Most of us would gladly pay top dollar for a great piece of gear that fits comfortably. Finally, I have heard two gear reviewers say that it wets out quickly for the money. All that combined, I never gave it a second thought.

    • @sindex
      @sindex 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not my experience at all with wetting out and sizing was perfectly in line with their chart, but I'm not here to convince you otherwise.

      There's no reason to buy Montbell for any piece of gear that a trash bag can approximate.

      I’ve found the Versalite impossible to find in stock ANYWHERE. Even from Montbell. I ended up buying a couple other brands, but still don’t have a favorite. Waiting for my Visp with pitzips to come in, and hoping the third time is the charm.

    Nice that you show a full range of options from budget to expensive. I have a Frogg Toggs jacket and yes they're kind of like a trash bag but do the job. I have a hard time with $200 for a super-thin rain jacket which is probably why you'll never see me in an EE.

    Ya BUBEN again on rain gear. My fondest memories were at 10 above to twenty below zero. The snow was dry. This was at work in an outdoor industry. Of the times. 1975-1993ish Tongass national forest. The season was over but circumstances dictated we carried on. I was actually the boss, called the Hook tender. I wore only long handle black wool, union suit (Woolies) trap door and all, and rain gear and cork boots that was it, no pants or hickory shirt no police brace suspenders no nuthin, and was so comfy and maneuverable. 'Course had to carry my rucksack as had no pockets. I hope you get my drift as it was,has been and is still the most dangerous job in America. Not proud of that, just true. Life of the Alaskan Logger. Ciao for Now!

      @@antsy_does thank you for everyone's input here to my question. It most appreciated! I have thought long and hard about this issue and a combination of my experience on the AT and all of your comments have led me to this conclusion or perhaps temporary thoughts until further evaluation. It seems to me as has always been the case, that there will be trade offs in one aspect or the other. The expected extremes,duration and application will be the determinating factors of choice and this explains the controversy of options as all conditions of the afore mentioned will result in a different experience. Pick you poison if you will. Thank you all again!

    Some of the most epic videos of your hikes star the Anti-gravity Gear jacket. Years of coated DWR $100 rain gear the really did not work for me when hiking in actual days on rain, I went with a good PAC-Lite Goretex parkas. The OR Foray that has full side zips is my current favorite. I still dayhike with my old Marmot Precip when I am looking for a wind shell that just needs to water resistant.

      Which OR jacket? The one I often see mentioned by backpackers is the Helium, but that doesn’t have pit zips or the adjustable hood. It’s also more expensive. I’ve never seen much mention of their other rain gear so far.

    • @danieljenkins2468
      @danieljenkins2468 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChristianeBenson I had a Helium II jacket that I just sent back for a refund. It wets out in less than 1 hour on the trail in a light rain, with the temperature in the fifties, and if it breaths at all I sure couldn't tell. As far as I am concerned, these supposedly Waterproof and Breathable jackets don't keep you as dry as the old style PVC coated polyester, non breathable jackets. Did I say breathable? save your money and get a jacket that can actually keep you dry, like the jackets Dixie wore on the AT, PCT, and the CDT. Ever hear her complain about those jackets wetting out? PVC coated polyester is the reason. It will be interesting to see how that new Visp works out, and I hope it does work out, but we'll have to wait and see on that one.....

    • @ChristianeBenson
      @ChristianeBenson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danieljenkins2468 I have an REI Goretex rain jacket that was designed for backpacking. It seems to be one of their less popular models, for whatever reason. It has pit zips, and the hand pockets are set higher up to be above the hip belt. I was out in a pretty good thunderstorm for over an hour without getting wet at all. I love it, but it’s probably a bit heavier than the raincoats she’s looking at.

    • @danieljenkins2468
      @danieljenkins2468 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChristianeBenson I hope it works out for you. I really do. But what caught my eye was the pit Zips. Why would a Beathable Gore Tex coat need pit Zips? You can get a polyurethane coated and ultralight shell with pit zips that will keep you dry as a bone through a long day in the rain. An hour is one thing. All day is something else. But then again the coat you got very well may fit your bill perfectly, but when you are 4 days out from the nearest trailhead, you need something that will keep you dry all day, day after day, or you could be in for a really miserable time of it, if not worse. Just sayin'........

    Great choices!! I have found a great middle of the road rain jacket! The Frogg Toggs Xtreme lite! Kinda hard to find, but they run about $50 on amazon and other retailers. To me its a step up from the ultralite frogg toggs rain jacket, but not quite a visp. Xtreme lite uses their dri-pore 2nd generation material. Its 2 layer with taped seams. Wow!! Waterproof and very Breathable! I have been nearly living out of it at camp this year, with all the rain we have been getting. The interior is a soft to the skin material which is nice cause it doesn't get sticky/clammy like some other rainjackets do. The shell is a waterproof material, not a coating so it won't wet out. Mens medium weighs only 7oz. so its pretty ultralight in my book. They make a mens and womens version. Unfortunately no pants i'm aware of in this series. But you can search around for a pretty lightweight matching option. Stay safe! Hike on!

    I have a hiking buddy that wears Frog Togs and they work well. One thing I might mention as a budget option is simply watching your local thrift stores. I've seen very expensive jackets sold there for dirt cheap. Just know your jackets ahead of times so you can recognize a good one and evaluate its condition. I've scored a bunch of hiking equipment this way. The key is being able to tell what is good and what isn't.

    This may be OT since it isn't strictly about ultralight. I've been using the same outer shell for hiking as for mountaineering. I've been using the Arcteryx Beta LT. Bomber protection, pit zips, layers well. Yes it's 14 oz, yes it's expensive, but when I want protection, I REALLY want protection. Has done the trick for me in 40+ mph wind at freezing temps as well as day-long driving rain. If it's "nice" conditions (warmer and just raining) I skip any mid-layer and wear light base and outer shell only.
    That said, I'll try the Visp. If it offers equivalent protection at a fraction of the weight, I'll jump for joy. Or maybe it's time for me to have TWO jackets...

I also have the Arcteryx Theta (no longer made anymore) which is a great jacket for wild weather. My favorite is the Stio Ender Paclite. Comes in men's or women's. A few different colors. It's fully waterproof but very breathable. Made from Gore-Tex Paclite. Seem sealed, waterproof zippers and pit zips. It's a little heavier at 14oz but it also is windproof so it takes the place of 2 jackets. The down side is the price. At $250 it's certainly not going to be in everyone's budget. If you do decide to pull the trigger on one, I promise you won't be disappointed.

With the extended zip vents, I can control ventilation and remain dry much better than with any soft-shell that I have tried. I pay the weight penalty, 16oz. Lifetime warranty. Right now my go to is my Wiggys Ducksback jacket. It’s pretty lightly insulated with an insulation that isn’t affected by water and the outer material is the closest thing that does what Goretex claims to do without any of the harsh chemical treatments. It’s 3 tightly woven layers of nylon. The water does indeed bead off like a Ducks back. Love Wiggys products. Might not be the lightest stuff out there but it’s comparatively affordable, dang tough, warm when soaking wet even below freezing and Made in the USA!

And we knew that no matter how waterproof or heavy it was it didn't keep you dry, it only kept you warm. In the woods it couldn't be too heavy because you would get too hot. Literally steam boiling out of your collar when you pulled it open. So you were soaked anyway using the heavy expensive gear used by commercial fishermen in the bearing sea. And would rip to shreds anyway. So we used somewhere in between. When I first started in the woods I had light weight rain gear for hiking and camping in temperate weather and the old boys said it wouldn't last and they were right. Didn't even last one day. Ripped to shreds.

    My rain jacket of choise is the RAB Phantom, it is superlight with about 100g/3,5oz, it is breathable and it packs down to the size of a softball.
    RAB is in the UK and they know how to deal with rain because it is raining every single day in the UK ;-))))

    Hardly ultralight but I use the REI Rainier Rain jacket as a basic outer shell in basic color runs about $44.00. A great versatile value in my opinion. I'll throw my military style poncho over everything, including backpack in the rain, it's also my tarp shelter very versatile. I wear a lot of nylon, it's light and dries quickly. In general, I'd prefer to hunker down than get wet if possible.

    I have several favorite rain jackets that I use depending on conditions: OUtdoor Research, Berghaus, and REI brands are what I use most. The OR is lighter weight and more breathable and I wear that in warm weather. The REI is a heavier bomb proof jacket that is bright orange for really wet colder weather and in hunting season. My Berghaus is a great all purpose jacket that I rely on most often and is a good compromise between all the features I need. I find having several jackets w different strengths gives me the ability to have just what I want for the conditions I’m in. And since you are swapping out depending on weather they wear really well and last a good long while.

    The Frogg Toggs are definitely not durable - I've ripped a couple of them on brush when bushwhacking or getting snagged on something. Although they're not pretty they work great, even in really heavy rain and wind. Bang for the buck is great.

      How are use those $20 frog togs on long-distance bicycling tours, for example from south east coast of Florida to San Diego California. The jacket lasted the whole two months which are used for rain and as a windbreaker in winter. Cycling in the pants cause the crotch part to rip out. My suggestion is if you’re going to cycle with frog tog pants on First reinforce the crotch area and the seams with gorilla tape. They are not durable as far as going through brush is concerned. They will rip open and even small branches can poke holes. But they will last for a good long time and are breathable.

      @@johnshaw8228 The pants would never make it through a cycling trip. They're not strong enough for that. I would find something else. The jacket might work better.

    I like any rain jacket made from gortex shake dry material. My first one was a cycling jacket made by Gore and I am currently using a runners jacket by mammut. Superlite, never gets wet, and on sale. Always on sale. Not super durable but I have carried the mammut for 3 years and it still like new. Even used it to a soggy baseball game.

    I have a higher end women’s Frogg Toggs raincoat that has withstood rough and tumble farm life for 2 years now. It has Velcro at the wrists for adjustment, vents over the breasts for breath ability, 2 zippered side pockets, a cell phone pocket on the chest & a hood that can be rolled down into the collar. In the up position, the hood has those pull cord tighteners. It’s seam sealed from the factory and so far the front zipper hasn’t broken or rusted. It cost $39.99 for just the jacket and there was no option to purchase rain pants. The color is teal blue and light grey 2 tone. It’s also very lightweight; and I’ll be taking it on my section hike of the AT this coming June.
    For rain pants, on the farm I use Helly Hansen Bibb overalls that are heavy duty, tough and heavy, but fit easily over 2 pair of pants in frigid weather. I also have a pair of the typical cheap tan Frogg Toggs, but no matter how large of a size I buy, the bottomside inevitably rips out after a few uses. They are just a waste of money and I won’t be buying another pair.

    Gear shopping is so exhausting! I appreciate great reviews like you give. What seems ridiculous at this point in 2023 is how there seems to be no puece of gear that hits all the marks we need and want. Its so annoyijg how one jacket is great for almost everything but no option for pit zips. Why on earth cabt a single company provide all the points...a good adjustable hood with brim, breathable, light yet durable, pit zips and it not cost 500 😂

    For extreme weather (aka winter blizzard wet weather) I have an ancient Dead Bird that is about to be retired after so many years of use but my in-the-pack rain jacket I've been using last few years for 3 seasons is MH's Stretch Ozonic. I realize most will say it's not a true rain jacket but for the hiking I do, it does the job. It's not ultralight but it is durable and didn't spend that much on either of the ones I have. (I had a helium II but wasn't pleased at all with it so it went away.)

    Ever considered weight- and bulkwise trading the down jacket for a heavier but arguably improved rain jacket?
    Personally I love the Bergans super lett rain jacket even if it comes in at 500 grams. To me it doubles as a windstopper as well, even in -20C I am comfortable with just that jacket and a light fleece beneath. The pit zips helps removing trapped heat greatly which is another reason I love it. Coincidently it looks very much like the Visp does. As always your video is excellent, thank you.

      I know right? Mine has snaps, covers more leg and the pack also. Can be opened for ventilation, snapped shut for a tighter seal. I can sit down and rest with my legs drawn up under and hood up and be completely out of the rain. Occasional footprint and emergency shelter or bivy. Very versatile and adaptable.
