Bought a very cheap packable jacket and when the waterproofing disappeared very quickly decided to coat it with fabsil gold and was amazed by the result.
how's the breathability?
@@OutdoorPrep I have not purchased the required equipment to test breathability but I used it as an overjacket in rain during a 120 mile motorbike trip and it was dry inside.

Interesting :), I have also been on the hunt for a new rain jacket specifically for hiking. One of the stores here in Sweden, Fjallsport in Gothenburg (specialized in ultralight hiking gear), generally recommends rain jackets made in polyamid, not polyester, due to technical and durability issues. They sell rain jackets from Montbell which are considered favourites among the ultralight crowd. Myself, I purchased North Face Dryzzle FL Jacket, made in polyester but highly breathable which I consider is an important factor since I sweat heavily during physical activity. I also like the sizing of NF clothes.

I bought the Rab Flashpoint, which is made with Pertex shield+ and is 180g. I ended up selling it as the weight saving & packability turned out to be not as much a priority as I thought it would be and I was using my Rab Mantra more often, which is a more robust animal.
Yeah those ultralight jackets are for specific occasions and not everyday use. I still have my Fjallraven EcoShell which I use when I need a more robust shell. Is the Rab one a gortex one? Are you happy with it?
I've had this jacket for 8 years and it is still working awesome. Size L (normally I have M) fits even over a 12L Salomon race vest. Gonna upgrade though because I need sealed zippers to pass UTMB gear check and I also want an adjustable hood.

I own this jacket for two years, i use it mainly for running and hiking. The material is absolutely waterproof, very breathable and pretty "strong". I mean there are no signs of abrasion on it from the backpack, you can take for hiking too if you go UL and you have well padded shoulder straps. However there are 2 major problems with the jacket. First, the tiny and weak zipper. In heavy rain water slowly comes through the zip on the chest area if wearing a backpack while on the move. Second, the cuffs are not tight enough and water oozing in. But overall it is a great jacket.

@@OutdoorPrep From 0 celsius to 45. But honestly, it does not work well in cold or windy because of the thin fabric, you cannot rely on it as an extra layer. On other side it shines if the weather is hot because the breathability of the fabric.

Good video, subbed. The Montbell Versalite is a good option, 182 grams (size medium) >33,000mm waterproof and 43,000g/m2/24 hours breathability and it's fully featured with pitzips, pockets and adjustments. Berghaus states that the Hyper 100 is now 60,000 MVTR.

I bought the Versalite and even with the pit zips open I am still wet from sweat after 20 minutes.
In Sydney it might be raining but doesn't mean it's cold

Glad you’re going ultralight :) I use a GoreTex Shakedry jacket and it doesn’t use any DWR and it’s extremely breathable. The only downside is that it’s not that abrasion resistant. But no signs of wear yet!
Oh that's interesting! I've heard about the ShakeDry but never looked at it in detail. How long have you used it for?
@@OutdoorPrep Just this summer on a few hikes. I don’t walk in it unless it’s raining or if it’s really windy in the mountains. I have a wind jacket but I don’t always bring it (UL mentality hehe).
My other GoreTex wetted out (the DWR didn’t last) in a heavy storm in the Swedish mountains and I got mild hypothermia. The outer layer got soaked and cold winds really made me cold. It was awful and since then I don’t trust regular membrane jackets that rely on DWR.
Eeeeeeh that doesn’t sound like fun. Yeah the membrane has its limitations. Interesting that this one is working differently. I understand it protects well from the wind? Unlike this jacket apparently
@@OutdoorPrep The membrane is not the problem. It’s the outer layer that relies on DWR that’s the problem.
Layer 1: nylon treated with DWR.
Layer 2: the GoreTex membrane.
Layer 3: inner lining.
When the DWR wears out in heavy rain the outer layer gets saturated and soaks up water, then you essentially have a wet jacket on you and when the cold wind hits you get really cold. Besides that, when the outer layer wets out the membrane can’t breathe so you get wet on the inside from sweat (like you’re wearing a plastic bag). That’s why mechanical venting like pit zips are important.
Shakedry has the membrane on the outside so you never have to worry about DWR or an outer layer that soaks up water. The water just runs off :)
Very nice find👍🏾 Besides the manufacture’s target audience of runners and bicyclists, it also seems that they prefer smaller framed thin people in terms of their sizing schemes. In the video your only mention of the XL size that you purchased was that it was too small, and that you will be searching for a larger XXL size, but unfortunately that is a bit arbitrary because, although you don’t look like a big guy, we don’t know what your particular measurements are.

The slim fit might be driven by wanting to stay sub 100g. I’m 196cm, 100kg+ so I’m quite big I’d say. Most of my outdoor products are XL, from Fjallraven or Rab. This jacket was almost a good fit.
You won't go wrong if you try the collaboration between Ronhill and Mountain Equipment. The Ronhill Tech Gore-tex Mercurial Jacket. It's proven itself to be very reliable for hiking.

I have another rain jacket that has no pockets and it's rarely taken out of my closet because of that. You might save some grams on the weight of the jacket but, you end up adding much more weight to your pack with the gloves you now need to carry.
Yeah I get ya. It’s all about trade offs.
This would work well if you only carry it for when it rains and it sits in your pack rest of the time. It’s definitely something to think about
Try looking at the OMM KamLite smock as well.

@@OutdoorPrep so far, I was only able to test it in the Annapurna region. There, I was wet in and out due to humidity. So far I like it, but would love it below 150g and not 230g.
First time here on your channel, good video, BUT it would have been excellent to show a full length body shot to demonstrate the length of it and where and how that fits at the waist and also to state your body size/height, without that info it's difficult for us to get an idea.....thank you. V-e-r-y interesting review of this product. In terms of sizing would you recommend we buy 1, 2, or 3 sizes larger than the size we normally wear?
Yikkessss. It is priced between $300-$400, you made no mention of cost. That's a lot of money for something that likely shouldn't be taken backpacking.
Yeah the price is quite steep for a product that might not like a backpack. I hope to get to do a proper review next year. In terms of sizing, I would say one size up.

I just got the XXL version last week and it fits much better. Have not tried it yet with a backpack on a longer trip. Expect to have that info in the summer.
@@OutdoorPrep Thank you, Rob. I'm planning a 600km hike in early June and am between Hyper 100 and Rab Phantom. A bit skeptical about the durability issue with a backpack. I guess I will have to find out by experience :D
@@stergiosk oh that's a long trip. I definitely liked this one more over the Phantom. Also based on some of the comments it seems that this jacket can withstand an UL backpack pretty well. Will depend on your shoulder straps and total weight I guess. Good luck with the trip - let us know how it went!
@@OutdoorPrep Thanks. From some comments I found on Reddit some people said they had issues with seam sealing falling apart after a couple of days. Did you like more the form factor? Being a jacket compared to an anorak for the Phantom? Or the breathability/ fabric feel?
@@stergiosk yes that indeed. I was wearing the XXL with a base layer + fleece + down jacket and was still reasonably comfortable and not too tight.
Hi Rob. I was looking at this jacket for hiking but I have reservations on the backpack damaging it. Did you get the xxl and how did it perform? If not what did you purchase for light weight and back pack durable. Thanks for your comments on this gary
Yeah I get that Gary. Some folks in the comments have let me know that it does just fine with a backpack. I’d still use it with care. I did manage to get the XXL and I’m very happy with it. I’ve only used it a few times though, not yet on a longer trip so can’t comment on durability.
Great video. I really wish berghaus kept using this fabric, there is almost nothing that compares to its breathability/HH/weight. I went up 2 sizes so i can use mine year round and am going to pick up another in case they stop making them. If you’re an ultralight backpacker then you already know how to look after this type of gear.
Very true. This is not for everyone. I’ve used it a few times while cycling and I really was impressed by its breathability 👌🏼

@@OutdoorPrep It's still going strong! It's my go-to jacket now for when conditions are mixed. Only time I use something heavier (Berghaus Asgard smock) is when blizzards or heavy persistent rain is forecast...but mainly for the extra coverage of a better hood. Also should say I use a separate wind shirt so I only use the hyper when it's actually raining quite heavily.

@Danny Yes it can, but when it's torrential or in blizzards I prefer a heavier goretex jacket with a more technical hood and cuffs I can cinch down etc. The Hyper material is fantastic but it's also light on features, so like every good jacket it works perfectly within the margins of what it was designed for.

On sizing berghaus has gone slimmer and smaller I purchased a fell master coat in large as a shell for over a tee shirt, if I wanted to layer a x/l or even xx/l would be reqd, where as my pack lite jackets are large and go over a fleece or down jacket.
They must want the slim market !!!!
Oh that’s interesting indeed. It was my first product from the brand. I’ve ordered a fleece and went to up XXL but it was waaaaay too big.
On this jacket it might have been driven by weight and wanting to stay sub 100g. Which packlite jacket do you have? Is it also Berghaus?

Decathlon has a jacket I'm interested in, it's called something like Kiprun Light, €45, very breathable at RET=4.72, 171g in size L, and yes, they do offer it in size 2XL. It's a bit heavier than the Hyper 100, but it is much cheaper. Keep in mind that they do not state the waterproof rating in mm, just that it is waterproof, so that is something you will have to test out yourself.

It looks a little light, showerproof, the FH500 looks more interesting.
At over $300 it should be gold plated as well.
Why?
Unsuitability with rucksacks is also the problem of Gore-Tex Shakedry, it would be perfect, but it's not for hiking.
The MVTR value is not standardized, any producer can claim whatever he wants. The measure is influenced by test temperature and test humidity. Measures are not comparable among different producers. It's a bit like the R value before the standardization of the measure.
As far as a light and packable raincoat is concerned, I have just substituted my Great Escapes with Gore-Tex membrane, bought in 1999, which weights 580g with a Salewa Pedroc 2,5l with Powertex membrane, it's 2,5 layers, it has a declared weight of 190 grams, but I measured it at 169-170g after having cut away the numerous maintenance labels (they are many, like a Decathlon garment). Sadly, I still have to test it in the field so I cannot comment on its performance. Specs are 10.000 mm HH and 40.000 MVTR but, again, that's not directly comparable with another manufacturer. It sacrifices some water resistance in favour of some additional breathability, which is OK with me. 100% "nylon".
My Great Escapes jacket is now devoted to everyday use.
The jacket was in the wrong size so I could not use it. I have XXL and have been using it on various day trips. So far very breathable 👌🏼 also don’t see the issue with backpack, other people also have commented that they’ve been using it with backpacks without issue. It’s still a very thin fabric so good to keep that in mind.

Around 120cm chest. I wear XL from all other brands. This one is just like a very tight T-shirt.

North66 says that what is over 10000 is marketing gimmick and 10000 is enough in real life. I would still get this to replace my Patagonia which is not waterproof at all.

@@OutdoorPrep I believe it's an older version of the Houdini jacket, it's just a piece of nylon with a coating for water repellency, but i don't remember it ever repelling any water.

Brother, the jacket you are covering in this video [your jacket] is an XL Ladies [fake unisex] ... this is why it is a small fit with short arms.
Men's Jackets have the zip baffle on the other side.
I hope Berghaus replaced it with a Mens XXL ... as a woman's one in XXL is a 44chest [size 18] with short arms.
I see where you’re coming from but my build doesn’t show on camera. I’m 6’4 / 196 and a woman’s jacket would never fit me.

I'm 5'10 with a 44inch chest [34 inch waist] ... and XL womens still isn't the same size as XL Mens on my tiny little excuse for a mans body ... XL Mens fits me ... but XL Womens is too short in the arm and too tight across my shoulders.
A similar issue happens with boots ... size 9 [44] womens boots wont fit a size 9 [44] man ... they're a different shape.
Although ... I used to know a girl who couldn't wear size 7 womens boots despite being a size 7 ... but size 7 mens boots fitted her just fine.
The Baffle on your jacket [in your video above] is on the womens side ... is your replacement jackets baffle on the same side as the one on your video ?

@@OutdoorPrep oh my eyes deceive me. I have a 44 chest and weigh a bit too much at 200lbs and5’11”. The jacket looks great but as someone else noted they are not made for the larger folk.
@@gingebrien2408 I'd say I have a 46/47 inch chest, 240lbs and 6'4.... I'd say I qualify to be in the larger folk category :)
Again XXL fits me great. Keep in mind this is a thin jacket to be worn on top of a base layer. Not made for multiplayers or even a down jacket underneath.

And I’m sure most people have had experiences were they order a large or XL and here in the states it’s more like a medium. Great review and truly appreciate the info.

Yes! Got the XXL and it’s great! I’ve used it mostly while cycling and it keeps me both warm and dry. Breaths very well

What it’s called?
In the US it is very difficult to find serious outdoor apparel (I no longer consider Patagucci and The North Lace suitable for serious backpacking and mountaineering) for adult males. I find it incredibly odd since every third person is morbidly obese. But if you're like me (ex weightlifter, 6 feet, 240 pounds, size 50 suit/sport jacket) there is little apparel to choose from. Manufacturers seem intent on meeting the needs of children, females, effeminate males, dwarves, marathon runners, Hobbits, elves, midgets, and starving third world famine refugees. Even companies who advertise apparel in XL and XXL offerings are not using true sizing. With 50+ years of backpacking and mountaineering experience throughout the US and Canada it seems as though I'm being forced to give up my preferred pursuits and adopt something like big game hunting, a "sport" where manufacturers and vendors supply rugged, functional clothing to true adult males.
Hahaha you had me in stitches but you're not wrong... If you like a loose fit - check out the purple mountaineering rain jacket (I have a video on it) - I think that will be a good size. It's intended to be used with a down jacket underneath so if you don't wear that - you should be fine. It's called TNF AMK (Advanced Mountain Kit ) L5 FUTURELIGHT Jacket. Hope this helps!

Great jacket, just made for small people. Anyone who plays/played rugby or isn't pint size simply cannot buy this as too small, they really need to think about sizes, many ex military still buy their kit, but on this one sorry it's tiny
