    Great video, man! I shared this with a non-music friend that was asking about how time signatures and beats worked in music; it's a great oversight of the basics. Awesome content :]

    Thank you! This was very enlightening! I Know this stuff. However, hearing an explanation about basic theory once in a while helps me "cleaning" my brain from all the ideas that I make seem harder than they are. This video made me simplify things again. I'm currently transcribing a difficult Charlie Parker's solo on a Ballad and writting so many notes and subdivisions on such a slow tempo has been quite annoying. I think now I will take less time to write it down. Thank you, once again!

    I would really love some observation of Bill Bruford's work. He has A LOT of polyrhythm and polymeter going on. Both on his solo albums, his jazz band Earthworks, King Crimson, and Yes.
    And also on his solos (especially the solo from Deja Vrooom DVD (King Crimson), he solos over a pattern played by the Chapman Stick and constantly changes the time feel. (I made a cover of that :D :D :D). I love your videos!!

    Are 3/2 and 3/4 considered odd time signatures?

    • @YogevGabay
      @YogevGabay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends who you ask I guess? For some reason people don't consider it an odd TS, but it is a odd number so, yeah?
      Wow such a non helpful answer hahahah

    • @GoblinAlchem
      @GoblinAlchem 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When thinking about "oddity" not in the mathematical sense but in musical common sense, then I think 3/4 is not an odd time signature. It's the waltz known for centuries! I mean, everyone has been hearing and singing 3/4 music since childhood and got used to it. It's a bit less common than 4/4, but it's everywhere. The same goes for 3/2 and 3/8 (slower or faster, but still the same idea) and 6/8 (which is almost the same as 3/4). On the other hand, "odd" music is something unusual, non-conventional. For example, 5/4, 7/8, 9/8, 11/16. And 9/8 also. So I have devised the following scheme. If the top number of the time signature is a power of 2 (e.g. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16), or if it's 3 multiplied by a power of 2 (e.g. 3, 6, 12), then it's a "regular" time signature. If it has any other prime factors (e.g. 5, 7, 11), or if it's multiplied by 3 more than once (e.g. 9), then it's an odd time signature. For example, 5/4, 5/8 and 10/8 will be odd time signatures (even though 10 is an even number). And 9/8 will be also an odd time signature (a waltz inside a waltz is not a waltz anymore). The bottom number doesn't matter (it's always a power of 2).

    • @YogevGabay
      @YogevGabay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GoblinAlchem But I wonder. So some cultures like the balkans or turkish music for example have a lot of traditional songs in 9. Is it still considered odd there? I actually don't know the answer. I mean, I don't really know if we call it odd because it's NOT EVEN or because it's STRANGE. see what I mean? So there's an Iraqi groove in 10 beats. Is that not an odd time signature? This is a very interesting conversation actually !

    • @GoblinAlchem
      @GoblinAlchem 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that's interesting! I am from Russia, and I've heard 5 or 9 beats only in jazz and prog music. Probably this means that it's easier for Balkan and Iraqi people to understand jazz!
