  • Time Consuming Ep #13:
The guest vs Host is a musical distribution system I came up with that helps me categorize the different elements within a Polyrhythm and determine which one is the primary pulse and which one is the secondary one.

This video is obviously just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this system, and there's a lot more to it. If you'd want to dive deeper, feel free to contact me at gabayyogev@gmail.com

"Let's say I'm not a musician, and I have enough money to buy a house." Yep, makes sense, I don't know any musicians that have enough money to buy a house ;)

I think Dua Lipa and Paul McCartney qualify as musicians. I also think they own a house.

    Cool concept.
The cards don't really seem to add much IMO, but the house analogy makes a lot of sense.

Homework was an awesome idea. I'll try it and then see if I can figure out. I'm not expecting to be able to do it, it's Tigran Hamasyan we are talking about.

Love what you're doing here @YogevGabay! you make this theory super interesting and accessible, even though it's way over my head, I really appreciate how you're breaking these concepts down for us!! Big Meshuggah fan, and learning more about their polyrhythmic work just deepens my appreciation for their tunes that much more. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR BRAIN ON THE INTERNET!!

I think you may wish to check out the song "Path of Destruction" by Trail of Tears. In that song, the melody is the host and the drums are guests. But at the beginning of the song, the guests attract all attention so that the listener thinks they own the house, and only when the host kicks them out the true rhythm can be heard. And later the guests return and again try to take the house over!

this was awesome! I've been listening to what about me for years and never realized why some parts sound "weird" or "not in 4/4 anymore" and now i know is due to the lack of the "host" presence! hahaha. Also I loved the breakdown of the previous vid, I always used to jam in quintuplets to that section but it seemed off at some point and it was because of that 4 notes "bridge" that conects the 2 sections! Keep it up man.

Great video, as always!! Although for me, I always perceive the smaller number as the host. Take for example 3:4, angramme.github.io/polyrhythm/ helps me demonstrate it. 3:4 or 4:3 (snare and hat or hat and snare), most of the time the 3 feels like the host for me. It happens to me when I try different combinations as well... I think it might be because the notes of the 3 are more spacious on every bar, it makes you feel as if the 4 is contained in the 3. ma daatcha yogev?
