- Happy New Year! Here I am, starting out with a little bit of scrap stitching, making hardly any impact on my huge pile of scraps, but at least I end up with a little pouch to keep my sewing things in!

When you got your mum’s button tin, I burst out laughing…with a few tears. My mother had an old wooden button box that could keep me busy sifting through it for an hour when I was small. She passed away on 2020 and I had to go through all their things they had accumulated for 75 years. She had sorted that box of buttons by colors and put them into parts bins (with the little plastic drawers). Well…I poured each little drawer into an old Christmas tin I’d been dropping buttons in for 50 years. Interestingly, I recognized buttons from the old wooden button box. She never threw out those old buttons, thank heavens. 😢❤. It’s very calming to poke through a stash of old buttons to find four different buttons to sew on something.
I have one from my Mom too! Good memories😊

So many people of a certain age have memories of the button tin. My tin was an old cigar box and I still have it with most of the original buttons. Some of the bakelite buttons started disintegrating but most held up. I used to sit under the dining room table and string the buttons into a very long snake. That’s how I learned to hold a needle and rethread it many times.😂 The table was covered with a knotted lace tablecloth and it was my magical spot since it was easy for me to see out but hard for the adults to see me under there. They had to listen for the clicking of the buttons as I sifted through them to make my snake.
My heart burst when you got the button box out. Childhood memories of rainy days and drawing pictures and then using the buttons to fill in the drawing. What children today are missing ... I have a button box too,
but no children to play with them... But I still play with it and dig through it and delight in finding the beautiful antique and vintage buttons. ❤❤❤
Hi Kate. My first time on your channel. It was so relaxing watching your video. I went to school in Rajasthan, in Ajmer, and the nuns taught us cross stitch. I'm 53 now, and still love art and craft. You could put all sorts of things in there! Use it as a gift bag, toiletries, artist's tools, crochet and knitting tools, pantyhose and undies in your luggage, something that you want to pad or conceal or protect.

Oh the joy of the button tin. That has reminded me that as a child I used to sit in the cupboard under the stairs with the button tin. The sound of you swishing round in it is pure joy 😊
Me too, my Mom use to teach me my colors and addition and subtraction with buttons. I sat under the table while she sewed and we chatted…I was very young and tiny, she’d teach me words,numbers, letters… Turns out she had her Grandma’s button box ( my great grandma) and that’s the button tin I grew up with. Turns out she gave it to me and I made a quilt that now hangs on the wall in my quilt room. It’s made with the very largest, prettiest buttons for flowers, complete with a patchwork basket design,embroidered basket handle, stem and leaves. The sounds and smell of a button tin is heavenly, and they are lovely to sift through and admire!
My Mum used to have one too…I should probably start one ❤
When my children were very young I gave them a threaded needle that had the point cut off and the button tin. They would string the buttons onto the thread while I was sewing. It helped them practice their fine motor skills and kept them busy while I sewed!

Your cottage just makes me smile with seeing your treasures when you move about your sewing room. I really really like the pouch you created from your bits of dot fabrics. I am going to make one, but probably use a printed fabric and quilt around the designs in the fabric design. I have taken hand quilting classes, so using a machine just dosen't appeal to me. My grandmother hand pieced and quilted, and I loved sitting and watching her with her needle and thread working away. (On a personal note, I love your hair, wish I were brave enough to go that short, mine is completely white like snow but at age 80 I guess that happens, lol).
Just in the middle of making the pouch with some lovely birds and nests fabric. Perfect project for this material.

I made a pouch like yours in an afternoon today I have never had stitched before. I have a small quilt top I had just finished and am now contemplating hand stitching it. Thank you Kate for showing me how.
I have my grandmother's button jar. She had a friend who had a collection of buttons in a cabinet with pull-out drawers made especially for a collection. In the USA women made button bracelets in the 1960's. It was a knitted cuff of metallic thread and metal buttons were attached to it. Buttons do bring up pleasant memories. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Hello from California. it is 1100pm here. I was watching cooking shows and getting so hungry. I stopped eating after 700pm for lent. Pure torture and salivating terribly. So lucky me I came upon your channel. You were very informative and give excellent instructions. Now I want to start sewing again. A small project like your sewing kit sparked my interest. Almost 10 years since I quilted. That was because, I was taking care of my mom, she has found her final resting place. Thank you for your encouragement. Just what I needed.😂

Thank you Kate, your button box brought back happy memories of playing with my aunt’s button box as a child. I inherited my mother’s box and have added to it over the years. I love buttons, especially old ones. The pouch is lovely and would make a good present.

The button tin 🥰🥰. How wonderful that it was your grandmother’s and your mum’s. Brought tears to my eyes.
The sound of raking through the button box brings fond memories of my mother's button box, which now belongs to me. The same sound is made as my grandchildren now rake through the box seeing what seem to them as oddities, as their life has zippers, Velcro, and elastic. What a lovely project.
I loved the search through your button tin. Reminded me how much I enjoyed sitting with my mom while she sewed, just letting those buttons flow through my fingers while I picked out the next one I wanted to string. I loved the colors and sizes, but most of all the sound. I wonder how many of the younger set ever got to do that. Makes me remember to find all the buttons I have and make a tin for my granddaughter.
Roberta, make the tin of buttons WITH your granddaughter. It will be a memory that may last her lifetime!

I always sorted my Mothers buttons out with the fancy ones (rhinestones) out. I always felt so fancy holding them. All the unique ones too.
Quite fun times… Mother never had or was never quite. 8-10 kids/teens.

Glad to be back on the lime green couch with everyone. I have also been sorting through my scraps this week. I started sewing skinny strips diagonal onto 10" muslin foundation blocks. I find it relaxing to "make fabric"- my pattern, my rules.
Such a lovely video today. I too have a button tin passed down from my mother and possibly from her mother as well. I love the little envelope style carry tote. It will be perfect for a few of my crochet hooks I like to take on trips. I absolutely am in love with the colors of the crochet afghan in your chair… I taught myself how to crochet in 2020 and the only thing that I can crochet at this time is granny squares, so your crocheted afghan has given me such an inspiration of colors. I always enjoy a little crumb piecing. Even if I don't have a project in mind, I will make some 5 inch squares and an idea will follow. It is great fun, but expensive in thread use. lol
Cheaper than buying more fabric though! And it really gets the creative ideas flowing!
Yes I agree, and I use up thread spools & bobbins that have a little bit of thread left on them that isn't enough for a large project. Very satisfying almost therapeutic, use of bits and pieces. Very relaxing. @@gingerfeeley6849

I was thinking of a little pouch for a spool of thread inside the pouch, and a couple of needles on the flap. Perhaps a bit of elastic on the flap to hold the scissors.

Welcome back, Kate. It’s nice to see you. You are so meticulous and admired. I just slap the pieces together, after placing them in a bag divided between lights and darks; no sorting of pieces. Then I trim them up. I know this as Mile A Minute stitching. It gets rid of a lot of scraps!
Beautiful project to start the year. Last week I made a pouch for a small pair of scissors I found lost on a deserted road. Used old scraps, my beloved grandmother’s embroidery thread, and a press stud that had been waiting, on its original card, to be used for at least 50 years. Quite pleased with myself and will enjoy attempting this project too. Thank you for the showing us how.
I love that. The hand quilting is so rustic and so pretty. I have my grandma’s button box too. Passed to my mum and now to me. I spent many times just tipping them all out and looking at so many different buttons. I recently sorted them all out into colours and bought a divider box to store them. The original box was getting a bit beaten up but I couldn’t throw it out. It still sits in my sewing cupboard. So many memories. 🥰

Love it! That would have been perfect to have a couple weeks ago when my hubby was in hospital and I was toting around my little squares and papers in a plastic baggie. LOL ...got some funny looks from the nurses I did!
When I was small my mom would let me play in her button box while she sewed. I have that button box now. I can spend hours touching the buttons❤ love the pouch. Happy New Year 🎉

I fervently pray every day, I meet a lovely person like you 🙏🙏🙏, and she patiently teaches me how to do patchwork projects. I just love patchwork. I have ADD and Autism, and Anxiety/Depression, which makes it hard for me to learn. I’m not feeling sorry for myself or anything… I can follow tutorials too. I’ve completed a course at my local college, and finished a few projects. It was fun, but my teacher was kind of impatient and didn’t understand my problems. It would be so good to find a kind and patient person, as I mentioned, who was patient enough to help me learn.

I finally made myself a thimble pip, and put a long ribbon on it to attach to my scissors handle. Haven't lost on in 2 years!

I love your idea of making use of little pieces of scrap. My grandmother would make quilts out of scraps of material from my mother’s sewing projects for the clothing she did for all of us, girls and boys over the years. She would cut them into one and a quarter inch squares, and of course that was back when you didn’t have a rotary cutter and she used an old wooden yardstick for her guide, her marking and measuring and cutting and she hand quilted every single piece together no sewing machine and she would get the quilt top done, and it wasn’t anything fancy, but it was really cool to see all of our clothing preserved in that quiltand she made a lot of them there in a chair just as you were working in the evening and in between her daily chores/😮😮 projects and show those tiny squares together one row at a time. Eventually she gave the quilt top to my mother, who then bind it in quilted etc. to finish it off. But she didn’t believe in wasting any scrap material and I have kept a lot of pieces of material over the year for that same reason. Didn’t know what I was going to do with it, but I hope you go leave something could be made when it was a pillow or something, just don’t waste the fabric.
I think this would be a wonderful project to do with the Granddaughter, and help her not only how to use the machine, but handing and sewing in the ditch; looking through the button Tan together. Many years ago Mary Kay put out a traveling JEWELRY bag that was on the same Principal only it had zippers in pockets but it rolled up just like your square with the ribbons tied and it’s got to be close to 40 years old and I still have it and I still use it. I can see many uses for this 15 years, or whatever size you would choose to make your “fabric envelope”, as I would call it.

I just found myself drawn to your teaching video because you sounded a lot like my grandmother not the one that made the one Square quilt but the other one who spent a lot of time with me and teaching me a lot including gardening and I miss her a lot. Dear Kate in the first place I wish you a happy and pleasant year. Then I want to thank you for two things you have done for me. The first is the discovery of the Lord of the Rings that I thought before was intended for old teenagers 😂
The other thing is that you pushed me to sew by hand and I just finished the hand quilting of a « grandmother’s garden »who was bored in the wardrobe. The result is incredible. And what a relaxing and creative activity.

Kate, I love your creative ambition and to see all the things you make, surrounding you in your cozy cottage is a delight. Loved seeing the cat share time with you also. I too enjoy using up the bits of scrap fabric that accumulates, just like my grandfather did, making his quilts. I make tiny felt books, where I collage small scraps on the front and inside panels and embellish with stitching and beading. the inside of the rectangle is lined with a scrap, then two felt panels on each end/side, so it creates a pocket, then I sew button hole stitch around the entire perimeter, and on the open sides I pull through skinny ribbon for a tie to close this little book project that I gift to children and friends. Your button tin reminded me of the small tin I inherited from my grandfather, I still have a collection of old buttons, but no children to share them with yet. Thank you for all of your videos that enrich my quiet time.

My new year project has been to join a local quilting group. I am new to quilting but needed a hand quilting/sewing project to take along. Your beautiful 2023 calendar that has adorned my sewing space these past 12 months has been immortalised- I have punched 1” hexagons from nearly every inch of the colourful paper. I am thoroughly enjoying my first taste of hand made quilting with my colourful hexagons ❤.

I made a quilt for my grandson last year using used dryer sheets for a foundation for my scrap fabric. Turned out quite lovely.

This is such a good idea. Often times I use a see through zip lock baggy for my small crochet projects so I can see my items. Your quilted bag is so much more nice & personal for or a take a long bag. Ty for sharing & inspiring. I love this.
I am very new to quilting but have always had a love of cloth and sewing. I can't bear to throw away any scrap of material which can be repurposed, and this project is just the inspiration I need! I want to design a series of fabric wall hangings to hold many of my fiber related tools and supplies which I currently have to root through totes to locate. Happy New Year, everyone on the LGS. Hoping for a healthy, peaceful year ahead for all of us. Love the little pouch and will give it a go in the future. We finally have snow in Marquette in the UP of Michigan! The skiers are happy on the mountain. There was about a foot at my house but about 3 feet up the hill about 7 miles away.😊 💖

That was a very fun video with a really nice finished envelope roll at the end. When you first showed us the white envelope sample I immediately had visions of when I use to diaper my daughter!! That was a fun memory. - Thank you.

That pouch looks handy for many things. It would make a nice gift also. I can see little birds at the bird feeders outside the window behind you (while you were sitting at your sewing machine). It would be lovely to sit by a wood fire again. All electric keeps my house warm; but, there was something very special about sitting by a good warm wood fire (in a wood burning stove) on a very cold, damp, dark day. .
I love that project. A very useful pouch for all kinds of things. I love that you used up such small pieces, it is beautiful.
