    My test-setup:
I use 1mW on the transmitter, 10m distance to a VERY SENSITIVE receiver (Aaronia Spectran HF6065 -150dB! • Aaronia Spectran HF606... ) and take enough samples to get an average.
I measure antennas in their best orientation (vertical for omnis) and the worst (antenna null point "above" the omni antenna).
    Fun fact:
As my test suggests that Lollipop 1 is better than 2 and 3, here I read that Lolli1 was PCB style (like Lumenier AXII) and 2 was spw style. That explains why the Lolli1 was their best antenna - because they cloned a good one :)

@@pusico6555 MMCX: Hi, not neccesarily bad. if the quality of the coax cable is ok, it should perform just fine.
It's not so easy to test different antenna connections. Especially UFL I have no adaptor for.
but even for the cases where I have adaptor cables: they alreday influence the measurement....
So I would need 3 exact same VTX with just different antenna ports ;) but then again I couldnt be sure that all those VTX would be build with the same quality...

Great info as usual Mario. I'm working on a similar (albeit less comprehensive) antenna comparison where I'll be providing information that supplements what you've done (I won't be reinventing your wheel). I'll look at beam-width and axial ratios which are also important factors in antenna design and something that is often overlooked. If you're flying analog FPV, axial ratio is especially important because it determines how effective an antenna is at rejecting reflections.

    • @Rcschim
      @Rcschim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Cool Bruce, cant wait to see your findings. Have you noticed the nice irony here: Foxeer L1 was the best (because it was apparently a clone of Axii) and the newer ones were not so good? I had some doubts with my measurements first - but now it makes sense :)
About beamwidth, SWR and Axial: great idea! One commenter here asked about SWR and the impact. Alex Greve of course knows a thing or 2 about antennas and tested it nice: th-cam.com/video/XCFul9qxvjE/w-d-xo.html
I dont have an SWR meter yet (not sure if the cheap ones are good?) but axial ratio is probbably not so easy to measure?
Curious how you test the beamwidth. greets, Mario

AWESOME job at testing so many antennas, with excellent data analysis and interpretation. Thank you for your hard work and the very important information that you provided to the FPV World. I found your channel by accident, and I'm glad I did. The information you provided will change the way that I select an antenna from now on. No more trial and error, I'll just review your data and find the antenna that best suits my needs. I hope Everyone in the FPV hobby/sport will also be able to find your channel as well. I will definitely spread the word about your channel.

Thanks Conrad, awesome comment as well! It's quite a heavy task to test antennas this way, but I wanted to know for myself how they compare to eachother. Since I almost exclusivly fly with DJI FPV now, I rather thest antennas in that application - and there I measure the resulting Bitrate (which you get in a logfile on the goggles since it's digital). Check my newer videos if you also use DJI antennas - quite some interesting findings there. greets, Mario (and thanks for spreading the word about my channel!)

I've noticed a lot of people like using TPU mounts for vtx antennas that partially or fully cover the active element with TPU. I read a comment from Martin Baert where he stated that TPU has a relatively high dielectric constant and so shouldn't be used as a protector around an antenna active element.
Maybe you could do a controlled signal test with antennas in and out of TPU mounts to see if there is a real world difference?

IRCs little patch was always a fav of mine. They still fair good. But the weird shaped OrqaP1 is also decent.
My measurements with the DJI antennas were not 100% fair tho (once again pol mismatch although this doesnt seem to matter much here).
Next I wanna see how much loss we have if we use pigtails (mmcx-sma) on the copter - or 45°sma adapters on the goggles. MenaceRCs measurements imply that we loose quite a lot there. I thought it's only a lot of loss on really long SMA cable extensions... greets, Mario

From what you have sen with these results. Which antannea would you buy for long range Analogue HGLRC ZEUS VTX 800mW on the quadcopter and on your goggles? The drone has the FrSKY R9. And as an aside, I have found my DJI airunits with the standard antennae on both craft and goggles seems to outperform (distance wise) what I have above in the analogue quadcopter, that has already had a failsafe about 100 meters behind me.

  • @changeagent228
    @changeagent228 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm surprised at the stock DJI antenna result given how well it performs in real flight bitrate performance tests compared with many of the featured antennas. Given the DJI antennas are RP-SMA did you use RP-SMA to SMA adaptors? Because using adaptors will actually lower the performance.

    • @Rcschim

The DJI stock antenna test is not very serious here I have to admit. It was the wrong polarization (but in my DJI tests polarisation mismatch didnt alter the results much).
I will test this more and try to give a better image.
I think tho: with 700mw or more, you can mount a piece of wire of your choice (maybe even a twig) and DJI fpv would get usable videolink anyways :)

The measurement is half scientific, but, sure one of the better
From the spectrum, you have a video cam attached to the VTX, and what is with the ~10 dB drop on ~5,803 GHz?
The RTC705 (VTX) should be able to operate in CW mode (no cam), has a phase noise of ~ -90 dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz offset (good enough to sweep measure with CW)
Combined with the spectrum analyzer (USB control) you can automatize the frequency sweep...
Your measurement is only good as the reference antenna, try to get a reference antenna and a 90 deg hybrid (polarity RHCP/LHCP measurements...)
Comparing gain (signal strength) between antennas that not claim to have the same gain isn't actually fair, of course, an antenna with 13dBi should have a better signal in a "good orientation" than an 8 dBi ...
The really interesting thing is the radiation efficiency and the LHCP/RHCP radiation pattern.
At the end of the day, the best combination is use case dependent (but at least you can pick an antenna with high radiation efficiency and good cross-polar isolation).

      @Rcschim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Wow! Super feedback and comprehensive comment! ;) No idea what the drop around 5.803 was. Maybe a problem on the Spektran? Next time I'll investigate this further (to see if this comes from the clearview VTX).
CW mode just means "black" video (because no cam source attached?). Do you think the image signal noise is already to be seen on the spektran (like if I'd probe the yellow wire of a cam on my oscilloscope?
What kind of reference antenna would you suggest? What's an 90 deg hybrid (coupler?)
You're right, comparing apples to oranges here so to say. But my idea was to show the viewers what kind of difference to expect in real life with different antennas. Be it the same gain and just different results due to quality or different gain and therefore better signal (like nice and easy to understand why 3,6 and 8 turn helicals are better the more turns they have).
Considering all the rules and making this test nearly scientific - would reduce the possible audience to a VERY tiny group of people. So - the more effort - the less views in that case :)
Thanks for the literature - I'll dive into it! Always good to learn new stuff - and RF is definitly a wide field and a lot to understand better for me...

The problem measuring with a video signal is that you get a high trace noise (your measurement deviation is huge) because of the modulation (without sync to measurement device).
In CW mode you need only to track one frequency (that in ideal case don't change in amplitude and phase) you measurement deviation should get to 1k EUR), so you won't probably by one.
You can also make one by you one it's not that hard (but also not ideal), (waveguide) horn antennas are the best because there have a high performance, for example, efficiency can easily reach nearly 100%
There are also methods to extract the polarization performance..... with unknown antennas but that is a big topic and requires a huge amount of measurements.
So to improve the measurement put on the VTX an antenna that at least claims to have high cross isolation and gain in the range of 6-18 dBi

@@tomislavjukic8362 OK, I saw you're working for orqa - that explains why you know a thing or 2 about RF - and that also explains why their products are of good quality!
So the "no cam" on VTX change should be easy and improve my accuracy on the next try.
The weird horn antenna will probbably exceed my test-budget (anytime a "request quote" sits there right next to a product you know you're in trouble if you wanna get it ;)
What about easier alternatives as VTX TX antennas? What about the omni from orqa (the nice one I got with a disc that is screwed onto a coax?)
Or what about a simple Linear antenna?

No, the Omni has a too low gain. You need a directional antenna, your goal is to characterize the antenna, not the surrounding (reflections from the ground, walls ...)
      Found some:
      -KIR-6050 antenna
The drawback is that it has only one polarization (linear)
      -KIR-5800DP
Can be used for linear and circular (requires additional equipment) polarization measurements.
These two should have decent performance and don't cost too much.
