The single largest problem I see is people who fit a patch or other directional antenna and then fly with their head down so that that antenna is simply point at the ground a few yards in front of them. That will *significantly* compromise the integrity of your signal because you're effectively only flying on a single omni and your patch does virtually nothing. If people want to fly with their head down then make sure the patch/directional is angled upwards to compensate so that it is effectively pointing at the horizon.

lol yeah.. I don't understand why people do this.. to me it comes natural to point the head into the sky really... or locate with the ears where the noise comes from.. Iam a musician so I guess it helps to locate audio signals and deal with reflection .. but again.. do people really fly in the sky and basically stare at the ground? not only that.. somebody that builds a quad should basically get the relation between his video signal and where the quad is, and also, how the position of the quad (antenna) relates to that.. basic knowledge if you ask me:)

Your description of rolling shutter effect is incorrect. What you describe (static rotors on a heli) are actually just an effect of a fast shutter speed. Rolling shutter usually produces an angling effect on verticals when using high pan/yaw rates. This can translate vibration into "jello". CCDs don't suffer from this because they have a global shutter so in effect the sensor data is frozen when read, whereas the CMOS reads a row at a time and the image can change between reads causing rows that are offset relative to each other.
    A small point though.

One other tip: Clean your SMA connectors every once and a while.
Especially with cheaper SMA connectors you can get some metal dust or plating ending up in the connector which can reduce performance by quite a lot.
I use alcohol and a q-tip to clean them out.

I realized I don't need to have the newest and best parts. The hobby got a lot cheaper for me when I stopped replacing perfectly good parts just because something 10% better came out. I also stopped buying spare parts. I only build complete quadcopters. I noticed I would buy spares, then something better would come out and I would buy the new stuff and never use the spares. Spare quads are better than less quads and lots of random parts.

Great vid for analog tips! - I still have one Apex and one Alien (all Steele setup) in analog and have rapid fire and FS HDO2 goggles but rarely use them now after converting another Apex and Alien to digital- I just like being able to go further out and behind buildings and through trees with hardly any signal loss and worries. The only thing I don’t like about digital is when you are way far out and get behind a few trees and start seeing lag- but the way I see it is if I was flying my analog quads I would not ever be out that far anyway. I love all FPV but am really enjoying how well I can see with digital. I might just have to pick up a fusion and those antennas tho to give that a try- Steele’s setups have always been awesome in my experience.

My videosignal on both big quads (5S and 6S with Rush Tank Ultimate V2 + foxeer 5) is extraordinary clear and clean.
In my opinion two things are important, a capacitator and the small antenna-cable between the VTX and SMA should not touch anything conductable and it should also not too much bend. A constant curve or ideally a straight line in the antenna cable from VTX to SMA seems ideal. If the cable is too much bend or pressed inside the frame, it will almost definitely touch something which compromises the signal. This setup even works very well with the cheap Eashine EV800D beginners goggles.

This was very specific for me, but my pigtail connector to my antenna broke when i removed it (so im guessing it was about to go bad) so i replaced it, i also switched out the little stubby antenna for one thats 5 inches long, my range went from about 50-100 meters to 1km with these 2 changes. (might be longer, rx is still frsky so i cant test) Obviously if you are doing heavy freestyle you won't want a longer antenna, but if you are just cruising or getting cinematic shots i highly recommend it, the interference is non existent almost and any orientation gives you good signal.

    Here comes the recipe
Totally agreed with your suggestion to do Digital for beginners or ones who doesn't wanna hassle to figure stuff like receiver, antenna etc
I started with Analog and move to Digital for easier experience

I didn’t ever think about cascading regulators and external osd board. But it makes sense to separate video from motor outputs. How do you still measure the voltage? Does your osd module have connection direct to the battery?

thanks for the vids! got all my stuff nailed down after 4 years. Thanks for all the input. Working on a 3rd backup, have 3 spare parts, bout to buy 9 extra motors (stout v3s) so I'm prepared for the drone pocolyps. Fly till I die. :) - you should say buy your stuff ASAP and get some of that panic buy money over the next couple years - then release new stuff. ;) Jk. lol

I only fly 2 Axii Lhcp or 2 Rhcp on my Orqa's with RapidFire. One long vertical and one stubby horizontal with a matching Axii on 5" quads as well as a small Axii on my Kabab Tp3's, Linear polarized and just a Frsky Rx antenna, (forget the name) with the center wire extended to approximately the correct length and I like it.

i use aluminium tape to stick on the back and the sides of the camera reduces alot of noise and gives a analog signal that almost as good as the fatshark hd :) also besides having a good camera good antenna's good vtx , good receiver module ,, ,, you also need good solder joints ,, on the whole quad ,, makes interfearance alot less :)

Hey man, could you please make a video showing in detail how you are powering your electronics? Which regulators are you using, which LC Filter. This is not described on the video description and it would be super nice to know.

  • @daft4682

I'm an electronics engineer. For best power you want the linear regulator as close as possible to your camera, osd, and VTX. The switching regulator can be placed anywhere. On the output of the linear reg, use 0.1uf and 10uf ceramic capacitors with a small aluminum cap, maybe 33uf or so. All caps should be rated to 10v or more. You can also place ferrite beads (also called ferrite chokes) in series with any wire that touches the fc (like your osd telemetry). I don't know the frequency of the noise, but that choke should be tuned as close as possible to the noise frequency. You probabaly need an oscilloscope for that. Cheerio.

Thanks. I've heard that sma connectors are not made to be plugged/unplugged. What do you think about that ?
I have the same video receiver and antennas for years now (rapidfire and vas), so i plugged/unplugged antennas hundreds of time and i think my video reception quality is decreasing. I think i will buy a new receiver and antennas.

4:01: That's simply incorrect. The rolling shutter effect distorts the image, the effect you mention does not. It simply is an aliasing effect produced when the motion of a subject in the image matches with an integer multiplier of the framerate of the camera

    • @MrSteeleFPV

From other trusted testers. Fusion is slightly faster. But over all performance of both is similar if not the same. The user interface on the fusion is pretty damn awesome now

What Cascading Switching/Linear regulator are you using? Oh I found the info down the comments. But what if , dare I say , fly fixed wing...What might I put together to get better filtering? Now my wings are tiny aerobatic and stuffed with fpv goodness. First I will shorten the wire rat nest, then twist.

  • @Magneticitist
    @Magneticitist ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think just tossing a linear regulator after a switchmode is going to get rid of the switching noise. Better to stick to good decoupling and the best low-ripple dc to dc converter possible for the heaviest loads, then maybe separate the smaller ones to come straight off short-run linear regulators.

You know what's weird, without knowing or intention I have ended up with very similar goggle setup, When I first started flying FPV I just used R8, for no reason exactly, however I later learned that because it's outside the 5Ghz WiFi range (It's used for satellites though...) that I get less interference in suburbia...
I'm interested in what you've said about RFI, I have some ideas to reduce noise for RC that I haven't seen anyone talk about, so might wait till I make it work to say what ;)
