    That frame looks so sweet!! You got balls of steel going behind the mountain! That was terrifying! Any idea what your radio link was at? Curious if you had failsafe set to GPS rescue. I remember you had a bad experience with rescue mode.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the comment. Ya failsafe is always set to rescue, but I prefer to rely on throttle and auto level when possible. Not sure about radio link. When the video goes rough I can't read the OSD. I guess now that I have a sdcard blackbox I can look that kind of thing up in the logs. In review of my goggle OSD's, after video loss, I usually see RSSI or link quality going back up very quickly as soon as I can read it. When video goes out, RSSI and link quality often haven't dropped at all yet.

    Are your quads running Betaflight or iNav? Do you think Betaflight RTH is enough to save your gear in an emergency?

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. I only use a basic gps sensor, and betaflight. It's probably not as reliable as depending on Inav to fly your quad home but I like how simple it all is. Since losing a quad due to gps rescue malfuction once 2 years ago, I've switched to mostly using auto level and lots of throttle if I loss video by getting behind something. Depends on how you want to fly as well. If you are skimming the ground and video goes out you may stand a better chance of flying blind for a moment rather than hitting gps rescue and having it abruptly change the quads direction before going to mid throttle no matter what lies ahead.

    • @danieledm0101
      @danieledm0101 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Inav rth works really well, its so precise that the quad it return within few meters from the take off place, that said for the type of flight near cliff and mountain it might still dangerous to relying on the RTH, if fly on land i would totally trust it, in fact i saw videos of guys tick the RTH 40 km aways with their wings

    Right on dude. I just started replicating your build but using caddx vista. Glad you covered the antennas, been struggling with that, its actually my very first build :)

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats great! It's maybe a bit advanced for a first build though. Make sure to get lots of stick time in the simulator before getting a 7" in the air. Practicing quad racing in the sim will really help your reflexes and stick control when you need to make a sudden correction or a save after a mistake. A 7" quad is still tough especially with thick arms but fasteners and standoffs have their limits and the heavy batteries on a 7" long range quad will become a 1lb battering ram in an impact. That all said, just take it easy and figure out ahead of your flight what is reasonable for your level of experience and to maintain safety for all. Try and save the crashing for the sim or 5" freestyle build. Not sure what amount of stick time you have but go with lower rates than you think you should unless quite confident. Mine are all the way down to like 360d/sec for smooth shots. Even lower is fine as well. That way if I use a jerky stick input to avoid a tree branch I don't end up rolling too far to the side and having to make a second correction. Good luck with your build!

    • @RichardNBBarrett
      @RichardNBBarrett 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FalconRadFPV for sure. I have been flying a while but buying and crashing quads I started on 3 inchers and worked my way up to 4, 5 and now 7. This just happens to be the first one I have built, but I do a lot of electronics ebike stuff so it translated well accept the tiny solder joints which it took me a little while to get smooth. I will use low rates. Question - which flies better on long range 4s or 6s and why is that? Any antenna mounting tips for the immortal T and bardpole - do you take polarization into account orientating them? ty love the channel, cant wait to see your frame.

    @falconrad If I can suggest you , I got excellent results by replacing both the video wires . I used an Rg136 coaxial cable from my rush tank and the camera to the FC. No interference , excellent video feed !

    One of the Kings of Long Range! Thanks for the overview. Interested to know your thoughts on what's more important: VRX antenna or VRX module? Asking because I'm reluctant to upgrade my Eachine Pro58 since I'm already running a VAS Crosshair Extreme and an LR TBS Triumph Pro. I'm happy with the range as is, but wondering if an RX upgrade will make any difference.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks! Great question....I personally don't like the over hype of all the latest and greatest, and always buying new stuff. My 3 or 4 year old EV800D are what my spotter uses. With one of my homemade 7 turn helical antennas (I have a video about making it) They lose video a 1 or 2 seconds before me and get it back 1 or 2 seconds after me. This is when I'm flying behind trees or rock when kms out. They have a flyable picture at very far distances. So my rapidfire module does work better but is by no means necessary. The rapidfire is pretty expensive as well. If you are happy with the signal quality you are getting then save your money. If you want a bit more range or to be able to get decent video behind trees at range then try making a 7 turn helical antenna! Maybe use it along with your crosshair extreme. (you need to have a 3d printer or a buddy with one. see my video for more info)

      I might try the DJI setup at some point...the clarity would be nice for flying amongst tree's...maybe someone has an old set of V1's they aren't using anymore, lol..... But I think I'll always be most comfortable doing long distance flights the way I'm used to, good old analog.

  • @jjs-by8ge
    @jjs-by8ge 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Always great content. One question, I am in the beginning stage if getting into long range. All my freestyle stuff uses dji and I love the clarity. Will analog go further than digital ? I know the Chimera 7 have the dji setup on it.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A guy that often comments on my video has mentioned that he has both analog and dji. He prefers the analog for longer range stuff. But what is long range to you? If it's 2 or 3 km then stick with the dji, I think. What does it do when you lose signal? Does it come back right away afterwards? If it takes to long to get a clear signal back that would be a deal breaker for me. Analog video comes back the second you get the interference out of the way.

    • @jjs-by8ge
      @jjs-by8ge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And do you still use crossfire for your control link? I am seeing lots of people switch to ExpressLRS.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm just about to post a video about my control link (still crossfire)
      I plan on doing a video about my rates. Part of my frame idea is that people can fly the exact same setup. I'm going to go through my rates, pid's, filters, gps settings etc... BTW my deg/sec is at about 350 with a soft center stick and 25% expo / receiver tab: auto smothness 25. I'm still playing around with it though. I think I might try less expo and more smoothing.

      oh and I just seen you're using a big 4200mah lipo now. What range and average amp draw do you get out of those? Not sure if I should get some 6s2p li-ion packs or 4000mah lipos

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, all the tpu parts are up on thingiverse under falconrad fpv or aos falcon 7. I've been doing my tuning and field testing with the 4200 and 4000 lipos. My long flights are still with 6s2p li-ion. Just because for me 80% of mountain tops are 5 or 6 km out so I need the range. For stuff like diving the waterfalls (2 to 3 km out) I like to use the lipos for the extra power. I havne't done a "range test" with the lipos. I'm pretty sure I could get 10 or 12 km round trip with one, especially with the 4200, I got 4250 out of mine down to 3.2 volts under load. For over that distance I think the li-ion packs starting seeming like the better choice. I was thinking about testing out 2 x 2600 mah lipos since GNB has got the weights down just under 400g. So two of those would still be lighter than 21700 cell 6s2p and would have far better current performance, but still heavier than 18650 cell 6s2p by 80 or 90 grams.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I forgot to mention, the holes are different. I think the front ones should be spaced out the same so you might be able to use modeling software to just cut off the flat section with the back mounting holes and make a custom addon.

    • @ariafpv
      @ariafpv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FalconRadFPV yeah I'll just remix it to whatever the holes are on mine. I get about 10-12km roundtrip on my GNB 6s 3300mah lipos. They are about 420g I think, which is pretty light. However, they don't really perform that great and sag a lot. Is the new frame about the same weight as the old one or slightly heavier? and btw I'm using freestyle 920deg rates on my 7inch😂I might try lower ones and see how I like it

      It all depends on your interetaion of long distances. I've done 13km flights with 5.5" props and about 7 or 8 km with 5.2" props. I saw a video where I guy got a 50km+ round trip (flying in circles though) with an ultra light 6" quad. If you want to carry a full size gopro a 7" will do better. If you will not be carrying a gopro then you should be able to get pretty far with a 5" and the right battery, prop and motor combination. Only guessing but I would think you could get 5km+ out and round trips of 12km+, further than many dare to go. Losing a quad really sucks!

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, ya I guess it would be optimal to have the antennas as far to the side of the goggles as possible. I go for aiming the same direction with both. The beam width is more than wide enough that you don't require having them pointed in opposing angles unless flying quite close in. At 500m+ out I almost never have an issue pointing the right way, but I do on occasion ask my spotter if my antennas are pointing towards my current quad location to verify. I had been going through frustrating fuzz at about 4km out while trying different antenna setups, usually one helical and one of something else, like an X2 air. As soon as I put the second helical back beside the other one I got about 6km before the fuzz starts. I would try different mounting positions but the double sided tape is so hard to remove and makes a mess, and it works great for any range possible with my li-ion batteries so far.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the telemetry set to on in the configuration tab of BF configurator. Now that I think about it, I used to get telemetry lost messages for my transmitter when I was getting down to a low overall link quality when using the older openTX and crossfire firmware. I'm not sure if maybe upgrading it about 6 months ago had something to do with it (or maybe a different setting on the transmitter?) but this whole summer I haven't heard a telemetry lost warning. Could just be a coincidence. No matter what though, you shouldn't get one at 1km I don't think. I would get them when several kms out. Although distance is irrelevant without line of sight to the quad. If you are 1km away on flat ground then your quad will likely get poor rssi if it's too close to the ground. I'm not actually sure if it's a sign of being near the end of range. Since I hardy ever got it and it only lasted for a few seconds each time, to be safe I took it to mean that I shouldn't push it much further, but often I think it was a brief time of poor antenna alignment possibly. (when I used two horizontal immortal t's instead of an just one and a vertical bardpole.)

    In an earlier video you mention that using an X2-Air is better than using a second helical antenna. Interesting to see you're using two helical antennas here. I'm considering which antennas to get, an MX2-Air vs building my own helical. MX2-Air is pricey but I'm not setup yet to build helical antennas.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I think I damaged my X2-air. It used to work great, but not anymore. BTW the difference between MX2 and X2. I believe the MX2 is for freestyle and and the X2 is more of a long range antenna. The beam width of the X2 is way more than needed for long range. The beam width of the MX2 is even wider which lowers the overall gain of the antenna. The X2 is 13 dbi and the MX2 is 9.5 that is a significant difference as far as range and penetration go. If you want to go really far in one direction the X2-air is the one to get. If you want to go 3 km or less but have the freedom to roam a large area without worry of adjusting your head to reposition the antennas then the MX2-air is a good choice.

    Hello,
    I‘m new to Fpv and i wanna get startet. I researched a lot and I think I understand everything pretty good, but just to make sure: I can attach youre self-made antennas to fat shark goggles, also on a diversity module or does it make no difference if I buy a normal receiver and attach one antenna to it or a diversity receiver and attach two antennas to it. Im asking because I saw that when you use two antennas on youre goggles you use two different. I think it was one linear antenna and one long range. And you use the same antenna two times.
    Kind regards
    Christian
    Edit: Mostly when I ask for the time, a clock is right behind me. After writing this text I saw that you can also combine two Omni or two Patch antennas. So if my thoughts are correct until here, this leads me to another question, are these selfmade antennas omni or patch ?
    And the reason why I am writing this not under the video with the antennas, I just fear that no one reads my comment under a video which is a few months old. :)

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a omni and a patch (or helical) for short range and two of the same helical antennas together for long range. A diversity receiver will switch from one antenna to the other picking the one with the best signal. It's not required but does improve video performance in many situations.

When I get up to 6s2p 21700 li-ion packs the weight is so much that the returns are much lower. its 8000mah but I only get about 2.5km / 2.8km per 1000mah. That's all with a full size gopro, the frame is designed to always carry a full size gopro. I use the lipo for shorter range stuff that works better with more amps available, like diving the waterfalls. It's mid range and nice to have all the amps I need for pulling out of dives. The 6s2p li-ion packs work fine as well I just pull up a hair sooner to be safe. I use the li-ions for all my longer flights.

    Thanks a lot for the insights👌🤘 Quick question about the true rc singularity on flywoo.. I saw that the true rc has just 1,9 db gain and the flywoo atomic has 3 db gain? Shouldn‘t the atomic outperform the true rc due to the gain?🤔

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think of it like this a patch has a gain of 10dbi but you don't want one on a quad because it's directional. An omni like the atomic or singularity tries to do the opposite, have no direction. The high quality singularity makes an almost perfect circle for its reception area.
      To have a higher gain you have to sacrifice a portion of that perfect circle. The atomic probably has weak spots on the top and bottom of it's radiation pattern. Fine if you cruse around between level and 45 degrees tilt like a lot of people do with the explorer. But if you do dives or complex maneuvering at long range you want an antenna with a perfect circle and no weak spots.

    Why not mount antenna's on the front for video instead. This way when you loose signal turning around gives a boost. Also would give it better LOS in a dive since we are generally below the aircraft.

    • @FalconRadFPV
      @FalconRadFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the quad pitched forward for regular flight, having a long antenna in the rear is the optimal position. It's a standard for the long range community. As for in a dive I'm never underneath, always back a ways for much better line of sight. When pitched forward a lot for a dive an antenna in the rear is perfectly positioned to transmit every direction except towards the cliff, as long as you have a really good VTX antenna with no dead spot on top.

      I bought my orqa goggles just before the dji system was released. Also when dji video cuts out it, I hear it takes too long to come back on. Analog comes back on the instant you get signal back.
