    I moved into a very small room when I made Sergeant in the Air Force. But I was glad to finally get a place without a roommate, and the room had a cool tall vaulted ceiling. I built my own space-efficient furniture instead of using military-issue furniture. I built a loft along one side of the room. On top was my bed with storage cabinets behind it. Under it was a booth-style table and a computer desk. The opposing wall was filled with a bookcase that included two built-in dressers. The whole project turned out awesome. But I guess I made the place too nice. Whenever some VIP (such as a general or a politician or foreign military members) visited the base, they got to see my room as part of the base tour.

    • @LucidDreamer54321
      @LucidDreamer54321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      One clarification: I didn't build the dressers. I bought them and then designed the bookcase. I did build everything else in the room because I needed specific sizes.

      @@sarahcicle8592 Perhaps!
      The bed I grew up in had guard rails all away around the bed so there was no way even as an adult, that I could lift the mattress off and replace the sheets.
      You better believe I developed some amazing ab muscles and great balance trying to figure out how to change them without breaking my neck.
      I love the convenient space-saving of lofts but there's two big issues to them: the sheets are difficult to change even without full guards, and accessibility is a huge issue if you get sick. I got the flu one year as an adult while visiting my parents and I was stuck in that bed for the entire time. My dad had to lift me over his head and out of the bed to get to the restroom because I didn't have the breath to climb the ladder.

    The elevated bed is actually quite genius. When I get away from renting apartments I'll definitely try to do that. My current studio apartment is tiny as it is so I have almost no extra room and certainly no space for building stuff, having one of those beds with a desk underneath it would've been a good start in hindsight but I just have a futon style bed that stays permanently unfolded into a bed
    I've also always liked the idea of a canopy bed, particularly in the summer because of mosquitoes and blocking out light, maybe I can have an elevated bed and mount some kind of curtain system onto the roof. Adding a future bed project onto the list for sure

    Like, seriously: "So she lived on a boat for a while. Then she became famous by building intentionally shitty robots. Then she was employed by one of the guys from Mythbusters, she dealt with having a brain tumor, Kickstarted a cool light-up calendar, turned a Tesla into a pickup truck, and currently she builds quirky things on TH-cam." is simultaneously a description of Simone's channel history and a pitch for a Clarissa reunion special

    This has been sitting in my "watch later" list for ages. It's so good! Totally agree that beds waste floor space. We actually use a Japanese floor mattress in my house, so we fold it away in the daytime and have a bigger living space. It's great. I had a loft bed as a child though, super fond of those too.

    I've used a jigsaw before, but that thing is really cool! That sanding must have taken forever with all those little curved shaped. I probably would have just done paint rather than felt, but that's really cool! I definitely agree with under-bed storage, and I love how a lot of frames have drawers underneath (I found one I really like at IKEA that's still easy to get up on with my hypermobile hips), and I also love bed frames with shelves in the headboard, but that does make the thing longer. My bed takes up almost half my floor space due to that extra 10" or so of cupboards in the headboard.

      Yeah, even with a regular bed you can put some blocks under the feet or buy risers to get a little more height to fit storage bins underneath. Hers has a ton more space, though (if you don't mind literally climbing into bed).
