I was given 4 neon tetras and a 10 gallon tank. I purchased and quarantined 6 more to make a group of ten neons. Then I was given a glow betta that seemed depressed or lonely. What a very nice surprise, that they all live together in joyful harmony! going on 7 months.

    • @Qarnifex
      @Qarnifex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

A betta is only depressed if it is in a terrible environment. They prefer solitary life. They’re never lonely.

@@ML-ov7wo It kinda depends upon the Betta. They do tend to vary in their temperment where some can live in a community, while others can be fine with solitary. As well if you have them in their tank first and introduce others after they can get very territorial

Thanks for the content, I have been obsessed lately with the history of this fish. During the depression one neon would sell for enough to buy a house, but we didnt know how to breed them so there were guys that were like literal indiana Jones braving the jungle and being murdered trying to find the secret fishing holes that housed neons. Once they were found they had to be transported back to the US alive all at a time when an aquarium heater was a job and not a piece of equipment.... Someone really should make a movie....

45 ears ago I had a 4ft aquarium that was well planted and I had about 24 Neon Tetras, about 20 Glowlight tetras, and about 8 head and tail light tetras, and a few small catfish as the clean up crew. I miss that aquarium, it was mesmerising watching the schools of Neons and Glowlights swimming around, sometimes all together as 1 school, sometimes as species separate schools…I had no difficulty keeping them healthy. Water is soft in that area, and clean, and in the aquarium with the plants slightly acidic. Neons and Glowlight tetras are some of the most under rated fish, they are beautiful in a big schools.

Usually soak my spider wood and what not for about 2 weeks before adding, I'm also talking with a out 4 months if experience in fish keeping so far. I learn quick. My lives sustained compared to lost are better. I lost 4 Cory Dora and 4 shrimp and 1 Betta sustaining 2 Cory Dora 5 shrimp 1 Betta 5 neon tetra and 2 mystery snails right now. Adding 6 more albino Cory's 8 more shrimp and 11 more neon tetra. Two different tanks though.

This is great. I’ve had me neons and cardinals with kuhli loaches a betta nerite snails. All got along great. They key to the betta is to introduce them last. Give the other stock time to acclimate and find their space. Also having several neons allows them to school which makes it difficult for the betta to single one out. But it always will rely on your bettas personality. ❤️❤️

I recently returned to the hobby and put 10 neon in a cycled 20 gallons with a betta and pygmy corydoras. Parameters were good and there was no bullying. The betta didn't even care. The pH is around 7. Yet, I had 60% neon mortality within the first week. I love them, but I gave up on them and got glowlight tetras and harlequin rasboras and, so far, all of them are doing fine.

    Hey Jason,
I enjoy watching your posts. I’ve kept the same Neon Tetras for over 12 years. I even had them reproduced many times. I moved across the country, so I sold the aquarium, stand, equipment, and all the livestock in it. I was even lucky enough to grow beautiful Freshwater Sponges. I had no idea there was such a thing. At first I threw the Sponges away, because I had no idea what they were. I took a sample of the Sponge to my LPS. They knew what it was, and purchased all my sponges from my tank. It was kind a scary, because it was growing so quickly. My Tetras lived a whole life. I even had a nasty Neon Tetra that was very aggressive. This Neon would kill other fishes not relate to Neon Tetras. When I sold the tank, I only had Neon Tetras and some a handful of Otocinclus Catfish. This nasty Neon was biggest Neon Tetra I ever had. He was the boss in the tank, until it died a week or so before I sold the tank. Thank you for sharing.

Neons are awesome fish but when described, no one seems to mention that they are known to be fin nippers. I added six neons to a tank that had only a Honey Gourami and a Mystery Snail. Within a week, the Gourami’s “feelers” and the snail’s tentacles were damaged. I couldn’t find them anymore because they were hiding from the neons. The neons went back to the LFS and the Gourami and snail couldn’t be happier…and healthier.

Question - I have a 10 gallon planted aquarium that currently has a single nerite snail and 15 cherry shrimp. Do you think with what I already have in the tank, plus the 4 neon's I just brought home, that would it be alright to eventually add 2 more neon's so that I have that minimum of 6 total or do you think that would be too much for the size of the tank with what I have in it? Thanks!

Shrimp have a very small bio load, so that shouldn't overload the cycle if you take care of it. The neons will probably eat some of the shrimplets when the shrimp start to breed.

One thing I learned about tetras is that they like to mimic other tank mates. I had neons with guppies and they picked the ground and swam everywhere with the guppies. I had them with just corydoras and they stayed lower picking the ground like a corydora. Hopefully somebody has had the same temperament and behavior, otherwise I just sound crazy lol.

I'm trying to convince my husband for some Neon Tetras. The reason why is because I think it's time he moves on from the death of one of our Dumbo bettas. I can't blame him, we did what we could and he suddenly fell ill. We tried getting leaves but the ones that were delivered were basically small and looked like normal leaves. Regardless of our efforts, he didn't make it.
So after a few months I've convinced him to buy a betta and some neon tetras since he's decided to upgrade the tank to ten gallons. If things with the neon tetras and our bettas don't work out we'll be either keeping them in a different tank or returning.

Recently I bought 14 from a reputable online seller along with danios and rasboras. Two neons were DOA and the rest didn't last a week in the medicated quarantine tank. Pretty sure they were just too small to be shipped across country. Think I also lost one danio along the way but everyone else seems to be happy.

Hi Jason, I just subscribed to your channel, get information. I have a planted 75 gallon and have mainly neon tetras, along with a few platys. All my levels are perfect. My KH is a 4, but my GH is 13. My GH is a 13 in both my 75 gallon and quarantine tank. My gold fish tank is a GH of 8. PH is 7.2-7.4 for all my aquariums
I have had no issues with 75 gallon with and gold fish tank. Fish are doing great. I’m just concerned about future issues. But I’m losing neons in my quarantine tank when I first buy them. After watching your video, I figure it must be the high GH.
    Do you have any suggestions.

My mbuna have typically left them alone. If I were going to add them now I would add them with the lights off. When the lights do turn on I would wait a few minutes for them to wake up and feed the tank.
