Romar has been doing this same shit for years. We're the #210 program in the country BECAUSE of Romar. He acquires a great class every year, but he has no idea how to coach even tiny defensive basics. Romar is a great guy who has held his job through his consistent character, the way players love him, the way he gives the program a moral backbone and helps young men into the draft, and how he attracts top talent to Montlake. But he is a terrible coach. This is a continuation of a long-standing trend where Romar recruits well, then absolutely fails with them. And we're tired of it.
We have kept the #82 recruit in the country, Jaylen Nowell, who ACTUALLY WANTS TO PLAY FOR UW and didn't just buy into Romar's sales pitch of future NBA success. He wants to be a Husky and that's more valuable to the team. We've also recruited two extremely underrated local guards, Michael Carter III and Nate Pryor, who will be solid 4 year players, the type of players Romar thought he was too good for but who will pour their hearts out into the program. And our new coach is a solid Xs and Os guy who will TEACH DEFENSE.
None of the Husky faithful give a shit about the one and done Porter brothers who only committed to UW because Romar gave their dad a job. We don't give a shit about Blake Harris who just wants the quickest path to the NBA. Admittedly Daejon Davis hurts because he was a talented local guy, but we're in good shape for next year. We need Noah Dickerson to stay, and if he does, we have lots of young guard depth, including David Crisp who was a great shooting guard last year, a good starting 3&D player in Matisse Thybulle, and pretty okay big man depth with Dickerson/Timmins/Dirusseau. AND WE WILL BE BETTER. Players like Matisse Thybulle, Carlos Johnson, and Sam Timmins should be great defensive players once our new coach shows them how it's done.

also you have a great point with the two underrated guards. they can fill in Fultz' spot. we have a great coaching staff too. I believe we can be decent this year.

Honestly Washington was just too bad for him not to be fired. The Pac 12 isn't too great and there is no excuse to not pick up more than 2 conference wins with the best player in the country.

WDB Mike Hopkins is a great coach. Trust me I'm a Syracuse fan he knows what it takes.
He's doing alot with one of the least talented rosters in the pac recruiting wise...pretty much the opposite of Lorenzo Romar his zone defense is a great scheme

The old coach needed to go, how do you have nba players like Dejounte Murray, Marquise Chriss, and Markelle Fultz walk into your program and not squeak out 10 wins in a season. That’s on the coach sorry not sorry
Romar was a phenomenal recruiter. Not the best coach. However, I think they should have gave him one more year, build the program with high level recruits, and then re-evaluate after that season. Cause if Romar couldn't get to the tourney with that recruiting class coming in then yes, he shouldn't be coaching. Just my opinion.

Don't just what ballislife video do your research and look up how many shots gelo shoots and how many he misses

I'm with you. If UW was gonna be bad at some point, they should've just got an exciting season with a #1 recruit before they decided to change the look of the program. Exposure would've been better for them on all fronts. They could've waited a year
Despite losing all that talent, UW has already won more games than last year and it's only half way into the season. Shows how bad Romar was (he coaches like it's 1990 and always plays 2 big men despite the spacing issues).

Romar was a fantastic recruiter but when it came down to x's and o's he was brutal which is why he was fired. If UW didn't pull the plug this year it was gonna be next year imo.
They also still have Jaylen Nowell, Michael Carter, and Nate Pryor coming in next season.

I disagree with you on many fronts. Firing Romar was a good decision for the school. Romar was a players coach, which is why I'll always respect him. He got kids from point A (highschool) to point B (NBA). He's done it year in year out for his whole UW career. But Romar DID NOT WIN GAMES. Firing him is a good move for the future of the program that will become evident.
Oh yeah, also you were wrong about Daejon Davis decommitting because of Romar being fired. He decommitted well over a year ago.

Every UW fan is supportive of him being fired. Terrible video. He would've been a one and done player anyway! Romar gets talent EVERY YEAR but can't do anything with it. It's not just about recruiting, you need a good coach to get wins. Give romar one more shot? He hasn't made the playoffs in like 8 years with talent EVERY YEAR. This video infuriates me as a fan.

There was talk of Jontay reclassifying to 2017 too...Just look at Nathan Hale, scrub program last year then spent a good chunk of the season as the top HS program on national rankings. Firing should have happened next year if UW didn't at least make the tourney.
Politics is in everything now days, but if i were a coach or athlete i wouldn't compromise my reputation for money,fame,power. When people do fake it to make it USUALLY when the truth comes out they hurt themselves as well as others too. Bad Bad Move by UW, somebody else got a favor by this coach losing his job. Just because they had a good recruiting class doesn't mean they will go to the elite 8 after a sub 10 win season, look at LSU with Ben Simmons and Antonio Blakney in C/O 2015
The AD of UW probably knew something. If they would have gotten that recruiting class, combined with the great recruits the football team has recently got. There's a guarantee that the NCAA would start an investigation on the school.
Romar isn't a good coach, he has refused to play the new style of basketball(threes, fast playing, positionless bigs) with Fultz he couldn't even coach his team to a tournament birth. He often plays 2-3 slow bigs at once with only one maybe two ball handlers. He deserves to be jobless

It's not doubt that Ro Mar is the best recruiter in the country but he THE shittiest coach of all time. Everybody in the state of Washington knew it was just a matter of time before Ro mar got fired because UW is top 5 in the country for NBA draft picks under Ro Mar but yet hasn't made the NCAA tournament since isiah Thomas days
The guy could recruit but was a horrible coach. His old school approach with his bigs is a joke. He's had loads of talent in the past and it's never translated. Not sure how this is the worst decision the program could have made when you said it yourself, rated 210... Even with that talent. I'd rather win than have a few guys every few years with NBA talent and lose.
Romar did turn the program around way back, but in the long run it's a good idea.
Romar had the team running and playing like an AAU team, romar needed to go he wasn't coaching defense and just letting players go at it.
Imagine this squad makes the NCAA tournament and uw makes the sweet 16, then they can't fire romar and have a few more years of mediocrity.
Mike Hopkins has brought in some solid recruits. Gonzaga will dominate basketball in the state of Washington in the foreseeable future but let’s forget how Robert Franks is carrying that Wazzu team on his back
As a UW student. It was a good idea to fire the Head Coach. It was either now or never. The 2-16 record was just too bad to overcome. Even with Fultz, the team looked terrible. I rather have a good team that can at least have a chance in the Playoffs over having the number 1 recruit in the country.
You said tournament teams make a lot of money. UW hasn't been to the dance in 6 years. Romar recruits talent, but he's unable to do win with it. He might help players get ready for the NBA, but like you said, it's in UW's best interest to make the tournament, and the Romar was hasn't done that. In 15 years with him as the head coach, UW made the tournament 6 times.

By far one of the worst decision UW could have made. Yes Coach Romar hasn't lived up to expectations these past few years to say the least but he's been able to get some great players to come. Now having this class come to the program might have given them that boost to get back to a top school in basketball. These guys dropped the ball on this one... Being from Seattle seeing this just sucked to watch it all fall...

my first introduction to seein dude play was dennis smith making him look absolutely dumb 1v1 two years ago, dude was scared to dribble, so all the hype surrounding dude is lowkey confusing to me, and everyones surprise about how good dennis smith is is confusing to me

why does it matter, if they lost michael porter..he's probably going to the nba after his first year in college. it wouldn't have done the program well in the future. obviously it would be good to have the top recruit in the nation. but that would probably be like the season ben Simmons had in lsu . very frustrating and long.

Lorenzo Romar kind of deserved to be fired. He had the best player in the country and his team was lackluster. Also romar had been known to use an outdated system, where he puts a lot of big guys on the floor, and gives them a ton of minutes. This is problematic for obvious reasons, and is part of the reason why they were so bad this year.
