In case you didn't mention it, when the T-1000 transformed into someone and that same person he turned into was in the same scene with him, the T-1000 was played by that person's twin sibling. The cop that he turned into in the hospital was a twin and when he transformed into Sarah, he was played by Linda Hamilton's twin sister (may she rest in peace).

He honestly worked so hard for this movie. He trained himself to shoot without blinking because he said "robots would never blink". He also took track in high school so he actually had to slow down in the parking garage where he's chasing down John Connor on the motorbike because of the fact he kept catching up with him so they had to redo the scene.

It was one of the most terrifying, powerful scenes ever put to film, all the more so when you remember the context. For the steel factory scene where the T-1000 melts after being frozen and comes back together, they didn't use Mercury for the metal. That would have been far too dangerous. Mercury is actually quite toxic. Instead they used Gallium, which has similar properties to Mercury, without many of the toxic effects. It's so interesting that Jen went into this blind. The trailer spoiled the fact that Arnold was the good guy, so it ruined the surprise. I was lucky enough to watch this in the theaters when I was a kid. I wish I could fully articulate just how insane those stunts and special effects were back then. It truly heralded the beginning of the 90's action movie genre. The director's commentary and behind the scenes production footage are definitely worth watching; there are so many cool little details that went into this. Linda Hamilton trained extensively for the movie; that one-armed reload scene at the end was added specifically because she'd become strong enough to do it. She also smacked that mental hospital orderly with the broom handle for real, because the actor kept on holding back and ruining the previous takes. She also learned how to pick locks just for the escape scene. Arnold nearly broke his fingers when he tried doing that shotgun twirling trick and picked up the wrong prop. When they filmed the helicopter sequence, they really did fly it under the overpass; almost everyone was too afraid to try it because of how insanely dangerous it is, but the stunt pilot stepped up and did it _twice._ There are several more stories like this, so look them up sometime if you want. Edit: Also, I love that YuYu Hakusho shirt. It's one of my favorite anime series!

    • @BiggestDawgEver
      @BiggestDawgEver ปีที่แล้ว +5

Even Arnold was giving away the "surprise" on talk shows like the tonight show, which was a shame given that you can tell by how it's set up that we(the audience) clearly weren't suppose to know until the T-800 said: "Get down!".

But he can't take back T2's marketing campaign. They _did_ keep it a secret for nearly all of the marketing campaign, including the teaser and the first trailer. They revealed the existence of two Terminators in that first trailer, but deliberately kept it ambiguous which one was supposed to be the protector. Seriously, go back and watch the first trailer. For the scene where the semi-truck flips over, Cameron wanted a roll cage installed in the cab just in case something went wrong. The stunt coordinator assured him that this type of stunt had been done often and it wasn't necessary, but Cameron insisted. Sure enough, when they shot the scene, the entire cab did indeed collapse, and the only thing that saved the stunt performer from serious injury or death was the roll cage. They say Cameron is fairly meticulous about safety on his movie sets, and I'm sure that stunt performer is glad that he is.

2 fun production trivias that make this masterpiece even greater:
At 13:19 none of the camera crew wanted to film the scene because they were too afraid of the falling debris and chunks of concrete.
So James Cameron took the camera and shot it himself.
At 35:05 they actually flew a real helicopter over and under bridges, through passages and into the rear end of a truck.
No CGI. No wires. No models.
And now you won't ever need to watch another action movie for the rest of your lives, because you just saw the greatest there is, there was and there ever will be.

I like the family theme of this movie. Its something James did with Aliens and he brought it back here with T2. There's also the theme of change with all main characters changing for the better. John learning that his mother wasn't insane and growing into the role of being responsible. Sarah learning to trust a machine, Arnold actually developing humanity and even Dyson going from this curious man whose alternative self brought about the doom of mankind taking responsiblity for his actions and trying to fix his mistakes. This movie is just pure escapism and a masterpiece of a sequel. Films these days don't quite reach the heights T2 delivered.

Cameron has always nailed universal themes like family and love. People give the Avatar movies a lot of shit but I really enjoyed the family dynamics in Avatar 2.
I also think he's a better storyteller than he gets credit for. He tells his stories incredibly sincerely and earnestly which is something we just don't get in movies nowadays. At 32:20 in your video you gave the roughly one second summary of the T-101's (Arnie's) destruction spree with the cop cars.
What got me after I rewatched this scene a few times was the total: "Human casualties: 0.0"
Not a full integer like 21 or something like that, but with decimal places behind the number. So he actually calculates injuries that put people out of combat as decimal points.
It also took the time to register all potential kills and injuries.
Another interesting little detail of all the many HUD info screens you can get when watching through the T-101's interface.
During the intro-scene when the bearded biker blew the cigar smoke into Arnie's face, it instantly displayed 'carcinogenic aerosol detected' (or something similar).
All of that detail that you wouldn't even have a chance to notice on VHS at the time as the stop-scene hold was usually jittery as crazy. So they put it in despite knowing that potentially only future display technology would be able to make this visible to audiences. All of these split second details.
Yet they STILL did it. THAT'S what I call dedication to detail.

You should check out the game Terminator: Resistance pretty much what Terminator Salvation should've been set before the events of the movie's Future War but by the end crossing over. I do like Terminator Salvation but the film has a very different Judgement Day heavily inspired by the May Transformers movies which I personally don't mind but the setting is just so uninteresting and generic post apocalyptic. But there's a lore reason this being the relay of Judgement Day to July 25, 2003 which is why Salvations has a more 2000s feel to it yet doing away with the more 1980 retro futurism aesthetic and technology from the original Future War. Plus it's was set directly after judgement day so naturally it's not going to be as Sci Fi but I Personally just never cared for it's dull setting. But the game is a blast and feels 100% like the movies from music to visual to sound design everything feels like a follow up to the first film.

On the dirt bike chase sceen the Robert Patrick trained so well running they had to ask him to slow down because he kept catching the bike while on foot. Lol he also trained to not blink especially while firing the gun because terminators wouldn't be surprised.

It doesn't answer that question in the extended version. In the theatrical he says that the more contact he has with humans the more he learns. Period. In the extended the dialogue is CHANGED to be sent out set to "read only." Meaning he only follows orders. He doesn't think or learn. She even says "they don't want you to do too moch thinking huh." And then they reset it. Basically, in the theatrical version it doesn't need to be reset. It doesn't get points for answering a question it only creates in the extended version. And he knows it's Sarah in the theatrical because one is saying "come here....help, John." And the other one says "get out of the way, John." It's a stronger character moment because he knows his mother well enough to know which one is real. The real Sarah Connor wouldn't call him back for help. I used to think the extended was better but as I've gotten older I've gravitated towards the theatricals of this and Aliens over the longer ones. But that's just me. They just feel leaner and tight as a drum. I'm just simply saying that they don't show you answers that the theatrical doesn't give you. Because the footage is slightly different the extended one actually creates a situation where it needs the extra footage. Both versions answer the same things just in different ways..

22:57 is the tail end of one of my favorite practical effects illusions in any movie ever. It's a shot that's only in the directors cut, but it's really awesome. It looks like the Terminator is sitting in front of a mirror while Sarah and John open up his head to get the chip, but if you think about it logically, there's no way to shoot that for a couple reasons, namely the mirror would show the camera and crew in the reflection, and Arnold Schwarzenegger (probably) doesn't have a metal head with a computer chip in it. Here's how it's done. The mirror isn't a mirror, it's a hole in the wall with a frame around it. The Arnold sitting in the foreground with John and Sarah is a dummy with the hole in its head. The real Arnold is sitting in the 'reflection' with Linda Hamilton's twin sister and Edward Furlong's stunt double. They worked out the timing of removing the bolts in the Terminator's head, with the reflection version just miming what they were doing to the dummy. That way, the camera can pan around to the hole in his head all in one master shot.... and they didn't even use it in the theatrical cut.

It's extremely impressive how well they made the effects back then, considering the "potato computers" we had back then (something like a 386 pc's were the norm at the time I think).
They were just really smart in how they used the computing power and had to create programs to do these things from the ground up (there are clips of them doing it on youtube somewhere).

I upgraded from an 8086 to a 386sx in '91, I think (I had a limited budget and was definitely not running top of the line)... so yeah, as I recall, 386 was more or less standard, although 486 was around by then... and it was still unusual for most people to HAVE home computers at the time. I think the number was around 15% of households in '90 and it didn't top 50% until around '99 or 2000.

My favorite little "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" moment is that during the helicopter chase, the T-1000 has four arms.

Saw this in the cinema and the part where Sarah has a nightmare and the nuclear explosion incinerates her flesh off her bones was the scariest part. Also where the T-1000 hides in plain sight on the tiled floor shows the terminator has stealth and can use those tactics to kill, which elevated the threat from him in the rest of the movie.

I just want a series where Jenn reacts to the times Holden makes faces to the camera without her noticing

There are a lot of little touches in this movie that are easy to miss. For instance, in one shot where the T1000 is flying the helicopter, he has 3 arms.

Fun fact, sometimes people who do other jobs on movies get small roles in films. Here are some examples in this movie.
The guy taking pictures of terminator at the mall, James Cameron‘s cowriter
The Guard Sara beats up just before hitting Silverman‘s arm and getting the “Rooter Poison” that was the stunt coordinator for the Film.
The second security guard at the cyber dine building, who finds the first one tied up in the restroom. Eddie Furlongs acting teacher/coach for the film

Would definitely like to see you guys watch T3 and Salvation. While it seemed like it was finally over in T2, the third installment gave a good reason for why the threat of Skynet still lingers, and the fourth installment Salvation brings in a concrete performance by Christian Bale and Sam Worthington that makes it my favorite in the series! :)
