So incase you're wondering why the poster stayed on screen even after the movie started, we were determined to keep Sarah's narration at the start but YT just kept marking it with copyright, and for some bizarre reason, plastering a poster on top of it fixed it.

In the official novelization of T2, the epilogue reveals that elderly Sarah hired a private detective to find out what happens to Kyle Reese in the new timeline she created. She learned that he's married with a family living an ordinary peaceful life. Sarah didn't try to contact him because it would be pointless and because she didn't want to disrupt his life, but she was just glad to know that he's safe and happy. When the American Film Institute made a list of 100 Greatest Movie Heroes and Villains, Arnold's Terminator made it onto both the heroes and villains lists. Jodie Foster (who was one of the Institute members who voted him onto the heroes list) said that the character is compelling because "He's the monster who wants to be good." I found that kind of touching.
They DID actually fly that helicopter under the bridge. The stunt was so dangerous, the cameraman refused to film it. James Cameron grabbed the camera and filmed it himself.
yeah the pilot, who ever he was, obviously made a decision that day. he was ether gunna make the most amazing shot ever to be captured on film or die in a blaze of glory trying.

The actor who played dyson actually had a collapsed lung once and used that experience to realistically portray his death. The shorted breathing was a very realistic death scene.
Ok I guess he went into a shock of sort (which can happen) because I had collapsed lung about 2 years ago and a horrible pain in my chest aside I experienced nothing like that.
As somebody who has come out of surgery and woken up with breathing issues, Dyson's breathing there at the end kinda gave me flashbacks ... a little bit scary, actually. I guess maybe that time left me with a touch of PTSD (had to really focus to type this, 'cause I kept on flashing on the movie-scene and the hospital episode). Wow. Weird.
Robert Patrick literally gave it all for T 1000. Dude did not only blink but pushed himself to be in a peak physical condition. In the scene where he is chasing John in the bike by running after him, he literally had to slow down because he caught up to him the first few takes.
Not only that but he trained himself to breath shallowly while full sprinting because a robot wouldn't be out of breath or look physically tired from running.

When T2 first released, the previews and marketing completely spoiled the "Arnold is the protector this time" subversion. But when reactors view it, they have not seen the spoiler material and this comes as a surprise discovery as the writers intended. It's one of the most fun parts of watching a T2 reaction.
@@whirl3690 Agreed. All the times where John teaches Arnie new things makes more sense. The glitching at the factory is great. Not sure I like the alternate ending as much though. It does inadvertently stick the middle finger up at the sequels which is appreciated.

Sorry, but I find it hard to believe that they had no idea that Arnie was the good guy. I legit didn't actually see this movie until 2021, but I knew pretty much the entire plot as it's such a huge part of pop culture.
Robert Patrick makes a fantastic villain in this, the fact he never once breathes on screen just gives him an unnatural look thats hard to place and is unsettling
What made the T1000 scary was more Robert Patrick's acting that the CGI. He made it really robotic, emotionless, he never blinks, never smile except once when the situation asks for it. The way he moves, walks, talks, stares, everything was robotic.
You're right. There is a scene where he beats up Arnold, he only used the minimum muscle groups to deliver the hits, so efficient and robotic, pure precise movements. To me, the greatest robot acting ever 👍
Yeah this alternate ending felt odd. The theatrical ending was perfect the way it is. The voiceover from Sarah caps off the movie perfectly, while mirroring the open ending of the first film. Once we see the shot of Sarah comforting John, it cuts to a shot of a dark road from the POV of the front of a vehicle. "The unknown future rolls toward us. I face it for the first time with a sense of hope. Because if a machine-- a Terminator, can learn the value of human life, maybe we can too."
I like the future ending as much as the normal ending. Not just because in retrospect it puts a finality to the series that it should have had, based on the junk that followed, but it also ties into Sarah’s voiceovers throughout the film. Plus I like that we get a positive finality out of it that tells the viewer that they defeated Skynet, which never ultimately came into existence or destroyed the world.

I love that entire Pescadero escape sequence. It has such an incredibly tense energy to it. Sarah's escape attempt, John and the Terminator arriving to break her out, the T-1000 giving chase, and how everything converges into a running battle is so fantastic.
Sarah Connor is one of the most well written female heroines of all time, and one of the most beloved. Now you guys can see what we older fans grew up with, a woman who knows what needs to be done and gets it done!
Exactly! We don't need flawless Mary Sue's! Sarah Connor is a horribly flawed and broken individual, but it's perfectly fitting given everything she's been through! She's strong, tough, and resourceful, because she has to be, but things don't always work out for her on the first try just because she's a girl boss. Take Sarah's escape for example. You know for a goddam fact that she's been perfecting that escape for years, improving the plan across every failed escape attempt, which Dr. Silberman mentions.
@Krister L Nowadays, much CGI is simply used as a cost-cutting measure. And to cut production costs even further, movie studios often turn to not very convincing formulaic CGI. The results then look more cartoonish than realistic.
@@rookmaster7502 I feel like cgi is also often used as a way to achieve impossible camera moves... It does tend to distract me a little bit, especially when that camera move is unneccessary and just for show. My brain usually interjects with a "there's no way to have a camera do that move, so this is computer generated, I wonder how MUCH of it is computer generated......" and so on and so forth. Distracted!
@@jkhoover It wasn't Cameron that created the effects though, the CGI was ILM/Industrial Light & Magic that was founded by George Lucas. The practical effects were Stan Winston. Other companes were also involved. Of course, for CGI they spent far more time creating the effects, and altering code etc, so despite the less capable computer side, much more human effort/attention to detail was involved. From memory there was only a few minutes of actual CGI in the movie though, aside from practical effects, some of it was simpler computer effects such as morphing. One bit always stuck out though, I think Cameron hated it, when the T1000 was dragged behind the car around a corner, and it was clearly just a dummy.
"see this helicopter going under a freeway overpass? that’s a helicopter going under a freeway overpass.” - james cameron fun facts: yes it's a real stunt. the pilot is actually the person that the T-1000 told to get out of the helicopter a few minutes earlier in the movie. the normal camera crew felt the stunt was too dangerous to film and refused to do it, so james cameron filmed it himself.
That's a HELL of a stunt, but the shot that REALLY does it for me is when the chopper 'pops up' over the overpass at the last moment==that looked so close to disaster, it really made me hold my breath.
That was a great scene. The only other scene I remember that had a helicopter doing stunts between buildings in a city is Blue Thunder. Needless to say, the only stunts you will see like those now are CGI. No way would directors get away with doing that.
"Hercules In New York" was Arnold's first movie. Yes, they actually flew a copter through an overpass. Also, few people notice that when the T-1000 first takes control of the copter, he has three arms.
Miles Dyson was played by Joe Morton, and I totally understand your reaction to his death scene here. He's so good, this movie made me a lifelong fan. He's one of those character actors who, when he shows up in something, I audibly go, "Joe Morton?! Oh HELL yes!"
He was in Godzilla: King of the Monsters as an older version of Corey Hawkins' character from Kong: Skull Island. It was great seeing him play a scientist again.

Although many early Terminators did not have fake skin, the prototypes were just Skynet trying to get the idea of it down first. Also there were T-800 and T-600 Models made for field combat as well.

You guys had some excellent thoughts and speculations at the end about the liquid nitrogen and the glitching that the T-1000 was experiencing. You got it right for the most part! Excellent! Two things - First is background - according to the novelization, the T-1000's most BASIC command is "find main mass and join together". The range that the T-1000 can order it's various blobs around is 14 Kilometers. If the main mass of the T-1000 moves beyond that range, the default directive for the smaller mass is "Hide and Blend in". Thus it would do something like spread out over the surface of a floor, a wall, or a pipe or railing, and mimic the underlying object, becoming a slightly thicker layer - like paint - over the object it is mimicking. This command also kicks in if the T-1000 is badly damaged. So what happened with the glitching? Well - the whole mass of the T-1000 was damaged at a deep level by the freezing and re-thawing. Given enough time it would repair itself internally and reset. But the T-1000's "kill mission" took priority. BUT - since the entire mass was damaged, the command to "Hide and blend in" was constantly kicking in, and the T-1000 was constantly having to override this in order to continue the chase. Secondly and related to the first item - If you watch the film again - take notice of the fact that the T-1000 after the freeze and thaw is moving SIGNIFICANTLY slower than at any other time in the film! This is because he's constantly having to fight that "blend in" command and not just melt flat over the ground (like at the hospital). So he's moving more cautiously and deliberately trying to keep himself together and operational enough to finish the mission.
I never read the adaption; to me (growing up), it was always a case of heat. Because T-1000 is, at room temperature, a memetic poly-alloy, it stands to reason that it would become inherently more memetic under higher ambient temperatures (as shown in the extended cut), and no counter programming was ever written, because this was not an anticipated operational scenario. It was so unanticipated that, having to anticipate and account for any and every other scenario before this one, just based on how likely that scenario is to occur, would cause whole seconds' worth of operational delay
Nice! Thanks for the info. Meshes perfectly with my own reasoning, and adds quite a few great twists as well. I like to think about the background reasoning behind many movie scenes. Unluckily for me my brain does that on automatic, even when watching movies in the theater. If a movie does not engage my brain fully it tends to spew out such little factoids at my consciousness while watching it for the first time. Again, unluckily for me, my other brain centers, especially the one for self-control don't have enough calculation time to keep my mouth from being overridden when a particularly ridiculous concept pops up. Like in one of the Star Wars prequels when Yoda suddenly bounces around Count Dooku with a light saber in his hands. In the theater that caused me to loudly call out (in German): "Oh, Yoda Kampfflummi!" / "Oh Yoda combat bouncy ball!" generating a few laughs, but the scene was totally busted of all its tenseness and only became a cartoon scene after that. Sorry to all my fellow movie goers, but I just couldn't help myself.
I really like everything about the extended edition except the ending. I definitely prefer the shot of the night road and Sarah's narration. But I can't believe they cut the scene of removing and resetting the learning chip from the theatrical version, that scene is exceptionally important.
I dont know if it was some special edition but in my country i first saw edition with scenes like reseting T-800 and everything but on the end there was the street and narating ending - theatrical ending. So i was quite surprised when i learned that there is different one,
Thats the problem with most extended editions. It kinda feels weird in the pacing sometimes. Like sometimes you can just tell when a scene was no longer spoused to be there but it was put back in.
I can tell you why they cut that scene - Dark Fate. DF's T800 makes no sense if that scene remains in. And since I fuckin hate Dark Fate I'm always furious that they cut such a great scene for a continuity I hate.
This legendary sequel is now over 30 years old and it's STILL better than anything today. The CGI in this masterpiece changed special effects forever. Movies and tv shows today owe this film everything.

19:45 This scene was done with Arnie on the far side of the fake mirror and the dummy toward the camera. Linda Hamilton has a twin sister which mirrored her movements perfectly, and also played the role of the T-1000 impersonating her in the ending scene in the steel processing plant. Leave it to James Cameron when it comes to amazing movies.
@@EdwardTemple - Also Gremlins 2. They became popular whenever Hollywood needed twins, so it got to the point that when I saw one of them, I knew that the other one would turn up soon. Of course, it was clearly an unplanned piece of luck that Linda Hamilton also had a twin sister that they could use. But unlike Don and Dan Stanton who both were actors, Leslie Hamilton was not. I'm pretty sure that in the scene where both Sarah Connor and the T-1000 as her are together, that's Leslie as Sarah and Linda as the T-1000, since the latter needed to act the most there.
I remember James Cameron talking about the differences between the two Terminators. Arnold’s Terminator was described as being like a truck whereas the T-1000 was more like a sports car.

Fun fact: You've already seen the actress who plays John's foster mom before. She also played Vasquez in Aliens. Something to note about Robert Patrick's perfromance as the T-1000 is that he barely blinks or breathes. This was an intentional choice on his part to show that even though the T-1000 is more advanced and better at mimicking human behavior than the T-800 it's still a machine.
This movie is a good example of how you can make a villain that looks physically inferior to the hero but is still menacing and scary. (For an example of how to do it wrong, see Quantum of Solace.)
26:11 I like the natural, caring reaction. We've only seen him for a few minutes but, as you later point out, he was a good man. As soon as he learned what his actions would do in the future, he stopped, and went the extra mile to help prevent it from happening. And also, he gave the cops who shot him as much warning as possible, so they could get out of the building before it blew up.
Eh, he was okay. Dyson did a lot to redeem himself, but he's also the guy who accepted "Don't ask" when he knew he shouldn't, simply to play with the cool toys. Sarah's entirely right in her assessment of him; he claims ignorance as a defense, when he knows damned well he should have known. It was his responsibility to know. And he shirked.
@@michaelccozens Yeah, but the worst case scenario in his mind obviously hadn't gotten as far as nuclear annihilation of humanity. And upon learning what the future held his sense of responsibility won out. It was a mini redemption arc. Ultimately he was a scientist with a good heart. And this science was dangled in front of him with conditions, but that part of him had to see it out, until he knew how much damage it would actually do. Denial is easier when you aren't being confronted with hard evidence.
@@michaelccozens Sorry, he might have thought that this was an incredibly advanced military prototype that had landed in their company grounds by whatever twisted backstory. No-one in their right mind would have *believed* it could have possibly come from the future. Thought about it, possibly, but then their rational mind would have said: "Naaah, that's too far fetched, right?!?" and rationalized it away. Even IF he had believed it came from the future he would have probably thought it was some kind of combat android prototype, not one of thousands of killer drones designed to kill off humanity AFTER a nuclear war. Dyson simply did not have the back-knowledge of the whole story Sarah lived through. Come on, just how reasonable is that worst case premise? Also, he was only an employee. Agreed, a high ranking employee, but still only an employee. I would assume that the NDA's on this project would have involved anything up to and including vanishing the whole family if even a single word escaped his lips before release, and probably even afterwards.
I was 11 when T2 came out, and this movie was EVERYWHERE! I had to wait till it came out on video to see it... but even if I'd seen it at the cinema, there was no way avoid knowing the main plot twist of Arnie being the good guy because it was made clear in all the pre-release publicity. Cameron fully intended from the get-go to make the Terminator the good guy - it wasn't a publicity ploy or the result of market testing or anything - but he wanted it to be a secret. The studio, however, was forced into revealing it because at the time of release, several parent groups raised concerns about Arnie playing a violent bad guy again, after he'd starred in a couple of more family-oriented movies and was now seen as a heroic leading man. They were worried that seeing their kids' hero gunning down scores of innocent people would be damaging to children, so the trailers made it explicit, even having a specially filmed shot of Arnie turning to the camera and saying the line "I swear I will not kill anyone." This is why it's so cool seeing people watching it for the first time and being completely oblivious to the twist! It's how James Cameron wanted it, and it's nice to see that it actually works! Another fun little fact is that Arnie was reluctant at first to have the Terminator be a good guy - this was the role that made his career and he didn't want to mess with what worked, but Cameron was able to talk him round. And it was perfect. Now do True Lies, guys!!
Fun facts: No green screen effects were used when the T1000 duplicates someone, instead identical twins were used, which is why it looks so clean for 1991. That includes using Linda Hamilton's twin sister when the T1000 copies Sarah Connor at the climax. When Sarah hits the sicko licker guy in the face with the mop handle, she really hit him in the face full force. Linda Hamilton thought herself to pick locks so she could do it for real during her escape from the hospital. The T1000 actor runs incredibly fast, and kept catching up to John escaping on the motorcycle, and when they are escaping in the security car.
Yep, the scene with Sarah removing his chip in front of the mirror was done in a very clever way, using an Arnie dummy on our side and the real Arnie "in" the mirror as well as Linda's twin sister doubling for her closest to the camera and the real Linda with the real Arnie.
I saw it in theaters too. I was only 9 when I saw it, and of course, seeing it in a packed theater, was amazing! And of course, I cried big time at the end.
There were two sets of twins used in this movie, the security guard and Linda Hamilton and her sister. The actor who played the security guard and his brother were in Good Morning Viet Nam together.
The same is true for the scene where they switch Arnie’s chip to learning mode. There’s two identical rooms separated by a sheet of glass. Arnie and Hamilton are on one side, and a model of Arnie and Hamilton’s twin are on the other, moving in unison to seem like a reflection so the glass looks like a mirror.
The Terminator… one of the best villains and heroes of all time. The first movie you’re shouting for him to just die, and in the second you start to tear up when he does die
The effects really hold up, I love that transition in the steel mill where the T-1000 gets slammed into a wall and instantly makes his back his front. And I love that uncanny valley effect when the foster parents are speaking to the new Terminator, you don't know 100% he's the bad guy yet but the way he blinks is just unnerving, even though he's technically a better model at social interaction than Arnie's Terminator model.
When the T-1000 mimics Sarah at the end of the movie, you briefly see two Sarahs on-screen at the same time. That's Linda Hamilton's real-life twin sister Leslie.

yea there are infiltration units which you see in one of the movies when they get inside the base and Sarahs picture burns then there are mass produced versions which are the grunts you see in flash backs where they are just the metal skeleton
This was very impressive when it was released and on the big screen. CGI was still fairly new, at least of this quality, so it was used sparingly around the practical effects. The theater I saw this in was near a major military base in the US. Some people near me were freaking out about the nuclear blast and were saying it couldn't look like that. A man in front of them turned and said yes, it was very close, and he was an officer trained on nuclear weapons. What happened to Sarah was probably a bit of artistic license, but the city was as close as they could manage, and some of it was practical effects.
Congrats on watching the best action film ever made. Actually, it is one of the best films ever made. There's not much to criticize about this film as it is one of the best examples of cinematic art. There are many details to pick up, and many of them would be hard to spot even for someone that watched this film for 50+ times. Weirdly enough, this film never gets old because it really sets the atmosphere properly. The sound effects and the way they were made is a very cool story, worth a visit. When T-800 was smirking with the minigun, he picked it up from John himself. This shows that he was closely watching John's emotions, reactions, as well as everything that he did. This made him to eventually learn the concept of the emotions. When John hugs his crying mother at Dyson's home, T-800 also got it which is why he imitated it at the end scene. When T-1000 fell into lava, he went through each and every form because of high danger in the situation. Machine obviously tried everything in its power to survive, even if it meant to redo everything that it learnt during its short time of activity. It is very possible that T-1000 works via radio, but it is more probable that the alloy is magnetized to some degree. The entirety of T-1000, or at least a hefty portion, is liquid molecular brain network that works independently from Skynet. It's nanorobotics. Furthermore, I believe it's been established that the mimetic pollyalloy it is made of is actually highly carcinogenic. The form of T-1000 is also interesting aspect. At the start of the film, T-1000 is actually using a living tissue for the purposes of the time travel. It is possible that the tissue gets completely eradicated during the truck explosion back in L.A. Due to the self-learning process, the T-1000 keeps the police's uniform and the original image devised to blend in the film. The actor for T-1000 had to go through a prolonged firearm training, so that he could shoot with both hands without flinching. Also, he had to endure breathing physical training which allows him to run very fast without looking tired. He was made to look especially menacing, cat-like, with a heavy focus on sensing things around, allowing for a quick hunt and disposal of the targeted enemy. The T-1000's separated part in the car escape chase can be used as a tracking device. The reason T-1000 kills Todd is due to interruption, and an apparent giveaway of the situation. This is why he centers him directly into his mouth. In this scene, due to the urgency of the situation, it is also evident just how fast the blades can strike someone, giving us the full understanding of just how deadly T-1000 is, as well as what a great infiltrator he can be as he can imitate both a cop in the hospital, and lady that cooks the dinner. In the T2 trilogy novels, it is revealed that the name of the person whose physical human properties are used for T-800 is called Dieter von Rossbach, an Austrian-born cia agent. The model was used by Skynet for the purpose of infiltration. Dogs were among the best ways to find out who's terminator. This is such a genuine aspect in the films, because even during the futuristic war against the machines, dogs have remained loyal. Human's best friend in the times of need. It is evident that Max was John's favourite, and that he was heavily disliked by the foster parents. There is a bit of cinematic symbolism there for a keen eye, because the dog was held in a cage similarly to how John was kept with his foster parents. The amount of plot holes are rather minimum, which for a film of this caliber that deals with robots, time travel, emotions, interactions, shapeshifting, infiltrations, combat, a sense of urgency, and so forth is rather a great achievement.
It's amazing getting to watch people who have somehow managed to avoid any spoilers about this film, even when it first came out the trailers gave away the big twist despite the fact that the film is clearly structured in such a way that it's meant to be an awesome reveal. Very few people in the world got to experience that moment as it was intended!
The scene with Arnold “smiling” I watch some behind the scenes and it had be shot a couple of times because the crew kept cracking up. It really is an amazing moment and Arnold nailed it
I'm happy for you both that you got to see this movie without having the first act twist spoiled, T2 is a classic but also one of the most universally spoiled movies. Also the phrase "robo-dong" gave me a chuckle.
i remember seeing this when it came out. Everyone was blown away by the special effects. That flowing, shapeshifting metal thing was never seen before and it was stunning. The story was good, the action great, but the effects made it something special.
Technically not correct with the shapeshifting metal effect, but also kinda correct. Cameron first showed the effect in The Abyss, though that was water, not metal, and it was done a lot more and even better in this one.
"The last time they had a justification; this time it's just because it's awesome." You're quick! I didn't notice it on my first viewing, but later I did realize: "Hey, why the sunglasses???"
That feels like a studio request, to capitalize on Arnie's fame. The sunglasses thing is just so lazy. It feels kinda like a "screw-you" to somebody; protesting by working-to-rule, basically. Or I could be reading too much into it. Cameron did make "Piranhas 2"; he might not be above "lazy" (looking at you, "unobtainium").

Well, no, and some would argue that SkyNet would exist anyway, with Terminator 1 and 2 happening in alternate timelines: one where Dyson reverse-engineers the Terminator's CPU, and another where some other creator builds SkyNet from scratch.
I'm old af and can verify to Simone that seeing this in on a big screen was amazing. Pretty much all of Cameron's films should really be seen on the big screen. I think you guys would really like "The Abyss" too, although I'm not sure if the extended cut is necessary on that one. Another great reaction, although I admit that I was slightly disappointed Simone didn't wear the sunglasses in the thumbnail the whole time! Woulda been too hard to watct the movie anyway, I guess.
Which cut has the text ending and which one has the tsunami ending? I'm pretty sure the text ending is the theatrical one and pretty bad, while the tsunami one is the preferred ending.
I have a few habits that I enjoy more than I think I should. I love reading old game manuals that described the characters and items. And watching younger ppl react to stuff from my era.
I saw T2 in the theatres. As others have said, Arnold being the good guy had been spoiled by marketing. As for that change... when The Terminator was made, Arnold had been in the two Conan movies, but he wasn't that big a star yet. Terminator helped drive him to major stardom. By the time T2 started filming, Arnold had gone from being minor to major, and was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. That, in part, is the reason he played the good guy.
One very satisfying thing in this movie is that the psychiatrist actually saw what Sarah was talking about, seeing the T-1000 doing that thing. It was like if Scully in the X-files would really see an alien, but she always walks in after the aliens have left!
Speaking of the X-Files, Robert Patrick (the T-1000) took was in the X-Files during the last two seasons on FOX. In an episode there was a character named Ray Pearce who was exposed to an experimental smart metal that was rapidly turning his body to metal alloy. At one point Robert's character was on the phone with Scully and she suggested something to the effect. His reply: " "What are you saying? Ray Pearce has become some kind of metal man? Because that only happens in the movies, Agent Scully."
Such a great film! Others have undoubtedly been mentioning it, but it's worth watching the non-extended cut - if only for an interesting exercise in studying editing. The extended scenes aren't bad, and some are really cool and interesting, but the the shorter edit still works really well and demonstrates the extended material wasn't necessary to deliver the story. Glad you two got to enjoy these sci-fi action classics!
This is why I watch react channels. I saw this in the 90s when I was like 6 and cried at the end cause my only take away was how cool Arnie is. I honestly miss a lot of the suspense in the set up and pay off type stuff cause I've always known the story beats. It's fun to see it from a new perspective.
The iA theme is only seen in the third movie. SkyNet has taken many forms, for the first it was a super computer that Sara Connor destroyed, for the second it was software and for the third it will take another form more in keeping with the new times, a APP.
This movie, at its time , was a CRAZY, ABSURD SUCCESS. "You could be mine", from the Guns N´Roses was an absolute hit. Arnie was a the top of his career. I´ve watched FIVE TIMES at the theaters. I never did this to any other movie since then. This movie is a masterpiece, period.
I love how people react when they find Arnold is the good guy. Sarah unlocking her restraints is real, Linda did that for real. Sarah didn't kill Miles because of the kid but because she noticed that was turning into a terminator, the thing she hates the most. Miles wanted to give time to leave to the cops befores die, in fact Miles was a good guy.
The work that Robert Patrick did to prepare for this role is awesome. Very few actors these days do even half of what actors used to do to prepare for their roles in movies and tv shows.
He also made the life's work that had to be conspired against, willingly, and knowing that he shouldn't accept "don't ask" but doing so anyway. Sarah was quite right about him.
@@michaelccozens Sarah is angry at him for being responsible for the creation of Skynet, but she is overwhelmed with resentment and pain through what she had to endure and become in the last decade. But ultimately, I think he gains her respect through the way he reacted and teamed up with them to prevent the impending destruction.
I always thought it would make a cool short parody film if the steel that the Terminators were melted in had gone to one of the car companies as sheet metal that went into car bodies, and several models of car had a mysterious ability to self-heal after accidents.
Sarah’s dream is one of the most frightening things ever in movies. The flash and the melting of all these lives with dreams and thought and cities built over centuries in a second ash.... we could do that to ourselves any time
The attention to detail is impressive in 15:37 When Sarah hits the guy in the head with the stick, we can see a brief flash of light. In case someone never took a hard hit to the head, that's the illusion we often get with such a blow, we see a quick white flash.
This movie was one of the first true movies to be made with heavy CGI work, it was so extensive and tough the whole movie was scheduled around rending, capturing and creation of the effects and they had to make sure they had a practical affect backup for scenes they were unsure could be done. On top of that this film is a complete masterpiece in showing off numerous Film creation, editing, practical effects and make-up techniques. Its quite amazing to see how much effort went into what we would consider today pretty basic effects to create with CGIs.
I think the reason Arnold was the good guy this time is because several years had passed, and in that time he had become the biggest star and action movie hero of the era. There’s no way people wanted to see him as a murdering cyborg anymore.
Absolute master piece, seen it hundreds of times, the "thumbs up" at the end still breaks me every time.....!! Great reaction glad you guys enjoyed it!
Arnold’s first movie was Hercules. He was overdubbed with a voice actor. Cheesy movie, I think it’s actually like Hercules in New York. If you haven’t already, gotta check out Predator. Arnold and another minigun!
If noone commented on it yet: The helicopter stunt was with a REAL helicopter. The film crew thought it too dangerous and cameron apparently had to film it himself. It is an insanely dangerous stunt too.
Yeah the cameraman refused to film someone dying, can't say I blame him. I'm surprised the pilot managed to fit the helicopter and his massive balls under the bridge at the same time to be honest.
I wonder, in 2021 and given what happened a few weeks ago with Alec Baldwin on a "mere" Western.......If a stunt like that went wrong what would the consequences be ?? ....

I remember when this movie was premiering, MTV launched a Guns and Roses video clip, "You Could be mine", which was part of the movie soundtrack. AMAZING song, amazing clip, with Schwarzenegger hunting the band in show. That was unforgetable for me!
Just to let you know, the nuke scene in this movie is actually the most accurate depiction of one ever in a movie which makes it all the more terrifying
When I first saw this in the 90s as a seven year old (thanks mum!), the only bits that really disturbed me were the nuke scene and Dyson's death. So kudos to the realism of both.
Well done for watching the cut with the alternative ending!!! A lot of people don’t like it, but I personally like it’s upbeat ending. Fun Fact: the sequel to T2 isn’t T3 but the now closed T2-3D Battle Across Time ride at Universal Studios. The shot gun in the box of roses is a nod to Guns N Roses; who’s track ‘You Could Be Mine’ is in the soundtrack & Arnie is in the music video for!! Robert Patrick reprised his role as the T1000 in Wayne’s World 2!! Yes, they actually flew the helicopter under the bridges. The cameraman refused to film the sequence incase the pilot crashed, so James Cameron personally film it. If you’re watching the rest of the series, I’d skip T3, Genysis & Dark Fate; they don’t manage to capture the greatness of the the first two films. I do however; & this is a somewhat controversial opinion, think that Terminator Salvation is massively underrated & adds some nice touches to the story. There’s little Easter eggs that tie nicely into Terminator & T2. Yes it’s not a perfect film, but we’ll worth a watch. Also, props for the ‘Magrathea’ t-shirt!!
I agree with your choice of Terminator Salvation. It’s not really a success at what it was going for. But unlike all the other sequels after T2 it wasn’t a retread, a retcon or a reboot. It was TRYING to add something original and deserves respect for the attempt.

It’s such a shame that we didn’t see this storyline continue, as I feel it would’ve been great to see John Connor & Kyle Reece’s relationship develop against the backdrop of the ongoing war against the machines & how the Terminators became more & more advanced.
The actress that plays the foster mother is Vasquez from Aliens. This movie also used 2 sets of Twins in two scenes.the security guard scene has one set of Twins. Those twins are seen in Good Morning Vietnam and Gremlins 2. The other set of Twins is Linda Hamilton and her sister when you see the T-1000 as a copy of her.

In the official novelization of T2, the epilogue reveals that elderly Sarah hired a private detective to find out what happens to Kyle Reese in the new timeline she created. She learned that he's married with a family living an ordinary peaceful life. Sarah didn't try to contact him because it would be pointless and because she didn't want to disrupt his life, but she was just glad to know that he's safe and happy.
When the American Film Institute made a list of 100 Greatest Movie Heroes and Villains, Arnold's Terminator made it onto both the heroes and villains lists. Jodie Foster (who was one of the Institute members who voted him onto the heroes list) said that the character is compelling because "He's the monster who wants to be good." I found that kind of touching.
They DID actually fly that helicopter under the bridge. The stunt was so dangerous, the cameraman refused to film it. James Cameron grabbed the camera and filmed it himself.

The actor who played dyson actually had a collapsed lung once and used that experience to realistically portray his death. The shorted breathing was a very realistic death scene.
And then he played a mad scientist type character on the show Eureka lol.
Ok I guess he went into a shock of sort (which can happen) because I had collapsed lung about 2 years ago and a horrible pain in my chest aside I experienced nothing like that.

As somebody who has come out of surgery and woken up with breathing issues, Dyson's breathing there at the end kinda gave me flashbacks ... a little bit scary, actually. Robert Patrick literally gave it all for T 1000. Dude did not only blink but pushed himself to be in a peak physical condition. In the scene where he is chasing John in the bike by running after him, he literally had to slow down because he caught up to him the first few takes.
Not only that but he trained himself to breath shallowly while full sprinting because a robot wouldn't be out of breath or look physically tired from running.

When T2 first released, the previews and marketing completely spoiled the "Arnold is the protector this time" subversion. But when reactors view it, they have not seen the spoiler material and this comes as a surprise discovery as the writers intended. It's one of the most fun parts of watching a T2 reaction.
It's a real shame that most reactors watch the theatrical cut instead of the extended cut. It's a treat whenever one reacts to the extended cut.

Sorry, but I find it hard to believe that they had no idea that Arnie was the good guy. I legit didn't actually see this movie until 2021, but I knew pretty much the entire plot as it's such a huge part of pop culture.
Robert Patrick makes a fantastic villain in this, the fact he never once breathes on screen just gives him an unnatural look thats hard to place and is unsettling

What made the T1000 scary was more Robert Patrick's acting that the CGI. He made it really robotic, emotionless, he never blinks, never smile except once when the situation asks for it. The way he moves, walks, talks, stares, everything was robotic.
You're right. There is a scene where he beats up Arnold, he only used the minimum muscle groups to deliver the hits, so efficient and robotic, pure precise movements. To me, the greatest robot acting ever 👍
In the movie Robert only blinks twice. And one of those times was while running at full speed and firing a gun. So that one should get a pass.
Not to mention training himself to not blink nor flinch while firing his handgun, and running at a dead sprint without appearing winded in the least.

Yeah this alternate ending felt odd. The theatrical ending was perfect the way it is. The voiceover from Sarah caps off the movie perfectly, while mirroring the open ending of the first film. Once we see the shot of Sarah comforting John, it cuts to a shot of a dark road from the POV of the front of a vehicle.

@@Hawk_of_Battle nah, the theatrical was the version released for a reason. They cut out all these cool, but ultimately unnecessary scenes.
I like the future ending as much as the normal ending. Not just because in retrospect it puts a finality to the series that it should have had, based on the junk that followed, but it also ties into Sarah’s voiceovers throughout the film.
Plus I like that we get a positive finality out of it that tells the viewer that they defeated Skynet, which never ultimately came into existence or destroyed the world.

My favorite part of this movie is when Arnold steps out of the elevator. The look of sheer terror and panic on her face is excellent.
Sarah's last memory was killing The Terminator after it was inches from strangulation. Linda played it perfectly.
I still get chills every single time I watch that scene and hear her cries of terror.
I love that entire Pescadero escape sequence. It has such an incredibly tense energy to it. Sarah's escape attempt, John and the Terminator arriving to break her out, the T-1000 giving chase, and how everything converges into a running battle is so fantastic.
I always loved the blue hue that is present in all hospital scenes, it adds to the atmosphere of eeriness and uncertainty.

Sarah Connor is one of the most well written female heroines of all time, and one of the most beloved. Now you guys can see what we older fans grew up with, a woman who knows what needs to be done and gets it done!
Exactly! We don't need flawless Mary Sue's! Sarah Connor is a horribly flawed and broken individual, but it's perfectly fitting given everything she's been through! She's strong, tough, and resourceful, because she has to be, but things don't always work out for her on the first try just because she's a girl boss.
Take Sarah's escape for example. You know for a goddam fact that she's been perfecting that escape for years, improving the plan across every failed escape attempt, which Dr. Silberman mentions.
"I'd probably poke him. And then he'd kill me." That cracked me up. Good job, guys.

The special effects look amazing today. They were mind-blowing when this movie came out 30 years ago.
@Krister L Nowadays, much CGI is simply used as a cost-cutting measure. And to cut production costs even further, movie studios often turn to not very convincing formulaic CGI. The results then look more cartoonish than realistic.
@@rookmaster7502 I feel like cgi is also often used as a way to achieve impossible camera moves... It does tend to distract me a little bit, especially when that camera move is unneccessary and just for show. My brain usually interjects with a "there's no way to have a camera do that move, so this is computer generated, I wonder how MUCH of it is computer generated......" and so on and so forth. Distracted!
@@jkhoover It wasn't Cameron that created the effects though, the CGI was ILM/Industrial Light & Magic that was founded by George Lucas. The practical effects were Stan Winston. Other companes were also involved.
Of course, for CGI they spent far more time creating the effects, and altering code etc, so despite the less capable computer side, much more human effort/attention to detail was involved. From memory there was only a few minutes of actual CGI in the movie though, aside from practical effects, some of it was simpler computer effects such as morphing.
One bit always stuck out though, I think Cameron hated it, when the T1000 was dragged behind the car around a corner, and it was clearly just a dummy.
Not to mention the use of practical effects that just wouldn't be used today, like the helicopter under the overpass.
Robert Patrick trained to control his breath so he could run without visibly breathing, in order to appear less human for this role.
Damn now I know why I get the creepy uncanny valley feeling with him lol

fun facts: yes it's a real stunt. the pilot is actually the person that the T-1000 told to get out of the helicopter a few minutes earlier in the movie. the normal camera crew felt the stunt was too dangerous to film and refused to do it, so james cameron filmed it himself.
That's a HELL of a stunt, but the shot that REALLY does it for me is when the chopper 'pops up' over the overpass at the last moment==that looked so close to disaster, it really made me hold my breath.
That was a great scene. The only other scene I remember that had a helicopter doing stunts between buildings in a city is Blue Thunder.
Needless to say, the only stunts you will see like those now are CGI. No way would directors get away with doing that.

Miles Dyson was played by Joe Morton, and I totally understand your reaction to his death scene here. He's so good, this movie made me a lifelong fan. He's one of those character actors who, when he shows up in something, I audibly go, "Joe Morton?! Oh HELL yes!"

I've been a fan of Joe Morton since I watched him in an old scifi movie called Brother from Another Planet (1984).
5:15 Actually no - terminators are infiltration units, designed and built to be undetected until they find a human hideout. That wouldn't work if they are kept without skin.
Although many early Terminators did not have fake skin, the prototypes were just Skynet trying to get the idea of it down first. Also there were T-800 and T-600 Models made for field combat as well.

You guys had some excellent thoughts and speculations at the end about the liquid nitrogen and the glitching that the T-1000 was experiencing. You got it right for the most part! Excellent!
Two things - First is background - according to the novelization, the T-1000's most BASIC command is "find main mass and join together". The range that the T-1000 can order it's various blobs around is 14 Kilometers. If the main mass of the T-1000 moves beyond that range, the default directive for the smaller mass is "Hide and Blend in". Thus it would do something like spread out over the surface of a floor, a wall, or a pipe or railing, and mimic the underlying object, becoming a slightly thicker layer - like paint - over the object it is mimicking. This command also kicks in if the T-1000 is badly damaged.
So what happened with the glitching? Well - the whole mass of the T-1000 was damaged at a deep level by the freezing and re-thawing. Given enough time it would repair itself internally and reset. But the T-1000's "kill mission" took priority. BUT - since the entire mass was damaged, the command to "Hide and blend in" was constantly kicking in, and the T-1000 was constantly having to override this in order to continue the chase.
Secondly and related to the first item - If you watch the film again - take notice of the fact that the T-1000 after the freeze and thaw is moving SIGNIFICANTLY slower than at any other time in the film! This is because he's constantly having to fight that "blend in" command and not just melt flat over the ground (like at the hospital). So he's moving more cautiously and deliberately trying to keep himself together and operational enough to finish the mission.

I never read the adaption; to me (growing up), it was always a case of heat. Because T-1000 is, at room temperature, a memetic poly-alloy, it stands to reason that it would become inherently more memetic under higher ambient temperatures (as shown in the extended cut), and no counter programming was ever written, because this was not an anticipated operational scenario. It was so unanticipated that, having to anticipate and account for any and every other scenario before this one, just based on how likely that scenario is to occur, would cause whole seconds' worth of operational delay

I like to think about the background reasoning behind many movie scenes. Unluckily for me my brain does that on automatic, even when watching movies in the theater. If a movie does not engage my brain fully it tends to spew out such little factoids at my consciousness while watching it for the first time. Again, unluckily for me, my other brain centers, especially the one for self-control don't have enough calculation time to keep my mouth from being overridden when a particularly ridiculous concept pops up.
Like in one of the Star Wars prequels when Yoda suddenly bounces around Count Dooku with a light saber in his hands.
In the theater that caused me to loudly call out (in German): "Oh, Yoda Kampfflummi!" / "Oh Yoda combat bouncy ball!" generating a few laughs, but the scene was totally busted of all its tenseness and only became a cartoon scene after that. Sorry to all my fellow movie goers, but I just couldn't help myself.
Watched the movie over 100 times and never knew this. I just assumed he was glitching, which wouldn’t be wrong, but thanks for the insight 👏🏼
I really like everything about the extended edition except the ending. I definitely prefer the shot of the night road and Sarah's narration. But I can't believe they cut the scene of removing and resetting the learning chip from the theatrical version, that scene is exceptionally important.
I dont know if it was some special edition but in my country i first saw edition with scenes like reseting T-800 and everything but on the end there was the street and narating ending - theatrical ending. So i was quite surprised when i learned that there is different one,
Thats the problem with most extended editions. It kinda feels weird in the pacing sometimes. Like sometimes you can just tell when a scene was no longer spoused to be there but it was put back in.
I can tell you why they cut that scene - Dark Fate. DF's T800 makes no sense if that scene remains in. And since I fuckin hate Dark Fate I'm always furious that they cut such a great scene for a continuity I hate.
The resetting scene and glitches morphing of the t1000 was in the version I watched on UK TV as a kid but not the old Sarah ending.
The regular version ending is better.
This legendary sequel is now over 30 years old and it's STILL better than anything today. The CGI in this masterpiece changed special effects forever. Movies and tv shows today owe this film everything.
So many amazing films are still better than today's slop. Shawshank, T1,T2, Alien+Aliens, LOTR, back to the future etc etc. Why did things have to turn quite so shite. 🤔

Linda Hamilton has a twin sister which mirrored her movements perfectly, and also played the role of the T-1000 impersonating her in the ending scene in the steel processing plant. Leave it to James Cameron when it comes to amazing movies.
The security guy scene was done with twins also. Imagine the money that saved .

@@EdwardTemple - Also Gremlins 2. They became popular whenever Hollywood needed twins, so it got to the point that when I saw one of them, I knew that the other one would turn up soon.
Of course, it was clearly an unplanned piece of luck that Linda Hamilton also had a twin sister that they could use. But unlike Don and Dan Stanton who both were actors, Leslie Hamilton was not. I'm pretty sure that in the scene where both Sarah Connor and the T-1000 as her are together, that's Leslie as Sarah and Linda as the T-1000, since the latter needed to act the most there.
I remember James Cameron talking about the differences between the two Terminators. Arnold’s Terminator was described as being like a truck whereas the T-1000 was more like a sports car.

Something to note about Robert Patrick's perfromance as the T-1000 is that he barely blinks or breathes. This was an intentional choice on his part to show that even though the T-1000 is more advanced and better at mimicking human behavior than the T-800 it's still a machine.

This movie is a good example of how you can make a villain that looks physically inferior to the hero but is still menacing and scary. (For an example of how to do it wrong, see Quantum of Solace.)

As soon as he learned what his actions would do in the future, he stopped, and went the extra mile to help prevent it from happening. And also, he gave the cops who shot him as much warning as possible, so they could get out of the building before it blew up.
Eh, he was okay. Dyson did a lot to redeem himself, but he's also the guy who accepted "Don't ask" when he knew he shouldn't, simply to play with the cool toys. Sarah's entirely right in her assessment of him; he claims ignorance as a defense, when he knows damned well he should have known. It was his responsibility to know. And he shirked.

And upon learning what the future held his sense of responsibility won out. It was a mini redemption arc. Ultimately he was a scientist with a good heart. And this science was dangled in front of him with conditions, but that part of him had to see it out, until he knew how much damage it would actually do. Denial is easier when you aren't being confronted with hard evidence.
@@michaelccozens Sorry, he might have thought that this was an incredibly advanced military prototype that had landed in their company grounds by whatever twisted backstory. No-one in their right mind would have *believed* it could have possibly come from the future. Thought about it, possibly, but then their rational mind would have said: "Naaah, that's too far fetched, right?!?" and rationalized it away.
Even IF he had believed it came from the future he would have probably thought it was some kind of combat android prototype, not one of thousands of killer drones designed to kill off humanity AFTER a nuclear war. Dyson simply did not have the back-knowledge of the whole story Sarah lived through.

That realization that Arnie didn't kill anyone at the bar at the beginning is my favorite part of this movie.
I saw this when it first came out in 91 and the original in 84. The CGI was groundbreaking in 91. It was amazing and blew the audience's away.
I was 11 when T2 came out, and this movie was EVERYWHERE! I had to wait till it came out on video to see it... but even if I'd seen it at the cinema, there was no way avoid knowing the main plot twist of Arnie being the good guy because it was made clear in all the pre-release publicity. Cameron fully intended from the get-go to make the Terminator the good guy - it wasn't a publicity ploy or the result of market testing or anything - but he wanted it to be a secret. The studio, however, was forced into revealing it because at the time of release, several parent groups raised concerns about Arnie playing a violent bad guy again, after he'd starred in a couple of more family-oriented movies and was now seen as a heroic leading man. They were worried that seeing their kids' hero gunning down scores of innocent people would be damaging to children, so the trailers made it explicit, even having a specially filmed shot of Arnie turning to the camera and saying the line "I swear I will not kill anyone." This is why it's so cool seeing people watching it for the first time and being completely oblivious to the twist! It's how James Cameron wanted it, and it's nice to see that it actually works!
Another fun little fact is that Arnie was reluctant at first to have the Terminator be a good guy - this was the role that made his career and he didn't want to mess with what worked, but Cameron was able to talk him round. And it was perfect. Now do True Lies, guys!!
This is one of the few movies where the youngsters watching it now are better off than we who saw it when it came out.
Fun facts: No green screen effects were used when the T1000 duplicates someone, instead identical twins were used, which is why it looks so clean for 1991. That includes using Linda Hamilton's twin sister when the T1000 copies Sarah Connor at the climax.
When Sarah hits the sicko licker guy in the face with the mop handle, she really hit him in the face full force.
Linda Hamilton thought herself to pick locks so she could do it for real during her escape from the hospital.

I saw it in theaters too. I was only 9 when I saw it, and of course, seeing it in a packed theater, was amazing! And of course, I cried big time at the end.
There were two sets of twins used in this movie, the security guard and Linda Hamilton and her sister. The actor who played the security guard and his brother were in Good Morning Viet Nam together.

The cop / security guard who's stabbed in the eye by the T-1000 was also played by twins.
The same is true for the scene where they switch Arnie’s chip to learning mode. There’s two identical rooms separated by a sheet of glass. Arnie and Hamilton are on one side, and a model of Arnie and Hamilton’s twin are on the other, moving in unison to seem like a reflection so the glass looks like a mirror.
The Terminator… one of the best villains and heroes of all time. The first movie you’re shouting for him to just die, and in the second you start to tear up when he does die
The effects really hold up, I love that transition in the steel mill where the T-1000 gets slammed into a wall and instantly makes his back his front.
And I love that uncanny valley effect when the foster parents are speaking to the new Terminator, you don't know 100% he's the bad guy yet but the way he blinks is just unnerving, even though he's technically a better model at social interaction than Arnie's Terminator model.
When the T-1000 mimics Sarah at the end of the movie, you briefly see two Sarahs on-screen at the same time.

yea there are infiltration units which you see in one of the movies when they get inside the base and Sarahs picture burns then there are mass produced versions which are the grunts you see in flash backs where they are just the metal skeleton
This was very impressive when it was released and on the big screen. CGI was still fairly new, at least of this quality, so it was used sparingly around the practical effects.
The theater I saw this in was near a major military base in the US. Some people near me were freaking out about the nuclear blast and were saying it couldn't look like that. A man in front of them turned and said yes, it was very close, and he was an officer trained on nuclear weapons. What happened to Sarah was probably a bit of artistic license, but the city was as close as they could manage, and some of it was practical effects.
James Cameron was the king of amplifying sequels. The enormity of this movie when it came out can't be understated
Congrats on watching the best action film ever made. Actually, it is one of the best films ever made. There's not much to criticize about this film as it is one of the best examples of cinematic art.
There are many details to pick up, and many of them would be hard to spot even for someone that watched this film for 50+ times.
Weirdly enough, this film never gets old because it really sets the atmosphere properly. The sound effects and the way they were made is a very cool story, worth a visit.
When T-800 was smirking with the minigun, he picked it up from John himself. This shows that he was closely watching John's emotions, reactions, as well as everything that he did. This made him to eventually learn the concept of the emotions. When John hugs his crying mother at Dyson's home, T-800 also got it which is why he imitated it at the end scene.
When T-1000 fell into lava, he went through each and every form because of high danger in the situation. Machine obviously tried everything in its power to survive, even if it meant to redo everything that it learnt during its short time of activity.
It is very possible that T-1000 works via radio, but it is more probable that the alloy is magnetized to some degree. The entirety of T-1000, or at least a hefty portion, is liquid molecular brain network that works independently from Skynet. It's nanorobotics. Furthermore, I believe it's been established that the mimetic pollyalloy it is made of is actually highly carcinogenic.
The form of T-1000 is also interesting aspect. At the start of the film, T-1000 is actually using a living tissue for the purposes of the time travel. It is possible that the tissue gets completely eradicated during the truck explosion back in L.A. Due to the self-learning process, the T-1000 keeps the police's uniform and the original image devised to blend in the film.
The actor for T-1000 had to go through a prolonged firearm training, so that he could shoot with both hands without flinching. Also, he had to endure breathing physical training which allows him to run very fast without looking tired. He was made to look especially menacing, cat-like, with a heavy focus on sensing things around, allowing for a quick hunt and disposal of the targeted enemy.
The T-1000's separated part in the car escape chase can be used as a tracking device.
The reason T-1000 kills Todd is due to interruption, and an apparent giveaway of the situation. This is why he centers him directly into his mouth. In this scene, due to the urgency of the situation, it is also evident just how fast the blades can strike someone, giving us the full understanding of just how deadly T-1000 is, as well as what a great infiltrator he can be as he can imitate both a cop in the hospital, and lady that cooks the dinner.
In the T2 trilogy novels, it is revealed that the name of the person whose physical human properties are used for T-800 is called Dieter von Rossbach, an Austrian-born cia agent. The model was used by Skynet for the purpose of infiltration. Dogs were among the best ways to find out who's terminator.
This is such a genuine aspect in the films, because even during the futuristic war against the machines, dogs have remained loyal. Human's best friend in the times of need. It is evident that Max was John's favourite, and that he was heavily disliked by the foster parents. There is a bit of cinematic symbolism there for a keen eye, because the dog was held in a cage similarly to how John was kept with his foster parents.
The amount of plot holes are rather minimum, which for a film of this caliber that deals with robots, time travel, emotions, interactions, shapeshifting, infiltrations, combat, a sense of urgency, and so forth is rather a great achievement.
It's amazing getting to watch people who have somehow managed to avoid any spoilers about this film, even when it first came out the trailers gave away the big twist despite the fact that the film is clearly structured in such a way that it's meant to be an awesome reveal. Very few people in the world got to experience that moment as it was intended!
The scene with Arnold “smiling” I watch some behind the scenes and it had be shot a couple of times because the crew kept cracking up. It really is an amazing moment and Arnold nailed it

That flowing, shapeshifting metal thing was never seen before and it was stunning.
The story was good, the action great, but the effects made it something special.
Technically not correct with the shapeshifting metal effect, but also kinda correct. Cameron first showed the effect in The Abyss, though that was water, not metal, and it was done a lot more and even better in this one.
I remember going to see this when it came out in theatres. Mind blowing. It's aged amazingly well too.
"The last time they had a justification; this time it's just because it's awesome." You're quick! I didn't notice it on my first viewing, but later I did realize: "Hey, why the sunglasses???"
That feels like a studio request, to capitalize on Arnie's fame. The sunglasses thing is just so lazy. It feels kinda like a "screw-you" to somebody; protesting by working-to-rule, basically.
Or I could be reading too much into it. Cameron did make "Piranhas 2"; he might not be above "lazy" (looking at you, "unobtainium").

"If they succeed in stopping Dyson, does John Connor disappear?" Well, no, and some would argue that SkyNet would exist anyway, with Terminator 1 and 2 happening in alternate timelines: one where Dyson reverse-engineers the Terminator's CPU, and another where some other creator builds SkyNet from scratch.
Arnold being the good Terminator was all over the commercials back in the 90's, so it wasn't a surprise to the viewer.

I'm old af and can verify to Simone that seeing this in on a big screen was amazing. Pretty much all of Cameron's films should really be seen on the big screen. I think you guys would really like "The Abyss" too, although I'm not sure if the extended cut is necessary on that one. Another great reaction, although I admit that I was slightly disappointed Simone didn't wear the sunglasses in the thumbnail the whole time! Woulda been too hard to watct the movie anyway, I guess.

I saw T2 in the theatres. As others have said, Arnold being the good guy had been spoiled by marketing.
As for that change... when The Terminator was made, Arnold had been in the two Conan movies, but he wasn't that big a star yet. Terminator helped drive him to major stardom. By the time T2 started filming, Arnold had gone from being minor to major, and was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. That, in part, is the reason he played the good guy.
One very satisfying thing in this movie is that the psychiatrist actually saw what Sarah was talking about, seeing the T-1000 doing that thing. It was like if Scully in the X-files would really see an alien, but she always walks in after the aliens have left!
Speaking of the X-Files, Robert Patrick (the T-1000) took was in the X-Files during the last two seasons on FOX. In an episode there was a character named Ray Pearce who was exposed to an experimental smart metal that was rapidly turning his body to metal alloy. At one point Robert's character was on the phone with Scully and she suggested something to the effect. His reply: " "What are you saying? Ray Pearce has become some kind of metal man? Because that only happens in the movies, Agent Scully."
You’ve got to react to True Lies next for another great Annie action movie. James Cameron takes the action and comedy to new heights. Great fun.
Such a great film! Others have undoubtedly been mentioning it, but it's worth watching the non-extended cut - if only for an interesting exercise in studying editing. The extended scenes aren't bad, and some are really cool and interesting, but the the shorter edit still works really well and demonstrates the extended material wasn't necessary to deliver the story. Glad you two got to enjoy these sci-fi action classics!
This is why I watch react channels. I saw this in the 90s when I was like 6 and cried at the end cause my only take away was how cool Arnie is.
I honestly miss a lot of the suspense in the set up and pay off type stuff cause I've always known the story beats. It's fun to see it from a new perspective.
The iA theme is only seen in the third movie. SkyNet has taken many forms, for the first it was a super computer that Sara Connor destroyed, for the second it was software and for the third it will take another form more in keeping with the new times, a APP.

This movie, at its time , was a CRAZY, ABSURD SUCCESS. "You could be mine", from the Guns N´Roses was an absolute hit. Arnie was a the top of his career. I´ve watched FIVE TIMES at the theaters. I never did this to any other movie since then. This movie is a masterpiece, period.
wonder how many people caught the nod to the group with Arnie pulling the shotgun out of a box of roses (Guns N Roses)...
I love how people react when they find Arnold is the good guy. Sarah unlocking her restraints is real, Linda did that for real. Sarah didn't kill Miles because of the kid but because she noticed that was turning into a terminator, the thing she hates the most. Miles wanted to give time to leave to the cops befores die, in fact Miles was a good guy.
I first saw this on the day it came out at a drive-in in st charles Illinois. It was a double feature and the first movie was a naked gun sequel.
The work that Robert Patrick did to prepare for this role is awesome. Very few actors these days do even half of what actors used to do to prepare for their roles in movies and tv shows.
Dyson was the real hero of this movie. He fought to the very end, and conspired against his life's work without a moment's hesitation.
He also made the life's work that had to be conspired against, willingly, and knowing that he shouldn't accept "don't ask" but doing so anyway. Sarah was quite right about him.

But ultimately, I think he gains her respect through the way he reacted and teamed up with them to prevent the impending destruction.

Sarah’s dream is one of the most frightening things ever in movies. The flash and the melting of all these lives with dreams and thought and cities built over centuries in a second ash.... we could do that to ourselves any time
The attention to detail is impressive in 15:37
When Sarah hits the guy in the head with the stick, we can see a brief flash of light. In case someone never took a hard hit to the head, that's the illusion we often get with such a blow, we see a quick white flash.
This movie was one of the first true movies to be made with heavy CGI work, it was so extensive and tough the whole movie was scheduled around rending, capturing and creation of the effects and they had to make sure they had a practical affect backup for scenes they were unsure could be done. On top of that this film is a complete masterpiece in showing off numerous Film creation, editing, practical effects and make-up techniques. Its quite amazing to see how much effort went into what we would consider today pretty basic effects to create with CGIs.
I think the reason Arnold was the good guy this time is because several years had passed, and in that time he had become the biggest star and action movie hero of the era. There’s no way people wanted to see him as a murdering cyborg anymore.

Arnold’s first movie was Hercules. He was overdubbed with a voice actor. Cheesy movie, I think it’s actually like Hercules in New York. If you haven’t already, gotta check out Predator. Arnold and another minigun!
He was also billed as Arnold Strong.
If noone commented on it yet: The helicopter stunt was with a REAL helicopter. The film crew thought it too dangerous and cameron apparently had to film it himself. It is an insanely dangerous stunt too.

I wonder, in 2021 and given what happened a few weeks ago with Alec Baldwin on a "mere" Western.......If a stunt like that went wrong what would the consequences be ?? ....

26:50 I've read that Joe Morton actually suffered a punctured lung and a pneumothorax some months before shooting, and so was able to very accurately recreate the gradual asphyxiation.
I remember when this movie was premiering, MTV launched a Guns and Roses video clip, "You Could be mine", which was part of the movie soundtrack. AMAZING song, amazing clip, with Schwarzenegger hunting the band in show. That was unforgetable for me!
Sad that they didn't use the footage in the movie of the Terminator factory. Only appeared in the trailer and in the music video.

Just to let you know, the nuke scene in this movie is actually the most accurate depiction of one ever in a movie which makes it all the more terrifying
When I first saw this in the 90s as a seven year old (thanks mum!), the only bits that really disturbed me were the nuke scene and Dyson's death. So kudos to the realism of both.
Well done for watching the cut with the alternative ending!!! A lot of people don’t like it, but I personally like it’s upbeat ending.
Fun Fact: the sequel to T2 isn’t T3 but the now closed T2-3D Battle Across Time ride at Universal Studios.
The shot gun in the box of roses is a nod to Guns N Roses; who’s track ‘You Could Be Mine’ is in the soundtrack & Arnie is in the music video for!!

Yes, they actually flew the helicopter under the bridges. The cameraman refused to film the sequence incase the pilot crashed, so James Cameron personally film it.
If you’re watching the rest of the series, I’d skip T3, Genysis & Dark Fate; they don’t manage to capture the greatness of the the first two films. I do however; & this is a somewhat controversial opinion, think that Terminator Salvation is massively underrated & adds some nice touches to the story. There’s little Easter eggs that tie nicely into Terminator & T2. Yes it’s not a perfect film, but we’ll worth a watch.
Also, props for the ‘Magrathea’ t-shirt!!
Robert Patric also had a brief cameo as the T1000 at the police station in Last Action Hero.
I agree with your choice of Terminator Salvation. It’s not really a success at what it was going for. But unlike all the other sequels after T2 it wasn’t a retread, a retcon or a reboot. It was TRYING to add something original and deserves respect for the attempt.
@@logandarklighter 100% agree with you. There’s a void in the storyline that hadn’t been seen on film; the world post judgement day & how the machines in many ways were still in their infancy. It’s such a shame that we didn’t see this storyline continue, as I feel it would’ve been great to see John Connor & Kyle Reece’s relationship develop against the backdrop of the ongoing war against the machines & how the Terminators became more & more advanced.
The Cyberdyne building they blew up is just a few miles from my house 😆

The actress that plays the foster mother is Vasquez from Aliens. This movie also used 2 sets of Twins in two scenes.the security guard scene has one set of Twins. Those twins are seen in Good Morning Vietnam and Gremlins 2. The other set of Twins is Linda Hamilton and her sister when you see the T-1000 as a copy of her.
A lot of fans rag on #3 but I'd recommend it if, for no other reason, to continue the Doctor Silverman Saga. He's got a pretty funny scene in #3.
Also the scene where Arnold obtains his clothes.
And the twist at the end.
However, after two badass Terminators, the third doesn't really hold up.
@@Yngvarfo Have you figured out why? I think the Lead Couple were a problem. Junkie Thieving John was a turn-off - it was hard to endure him, much less cheer for him. Claire was OK, fine, yawn yawn but rewatchings leads me to think they are 'the problem'. Also, most showings edit out the entire camper-van meet-up. "Edited for TV time, etc."...

Still, the Dr. Silverman scene makes this worthy. Obviously no stunt double for his 'run away!' scene.
